It's not an issue as such, more of an annoyance (when trying to keep things tidy and organised) but on all 3 of my external HDD's a folder 'Desktop' keeps appearing. It's empty on all drives.

I was searching for ways, but it seems that was with older versions because I can't find a general button under preferences on my imac.
I found how to change the size of them and arrange them, but I can't find a way to hide them..
I've got an external HD hooked up to my iMac and it has some software on there that brings up a CD icon on the desktop.
Is there a way to hide just that specific icon?
I know you can go to Finder and uncheck so that it doesn't show CD/DVD icons on the desktop...but that would mean anytime I pop in a CD it wouldn't show up and I don't want that, just want to hide the specific App icon.
Attached is a picture of the desktop, the new drive icons are a result of a new drive partitioned out. I would prefer not to see them on the desktop but want to see the Macintosh HD, what method would I use to do this.

Does an app exist that hides all desktop icons in certian spaces? For example, I use space two for all my non-work things and would be great to hide the messy desktop this space.

I just bought a MBAir for my daughter, and I created an admin account for myself and a managed account for my daughter. I don't want my daughter feel uncomfortable that her old dad appears sharing her computer and monitoring her. Is it possible that my account icon/picture is hidden or removed from desktop while I am still able to use the account?

My last enquiry was with regards backing up Time Machine to an AirDisk connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station, but this is not a recommended solution. Now that I have been able to afford a new HDD that works with my iMac, this is my current setup, which I established using the excellent website by Pondini:Â
- HDD connected via USB to iMacÂ
- iMac backs up to its OWN PARTITION on the USB HDDÂ
- Several Portable Macs back up to the other partition on the USB HDD using sparse bundles via WiFi (drive shared by iMac)Â
Now on my iMac, I have both partitions appearing on my desktop. However these partitions are SOLELY for TM backups and I don't want them to appear on the desktop (mainly due to other users perhaps fiddling around with them).Â
I know that I can use Finder to hide all connected drives from the Desktop, but I DO want USB drives that I connect to actually appear on the desktop. How can I hide ONLY the TM partitions (specifically) from the Desktop??Â
I have found something which suggests that I can use the chflags command in order to hide specific HDDs/partitions, but will this have any effect on Time Machine backing up LOCALLY and also via NETWORK? I was reluctant to "hide" these drives without checking first whether it would cause any problems for Time Machine backups.Â

After doing some research today I still have a few basic questions about RAID arrays that I was hoping someone could answer.
1) Could I form a RAID 1 set using only two external HDDs, of the exact same capacity, make and model, and a MacBook with OS 10.5? That is, would I only need to connect the laptop to the external HDD enclosures, and the enclosures to each other, with the relevant cables and the software would do the rest?
2) I kept coming across the warning that a RAID array is redundancy and NOT a backup system. This seems simple enough: a file deleted accidentally on the source drive is deleted on the RAID array. So would I be right in saying that a RAID array along with a system running, say Carbon Copy Cloner with its archival backup, would provide both backup and redundancy?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MBP (see signature) and two Freecom 500GB USB external Hard Discs. Is it possible to somehow set up these two HDDs in a RAID 1 configuration under OS X. The reason for this is that right now I have a large collections of films on the one of the HDD and would hate to loose them all if the disc failed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Mid-2007 MBP... I upgraded it to a 500gb HDD some time ago and I'm currently running 10.6.2.
If I were to buy a new MBP (hopefully a Core i5 one if/when they come out), would it be possible to simply swap the HDD from the old MBP into the new one?
I'm aware that Time Machine and/or imaging products like Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper are ways of achieving the same thing, but I'm interested whether the physical hard drive swap would work in theory.
Generally speaking, is it healthier for the HDDs to remain spinning most of the day
Or have them spin down after x minutes idle, but spin up at least ten times a day when I need to access them (or use spotlight for any reason)
I've tried searching the forums and extensively on google as well. I can't seem to find anything that solves my particular problem. I just purchased an AEBS from the apple store a few days ago so it's probably the latest model. I've since purchased a powered USB hub so that I can connect my three external wireless drives to it. For some reason the base station will only detect 2 drives at once. If I have all three connected at the same time it will still only detect the most recent two of three connected.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a mid 2007 Macbook Pro, 2.4GHz, 4GB Ram, 160GB HDD. My iPhoto library has been slowly taking up all of my disk space, currently almost 80GB worth. So I decided to get another external HDD to temporarily move it to until I replace the Macbook Pro's HDD.
So I initially purchased two 1TB drives, one a WD My Book, and one a SimpleTech. I hooked them into my powered USB hub along with my two other 500GB external drives, and started formatting the first one while zeroing it out (as per instructions on a site about how to set up a RAID mirror). It said that it would take 16 hours, so I came back the next morning and the format had failed. I tried to redo it, but it would not work. The error is:
Disk Erase Failed
Disk Erase failed with the error:
File system formatter failed.
Next I tried to format the other drive, and got the same error. Both drives were unreadable by OSX (they were initially formatted for Windows). So I thought that maybe putting 4 drives on the USB hub may have maxed it out? Finally, I purchased another drive, a 1.5TB Free Agent, and tried to format that. Same problem as the others.I am just not sure what to do?I should mention that I am down to only 700MB of disk space, after having moved all my Documents to an external HDD, so things are really thin. Could the low disk space have an effect on the formatting?
I want to upgrade the HDD on my macbook pro and I need some help on compatiblity issues - is it compatible with a SATA300 or the SATA150?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat connection type would you choose when buying a new external hard drive?USB 2 isn't very fast, but Apple seems to be de-emphasizing Firewire and eSATA isn't even an option on anything except the Mac Pros AFAICT.

