I recently acquired a G4 cube with no os. It came with the original disks, but the only problem is instead of booting from them a flashing question mark on a floppy drive is shown. I have tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM which hasn't worked.
View 9 RepliesI'm relatively new to Macs and I wanted to try a clean install (or erase and install) on my ibook. I recently purchased a MBP and since Leopard is on the horizon, I wanted to do a "trial run" of installing an updated operating system. I know that you can just hit update instead of doing a clean install, but I've been reading that things run better when you do a fresh install. My old ibook still has Panther on it and I figured I could try to install Tiger on it from my MBP disks.
I know that this represents a violation of the license, but I thought it would be worth it to ensure that I don't make any major mistakes when I'm doing the same procedure with my brand new MBP when Leopard gets released. When I tried booting from the disk from my ibook I got a kernel panic which I interpreted as a sign that it was not a good idea so I abandoned the project. Now every time I try to start my ibook I get another kernel panic and I'm afraid I just broke my old computer.
I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo (first generation of MacBook Pro released). I run OSX 10.6.5. My disk utility has detected a problem and says I need the install disks that came with the computer. Called apple and they said I could reboot from snow leopard or the upgrade.** Problem is that I don't have any disks with me except those that came with my brand new iMac. Can I use those to reinstall the system? Is there any other way?
**They also said that after 2007, the install disks that come with computers are keyed to that specific computer so I "might" not be able to use the disk to repair.
Additionally, and I don't know if this makes a difference but I have the airport/time capsule which backs up my computer for easy restore.
I just bought a used cube from a local computer shop. It was abandoned by its owner. I saw the computer running last week when it was in the shop. I went to pick it up today and got it home. I can't get it to power on. The power "button" pulses when I push it but nothing happens. The ACD display that it came with gets power. I have tried reseating ram, reseating the DC to DC board and the graphics card riser.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have two macs(one is macbook, another one is G4 cube). On my G4 Cube OS 9.2 is running and it is up to date. (last firmware update installed) I want to install mac os x tiger on it but i can not. I tried almost everything but i couldn't install yet.
Firstly I downloaded tiger.dmg and burned into a dvd, then inserted to the Cube. It can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file. so i could not install in this way.
Then i connect the macbook to my Cube via firewire and I inserted the installation dvd to the macbook but the result was same. cube can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file.
Then I changed the host and target. I saw G4's harddisk as an external harddisk on my macbook's screen and i found the OSInstall.mpkg after I mounted Tiger dmg file on desktop. I choosed as installation destination G4's harddisk and installed the tiger on it. Then i open the Cube and I opened startup disc on os9 to choose os x as startup system. Though Tiger's system files are on the G4's harddisk there is no choise as os x in the startup disc menu so i couldn't start tiger.
What can i do for install the tiger on my Cube?
Just wanting to know for a friend if the stock 8x AGP card from my G5 Powermac would work in a G4 Cube? I didn't think it would but does anyone know for sure?

I recently bought an iMac and I was wondering why installation disks are not supplied. If a re-install is necessary, how can it be achieved without the original installation disks? or is there a new way of achieving this.

I want to try to put a new hard drive in it before I boot it up to see if that will help things.
Where would I find a photo guide for Cubes and switching the HD?
I know I can get the bulk of it here: [URL:..] But is there a controller board? I can't find any documentation on this thing. I want to use it for a PC. Making an acrylic top is no problem. Just looking for pin-outs, dimensions, and maybe some pictures of someone else dissecting one.

Finally repaired it at the apple store, took it home, ran the updates, but disk utility is saying my drive is corrupted and to repair it with the installation disk. I have been looking everywhere and only found the TechTool deluxe CD but can't find my actual installation disks. how I would go about repairing my disk ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust got a cube and a 17" ADC studio monitor off ebay from different sellers and there is a problem with one of them... when i connect everything and I switch everything on the cube turns on and automatically switches the monitor on but I get no picture. I get the tune that the thing started up but no picture at all
i tried the cube with a very old compaq monitor i had running around that uses vga and still no picture...
I guess it is the cube that is the bad thing... Am I guessing right?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to replace my current failing speakers and I'm thinking of getting the old Apple Pro Speakers (with that fancy connector) or the USB ones that came with the G4 Cube. Griffin had their PowerWave thing a while ago that could amplify the USB speakers because the USB port didn't have enough juice to power the speakers like it did on the Cube. My question is, does anyone know of an alternative USB amplifier that could get the job done? Or a way to convert the Apple Pro Speakers into a usable form? I have the unibody MacBook, is this even an issue anymore, or are the USB ports the same power as the Cube's?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a classic mac pro and I restored Snow Leopard on my 8gb usb stick.
The stick is recognized on osx and works very well and when the installation process reboots, nothing appens, the usb stick is not recognized on startup, even with the alt command.
I tried on other machines and everything is going perfectly except with my mac pro.
Can you plz guys tell me how can I make my mac pro (classic) recognize my usb stick on startup ?
I tried to install Bootcamp (XP Pro SP3) on my Mac Pro (2.66GHz....) and it was not playing nicely.
I have OSX on one HD and I wanted to install XP on a 2nd internal HD. Everything started OK but the installation of XP just gave up on me so I decided to go back into OSX and start again.
No joy. Now when I boot my Mac Pro I got the 'bong' but nothing happens.
I have tried removing the HD that had XP on, still no joy. I tried booting off the OSX DVD, no joy.
My guess is that XP has screwed something on the boot loader (or whatever it uses). Is there anyway of doing a hard reset of that to get OSX back?
It's got 640 RAM, and I'd like to reformat it to maximize use of that. However, I don't have the OS Disks, so I need to do it without them. How can I do such a thing? I'm also doing this because some of my programs aren't working properly.

The Apple Store employee I talked to said I should make an appointment at the Genius Bar and they'll do a wipe and reinstall for me, but I'm not interested in putting much more money into this since I'm giving it to a friend as a favor (hers just died). Any suggestions for how to get a copy of the right OS and all the iLife software, too? It has Tiger, but I could put Leopard on it, if that's easier to get a hold of.

JBOD stands for 'just a bunch of disks.' It's not really RAID. What I'm after is to see these two drives as one 60gb drive. Is that possible? I'm running Mac OS X Tiger.
