PowerPC :: G5 Thermal Calibration "CPU Intake Fan Speed Error - Check That Inner Door"

Mar 8, 2010

Has anyone gotten to the bottom of this thermal calibration error with the G5? I see lots of discussion of a possible bug in ASD thermal calibration and claims that it can destroy the eeprom that stores the calibration info on the logic board. So what's the bottom line here? Does this error in reality indicate that the eeprom is no longer writable? Could this simply be an issue of the inner door not sealed properly (perhaps this calibration is critically sensitive to this)?

The fans are racing as intended since the CPU's have been replaced and the calibration stored on the logic board is no longer correct. Everything is fully functional and passes all tests. The inner shield is in place and the sensor (by the rightmost tab) sees it there. The intake fan is running. I also tried another fan with no change. I suspect that some overly high sensitivity to the fan speed is not really the issue here. I have a dual 2.5GHz G5. The liquid cooling system is completely refurbished and the system passes ASD tests. I currently have ASD 2.5.8. I see reports of success using this version so there must be some hardware related issue here.

PowerPC :: G4 Mirror Door Coming Up With Question Mark

Sep 25, 2009

I am having problems with a G4 mirror door that keeps coming up with a question mark. I have tried replacing the battery, and doing multiple pram resets. It will still start up to external drives, if I hold down the option key. I have tried booting from an external and setting the startup disk. This seems to work after it restarts, but if the computer is off for more than two minutes, it won't start up again (even if it stays plugged in). It will just go back to the question mark folder at boot?

PowerPC :: Display Calibration For 15" Machine

Nov 2, 2006

I have recently got myself a lovely powerbook 15" display to use as my portable mac. It is the 1.33 Ghz model. I was wondering if someone could give me any tips on display calibration for this machine. Or if someone had a calibrated profile they were happy with that they could send me. My screen has a not-so-attractive yellow tinge to it. I have tried playing around with the built in calibration software but I don't know alot about it and it hasn't made much difference.

Mac Pro :: Rattling Noise Coming From Lower Intake Fan

Aug 6, 2010

Well, this problem that I thought was coming from the Radeon 4870 fan was really coming from the lower intake fan on my Mac Pro. The rattling noise was coming from this fan itself, and the Radeon 4870 was actually running silent the whole time. This is probably why people with the X1900 and older Mac Pros have been reporting the same issue. This has actually solved the problem for me, my Mac Pro is running silent now: I downloaded SMC Fan Control, then I increased the speed on my intake fan to max, 2800rpm. I let the fan run at max for one minute, I had an idea that this would cause the fan to work out the kinks if it had any. Then I returned the fan speed to normal, and the problem has been gone for the past 15 minutes. You can download SMC Fan Control 2.2.2 (Snow Leopard compatible) here: [URL]

MacBook Pro :: New Retina Has Air Intake On The Bottom Sides, Won't This Allow More Dust To Accumulate Inside

Jun 12, 2012

I have an older MacBook Pro now and it seems to suck air from the top below the screen and out the sides. With the new MBP if I have my computer on a desk etc it will collect from the bottom on both sides. Thus collecting more dust and blowing it out towards the screen. This would cause more dust build up on the compents inside the computer and on the screen.

PowerPC :: Screen Resolution And Color Calibration / Grey Flickering Screen On Internal Monitor

Dec 5, 2007

Thing is I got hold of a 1ghz 17" iMac almost for free, it had a dead logicboard (I checked it with a voltage-meter), but I figured I could fix it and have a small hobby project-thingie going on. Well I just got a new logic board today, for a 1ghz 17" iMac g4.

Things is I only get a bright grey screen from my Mac when I boot. I've tried connecting it to a external display and that works fine. Everything is there.

I then reinstalled Tiger on it, with the computer connected to my external screen. And I still have the same problem. (I have now disconnected the ext. screen and is controlling the iMac from my MBP). So at least it isn't the installation.

So what is the problem? I can via an Apple Keyboard control the brightness on the blank screen, which would indicate that it does react to input of some degree.

I've read that if the inverter is dead or anything else is dead, you would get a rolling grey screen, flicker or something like that and not a steady bright grey. One thing I'm thinking is. What if somehow this logic board was for a 15" 1ghz imac g4? Can I check this?

I read that long thread about guys buying hi-res displays for their MBPs, and they had to replace some display profile? Could I maybe fix it with a different display profile-file?

I'm really confused by all this, and would appreciate any help I can get.

Model: PowerMac6,1
CPU-Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)

and

the gfx chip is a GeforceMX4 with 32mb.

The display is a mode 9c27, manufacturer 610, serialnumber 00000, manufacture date: B84D7200.

PowerPC :: IBook HD Gone? How To Check

Aug 1, 2010

iBook G3 nearly 7yo. Disc drive out of order a long time.

a little history.

I live in Thailand and a couple of years ago passed on my iBook to my girlfriend who absolutely loves it. After a while the video went. I researched and learned about the dreaded bad soldering on the video chip. my GF was happy again! Although it will occasionally not work, a little pressing on the outside case usually brings it back.

Last week something else came along. The dreaded folder with question mark on start up. I am aware this often means the HD.

For the moment I'm going to assume it's a separate problem to the video chip as the ?FOLDER? is actually up on the screen (though I understand simple video like this may be in the firmware or something and may not come through the video per se.

My question is what would be a clever sequence to test the HD?

The disc drive is no good for ages. I have an extra HD in a case with USB. I was thinking of installing OSX on the extHD and trying a startup from that but a friend says the iBook needs Firewire. (Is that true?)
What I also have is a MacBook.

Can I use target mode or something and start up the iBook from the MacBook HD or the MacBook disc drive thus clarifying if the iBook HD is really a goner?

PowerPC :: Acquired A 12" Ibook G4 - What To Check

Sep 30, 2010

So I've been passed an old ibook to see if I want to switch to a Mac.

it's an ibook 12" G4, 1.33Ghz with 512k RAM and a 40GB hard drive and runs Tiger. The HD seems okay, but the battery is shot - lasts for about 30 minutes. I've checked the serial in the battery upgrade programme and that's been done.

It seems to me, it might go another year of useful life if it had additional memory and maybe an upgrade to Leopard.

But before I commit money to the project, do any of you have any advice on what else to check on the machine, and how to go about it? Crucial RAM for this model is a bit expensive for what it is, and Leopard seems tricky to get hold of.

Power Mac G5 :: CD Drive Door Won't Open?

Dec 6, 2007

I'm having a problem getting my CD drive door to open (the CD drive was empty when the problem started). Have tried pushing and holding down keyboard eject key, holding down mouse key while restarting, and typing "eject cd" in open format. When I do these things, the drive repeatedly makes a sort of "grunt" (effort noise) but doesn't pop open, so this appears to be a mechanical problem. I removed the drive faceplate and was finally able to open the drive by pushing the manual eject button and pulling on the tray, though it requires some finagling and doesn't always work. When the tray does open this way, it does not automatically roll all the way out or back in, but has to be pulled/pushed, and once it shuts, it once more can't open without manual intervention. However, I discovered that as long as there's a CD in the tray, it opens and closes fine. While always keeping a CD in the drive is a temporary fix.
