PowerPC :: Two External Monitors On Powerbook?
May 7, 2008i've plugged my lcd tv to my powerbook using the dvi port and a dvi-to-vga cable and have extended the desktop to the left of my mac's monitor so i can throw windows and stuff there when i'm working (web design). because i would ideally love to have even more room to have my stuff laid out, it would be great if i could connect another monitor and extend the desktop to the right this time... is that do-able? could i use the s-video port for that?

Jul 2, 2010I am trying to do a clean install of OSX 10.5 on my old powerbook G4 15". I am using a 10.5 image file on my external. I partitioned the external using GUID, and restored the image file onto the external. (this method works when installing on intel macs). Unfortunately, I cannot boot 10.5 using this method on my powerbook. Is it because i am using a firewire 800 cable? Should I be booting it using a firewire 400? I know that PPC macs cannot boot using usb, so i am stumped.

Jan 24, 2007I have a powerbook 12' 867 mghz, I know I would rather have a new one, but not ready to give up on this old gal yet! Anywhoo I thought the logic board was fried but after letting the powerbook "rest" I came back months later and sometimes it will boot but as soon as I try to do anything it freezes, so maybe the harddrive is fried? How do you get it to ignore the internal drive so it will boot from an external?

Feb 6, 2007I've got a 15in Titanium Powerbook which I've had for about 4 years and can't see any reason to change it. I'm running OSX 10.3.9, 867Mhz processor, 1MB L3 Cache and 1GB SDRAM. I'd like to get an external monitor, at least 20in, maybe a 23in. I have a few questions though.
1) A fellow mac user said my PB might struggle to power the larger monitor due to the older graphics card. Is this true?
2) If yes... are there any upgrades I can do to allow me to buy an external monitor?
3) If its fine, any recommendations on monitor? I can afford the 23in Apple Cinema, but I don't like spending money for no benefit. How are the other options compared to the Apple? IE Dell/Samsung etc.
4) Anything else I should check/know before purchasing?
5) Any recommended UK sites? If I go Apple I'll go to Regents Street, but what about other options.
PowerPC :: External Hard Drive Setup For Mac Powerbook
Mar 26, 2007A while back I bought an external hard drive for my PC, but then ditched the PC and decided to hook up the hard drive to my Mac. My External Hard Drive is a: 149.1 GB WDC WD 16 00JB-00GVA0 The problem is, I can access all the information but it will not let me do anything on the external harddrive (Like creating a file, copying and pasting a file on there, etc.) However, I can save Torrent downloads on the harddrive, but they do not show up on the actual external hard drive. But, when I press the "Find/Show directory" button in Bittorrent it does find the files. Is there something I need to do, Or is it just incompatible with my Mac?

Jan 28, 2008I have a 12" Powerbook G4 running 10.3.9 Panther. I am having problem booting my computer from a Firewire HD. I have done a search in the forum but cannot get a definite and/or successul solution. Forum moderators and my respected macrumor fellows, please feel free to direct me to a specific link if you find the questions redundant.Recently, I have had the HD making terrible noise and several days ago, the computer cannot boot at all. When I pushed the power button, the screen shows a folder in the middle with a Mac face and switches to a question mark back and forth. However, it just gets stuck at that stage. I suspected that I have a HD problem and wanted to boot from my clone Firewire HD. Unfortunately, the computer will not boot with Firewire HD either.

Mar 7, 2009irst off, according to mac tracker the Powerbook I have is the Powerbook G4 15 inch FW-800. I am running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6
Alright. About one week ago, I hooked up the powerbook to a 19 inch external LCD monitor with a DVI to VGA convertor, and all was well. It found my supported resolution and everything, worked straight away, etc.
Fast forward to today, at about 2pm (4 hours ago) I was using the computer and everything was working fine, but I had left it on for a few days so I shut it off when I was about to take a nap. I wake up from said nap about 20 minutes ago, turn on my Mac and my external display is only showing up at 800x600. I have no idea how this could have happened. This would not be an issue if my monitor's native resolution of 1440x900 were on the massive list of resolutions to chose from, but alas it is not.

May 22, 2007For the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.

