I have a Powerbook G4 with an error message when I boot. "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or Press the restart button". Restarting the computer doesn't work.

I get a message saying "You must restart your computer." (hold down the power key, blah blah).
I've researched a little bit, and apparently its indicative of a kernel panic.
It's not booting from CD either.... what's going on?

It got held up at internet services, we unplugged it from the network restarted. It would boot all the way up so you could see the desktop wallpaper but then the black "you need to restart" screen would pop up.

Whenever i try to create a partition, the kernel crashes and i need to restart my whole computer, boot up from the OSX CD and then "Repair Disk" to get the lost hard drive space back. I had partitioned my HD last week, but then removed it, but now when i try it, it always freezes the computer. is there any way to solve this problem without my data being lost?
View 10 Replies View RelatedEverytime I turn it on I get a black box asking to shut down or restart the mac. I have managed to get it to turn on to powersave and managed to update the software. Thought it might help but just made it worse - it won't boot up at all now past an apple symbol with a little swirly thingy underneath (I apologise now for my lack of intelligence when it comes to computers/knowledge/names of things!) The first time I managed to boot the computer up it came up with the grey screen and a little folder flashing between a face and a question mark which I assume meant it couldn't find anything but that appears to have gone away now. I bought this computer new from Apple about 2 - 3 years ago and no disks were provided with it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using macs all my life but have never run into this problem. My ibook g4 just recently going crazy on me. I had it running then this dialog box came up with the power symbol in it saying i needed to restart my computer so i did as it said.
After it chimed letting me kno it restarted the gray screen came up and i had the ? folder pop up. So i looked around online and the majority said it was my hard drive. My computer also had a bad battery it wouldn't hold a charge and the ibook itself had to be plugged in at all times. My ac charger pin broke (the part that goes into the computer) so i bought a new one a 45w but just recently finding out i need a 65w! But finally my computer does not turn on at all now. Before i go and buy a new hard drive and battery and charger.
Got a tricky one here: powerbook G4, 1.25ghz, 1GB RAM (2x512), 80gb HD, APX, 15" LCD, serviceable battery, SuperDrive, OS: 10.4.11. It was brought to me with a boot problem: Computer turns on, gives the start up sound, backlight comes on, apple logo shows, spinner spins... then you get the dimmed screen, large option icon and "You must hold the power button and restart your computer": a kernel panic. I've seen this a few times before and the last time, I fixed it with a new hard drive and the removal of RAM from a bad ram slot.
What I did was:
1) Replaced existing 80GB HD with a backup 30GB drive. Then booted with a Tiger CD (the computer won't start with my disk warrior cd, nor with a tiger DVD). I was able to install Tiger and restart the computer. But the airport card doesn't show up. I tried a known good airport extreme card and this too has not shown up.
2) I hooked up the 80GB drive to my PC via MacDisk and checked it. Sure 'nuf it had loads of problems. MacDisk went through and fixed it (I'm not sure what the problems were as I'm new to MacDisk and don't know what it's looking for and fixing when it does).
3) With the computer running the 30GB known good HD, I started having the same kernel panics so I removed the first RAM chip (512MB) and tried to reset the PRAM.... here's where it went wonky. (I know, only change one thing at a time...)
4) As I said I tried to reset the PRAM (Option, Command, P, R, at start up). While I can get the computer to not boot, it won't restart. I don't know if this is just unique to this machine. Next I tried to reset the NVRAM and again got nothing. The screen wouldn't come on at all. After about three or four resets, the computer did start in Open Firmware mode. I reset the NVRAM from there and restarted (reset-nvram, reset-all). Still nothing on restart.
5) After trying to start it 15 times like this, I swapped the bottom RAM card to the top slot and removed the airport card (again, I'm stupidly trying to change two things at a time). BAM, computer boots... I put back in the 80GB drive that's been "fixed" by MacDrive and BAM, that boots fine too.
So then I put back in the airport card and it will boot, but won't recognize the airport card. I've re-seated it about a dozen times and have used terminal cleaner on the card and on the socket for the ribbon cable from the card slot to the logic board. As it sits, I can't get the airport card (either of the two) to show up at all. I did realize that the open firmware did reference a problem, but I forget the code now and when I looked it up, the references were to a failure of the airport card, but there were also more general references, so I can't be sure.
I'm thinking now that it's the airport card controller on the logic board, the bottom RAM slot and a corruption of the hard drive. Yes, there was a history of moisture into the device and I think a drop in it's past too. I'm the Mac repair technician for the people at the local bike shop, so I get to trade my repair work for their bike repair work. The problem is that they ride their laptops like their bikes, hard and greasy. I'm really wondering about ways to get the airport card back up and running. Or, baring that, a good card-based wireless adapter that I can slide in.
Whenever I open my mac mini it comes up with the same message "You need to restart your computer hold down the power button or press restart" in four different languages.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI know there are already several threads with questions on how to wipe an ibook hard drive but this one is slightly different. I can't seem to boot my computer from the install disc that came with it. I turn off the computer, hold down c and get a folder with a question mark in it. However when the computer starts I can see the disc folders. I open up disc utility and can wipe the drive but is this really wiping it? I thought I had to boot up from the CD? I ask as I am selling my machine and don't want to think I have wiped something when I have not. I have also been through the same process (from the disc just running in the drive) to install OSX Tiger. But again how do I know if it has cleared all my old settings? Do I have faulty discs if I cannot re-boot from them. All I want to do is a clean and install.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I've got a powerbook G4, thats 8 days past its warranty. Conveniently, it now won't turn on. It won't wont boot from CD. If I turn it on, I get a gray screen that usually just turns my computer back off, if thats not the case I get a screen that shows the finder icon and a question mark and then turns off.
All it will do is boot into open firmware mode. Currently the install disc is inside of it and I've tried booting the cd using "cd:, bxi" and "dir hd", and it can't open both. Does anyone know how to wipe the HD, and start the installer using firmware? Otherwise, I think I'll have to take out the harddrive and plug it into an external case and then wipe it.
I was using garage band when the screen popped up saying that i need to restart my computer. i tried holding down the power button but the screen is frozen. the computer is making a quiet clicking sound. if i close the laptop the light stays on and the sound persists.

