View 4 RepliesI just bought a used cube from a local computer shop. It was abandoned by its owner. I saw the computer running last week when it was in the shop. I went to pick it up today and got it home. I can't get it to power on. The power "button" pulses when I push it but nothing happens. The ACD display that it came with gets power. I have tried reseating ram, reseating the DC to DC board and the graphics card riser.
View 24 Replies View RelatedIs there any mod for the cube that would allow it to output component video? Also if i upgrade the video card would it be able to power a 20 inch or so tv?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have two macs(one is macbook, another one is G4 cube). On my G4 Cube OS 9.2 is running and it is up to date. (last firmware update installed) I want to install mac os x tiger on it but i can not. I tried almost everything but i couldn't install yet.
Firstly I downloaded tiger.dmg and burned into a dvd, then inserted to the Cube. It can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file. so i could not install in this way.
Then i connect the macbook to my Cube via firewire and I inserted the installation dvd to the macbook but the result was same. cube can read the DVD but couldn't run the tiger dmg file.
Then I changed the host and target. I saw G4's harddisk as an external harddisk on my macbook's screen and i found the OSInstall.mpkg after I mounted Tiger dmg file on desktop. I choosed as installation destination G4's harddisk and installed the tiger on it. Then i open the Cube and I opened startup disc on os9 to choose os x as startup system. Though Tiger's system files are on the G4's harddisk there is no choise as os x in the startup disc menu so i couldn't start tiger.
What can i do for install the tiger on my Cube?
Just wanting to know for a friend if the stock 8x AGP card from my G5 Powermac would work in a G4 Cube? I didn't think it would but does anyone know for sure?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a G4 cube with no os. It came with the original disks, but the only problem is instead of booting from them a flashing question mark on a floppy drive is shown. I have tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM which hasn't worked.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just recieved the G4 Cube from Flyinace2000, MR member of vast integrity and great packing skills.
I want to try to put a new hard drive in it before I boot it up to see if that will help things.
Where would I find a photo guide for Cubes and switching the HD?
I know I can get the bulk of it here: [URL:..] But is there a controller board? I can't find any documentation on this thing. I want to use it for a PC. Making an acrylic top is no problem. Just looking for pin-outs, dimensions, and maybe some pictures of someone else dissecting one.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy grand dad found some old g4 cube speakers. You know the round ballish ones. They used to connect to a cube with usb. You could just plug it in and they would work. My granddad now has a imac g5. He wants to connect his cube speakers to his IMac.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have a 450MHz Cube with a standard CD-ROM. I would like to add a CD burner, but I'm debating whether to buy an internal burner, perhaps one that originally came with the Cube, or a faster external version.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust got a cube and a 17" ADC studio monitor off ebay from different sellers and there is a problem with one of them... when i connect everything and I switch everything on the cube turns on and automatically switches the monitor on but I get no picture. I get the tune that the thing started up but no picture at all
i tried the cube with a very old compaq monitor i had running around that uses vga and still no picture...
I guess it is the cube that is the bad thing... Am I guessing right?
what can I do to solve the problem (apart from getting another cube)
I bought an iMac G3 at an auction, it is the Indigo version with 400MHz G3 processor, 10GB HD, hope that's enough to work out which one. It will simply not boot up at all, when I first got it I switched it on and it done the Apple chime sound, then nothing, no power light at all. Now if I press the power button, no power light, no screen, nothing, although the screen sounds like it is coming on (the static sound and the degauss coil), no more chime or anything, as well as the CD drive sounds liek its searching for a disc, and the hard drive clicks a couple of times. I do not have an Apple keyboard or mouse, and am using a standard wireless USB keyboard and an optical wheel USB mouse. I don't know if it just needs OS9 on it (it says that on the sticker on the bottom) and if that is the only problem. I pressed the PMU reset button in the RAM flap while it was not connected to any power, and this hasn't done anything.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to replace my current failing speakers and I'm thinking of getting the old Apple Pro Speakers (with that fancy connector) or the USB ones that came with the G4 Cube. Griffin had their PowerWave thing a while ago that could amplify the USB speakers because the USB port didn't have enough juice to power the speakers like it did on the Cube. My question is, does anyone know of an alternative USB amplifier that could get the job done? Or a way to convert the Apple Pro Speakers into a usable form? I have the unibody MacBook, is this even an issue anymore, or are the USB ports the same power as the Cube's?