Apr 8, 2010I want to put my old 15" PowerBook hard drive into an external case. I pulled the hard drive out of the PowerBook. And I purchased a NexStar CS 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 external case. But the connections don't match. What do I need to do? Do I need to buy some sort of adaptor? USB Keyboard/Hockey Puck mouse (Which I hate luckily any USB Mouse will work)

It was given to me because the built in CRT came on purple every other start up Now it will not come on at all even though I can still hear the loud noise from the Degauss cable and the Power Supply and I feel the tube still throwing off alot of heat like a CRT does. I can get a picture on an external monitor as a mirror but not as a main monitor. So three questions is it safe to use this way with an external monitor and the built in CRT still attached? and how would I go about disconnecting the Built in CRT?, is there any way to fix this? Currently the HDD is blank as thats the way it was given to me but I was also given the restore DVD of OSX 10.4 from another Mac.
PowerPC :: How To Turn Off G5 (No ISight) Built In Display
Jan 28, 2010I have an out-of-warranty 2005 iMac G5 running OS X 10.5 in my bedroom. The screen is very unreliable to the point where it stayed off all the time or gave weird colors and I had to purchase an external monitor (via mini-VGA). I have installed (successfully) spanning tools to allow both extended desktop (2 dual monitors) and mirrored display (2 monitors showing same thing).
However, after hooking up the external display, the iMac's bright display lights up my bedroom. I want to turn OFF my built-in display (i.e. no backlight) and have my external monitor act as my main display --- avoids having two displays eating electricity. Is this possible? (using any Terminal commands?) I don't want the computer to sleep, just to turn off the main display (even manually removing wires will work, if I can find a how-to guide on this!)

I want to use it with iMovie to make a short video of a maintenance procedure, but I can't find any preference setting that will discover the Logitech cam, let alone allow me to choose it.
MacBook Pro :: Built-in External Mic Doesn't Record Audio With Webcam
Jun 30, 2014My built-in external mic doesn't record any audio when recording at all with the webcam. I've seen that this problem happens a lot in iMovie and Photo Booth, but my problem is a little unique, in that it doesn't record audio when recording with any program, not just Photo Booth and iMovie. I've tried QuickTime and even YouTube's webcam capture option, to no avail.
However, the most puzzling aspect of this is that I know for a fact that the built in external mic is functional, because I can make video calls from Skype without any problems.
PowerPC :: New HD And RAM For Powerbook?
Nov 22, 2006I have a Powerbook G4 1.5 w/ 1GB of RAM and the stock 80GB HD. I've run this puppy pretty hard for a couple of years now, and it's lately started to lag a bit - perfectly natural. I was considering buying a new notebook but I've decided to wait until after Leopard comes. So my question is:
1) How do I determine the max RAM I can put in this machine?
2) Are there are specific specs I need to be concerned with when swapping out the Hard Drive? Any type, size limitations, speed limitations, etc.
I'd love a little input as to how I find out this info. I think instead of taking the notebook plunge now, I'm going to put a nice new hard drive in this one and possibly bump up the RAM a little more if it will take it.

Mar 14, 2007So is the is Powerbook G4 802.11g or b? it is the 1.25GHz model. Also, one thing I don't understand regarding the airport extreme or any airport for that matter: isn't the maximum speed going to be completely determined by how much the cable provider, Comcast, pumps out?
If this is the case, how do I determine what my transfers and speeds are looking like specifically for Comcast? And, how would an airport extreme improve upon this or any other performance aspect in this regard?

Jul 18, 2007Powerbook G4 (Ti-book) 667 mhz, 512 mb RAM. I finally after YEARS upgraded my OS (10.4.10), yay me! Just bought Adobe CS3 (for the new IMAC we have yet to buy), but I would like to install it on my Powerbook. SO, it it time to bump up to 1GB RAM. I was told it was tricky, and I should take it in to the apple store to install, but then I took a look under the keyboard, and it looks pretty simple. i have installed new RAM on a G5 tower, and this looks way easier. So, I am planning on buying the RAM either online or at FRY's, then installing it. BUT, I know I have to be careful of what type of RAM to buy. I found what I think will be good at [URL] but I will have to buy 2 (512's) as mine currently has 2 (256). I guess I just want to make sure I am not going about this the wrong way before I drop about $200 for RAM upgrade...

Sep 3, 2008I just bought a used 12" powerbook G4 1.5ghz and I want to add some ram to max it at 1.25Gb. Did anyone try to use ddr400 instead of ddr333 on powerbooks? In theory it will run at 333 like in any pc, but is this flawless in powerbooks? Because ddr333 is expensive nowadays.

Aug 26, 2010Just replaced the logicboard on a 01' Powerbook G4 Titanium Onyx and I'm getting the no video/beeping sound after the chimes upon power up.

I don't THINK it's the RAM though, I thought these cards were good before the computer fried. I've swapped the two 256MB cards with each other, also plugged just one RAM card in both slots one at a time--still no turn on and I get the 3 beeps. Unfortunately I don't have any extra 144-pin 133 Mhz SDRAM chips laying around or i'd just test them. It seems unlikely that both RAM cards would be broken, in addition to the logicboard frying, unless the two events happened simultaneously. Previous install had the 667 Mhz upgraded processor and when I took the logic board out it was fried on the bottom with lots of corrosion/leakage on a good 5% of the surface area. Anyways, I replaced it with a 550 Mhz board. Could the beeping be from installing the different processor or is it more likely that I simultaneously fried both RAM chips plus the motherboard?
