I have a newer iMac 24" bought in 11/2007. I have the mini-dvi to vga converter and when I connect it to a external tv capable of 1024x768, the iMac freezes and does nothing. I disconnect and the screen turns blue and the flickers back on and everything works. I have made the connection then booted up, and I have tried every resolution all the way down to 640x480, same thing it just locks up the screen, but again as soon as I unplug the mini-dvi to vga cable from the iMac it flicks to a blue screen and everything comes back. I have reviewed dmesg nothing, and revieiw /var/log/messages. Is there any troubleshooting I can do. I am old school unix/linux guy just converted my family to Apple and would like to use the display on my tv to watch my iTunes movies.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with Snow Leopard. It is completely up-to-date and has always ran beautifully. I have not installed any new programs lately. Recently, when I go to APPLE > Restart (maybe after an update or just because I like to restart my computer on occasion) the bar at the top disappears, my dock stays up on the screen, and the computer just sits there and freezes up on me. I am forced to hold down the button on the back to get my computer back. Here are the things I have tried:Re-install of the latest update using Combo Update Reset PRAM Repaired Permissions Booted from disk and ran a Repair Disk Complete zero-out of the HD, clean install of Snow Leopard, and reinstallation of everything from a Time Machine backup Nothing has worked...The other problem is that it only happens when my computer is on for several days. If I restart daily, it doesn't happen. So, it makes it hard for me to log-in as a different user for that long to initiate the problem. I think it has something to do with a program that I may open and close throughout the week but I have no way to pinpoint what program it is.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently had a hard drive failure in my imac which i replaced with the the samsung drive listed below and a fresh install of snow leopard. Now i am experiencing a problem when waking my mac from sleep. about 50% of the time when it wakes it will immediately freeze which can only be resolved by a reboot. Could this be caused by this new drive being a "green" drive that conserves more energy when asleep by going into a slower state than a typical drive or is this a software issue?

View 11 Replies View RelatedMy iMac won't shut down completely any more.It gets to a white screen and then freezes, and I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut down.I have also been getting intermittent kernel panics, maybe one every 3 or 4 days.I went through all of the troubleshooting steps to try and figure out the cause, with no luck. Did a new install of Lion and everything seemed OK for a few days, and then started having problems with programs not responding, not being able to shut down, and now getting kernel panics again.Considering completly formatting the drive and starting fresh with everything, but not sure if that would solve the problem either.