View 5 Replies View RelatedUntil yesterday, my iMac G3 slot is working fine, but today, I can't power it up. When I press the power button, the light just flash and then went off. I've opened it up to check the PRAM batt and also checked if there are any shorts on the logic board. All looked ok to me. The HDD is working fine and I supposed the power supply unit is fine too.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using my ibook just now, when suddenly, the screen went black, as if it were sleeping. I don't know if it was sleeping, but it would not wake up. I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on. But when it comes on, I just hear the fan. The apple logo does not light up. I'm not sure what's wrong.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've inherited an iBook G4 12". Model A1133. It came with a partially charged battery and a known power issue. Initially with the battery partially charged (on another iBook), the machine turned on ok. The battery was not charging, according to the About this Mac and the Coconut Battery application, although the light on the AC adaptor was amber. As the battery became flat, the iBook was no longer able to be turned on. I have reset PMU, PRAM, Opened the Firmware and reset the NVRAM, reseated the battery and tried a host of things suggested on this forum and others to no avail. I have also replaced the DC-in board (no difference, so put the old one back in) and tried a different power adaptor. The battery is as flat as a tack (now occasionally flashing one light when button is pressed) and now there is no chime, fan noise except for an occasional sound which sounds like the hard drive starting then stopping (very faint sound though) when I try to power up the iBook. I was hoping to get an external battery charger to charge the battery as I don't have a spare charged one nor access to a similar working iBook. I live in Australia and have been unable to find one online here. The other thing I have heard on two forums, is that this iBook doesn't have a PRAM battery and therefore cannot start without a powered battery in place. If this is the case, then the issue may be that of just the power not being delivered to the PMU?
View 5 Replies View Relatedso i go to turn my imac on tonight and it makes the normal noise when it always turns on but the screen stays blank(light blue)....after about 2 minutes this little picture of a folder with a question mark shows up in the middle of the screen. it keeps making this clicking noise as well. ive tried unplugging everything and restarting it here is a pic of what the thing that pop ups looks like [URL]
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhat is the maximum OS I can install in a G4 Cube? I am trying to update my old Cube.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
While poking around on youtube I found Steve Jobs presenting the Cube in 2000. Seems like it was the mid level headless Mac people call for on the Internet. I wonder is there any interest macrumors? I like the Cube design and the way you were able to access the guts was very cool. Some have written that the Mini IS the natural progression of the Cube but I think the Mini is too locked down. It would be nice to make drive swapping a little more user friendly and maybe have a PCI slot (or two) available. Maybe even the ability to upgrade CPU/GPU. Think of it as a Mac for people who can't leave well enough alone but can't afford a Pro.
View 7 Replies View RelatedFinally got around to reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 x64 natively on my MBP, since I accidentally deleted the partition that was already on there. Anyway, got it all perfectly working, then I played around with the 3D cube. I was freaking blown away how neat it was! Does anyone know of something like it for Mac OS X? I searched, but couldn't find anything.

i need to know whether its a hard drive issue for not. My mac started to switch itself off completely with no warning. Recently it will literally come on for a few minutes and go off again. I then have to wait some time (and i usually n plug it and re plug it in) before it works again. I wonder whether something has been dislodged perhaps. Im poised to go and buy a new hard drive but if you think its something more serious then i wont bother.
View 2 Replies View RelatedNormally when I shut power off my MacBook Pro, it takes about 4-5 seconds and then its off. Since I installed VMware Fusion yesterday, it takes about 1 minute to power off. What is going on? I read somewhere that when you quit a virtual machine you need to choose "kill all" to stop any background processes. How do I do this or is this just normal.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm hoping for some kind of insight on a phantom random shut off issue I'm having. I have a 2007 2.2ghz MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and upgraded to 4GB ram. Within the last month, it has started to randomly power off. At first it only happened when I closed the lid and it went into sleep, but when I would arrive at school it would have shutdown on the trip. In the middle of this, I also replaced the battery. The day I put the new battery in, the thing freaked out. It powered off randomly while I was working. I was in the middle of the first battery calibration so I thought it might be a battery issue. When I tried to power back on, it would start to load the desktop and then power off again. I couldn't get it through a full boot cycle. I tried various configs of old battery, new battery, with power, without power cord and nothing seemed to work. Reset the SMC and PRAM as well to no avail. The longer I let it sit the longer I could work prior to power failure. So I assumed it was FUBAR and walked away.
Next morning called apple care and of course, things seemed fine. However, 1.5hours in, shuts off. Crap, Apple Care said go to Genius bar get it checked. Three days at Genius bar, full hardware and stress test and everything passed flying colors. I thought maybe it was a naughty little gnome who had decided to move on and torment some other guy. 3 days go by no problem, then today during sleep it powered off again. Then tonight, twice while working with powercord attached (one time losing about an hours worth of Excel work, which was a nice bonus).
Since everything checked out fine, I'm struggling with what to tell Apple if I take it back for repair. I need the laptop, but trying to work expecting impending doom when it randomly decides to shutdown sucks. I have apple care, but if they can't find any issues then it doesn't do me any good.
Any suggestions? Is it worth trying to do a clean install or look at some kind of software issue? Has anyone else dealt with this kind of issue?
I just got a MacBook Pro and an LED cinema display 24'' and I find myself using it 90% with the cinema display in clamshell mode. I am worried because the power adapter of the cinema display is charging the battery 24/7 when it is charged and i am afraid it might damage it. I can't use the LED cinema display without powering the macbook pro.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just bought this new 15" MacBook Pro (early 2009). Yesterday I plug in the power adapter and open the lid. Nothing. I hold down the power button for a few seconds. Nothing. After going on line I found a link to reset the SMC. So I followed the instructions and that worked - yesterday. This morning same scenario sans I can not get it to power up.
