Applications :: Mail 4.2 And Gmail Settings

Jan 4, 2010

before I get started I want to say that I read all of the threads pertaining to this issue and I cannot come to a conclusion as to what I can do to resolve this issue. I bought my wife a 15" Macbook Pro for the holidays and she's a recent convert to Mac OS. As I was tutoring her on the basics, we proceeded on setting up her email account through Gmail with the Mail app. What I also did was delete my own account on my iMac so I can set it up together with her while she watched me do it and sure enough, when it was all said and done, our mail accounts were set up but now I had new folders that I've never seen before. Mail no longer gave me the option to choose POP and set up IMAP by default instead. This led me to finding out that if I held down the Alt/Option key during the account setup, it then gave me the option to use a POP setting. Everyone says that IMAP is a much better solution and I ultimately want to move away from POP but Mail keeps downloading ALL of my emails that dates back at least a month. Sometimes this takes a least 7 to 8 minutes as I have some large attachments from previous recipients and it bogs down my network. Keep in mind that it doesn't matter if I delete all of them, they still re-download when I relaunch the Mail app. How in the hell do I sort all of this out? I've gone into my Gmail settings and checked off the proper protocols for POP settings when I use POP and then proper IMAP settings for that as well. It's just so confusing for me to have all of those Gmail folders on the left hand side. I just want to be able to delete an email forever without Mail acting up. Is this a server issue with Gmail or a problem with Mail itself? I do not want to use Thunderbird because Mail is perfectly integrated enough with the OS for me.

Applications :: Store Gmail Emails On Server With

Mar 6, 2010

I am trying to use Mac for my Gmail account, a paid account holding about 10GB of mail. I have no trouble setting up the account in, but I gather IMAP set ups store all the Inbox locally? Certainly set up of the gmail account in mail consumes over 10G of my precious MBP HD space.

So, is it possible to set up Mac mail with webmail so it that it more or less acts as a UI for the webmail account? I know I could easily use an app like Mailplane (nice but constantly crashes for me) or just a browser, but I am frustrated by the fact that OSX defaults to mail when an email link is clicked (maybe there is a fix for this) and I do like drag and drop file attaching, as well as the integration with iPhone, mobileme etc.

OS X Mavericks :: Enable (All Mail) In IMAP Settings For Gmail?

I keep reading that this is necessary in Mavericks Applemail, but is it? The All Mail folder in gmail has nearly 90K messages and takes an age to load, impeding the rapid update of the current inbox.

How things can function with the show "All Mail" in IMAP turned off from the gmail side? Running both in Maverick and Yosem B2 ....

Applications :: After Password Change Unable To Check Gmail Messages

Jul 1, 2010

Today, I changed the password of my Gmail account on a PC computer in a public library. Afterwards, I was/am unable to log into my Gmail account to check the messages via SL 10.6.4's Mail client. I have an April 2010 13" MBP. Similarly, I was/am unable to log into my Gmail account via the Mail client on my 16 GB, 3G iPad, or the 32 GB, 3rd Gen iPod Touch. I keep getting the error message that either the user name or the password is wrong! I checked and re-checked, but I did NOT see anything wrong? The funny thing is that I could log into my Gmail account via Safari on ALL three devices, but NOT via the Mail client on the three device!

OS X Yosemite :: Mail Couldn't Discover Account Settings For Mail Server

Dec 1, 2014

I've added a Google Apps account to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 few weeks ago to use it in Mail, but I removed it last week. I tried adding it back during the weekend, but I've been getting this error: "Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server domain"

This comes after I click "Set Up" and tick Mail only. I don't have 2 step verification enabled for that account and I didn't change any account settings since adding it last time.

Also, I can still see the account (as well as other Google account that's currently not added to OS X) in Accounts.plist located in: ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData

OS X Mavericks :: Mail App Won't Empty Trash On Gmail Server

Jun 30, 2014

I'm having a new problem with Mail in Mavericks that seems to have just started around a month ago.  When I have emails in the trash in Mail and choose Erase Deleted Items to empty the trash it seems to fully delete them all within the Mail app.  But as I just discovered yesterday by going to the gmail website (for the first time in awhile) they are apparently not being deleted from the server.  The emails are properly being moved into trash within gmail but when emptying trash in Mail they do not empty within gmail.

