PowerPC :: G5 Freezes - Sent In Once Already?
May 31, 2007
I've been having problems with my Power Mac G5 crashing. The first time it would crash at random, with the fans kicking into high gear the red LED coming on. Apple support had me do an archive an install, no help and then a clean install which didn't help either. I took it into the shop and they replaced the logic board, and tested it.I got the machine back today and after about 2 hours of usage it crashed again, but this time I got a weird screen that scrolled across the screen.I have attached a screenshot and video of the issue:[URL]

Issues with my G5 DP 2GHZ. My rig has been fine since day one, but since I changed my system drive, and added a second drive, the fan radomly goes into a crazy high speed mode, and then locks up, requiring a hard shut down.
Heres the facts:
*my os is 10.4.9
*2.5 gb ram
*used carbon cloner to copy my original system disc to new Seagate 7200.11 1 TB drive
*installed second 1TB storage drive.
*both drives divided into 6 partitions.
*both drives formatted OS extended [Journaled]
*jumpers are in the correct position
*drive firmware is SD15, the correct, and most current
*drives are set to never go to sleep
*fan/freeze is not task specific, meaning it will lock up with no apps open
*this fan/freeze is sporadic, and has happened three times in the last 4 days.
Ive attached the system log.
I know nothing about these logs, so my apologies if Ive included too much, or not enough data.

I have this Power Mac G5 and every now and then it'll freeze up, the fans will go full blast, and the screen will go black. It's not even when I put a heavy load on it.I usually just hold the power button down and do a hard shut down. Does anyone know why this G5 keeps doing this? Should I re-seat the ram and GPU?

I have a G4 iBook - 1.07Ghz, 768Mb RAM, Panther - that keeps giving me the swirling beachball of death depending on the date setting on preferences. If I set the date to 2004 the machine runs fine, but if the date is set to today or (I'm not sure of the exact date) after 2007-ish the thing keeps freezing.
Also, after the freezing troubles I installed Ubuntu and it ran perfect with the correct post 2007 date.

I have an iMac G5 that keeps freezing on me. It occurs more so when I use iTunes. The computer freezes and even the mouse turns off. I have to completely turn off and on the computer to get it working again. Could anyone tell me what it is? Virus?

My computer crashed today and hasn't been able to boot back up since. It gets to the grey screen with the Apple logo and stops. The fan then ramps itself up to overdrive.
I've started it up in target disk mode and repaired it using Diskwarrior on my macbook. It had to repair quite a bit and then it showed up on the desktop of the laptop. I can read, write and pull from it. I then ejected the powermac and started it up again to find the same problem persisting.

My computer, a Powermac G5, Dual 2.0Ghz, 1st Edition Released Oct 2003, will just freeze. It usually happens within 5 minutes of booting into the operating system. I am also unable to boot from the Leopard or Tiger DVD's to try and install a fresh copy of the OS as they freeze during the install. This is what I have tried so far, but to no avail:
Resetting the RAM and Graphics Card
Resetting the Power Management (PMU)
Resetting the PRAM
Now this is the even stranger thing. I installed a copy of PowerPC Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and it works fine. This makes me think that it is unlikely to be a hardware issue.

I've got a G5 iMac which is 5 years old now, it's got 2Gb RAM and 75Gb HD In the past couple of weeks it really slowed down and then it started having panic attacks and random freezes. It also crashed with a what appeared to be a wierd zig-zag pattern [see attached jpeg - this happens even when the log-inscreen is on] I hadn't installed any new applications or anything and it had been fine upto then. I've ran the hardware test a few times, which has said everything is fine: video, memory, logic board all passed. So I backed everything up, scrubbed the HD, installed a fresh system 10.4, which Software Upgrade then took upto 10.4.11; Installed some of the apps and put some data back on - but leaving about half of the HD empty The random crashes are happening more and more frequently, crashing, panic attacks and i am forced to do a hard restart every time Is there anyway out of this or is it a case of old machine, on its last legs and needing a new one?

