PowerPC :: G4 OS X Locking Up And Display Restart Request

Apr 18, 2010

About a week ago I had my iBook G4 freeze and display a message that said I need to shut down by either holding the power button for a few seconds or by pressing the restart button (white letters on black screen in 4 languages). I did, it rebooted and ran again. I started to get this on a more frequent basis until this morning the machine would reboot, start to run, would lock up again and then repeat the cycle.

It did not seem to correlate to what I was doing - mostly I Net and E Mail - and was not impacted by running on battery or AC. I tried to run Onyx to "clean" up the software but the program would start to run and then the system would freeze. The Restart Request Screen was not accompanied by any other indications of a problem.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Locking Up?

Feb 2, 2007

I have a long-running problem with my iBook (G4 1.33Ghz).

Basically, every so often it locks up and makes repetitive ticking noises as if the HDD is searching for something. Applications freeze and I get the rainbow beachball for up to a few minutes before normal service is resumed.

Once this happens, it keeps happening on and off until I restart the computer.

I don't know what triggers the problem, sometimes the iBook will run fine for days or a week with no trouble, then something will set t off again.

I've tried everything I can think of to fix this short of a full reformat/reinstall.

I'd like to upgrade to a MacBook soon, but for now I have to live with this... Any ideas?

If I can't fix it, I'm hoping 10.5 will do the trick...

PowerPC :: Airport Card Is Locking Up My IBook?

Jun 18, 2009

yes, I think my wireless card is locking my ibook up. I have tried this on 2 browsers, and still gets locked up. I am usually using tabs (only 2 or 3) with the window maximized. I turned it off and looked at the connection. Noticed that the cord connecting the card might be crimped, so unplugged it, re-positioned the cord so it wasn't touching the metal bracket holding the card in place, and still the issue persists.

PowerPC :: Ibook Keeps Randomly Locking Up - System Freezes In The Process?

Nov 30, 2007

recently my ibook keeps randomly locking up, it first started the other day when it got stuck on a blue screen at start-up eventually it came on, but kept locking up, no spinning beech ball just completely froze, i held down the power button to turn it off, i then had to wait at least ten minutes before trying to start up again, if i didn't it would get stuck on the blue screen, then something else weird happened, when i started up it came up with the mac set-up assistant similar to when you first upgrade, so i turned it off again and it went away, so i started up again this time i noticed that spotlight was indexing, despite it already doing that ages ago when i upgraded to leopard, so i thought this had something to do with it, because it kept freezing in the process, but today i turned it on, let it index and to my surprise it didn't lock up, so i went to play world of warcraft, and as soon as the login screen came up it locked up agai

Mac Mini :: After A Restart Display Looks A Lot Less Sharper

Jun 5, 2012

Display in System Preferences says I am in 1080p, but the quality of the screen looks a lot less sharper than before... I can see some pixelation on the fonts and the colors look darker. This has happened to me a lot before. Sometimes it happens randomly after a restart, or after I change resolutions for a game. However, usually after shutting down and powering up again it reverts to how it was before.

I have a powermac g4 M5183 that was recently given to me, It worked for a while but then it started sending me to a screen that says "please restart" regardless of how many times I have restarted it. I was wondering if there was either a way to fix this or since I have no files that I'm concerned about saving if there was a way that I could just purchase the newest OS X program and restart everything.

PowerPC :: Powerbook Internal Display Won't Turn On With External Display

May 22, 2007

For the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.

PowerPC :: Display For G4 12" - Setup Not Compatible For Cinema Display?

Mar 10, 2008

I am looking for a display to use with my Powerbook G4 12". I am in love with the 30" cinema display, but according to technical support today, my setup is not compatible (supposedly, but the person on the phone didn't sound to sure). I have a mini DVI, but the 30" requires a dual DVI. I think the 23" display requires DVI, which I can attain with an adapter. Does anyone have suggestions for what I can use with my computer? The bigger the better for me. Also what do you think of the older (plastic case) apple displays?

