I want to replace the hard drive of a rev A g5 imac and I see that currently it has a sata 1.5gb/s hard drive. Could I get away with getting a 3.0gb/s or is it incompatible? Specifically this one:[URL]
PS- I'm trying to find an enclosure that is firewire but will allow me to hook up the sata drive i take out. Do they really exist? I'm having the most difficult time.
I just recieved the G4 Cube from Flyinace2000, MR member of vast integrity and great packing skills.
I want to try to put a new hard drive in it before I boot it up to see if that will help things.
Where would I find a photo guide for Cubes and switching the HD?
we changed the hard drive in my friends G3 800 but now when you turn it on nothing comes up on the screen. It will act like it starting up, read the cd a little than sit idle.

The intel iMac was made in late 2006 and the iMac G3 was made in 1999, 1998 or 2000.

the first two things i want to do are upgrade memory and hard drive. problem is i have none of the media the software came on. is there a way to transfer all apps (no data yet) to another HDD?

I have a 17inch imac, and a 1.8 G5 processor (NO built in iSight). The hardrive I'm looking at is a Seagate Barracuda 500GB internal HDD. It looks like the drive installed now is only ATA, so I wanted to double check and see if this makes a difference. If it does, could someone please recomend a suitable 500GB internal Hardrive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an iMac G5 with a broken graphics card. As a result it won't get past the start up screen when booting. I have a new mac on the way, but I'm wondering what would be the easiest/cheapest way to access my files on the old iMac.
I've read about taking the HD out and using a SATA/USB connector to attach it to the new computer as an external HD. Is that my best option, or is there a way to boot the iMac and just access the HD via the iMac's firewire/usb ports.
I've run the CD diagnostic tests and it says everything is fine, except the graphics card.

I could get an external with more than one input (ie, usb and firewire)--does that work? Could i use a usb hub to connect the 2 computers to the HD, and set up different partitions?
And what of NAS? i do not want to set up a whole network (we already have one at my office, and i want this to be independent).

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

It wont let me install this program from my new, second hard drive because the message i get is that it supposed to launch from the primary or running hard drive. Can anyone tell me how i can make my second hard drive my new primary hard drive? For removing the front panel, there is screw hidden under a magnet. Somehow I can not remove that magnet. I have tried using L end keys, screw drivers, nose pliers and even a powerful magnet. My readings indicate if the optical drive is to be set to Master , then the Hard disk needs to be set to slave. Changing the optical to slave seems very difficult, so, How do I set the hDD jumpers to slave instead. I presume they exist? View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having some trouble changing my hard disk's icon... I can't select it in Get Info to paste in a new icon. It happened randomly after I pasted in one icon, subsequently I couldn't select the icon again...
I have tried repairing permissions and my disk (just via Apple's Disk Utility) and that did absolutely nothing.
I haven't tried changing it over Target Disk Mode and for all I know that might work... but I would kind of like to be able to change my icon without turning off my computer.
I remember in OS 9 you had to make sure File Sharing on the disk was off before you were allowed to modify the icon. I'm aware that that's not how it works in OS X but I tried it for good measure anyway to no avail.
I'm running 10.4.6 on a MacBook Pro 2 GHz. The drive whose icon I'm trying to change is my Startup Disk. I have ~10GB/100GB free on it.
I recently installed the whole Boot Camp deal and (obviously) had to repartition my disk. Afterwards my Mac HD was unaccessible until I ran Disk Utility off my install CD to repair it. Although this icon problem cropped up about a week after the install, I suppose it's possible that it could be related. Interestingly enough, I'm having no problems changing my Windows partition's icon.

Snow Leopard? how to do it
Replacing a stuck hard drive (flashing ? screen) I could not get the new one to go all the way in. To check the new one was not the problem I tried to slide in the old one which had come out so easily but with the same result-it meets a springy resistance about 1/8" short of all-the-way-in and will go no further.
I do not know how much force is too much to use. Has anyone had the same experience in handling this problem or any suggestion for my next step since all this is new to me?
Whenever I try to do this, I copy the PNG file, paste it in the get info part of the hard drive icon but i just get this on my desktop.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
