Transferring files from my PowerBook G4(1.5ghz/2gb Ram). I was using a flash drive for some stuff but I wanted to put some large video files on my external hard drive. I plugged in the Western Digital HD, 120Gb, but my powerbook would not read it. Is this because I originally used this hd on my pc? Or does the laptop not have enough juice to power the external?

I'm selling my iMac so I bought a new external hard drive today. I formatted it to FAT32 so that I can transfer all my data from my Mac to my PC. So I moved all the stuff onto it and then when I connected the HD to my PC, it wouldn't come up. It comes up on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' thing but not in My Computer.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIt will draw them in, groan like it's about to spin up, pause, then groan some more. I hear it spin up a tiny bit, but not to the rate it usually does. The fact that it's spinning at all makes me think it's a read head/lens dirty problem.

I am trying to copy CDs to my macbook air and I have done this quite a few times before. Suddenly though the attempts fail (on more than on disc). I insert the disc, iTunes reads and displays the tracks on the disc and starts spinning the disc (i.e. I can hear it). The iTunes window shows and initial progress on the first track and then gives me an error message saying it can't read or write to the disc ...

I have a client who wants me to obtain the data burned on a stock G4-dual 500 DVD-RAM drive (circa 1999). It is a double sided type1 5.2 GB.

But (of course) I want to make sure they will read the older discs (after I bust them out of the protective case!).
I currently just got a macbook pro 2011, 15". Two internal drives (120 GB SSD for OS and Programs, 750 GB HDD for Data) & external USB Optical DVD/RW The issue I'm having is when I insert a real DVD into the external optical drive (which is the orignal from the macbook pro not store bought) it doesn't read the DVD. I have installed Quicktime, VLC player and everytime the external just gives me the VIDEO AND AUDIO TS folders. what I need to do so I can play DVD's from my external?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI think my superdrive died in my dual-core PM G5. This is what it's doing: I'll insert a DVD and it'll sit for a few seconds, then eject it. It DOES show up in my system profiler though. Is it dead, or is this a software problem? Oh- I should mention that the last thing I did was use Visual Hub to burn an AVI to a DVD. That worked fine. Afterward- nothing. I'm running OS 10.4.9. Help!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought an external hard drive (like 2 weeks ago)- I put two partitions on it, one set as a Time Machine backup (HFS+) and one as file storage (FAT32 to make compatible with Windows XP boot on my Macbook Pro). When I first got it, I remember being surprised by how quiet it was. I filled it up and now, whenever I plug the drive in, it makes a sound like it's constantly reading (reminds me of the sound old, old computers used to make when thinking a lot, i.e. with the blinking orange light).
As soon as I start 'using' it (for instance, turning Time Machine backup on, etc.) it suddenly starts running quiet again. I made sure to make it 'invisible' to Spotlight so it doesn't index the drive... what else could be accessing the drive and making it work so hard? The constant 'grinding' of the drive is really bothersome!
If I encrypt an external drive using File Vault 2 (Lion 10.7.3) as a Time Machine backup from my current laptop, then later purchase a new laptop and attempt to read that encrypted backup, will there be any problems to consider?
1) I expect that, since the password will be stored on my current laptop, there would be a problem reading the password on a new laptop
2) I was told that opening a File Vault 2 encrypted external drive would require the same laptop, as the encryption creates a match of serial numbers between the laptop and the encrypted drive.

i have a power mac g-5 quad with an external dvd drive and a external hard drive and 2gb of ram. on my ext. hard drive i downloaded mac the ripper and that is where i put all my dvds, now today on my pmac i was using mac the ripper, popcorn, itunes, safari all at once and it froze up on me?why? could the ram be an issue? how may programs can i use at once with my pmac?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two USB harddrives and neither of them are recognized by my G4. One of them consistently requires two ports for power, so I'm not surprised that one isn't working. However, my backup drive (a Verbatim) should not need that and it is supposedly compatible with USB 1.1 ports. It shows up on a Macbook. I am also quite sure that the ports themselves are working.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am (or was) sure that I could - be a recent experience with a new (TN panel) LG LCD monitor 20.6inch 1600 x 1050 native res. (LG L204WT) has sown some doubts. Basically, the external monitor would go blank after a few minutes or secs after scrolling around opening windows etc. Not to powersaving mode but just blank. Only unplugging the DVI cable, rebooting the powerbook and reconnecting the DVI would bring it back to life, only for same thing to happen.

I have two problems really but am hoping if I can fix the first, I can work out the second with existing information on the forum. I have a WD 500gb external drive which I use with my Powerbook G4 through firewire. It works fine but now I can't seem to use any other external drive. I tried connecting another WD 320 gb external drive which I am plugging in through USB, but get nothing. I also tried running my other mac (Ibook G4) in target mode to access information on its hard drive but have the same issue - the Powerbook just won't recognize/mount (i.e. I can't see it in finder or desktop or disk utilities).

I am trying to do a clean install of OSX 10.5 on my old powerbook G4 15". I am using a 10.5 image file on my external. I partitioned the external using GUID, and restored the image file onto the external. (this method works when installing on intel macs). Unfortunately, I cannot boot 10.5 using this method on my powerbook. Is it because i am using a firewire 800 cable? Should I be booting it using a firewire 400? I know that PPC macs cannot boot using usb, so i am stumped.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI got an 1.33 Ghz G4 iBook logic board, given to me as a working part. However, nothing else that goes along. I do have all the basic cabling such as speaker and power button, flex cables and such. Also got myself a new external AC power adapter. Now, I do not intend to use this as a laptop, thus, I will not be looking for a battery, just AC use. However, there's a big problem, I've no screen. I know there's this software hack that allows to connect an external display, in order to have a "mirroring" desktop.
I suppose that'd be achievable if I had the original screen to actually do the hack, but I don't have it. So, is there a way that I can just directly connect an external display and completely forget about the internal one? One more thing, suppose I can't do what I have in mind, if I actually found and borrowed an internal display, would I be alright if after the hack I give the internal display back to it's owner and continue with the external?
I have a 17" G4 powerbook. I would like to get a display for it. Will i have to keep my laptop open if I am using the monitor? Or will I be able to close the laptop and still use the monitor?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been given (!) a G5 iMac which is practically brand new. It's only problem is that it suffers from the sudden shut off issue which seems to plague the G5 thanks to a faulty Power Supply and some caps on the mobo which get taken out by the PS. I've replace the power supply, but can't afford to get the mobo fixed, and since neither Apple nor any of the alternative operating system makers such as Linux will be supporting this system into the future, I figure that the hardware is essentially orphaned. I'd dearly like to use the screen though, as it's in great shape and is a beautiful display. So, my question is, can the internal screen be connected to an external source such as the video card of another computer? It would be great to use it for my music production machine. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. In the meantime I'm going to have a look around inside this beast and see what I can do.

Anywhoo I thought the logic board was fried but after letting the powerbook "rest" I came back months later and sometimes it will boot but as soon as I try to do anything it freezes, so maybe the harddrive is fried? How do you get it to ignore the internal drive so it will boot from an external?