I have installed Mac OS X 10.5.6, the installation is going fine and completed successfully when I restart machine, It does going to booting but my PC restart again
Then I try to use -x -v and -v to see what happen,
I can't see anything because it restart before I can read last line
my MBP gray screened with the "You need to restart your computer..." error message. I have absolutely no idea what could have caused this, although Final Cut Studio 2 did finish installing about 10 minutes before it happened for the first time. I tried restarting a few times but the error message kept on appearing about 30-60 seconds after the desktop loads up. I left the laptop alone over night and in the morning, I switched it on and it appeared to have fixed itself but this afternoon, the restart screen came up again.
I have a time machine backup from yesterday, but as I have work due in at the end of this week, I'm a little bit panicky at the moment.
What I'm concerned about, is that if I reinstall Snow Leopard, then restore from a Time Machine back up, it's just going to restore this error.
If anyone could help, it would really be appreciated. (I've attached the error message if anyone doesn't know what I'm on about.)
So ever since about 3-4 months ago, I'll get an error message on my Mac stating that I need to restart my computer. I lose all control and my only option really is to hold the power button down and restart it. I then Googled the issue and found this out. [URL]. No now my question is, do I do a clean install of my OS? Can Can I reinstall and then use time machine to restore my computer? I'm guessing that would give me the same problem as before. Any advice would be great! By the way.. I have a 2010 MacBook Pro i5 so its still really new. This problem happens maybe once every 2 months depending on how hard I'm using it.

A restart gets me back up and running until it happens again, usually within; an hour or so. Always while using Safari.
View 21 Replies View RelatedI have a 2008 MacPro Octo 2.8GHz. Whilst I was in Vista64 (a separate drive, not visualization) I was playing a halflife game called day of defeat. The game froze twice, requiring a crtl-alt-del to release it and stop the application that was not working. When I then rebooted into OSX, the "You need to restart your computer" screen appeared in 4 languages, which I believe is the Kernel panic screen. I've done the hardware test that reports no problems (D key). I've tried re-installing the operating system, (C key), no go just panics. I've tried a safe boot (shift) lots of disk activity followed by a panic. I've even reset the PRAM, no effect.
The queer thing is it will boot into Vista64, but there is some screen corruption whilsts its booting, but once in, it works OK with the exception of playing any 3D games, they will not launch (re-installed drivers). Vista reports that there is no 3D hardware acceleration. Does OSX require 3D just to get past the login screen? I've removed some ram and removed all the other hard drives. I'm beginning to think the 8800GT is playing up, otherwise why would vista still work?, but not 3D games? Is there any software I can use in Vista to check the 8800GT? I also noticed that it seemed to be taking longer and longer to shut down.

After getting to the installation screen, I selected my time machine as my system restore source. However my system restore source is 10.6 snow leopard disc. After restoring everything, I restart the computer and then I get the following message in 5 different languages: "You need to restart your computer. This morning when I boot it up I get a screen saying 'you need to restart you computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again'. Each time I do this though I get the same screen. I think the start up disk for the computer is at my school. is there anyway I can get it working just for today? I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro, which has been upgraded recently to Mavericks. My problem is that randomly (usually due to pressing a button or using the mouse) my computer will black out and restart. I was having these intermittent kernel panics earlier this year and took it to a repair shop that said it was not a hardware issue and clean-installed the OSX, but the problem has persisted. The only difference is that before it would just restart while now I get the gray "Your computer was restarted because of a problem" error screen.

My iMac will not start up when shut down, or awake from sleep.To get it to start i must turn off the power, and turn it back on, then it starts up and runs fine.If i Restart it, it switches off, and will not power back on. The machine still works great but is begining to be a pain in the back-side cycling the power every morning.I have done an SMC Reset, and that did not change it.
I have also added a new user, and when i logged in as the new user, it did restart a couple of times (cannot remember the exact amount) and then when i switched back to my normal account it restarted fine... i assumed it was fixed... but after that it's gone back to it's old painful self..

The machine will not restart. When I attempt a "restart," everything seems to shut down properly. When trying to start back up, the machine hangs at the gray screen. I have left it there for a long time and nothing happens. However, I then force a shut-down by holding the power button for a few seconds. After that, the machine will start up properly. Again, a "cold" start works perfectly fine. Only a "restart" causes a problem and will always hang at the gray screen (no logo - nothing). This is the only way I can restart my machine.

So i updated to 10.5.7 the other day and it took a few restarts to get it going, but all is well now.
i was just tooling around on my computer with several programs open as i usually do (safari looking at gmail, ical, mail, itunes, ichat, weatherdock, TM error logger), then all of a sudden a grey dim starts at the top of the screen and swipes all the way to the bottom then the following message appears: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
Anyone else have this issue with 10.5.7? what did it mean if you had it in the past?
I'm running a mid 2007 MBP 2.4 SR, with stock 2GB RAM, stock 160GB hard drive, 2 Western Digital external hard drives, one USB for Times Machine and a FW800 for iTunes media.
I've had my imac for a few weeks now with only one problem that's recently occured and the problem is this. During the process of uploading attachments to emails or posts or uploading anything to putfile, the screen dims from the top and I get a multilingual message telling me to hold down the power button for several seconds. This first occured while uploading a .zip file.