My PowerBook G4 has been slowly dieing over the last couple of month, ever since I told it was going to get replaced with a MacBook Pro early next year (hopefully around MacWorld). The Airport signal is slowly decreasing and I'm in the same room as the wireless router, the mouse touchpad in parts is loosing sensitivity, there are randomly hard freezes of the system, etc.
But over the last couple of days I have noticed a strange noise coming from the fan (well that's guess), it sounds like its sighing, I know it sound ridiculous but it's the only thing it reminds me off. It comes and goes (the sighing) but it is constant and it's really starting to: 1) Freak me out that my computer could die and day, 2) Annoy me. I have a sound clip (.amr - also converted to .mov) does anyone know how i can upload it onto here or a link, so people can hear what I'm experiencing.

I keep seeing my poor iMac G3 Blueberry freezing for no reason, I have 512MB of ram, but I don't think I can max it, and if I did, the processor and hard drive and gonna die soon, It just freezes, and sometimes the screen will not wake when I move the mouse or touch the keyboard.

My beloved iBook 1.33 wont boot, has flashing? and freezes when I try to boot from original CD with a bunch of vertical lines. I ran the diagnostic DVD and it says Invalid memory access. I removed the external ram chip for computer and still get same error. I also zapped PRAM, reset NMVU (whatever it's called). I already have the iBooks case open and willing to try anything.

I naively tried to install leopard OS on my 5-year old ibook G4 (with very little RAM). It makes a horrible clicking sound from the dvd drive and freezes on the screen that says its looking for OS 10.4(?) (which is not on the computer). When I reboot it immediately starts the install process, because the dvd is still stuck in the drive, and freezes over & over again.
All I want to do is remove the disc and go back to the original OS, so that I can add more RAM and update the OS properly. (The only motive for the update is so that I can have the same version of Garageband 2008 on both my desktop and laptop so I can work with the files interchangably.)
Is there a way to restart the computer that bypasses the install disc and dosen't default into the install porocess?

Having built a hackintosh with my son, I've taken his old G5 1.6 to use as a desktop. Lovely being able to use dual screens, usefully quicker than my Powerbook G4 1.5 and generally quick enough to do the usual - mail, browsing etc.
Problem is, it's started freezing roughly once a day. No mouse or keyboard reaction, going into standby by using the monitor button doesn't help, the only thing to do is turn it off using the front panel button.
I put new RAM in a few months back and replaced the HDD when it died, so that stuff should all be OK. Any suggestions? I've run all the usual maintenance things via Onyx - permissions, logs, daily / weekly / monthly scripts and so on.
My big concern is obviously that I don't want it to just die on me; no way am I replacing the logic board if it goes.

I recently installed a new 250 GB hard drive in my 800MHZ emac. I did a nice clean install of 10.4 on it and all was going well. The problem is that it randomly freezes after about 10 or 20 minutes. Mouse locks up, keyboard doesn't work.I tried pinging it from another computer and there was no response. I hold the power button in to shut it down and when it reboots it works fine for a while and then freezes again. I checked the console and it had this:
Mac OS X Version 10.4 (Build 8A428) 2006-02-10 20:36:25 -0500 2006-02-10 20:36:26.072 loginwindow[84] FSResolveAliasWithMountFlags returned err = -1407
I ran the disk utilty checks and they come up clean. I have tried reinstalling os x with no luck.

My girlfriend has a 17" G4 Powerbook - she recently bought it second hand. It's one of the late models, with a 1.67 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM installed. It runs like a dream, except for one thing - it has a propensity to freeze occasionally. They're not kernel panics - they're hard freezes, where everything locks up completely. Can't move the mouse, can't force quit, nothing - the only thing to do is switch off and on again. I've looked through the logs and can't find any crash reports, so I'm at a loss to what's causing this. The only lead I have is that it only seems to happen when the machine's running on battery - it's never frozen when the power cord's plugged in. I thought it might be overheating, but it froze this morning after only 5 mins of use, so now I'm stumped.

I have a 1.8Ghz dual processor G5, 1GB Ram, 80GB HDD, with OS X 10.4.7 installed and all current updates, and today I was working on it and the fans on it slowly started speeding up, and then everything on the screen disappeared and a mesage appeared stating that a restart was required. After restarting everything seems to be working fine, but I'd like to know if this is a fluke or if I have a serious problem.