I have an iMac G5 that keeps freezing on me. It occurs more so when I use iTunes. The computer freezes and even the mouse turns off. I have to completely turn off and on the computer to get it working again. Could anyone tell me what it is? Virus?
View 3 Replies View RelatedHaving some trouble with my iMac5,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.16 GHz. It's about 2yrs old. Symptoms include: 1 - freezing when I open, close or move windows too quickly, open too many windows and/or when I multi-task in general. Anything processor intensive is unreliable. 2 - apple mouse cursor shoots off to the side of the screen for no apparent reason and scroll button is unreliable. 3 - lines across the screen that resemble pixel drop-outs - they come and go. I'm still running 10.4. I've wiped out my hard drive twice in the last 2 months and started over from scratch. When I re-install 10.4.0, it seems to run fine. until I run the system updates. That's when my trouble begins again. I've also cleared out my caches and histories repeatedly. I've run the Disk Utility repeatedly. This is getting serious. My PC at work is WAY more reliable than my Mac. I'm considering switching back! I owned a G4 for 7 years and was very happy with it. Was the switch to Intel a bad idea?
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo I've had my iMac about a week now. I started a thread about not having any freezes. Well this weekend I experienced two. Both of which occurred while using iTunes (once while importing my old library into iTunes from an external USB drive, and once just having iTunes open). Not much rhyme or reason to the freezes nothing in the crash logs. This is slightly depressing, since the replacements people are getting seem to freeze as well. I still don't think this is Wi-Fi related. I just think there's a serious conflict between the ATI 4850 chip and the rest of the hardware. This is pretty much unacceptable for a new machine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRight now I'm saving for the 20" model (2.66). Would The 20" 2.66 iMac Freeze Like The 4850 Issue? Will it freeze like the upper model with wi-fi on? Making sure before I invest in an iMac.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Imac freezes up a lot, usually after 10 to 15 minutes of being on. I suspect it has something to do with overheating. I have to get my data off of the drive before I take it into the Apple store for fear that they will will just replace the drive and all will be lost. I have a fan blowing on it now in the back and am copying data onto an external drive little by little until it freezes up.
I bought it last fall and have a 3 year warranty on it and this will be my second time bringing it in for repair. The first time it was a problem right out of the box when I brought it home and it was replaced. It's a 3.06 processor, 24 inch screen. I am not impressed by the hardware reliability and the all in one system. I am regretting buying the imac after being a PC user for so long and I am using my Windows PC to write this. I suspect the cooling system could be better on my IMAC given the compressed footprint.
I was working with logic pro 8 on a project when the APP crashed. Then, the whole computer became real slow. I couldn't open anything without getting the spiraling rainbow circle for at least 3+min and even then the app wouldn't launch. So I shut down normally, which took a while.
After I left it off for about a min or so, I tried to boot again just to get stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo. I did some research on my phone (since I currently don't have internet because I'm moving this week) and found out how to reset the pram. I tried it, and this time it got all the way to the blue screen where it got stuck. I tried resetting the pram a second time to finally get to the log in screen but everything was going very very slow. Unusable type of slow. Opening a new finder window took at least 2 mins and everytime I ran my mouse across the idock, it would freeze.
I've got a G5 iMac which is 5 years old now, it's got 2Gb RAM and 75Gb HD In the past couple of weeks it really slowed down and then it started having panic attacks and random freezes. It also crashed with a what appeared to be a wierd zig-zag pattern [see attached jpeg - this happens even when the log-inscreen is on] I hadn't installed any new applications or anything and it had been fine upto then. I've ran the hardware test a few times, which has said everything is fine: video, memory, logic board all passed. So I backed everything up, scrubbed the HD, installed a fresh system 10.4, which Software Upgrade then took upto 10.4.11; Installed some of the apps and put some data back on - but leaving about half of the HD empty The random crashes are happening more and more frequently, crashing, panic attacks and i am forced to do a hard restart every time Is there anyway out of this or is it a case of old machine, on its last legs and needing a new one?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy iMac has recently begun freezing momentarily. First it will freeze for a few seconds (while still allowing the mouse to move). It will resume, and then a minute or so later it will freeze again for a slightly longer duration. During this time, I can move the mouse, click on things, but nothing responds. Music and videos pause and then resume, websites stop loading, not able to type, etc. In fact, it just happened while typing that last sentence.Â

I've had ongoing problems with my iMac freezing, especially during iTunes playback, but otherwise random. No console errors or crash report to go on. I tried a fresh install several times, but the problem was still there. Also tried disk repair etc. I happened to try a defrag tool and it completely screwed my filesystem. As a result I had to do a proper format (zero the disk) before reinstalling. The freezing has now stopped! So if you're getting random freezes for no apparent reason, try zeroing the disk before reinstalling. Perhaps some disks weren't formatted properly before shipping in new Macs? The iMac is a Core 2 Duo 3.06 24-Inch (Early 2008)
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is my first Mac user problem posting going back to my original SE! Power PC based imac running leopard 10.5.8 starts up but then mouse freezes after a few mins. Managed to change sleep mode to 15mins - same problem. Can't boot from Disk as same problem, also command+option and shift all still have mouse unmoved! Obvious change of keyboard and mouse have no effect. Could this be related to offspring's addition of ipad plugged into usb a few weeks back? He tends to unplug the device without ejecting!
View 3 Replies View RelatedHas anyone had a problem with their Intel iMac mouse freezing after it wakes up from being asleep. Check my sig for specs. In particular, we have a wireless mighty mouse and everytime you wake the computer from sleep, the mouse won't work. That includes taking out the batteries and putting them back in. Keyboard still works. Is the bluetooth going bad? Could it be the mouse? We're going to schedule an appointment with the Geniuses here in Memphis so maybe they can figure something out.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently got the 2.4 20" iMac. Since a lot of people recommended Crucial for the memory upgrade. I went ahead and ordered 4GB from Crucial. I had my iMac for about 1 week before I put in the new memory. I never noticed it freezes on me at all before I put in the memory. After I put in the memory, it intermittently freezes and there's nothing I can do except hold down the I/O button to turn it off. It would freeze for no reason, but I noticed it freezes often when I used Handbrake to rip a DVD or even when I'm in Numbers doing just usual stuff. Finally today I put back the 1GB that the iMac came with, and so far, Handbrake is going OK. Could the new Crucial memory be bad? Should I call them up and ask for a replacement or return? Has anyone had this problem?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a early 09 iMac 2.93Ghz with 6GB of ram. About a month ago it kept freezing at the grey startup screen. I took it to Apple and two trips to Apple later my hard drive was replaced. One month later here I am and the problem is happening again, the same exact problem. I turn on the iMac it goes to the grey screen, the beach ball "like" thing starts spinning and then it freezes in the middle of it and I have to do a hard power off(hold down the power button). Any ideas!? I already scheduled a appointment with Apple tomorrow afternoon but its a royal pain in the a** to keep shuffling my iMac between home and the Apple store. This will be my 4th trip in for the same problem, btw.