As I said, this is a recent problem that never happened with Mavericks Mail for me before a month ago.  I just updated to 10.9.4 today and its still happening.

OS X Mavericks :: Delete Emails On Mail App But Remain On Gmail Server

Jun 23, 2014

I have 128 GB HDD and many emails syncing by Gmail IMAP. Thousands of emails are stored on my HDD and most of them I will never use in the future. Despite this I'd like to keep them in gmail server, just for case...

I was trying to reduce size of my for very long time and nothing works correctly.

Ideal situation would be something like this:

E-mails older than 2 months will automatically delete from but not from server. Or it doesn't have to be automatic, but I have to keep them on I'm not sure if it is possible with IMAP.

ICloud :: Moving Mail Boxes From Mail To IMAP Server Error NUL Character In Message

Mar 18, 2012

I am migrating my mail and archive folders from Mail to iCloud.  I moved 20+ folders and over 8k messages with no problem by dragging and dropping the folder from 'On my mac' section to 'iCloud' section in Mail.  The last two folders were the largest with over 1.5k in each folder.  Over 1200 of the messages in each went in to iCloud without a hitch. Then I got this error:

The IMAP command “APPEND” (to [mail box name]) failed with server error: Message contains NUL characters.

There are 149 messages left in one folder and 203 in another folder.  Try as I might, it will not work.  I tried Rebuild mailbox option in menu and exported to Mail and mbox format and then re-importing.  Still does not work.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Outgoing Mail Server Settings?

Jun 15, 2012

I couldn't find a "Mail-specific" forum, so will post here for help. I’m running an older version of Mail (2.1.3) on a PPC G4 MacMini with OS 10.4.11. I have two IMAP accounts feeding into Mail, one my Apple iCloud account, and the other my work Exchange account. All seems to be working fine, but I have a question about the outgoing mail server settings. For iCloud, the outgoing mail server seems to have been automatically set as “” and it uses Server Port 587 with SSL and Password authentication. For my work Exchange account, after lots of trial and error, it uses Server Port 25. Why does one use 587 and the other 25 as a Server Port? Is this OK from a security standpoint? I really have no understanding whatsoever of this stuff.

Applications :: Mail From Gmail / Spam In Sent Mail?

Feb 28, 2010

Don't know if this was addressed yet, but "Spam" mail from my gmail (spam folder - duh!) keeps popping up in my "Sent Mail" folder in Mac mail. I found this post online, but am not tech savvy enough to know what they're talking about.

Okay. I know what's going on there. You are correct this is spam that does not originate from you. The issue is that it is not your gmail address that is being forged, but your other address that forwards to gmail. You have also configured your forwarding server as a valid mail originator for your address in SPF. So the mail looks completely legitimate to gmail: it arrives at gmail from a server that you have configured as a valid server to send from your email address, therefore gmail thinks it really is from your email address.

If you control your own domain and you use gmail's smtp server for outgoing mail, you should remove the SPF entry that marks the forwarding server (URL) as a valid originator for your domain. Then gmail will be able to figure out that this is forged. This will likely cause gmail to put this stuff properly in Spam and to avoid showing you the images.(URL)

Applications :: Import Mail Account Settings From Thunderbird And / Or Outlook Express Into Mail?

Jan 31, 2010

Is there away to import mail account settings from Thunderbird and/or Outlook Express into Mail? [that is, to help any one searching later on as Mail is too common a word to search for]. I've imported all my messages correctly but don't know how or if it's possible to import my account settings. Also: I'm in the process of migrating all my e-mails / mail accounts / settings and mail rules from Outlook Express to Mail []. I have successfully got all my e-mails across. I have also managed to convert all the e-mail addresses in the 50+ mail rules, as stored in the Windows registry, from hex into text.

Some of my rules have tens of e-mail addresses which if I had to add in each address separately would be a nightmare. Is there away of block adding in e-mail addresses to Mail? Also is it possible to manually edit the mail rules preference file(s) and insert the e-mail addresses into that? I'm aware I have to manually recreate the rules themselves but that's not so difficult. It's the adding back in of all the e-mail addresses that might be, given the large number that exist.