recently my ibook keeps randomly locking up, it first started the other day when it got stuck on a blue screen at start-up eventually it came on, but kept locking up, no spinning beech ball just completely froze, i held down the power button to turn it off, i then had to wait at least ten minutes before trying to start up again, if i didn't it would get stuck on the blue screen, then something else weird happened, when i started up it came up with the mac set-up assistant similar to when you first upgrade, so i turned it off again and it went away, so i started up again this time i noticed that spotlight was indexing, despite it already doing that ages ago when i upgraded to leopard, so i thought this had something to do with it, because it kept freezing in the process, but today i turned it on, let it index and to my surprise it didn't lock up, so i went to play world of warcraft, and as soon as the login screen came up it locked up agai

well where do i begin ?? basicly i purchased a ibook g4 14" 1.33ghz that had its harddrive upgraded by a apple service provider. About two weeks after this upgrade took place the harddrive started playing up and the machine would not see the boot volume on the drive when restarted or every now and then the machine would freeze after some time of use, a few hours maybe. i ran apple hardware test and it came back clean after zapping the pram and disk warrioring the drive it fixed this for a day then it started again oh well.
so i sent it back to the service provider who said yep its the hadrdrive goody !!! oh NO he calls back the next day and says the new harddrive is not reconized and that they tried a new ribbon cable WTF when i sent it in the machine saw the harddrive via target disk mode all the time it just didnt see the boot volume.
NOW his saying its the logicboard **** sake !!! so my question could this machines logicboard be fried when it was fine before i sent it in , i mean the ide controller was fine i checked it and now im faced with a brick !!!what do i do ????

my intel mac OS X internal HDD crashed. (disk utility cannot mount hd, hdd grayed out) so i bought disk warrior online.
I'm currently running my OSX from an USB external HD. Install Diskwarrior in the external HD.
DW found my HD, click "rebuild" ...so far so good.
however, after running DW for about 10 mins, my computer goes to sleep. ever since then, I can't wake my computer to view the status of diskwarrior.
I hope DW is doing its thing but my external HD doesn't even blink. (i can hear the MAC is running?)
it's been 1 day now and still no sign of recovery??

I have a 2009 8-core running Lion. It has now starting hanging (desktop visible but no response to any input device). I have run Disk Utility and Apple Hardware Test from install DVD (full test) and it finds no issues. Any thoughts as to how to investigate further. Sounds like a memory leak in an app somewhere, but none are left runnIng.Machine is ok when being used but then is hung when left for a few hours. If I take to Genius Bar I assume they will run AHT and say no faults can be found.

System 10.3.9 working without problem ... until...pointer freezes up.
Re-start helps, but only briefly, until another freeze-up.
Tried using another mouse, connected to my USB port.

So I've had this MacBook for about 4 years now. There has been recently(3 months ago) had problems with it, such as not being able to select things but that has been fixed by apple due to the swelling of the battery. Therefore it was fixed free of charge. I wanted to mention this just in case it could be relevant to the current problem it has. Recently, on my 2nd account (I have 2 on my macbook), everything suddenly froze and I could not move my mouse. I thought it was probably due to the lag of youtube and having more than 3 applications in use. Therefore, I restarted my computer and it automatically logged in on my 1st account(I set that on my log in settings). So everything works FINE on that account and moves smoothly(it also works fine on the log in screen), with no problems. I log into my second one again and the mouse is still stuck (although I can move it within the first 5 second span). I restart multiple times, the 1st account being fine, ONLY having problems with the second one.
Considering I have important files on the 2nd I decide to take a risk and change the log in settings to automatically log in as the 2nd account. I restarted the laptop and it logged into my 2nd account. And it worked. I was happy and tried to go onto my 1st account as well. Then I encountered the same problem. It seems the mouse only freezes (ONLY the mouse because the keyboard and power button works fine whenever I restart it) on the account that's log in settings are not set to automatic. I have important files on BOTH accounts, therefore deleting one is not a solution. This incident happened 2 months ago. I ignored it since it wasn't that big of a deal and my laptop is still working fine. But changing the log in settings every time I need to switch is rather aggravating, don't you think? Is there anyway I can fix this myself or do I have to bring this to Apple?

I was just sitting doing some homework, when my MacBook Pro suddenly froze. I was using the following programs:
Adobe Photoshop
Messenger for Mac 2011 Beta 6
Skype
Safari with like 3-4 tabs opened
iTunes playing a song
So suddenly the song stopped playing, and I couldn't move the cursor or anything. Everything was frozed, so I had to hold down the power button. Why does this happen, and is there anything I can do to prevent it?