View 3 Replies View RelatediMac G5 running Tiger, Well in my infinite boredom I tried to make an image sequence out of the movie Braveheart using Quicktime Pro. I don't even know why I guess I just wanted to see what would happen. I set the computer to its task and went to bed, in the morning the computer was non responsive so I restarted manually. The computer powered up fine, but everything was missing from the desktop (and still is). Finder wouldn't open, but some programs will right away after you've restarted, but eventually it freezes up again. I try to relaunch finder, freezes again.
Using the startup disk and disk utility I was able to find that there are supposedly upwards of 65000 images on the desktop from Braveheart. I used the First Aid utility but it made no difference. Im pretty sure the computer is stuck trying to load all the images, but leaving it running for 24+ hours does nothing, it eventually goes into sleep mode like its not doing anything. I am able to login just fine on other users, but I cant access my files as there is no permission or whatever. I'm fine with reinstalling my OS, but I really need to get at some files on my login.
I am a Mac-newbie who recently switched from PC to Mac. I know a little about comps and have some experience with Windows and Linux. Now the Mac. I upgraded my iMac 20" (bought it used from a friend) from Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS X 10.5 and everything seemed to go according to plan until it came to the re-boot and the comp froze on the blue screen with the movable mouse pointer showing. I tried the apple key with s on boot and did fsck -fy and fsck -f a couple of times. It only shows "The volume MacC appears to be okay". Everytime I typed "exit" to go to the log-in window it still gets stuck on the blue screen. I tried to start it with the installation disk in the DVD drive but now it doesn't eject it either anymore. So, the situation is: I have an iMac with that wont go past the blue screen, with a workable mouse pointer and a stuck DVD in the drive. I am extremely frustrated especially since I do not have a second Mac to read the HD in the iMAc with and I don't have a backup system (except my PC Laptop). What can I do?

Sometimes it just freezes, and I can only move my cursor, but nothing reacts anymore. Sometimes the screen blacks (or sometimes blanks) out or shows the weird moving colours as shown on the photo I just took below: After restart, it often happens again and again. View 16 Replies View Relatedtonight I started having trouble with my intel iMac (running OSX 10.4.11). I'm having issues with two things (bolded for those skimming):
Out of seemingly nowhere, my iSight light turned on and now wont turn off. The only program I had open at the time was Firefox. When I try to open up PhotoBooth it says this:
There's nothing listed under USB High-Speed Bus in the system profiler either.
I've tried logging out of my user account, restarting, shutting down, unplugging and holding the back button for 5 seconds ...none of that worked. I tried resetting my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM. That didn't work either, and that's where a second problem appeared: when I try to shut my computer off, it freezes. I have to shut it off by holding the back button.
Is repairing the permissions and/or disk worth a shot? Or should I just take it straight into the Apple store? I hope it's not a hardware issue because I just recently had a new hard-drive installed after it broke down on December 15.
