we changed the hard drive in my friends G3 800 but now when you turn it on nothing comes up on the screen. It will act like it starting up, read the cd a little than sit idle.

my aunt recently bought a Macbook because her 9 year old iMac g4's hard drive finally wore out. She is now giving it to me, which i plan to fix. The only problem is that she threw out the restore discs thinking she was just going to recycle the computer. I searched ebay and couldn't find any restore discs for iMac g4 for sale. There are powermac g4 discs, but I doubt that will work the same. So here is my problem. Do I wait for a set of restore discs to surface on ebay, or are there other means of restoring it.

I have no idea if the lcd is anygood still, but i was wondering if there was any way I could connect things to it. I only has 2 cords left, i ripped out what i think was the airport and the microphone. The 2 that are left seem to be for power and video.

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

What is happening I press the power button, the iBook chimes, HDD makes its regular "computer was just turned on" noises and then the computer sits at the Grey Screen and the little swirly loading thing comes up and nothing else happens. What happened before the issue I was browsing the web last night and before turning it off for the night I ran MainMenu's batch tasks. I have been using MainMenu for several months with zero issues up till now. My sister said she needed to use my computer for a few minutes so I turned it back on. It sat at the Grey Screen for 15 minutes so I force shut down and tried again. After another 15 minutes I went to bed (it was getting late) and left it to see what happened over night. Somewhere in my 8 hours of sleep the computer gave up and turned itself off. I have not heard any tell-tale signs of an HDD failure - no clicking, buzzing or scratchy noises. Possible Culprits UNO - has been installed for over a month but it does have access to system files so I'm not clearing its name. MainMenu - Been using for a while but it was the last thing I did before the problem arose. What I've done to fix it - Reset the PMU by pressing Shift + Option + Control + Power Button - Boot off restore disk and repaired the disk in Disk Utility. The volume bit map and volume information needed repair. is the poor sucker dead?

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy parents recently bought an iMac. Yesterday my mom was playing a game when the computer froze. Neither force quit or holding the power button was doing anything so in her frustration she unplugged the system. Today, after plugging in the system again, it won't turn on.
I press the power button on the side of the wireless keyboard and the green light on the keyboard turns on for about 3 sec and then starts flashing. No fans start up and the screen does nothing.

I assumed it was because it was in a Windows format, so booted Windows, but it then turned out it wasn't formatted at all. What is the easiest way to make this an HFS+ (the Mac OS extended format), and how do I do it as I can't see it anywhere on the Mac (including Disk Utility)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have my Pismo G3 HD cloned to a Iomega Mini Max Ext;HD for back up. I leave it permantly plugged in because I use a partition for my iTunes lib and iPhoto Lib.When I "wake" the G3 the Mini max comes on automatically and when I put the G3 to sleep it turns off ( Blue Line, light). NormalBooting from the cloned ext.HD everything seems to work a litttle faster. (More space I suppose) But when I put the G3 to "sleep" the ( Blue line, light) does'nt turn off... but "Noise wise" it seems to be off.If I turn the ordi OFF then the light goes out.... Is this normal ? and if not, how can I change my set up to fix it ?

Preferably not by a software, would disconnecting the hard drive fan temp sensor wire disable the fan? If not could i disconnect the fan? If so where is the fan? and the wire that connects it? also i do not care if it is not 'safe'.

My monitor resolution is 1920x1200, and it doesn't have a DVI port. Only VGA and HDMI. Everything worked fine with Leopard, and I can see the 1920x1200 option listed in the System Prefs. But in SL, this option disappeared, instead they added 480p,720p,1080i, and 1080p.

It wont let me install this program from my new, second hard drive because the message i get is that it supposed to launch from the primary or running hard drive. A technician tested my optical drive and found it was set to Master. My readings indicate if the optical drive is to be set to Master , then the Hard disk needs to be set to slave. Changing the optical to slave seems very difficult, so, How do I set the hDD jumpers to slave instead. I presume they exist? I need a link and instructions as to how to perform this on my powerbook G4 1.67ghz.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have had my macbook go to sleep an not fully wake up, the keyboard, cd drive wake an the screen would just turn the LED on, it brights up but does not show anything.i do NOT think its hardware, i believe the os is just not turining on the screen or speakers. it has done this 2 times an had to hardboot. before i hardboot it, i let it sit for a few minutes to see if it would wake up fully , an tried to close the lid again. also is there a short cut to restart or put it back to sleep so i dont have to hard boot. i dont expect to have this happen again , but if it does a key would be nice

I just received my 3rd replacement mac pro, the second one (same spec, apple replaced it for me) is here too. I'm trying to get the 'new' one up and running. They are both identical spec - stock Octo 2.8, with 8800GT, 500GB HD, and Airport.
Anyway, I bought a 750gb Samsung F1 on the 'old' mac pro and installed my OS and all my audio software and plugins on there. The 500GB drive holds only the audio data (no OS). Is it OK to just remove one boot drive from the 'old' mac pro, and put it in the new one? The are both the same spec machines...
The reason i ask is because i am getting very scary and random SHUTDOWNS on the new mac pro, all of a sudden - it will turn off, then briefly (for half a second) the fans will spin again, then it will die. It is as if something is tripping the power off, or messing with it at least. It's done it several times now. The first time i was doing a time machine backup, came back to the computer an hour later, and it was off completely. It wouldn't start for a while, then all of a sudden, it did on its own, a couple of seconds after i tried pressing the switch.
I tried to run the apple diagnostic test, and shut down after a minute or so. So i took out the stock 500GB hard drive (only the 750GB left in it now) and i'm running it again. We'll see what the results are. But anyway, has anyone done this? It should be ok to take the drive out and put it back in, right?
i just upgraded by hard drive and cloned it with super duper.
my hard drive name when in os x, appears as default Macinstosh HD, however when i startup and hold option to select Mac or windows. the name is what i named the cloned image (which is 'mac clone'), was wondering if there's a way to change this? not really a big deal if not, just being OCD.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy wife accidentaly dropped our ibook with the screen open. It landed on the corner of the screen, and the right hinge cracked a bit.It still close, but not perfect. It also seems that the hinge get worse every time I open and close it, so I left it open.happened a couople of weeks ago, and the machine it self runs perfect (or so it seems, no trouble since)I took it to my local Apple center and they said the hinge is a part of the screen, so to fix it they?ll have to change the screen. This is very expensive, especially due to the fact that it still works perfectly.The guy added that they MIGHT be able to improvise and just glue (or whatever) the hinge What do youthink are the chances that they can fix it without changing the screen?