MacBook Air :: Forgets Display And Keyboard Settings After Restart

Jun 6, 2009

I have a rev. A MBA and it does two odd things. If I set the display to full brightness, then power down and back up, the display doesn't return to full brightness. I have to go into the display preferences pane and move the slider a fraction of an inch to return to full brightness. The "adjust brightness for ambient light" and "reduce brightness on this power source" are disabled, so that isn't it. Also, the MBA forgets the brightness setting for the keyboard when it is powered off and then on again. As best I can determine the keyboard brightness is set to a random level at power up. I've used MacBook Pros for years, so I don't think it's anything I'm doing.

PowerPC :: G4 Locked Up - Cannot Restart After Shut Down

Jan 26, 2009

My PowerBook G4 15" alu 1.25 ghz locked up out of nowhere the other night (while only running firefox). Couldn't even force quit, so after a long wait I manually shut it down. Then I couldn't get it going again. I pulled the battery, let it sit overnight, and then it started up, only to freeze up again in 30 minutes. Same routine yesterday (though it lasted an hour or so).

I live in Germany and the only Apple store is hours away. And of course my Apple Care is expired. I've zapped the PRAM, reset the PMU, ran first aid on disk utilities (everything came back OK), but I'm freaking out. This thing is seriously important to me, and I can't afford to replace it. I've read plenty of speculation that it could be the logic board, or that it's locking up from overheating, or maybe the hard drive is going bad (though the tests come back OK).

PowerPC :: IBook Locked Up And Not Booting After Restart

Aug 9, 2007

I have an iBook G4 (1.25g memory and 1ghz processor) running Tiger. I have never had any problems with my iBook in the past and now it seems the second my warranty expires I do. I was using it earlier today and the entire thing just locked up for the first time ever and little lines started appearing on the screen. I turned it off and rebooted it and it froze on the Grey screen, I repeated and it keeps doing the same things. It actually loaded a few times and then promptly froze. I tried booting from the CD and it freezes right on the screen to select your language (if it gets that far).

I went into applejack/single user (which runs fine) and repaired disk/repaired permissions/cleaned up system files/ and cleaned up virtual memory. I also used the fsck -y check disk which I'm assuming is the same as typing in 'applejack' and then selecting 1 (But I thought I would use it anyway). The first time I ran fsck it said it changed a system file. I then ran it again and it said that the HD seemed okay. Assuming that fixed the problem I restarted my computer and it froze...again. Or is there a way to reformat from single user?

PowerPC :: Need To Restart G4 After Disk Image Transfer

Feb 6, 2008

I am having problems booting my 700 mhz G4 Flat Panel Mac after connecting to my new Mac via Firewire to transfer a disk image of OS 10.4 I made from the DVD supplied with my new Mac. I was driven to trying this solution to upgrading my old Mac (from 10.2 to 10.4) after:
1) not being able to purchase a retail copy from Apple
2) not having a DVD drive on the old machine anyway, so connecting an external DVD drive and trying to load the OS software from the DVD install disks that came with my new Mac (old Mac saw the drive, tried to open the file but didn't know how)

So I learned about making a disk image of the DVD, which I did, then learned about connecting the 2 machines via firewire and starting up the old machine as a target disk. This all seemed to be working fine. The target disk image showed up on the new machine, I was able to drag the OS disk image to it and it appeared to copy the contents to the old machine. When I unplugged the Firewire and restarted the old machine it starting booting normally then just stopped, with a "You must restart your computer" message popping up on the screen. I have tried to restart the old machine several times with the same results and have unplugged the power then tried it again as well. Being far less than an expert at this I realize there are several ways this could have gone wrong, which is why included all the info. above - just wasn't sure which actions were relevant to helping figure out what to do next to get my old machine to boot, which is my most immediate problem. Dealing with the OS upgrade issue is also a concern.