So I want to get new MBA. But going from 500gb hdd MB, will need to set up wireless HDD for my pictures and music. Is it best to do all of it on one external hdd or can I mix n match say podcasts n my favorite pictures on internal hdd n the rest on the external?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got a new 300 gig external hdd for $70. It is pretty sweet. I formatted it with fat32 so I could transfer files quickly between my Mac and PC. I began to transfer my files from my old 250 gig drive. When it would come across an especially large file, over 4 gigs, it would stop and give me error -1309. What gives? I suspect it may be a problem with the fat32 however I don't know. I might have to reformat it for mac only, but I really don't want to do that since I have a USB and fw800 drive. Does ntfs work for Mac? Or is there any other format that works well and supports large files?
View 4 Replies View Relatedsorry for the cryptic thread title, didn't know how to describe this in a few words:
Some time ago I read somewhere here that RocketRAID cards alter drives attached to them in a way that makes the drives not recogniseable to other SATA chipsets/ports. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find that thread again.is that (still) true?I'm asking because I'm planning on some drive juggling in the near future and don't want to be negatively surprised.
I'm saving up to buy a 13" MBP come next refresh and am planning to upgrade the internal HDD to the Hybrid Seagate XT drive.
Is it safe to assume the XT will still work with the newer laptops due to the size/connector being standard?
I'm thinking of getting the HDD ahead of time so when I do get the MBP I have it ready to go.
I just discovered that even though external drives can be backed up with Time Machine, Time Machine won't let you restore files from them if they fail. You can only restore files from a secondary drive if that drive is mounted, which is impossible if that drive has failed.

I currently have 1 PC (Windows7) and 1 MBP (Snow Leopard) in the house, the PC has 2 additional HDDs attached with movies and music on them and they are in NTFS format. I can view the contents on my PC via my wireless G network on my Macbook through sharing etc. Now my problem is that I'm getting rid of the PC (hopefully for an iMac in the future) but right now what sort of device would I need to build/buy to attach the 2 NTFS HDDs to the network so my MBP can still access the media on them?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was doing a major cleanup with an external Seagate USB HDD due to low free disk spaces. It has two partitions/drives: FAT32 (using it for on other non-Apple machines like Windows 2000 SP4) and HFS [Time Machine only]). I threw about 30,000 items (copied from an old Windows 2000 SP4 machine's HDD with NTFS back a few years ago) from FAT32 partition/drive into the trash can. However, I am having problems emptying it.
Most of them were emptied, but some were left behind. This four years old MacBook Pro's Mac OS X 10.5.8's Trash dialog boxes said "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." and "Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "<filename>" is locked. To empty everything in the Trash, including locked items, press the Options key while selecting Empty Trash".
[URL] for the screen shots/captures of the error messages. I tried holding Option key and emptying trash, but that didn't work. I used Finder to look at the files, and they had locked status. So I unlocked them which worked, but I can't delete the empty folders/directories, and these don't have locked. What's going on and how do I empty the trash?