PowerPC :: IBook Booting - Gray Overlay With With Little Box Saying To Restart System

Apr 6, 2008

I started up my iBook today and it took me all the way through sign-in to my desktop before giving me a grey overlay with a little box saying that I need to restart. So I did and then it took me to my desktop again before scrolling code across the screen in a very messy, un-mac-like way. I tried getting into safe boot (restarting and pressing shift from after the tone until the apple and wheel show up) and it just ran the apple and wheel grey start-up screen for a while before kicking back into a normal restart and giving me the earlier results. So I went and got myself into single-user mode and ran the fsck -yf command. It told me this: Checking Catalog file Invalid extent entry (4, 190) Volume check failed Is there any way to fix this, to save my computer? I don't know anything about code or computers. My general mode of operation has been "I bought a /mac/. I shouldn't ever have to look at code."

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - Blue Screen With Black Box Asking To Restart Computer

Feb 8, 2009

Everytime I turn it on I get a black box asking to shut down or restart the mac. I have managed to get it to turn on to powersave and managed to update the software. Thought it might help but just made it worse - it won't boot up at all now past an apple symbol with a little swirly thingy underneath (I apologise now for my lack of intelligence when it comes to computers/knowledge/names of things!) The first time I managed to boot the computer up it came up with the grey screen and a little folder flashing between a face and a question mark which I assume meant it couldn't find anything but that appears to have gone away now. I bought this computer new from Apple about 2 - 3 years ago and no disks were provided with it.

PowerPC :: G4 Not Booting - Hold Power Button And Restart Computer

Jun 3, 2009

Got a tricky one here: powerbook G4, 1.25ghz, 1GB RAM (2x512), 80gb HD, APX, 15" LCD, serviceable battery, SuperDrive, OS: 10.4.11. It was brought to me with a boot problem: Computer turns on, gives the start up sound, backlight comes on, apple logo shows, spinner spins... then you get the dimmed screen, large option icon and "You must hold the power button and restart your computer": a kernel panic. I've seen this a few times before and the last time, I fixed it with a new hard drive and the removal of RAM from a bad ram slot.

What I did was:
1) Replaced existing 80GB HD with a backup 30GB drive. Then booted with a Tiger CD (the computer won't start with my disk warrior cd, nor with a tiger DVD). I was able to install Tiger and restart the computer. But the airport card doesn't show up. I tried a known good airport extreme card and this too has not shown up.
2) I hooked up the 80GB drive to my PC via MacDisk and checked it. Sure 'nuf it had loads of problems. MacDisk went through and fixed it (I'm not sure what the problems were as I'm new to MacDisk and don't know what it's looking for and fixing when it does).
3) With the computer running the 30GB known good HD, I started having the same kernel panics so I removed the first RAM chip (512MB) and tried to reset the PRAM.... here's where it went wonky. (I know, only change one thing at a time...)
4) As I said I tried to reset the PRAM (Option, Command, P, R, at start up). While I can get the computer to not boot, it won't restart. I don't know if this is just unique to this machine. Next I tried to reset the NVRAM and again got nothing. The screen wouldn't come on at all. After about three or four resets, the computer did start in Open Firmware mode. I reset the NVRAM from there and restarted (reset-nvram, reset-all). Still nothing on restart.
5) After trying to start it 15 times like this, I swapped the bottom RAM card to the top slot and removed the airport card (again, I'm stupidly trying to change two things at a time). BAM, computer boots... I put back in the 80GB drive that's been "fixed" by MacDrive and BAM, that boots fine too.

So then I put back in the airport card and it will boot, but won't recognize the airport card. I've re-seated it about a dozen times and have used terminal cleaner on the card and on the socket for the ribbon cable from the card slot to the logic board. As it sits, I can't get the airport card (either of the two) to show up at all. I did realize that the open firmware did reference a problem, but I forget the code now and when I looked it up, the references were to a failure of the airport card, but there were also more general references, so I can't be sure.

I'm thinking now that it's the airport card controller on the logic board, the bottom RAM slot and a corruption of the hard drive. Yes, there was a history of moisture into the device and I think a drop in it's past too. I'm the Mac repair technician for the people at the local bike shop, so I get to trade my repair work for their bike repair work. The problem is that they ride their laptops like their bikes, hard and greasy. I'm really wondering about ways to get the airport card back up and running. Or, baring that, a good card-based wireless adapter that I can slide in.
