PowerPC :: Adding 2nd Optical Drive To Powermac G4

Feb 12, 2008

i added a 2nd optical drive (Pioneer 115D) to my mdd dually 1.25 G4. BUT, i'm sure I didn't do it right. Sure, it recognizes the drive, but I put them on the same bus (Ata-33). I should have them on separate bus', but I have 2 hd in the rear ata-100 drive carrier and 1 in the front ata-66 carrier. Can anyone tell me how to effectively put them on separate bus'? is there a website with specific directions on how to do it this way? The reason why I was told to keep them on diff. bus' is b/c they won't function as well (data lockups b/c same bus can't handle data).

MacBook Pro :: Adding New SSD Replacing Optical Drive

Jun 9, 2012

I am looking to remove my Optical Drive and replacing it with a SSD. My question is, once I replace it will I need to remove Lion from my HHD and install it on my SSD? And if so, how do I go about doing this? Also I would like high performance from CS6 so should I install it on the SSD as well? All the other non apple apps should be okay on the stock HHD or should I just buy a 250GB SSD and move everything over at once with a clone?

Info:
MacBook Pro, iOS 4.3.3

MacBook Pro :: Adding SSD And Moving HDD To Optical Drive?

Jun 28, 2014

I have an early 2011 MBP unibody design.

Current Specs...

*2.3Ghz Dual Core Intel Core i5

*8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 Ram (Upgraded from 4GB)

*320GB SATA Hard Drive

At the moment it has a 320gb hard drive (installed stock by apple). I am planning to remove the hard drive, install a Samsung 840 Evo 250gb SSD into the internal drive bay and then use an optical drive caddy to also keep the 320gb hard drive in my computer.

How to install the SSD and set it up with the OS and a few applications however keep my personal files and media on the 320gb hard drive.

What would the be the best way of re-installing the OS onto my newly formatted SSD?

How would I set up my MBP properly to save certain files (e.g. caches etc) to the HD or SSD?

what the read/write speeds will be like for the SSD (does my MBP support SATA 3?)?

PowerPC :: PowerMac G5 New Hard Drive Setup

Oct 16, 2007

Pardon the ignorance here, our mac guys are no longer with the company so I'm doing my best to get stuff working over there... I've got a powermac G5 with no hard drive. It died/used elsewhere/stolen, no idea. I'm assuming the rest of the machine is in working order. We purchased a new 250 Gb Hitachi SATA hard drive. Plugged it in and booted off the OS X install disc. Get the apple wallpaper with the spinning "hourglass". Shortly after I get a message in a few languages telling me I need to restart the computer by holding down the power button. We've tried another install disc, same result. I put the hard drive in another mac and formatted it, OS Extended (journaled). Same result. There was some Kingston ram installed in the machine, I removed those 2 sticks, same result.

PowerPC :: Removing HDD Drive Bay Fans From PowerMac G5

Dec 3, 2008

I've cleaned all my components except the HDD bay fans on my G5 Powermac. I've searched google about 5 pages deep and no luck. I have the service manual but it doesn't show how to remove those fans either. Anyone know of a link that shows how to remove them? I'm very good at taking stuff apart but I just can't seem to take this fan assembly apart. Maybe it's my kryptonite?

Should I get that same drive or should I get the Pioneer one that has the 20x dual layer plus Lightscribe? I heard the Lightscribe one is basically an Asus drive and don't know if that is good or bad. Does anyone use Lightscribe?

PowerPC :: G4 Optical Drive Blocking CD - Not Ejecting

Jan 28, 2008

I have an iBook G4 with the slot load Optical Drive and right now I can't get the disk that's currently in it out. When I press the eject key I can hear it trying to eject it but then it goes back inside and it reads normally. I need to get the disk inside it out for the disk costs more than the computer it's in. I tried several ways to eject it, the slot isn't bent but I took a knife and felt inside the optical drive for anything that can be blocking it and noticed some piece of metal right in the front of the optical drive blocking the CD inside. I think it's something to protect the CD while it's in the drive but it look's like it's jammed. I will take the computer apart and pull the drive out if I have to but is there an easier way?

PowerPC :: Take Logic Board Out To Get Optical Drive?

Jan 8, 2009

I picked up a 12" PB for 160 USD today. It had a bad battery and noisy and seemingly non functional optical drive, stock configuration. Looked like someone tried to open it up and failed to put back one of the hinge screws. I believe this is causing a green line (crimp in the video cable) on the screen. My question is: I have never replaced the optical drive on one of these. I bought this for a friend whose ibook died and he has a nearly brand new dual layer ATA superdrive in it that I can replace into the Powerbook. I knew this was daunting. Then I really just looked at the ifixit steps and yeah, you have to dismantle the WHOLE computer. There are 46 steps to replace the optical drive. Has anyone attempted this? I don't understand why you have to take out the logic board to get the optical drive out? On the upside, the near dead battery is eligible for the replacement program, so Apple is sending a new 125 dollar battery. Sorry I am rambling, just freaked at how much work it is to put a new optical drive in these things. Major surgery. someone on MR said they did it before.

PowerPC :: G5 Quad - Great Computer - Crappy Optical Drive

Jun 14, 2006

I've been having problems with the optical drive on my G5 Quad for the last few months. It makes a clanking noise every few minutes, similar to the sound it makes when you put in a cd. Also, every now and then when I put in a cd it just doesn't read it, and it makes itunes crash. The drive is an LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B. I have read lots of bad things about this drive on the internet, and it also happens to be much slower at importing dvds than the pioneer drives that are (or were) also shipping with some G5s.

I finally went down to my apple store, in The Netherlands. I explained the problem to the tech guy, and he said they would replace it under warranty. However, when I asked if it was possible to get a pioneer drive, he said they had no control over which brand they receive on replacement parts, but that almost always they get pioneers. Well, I took it in and they replaced the drive. They refused to do a test on it though, arguing that they were fixing another G5 and wouldn't be able to hear the noises I was complaining about (there was also a strange noise coming form one of the fans). The guy suggested that I brought it back some other time, and said he was absolutely sure he wouldn't find anything (turns out these guys also happen to be clairvoyants, or so they seem to think!) Coming from America I find it really hard to believe how rude and stupid the apple people can be at this store in The Hague, but unfortunately I can't avoid having to deal with them while I live here (there are endless horror stories about this particular shop). I don't have a car, so I had to take a cab there and back, which ran to about 20, plus all the trouble and the wasted time. But sure, why not just bring it again some other time like the guy said?............

PowerPC :: PowerBook G4 Possible Logic Board? - Optical Drive Spins At Full Speed

Aug 25, 2007

I have a PowerBook G4 15" 1.33GHz that up until now ran flawlessly. Today I was watching a movie on it with some friends when it randomly shutdown. Since then, it no longer turns on. The battery is fully charged and there is no problem with my AC adapter. With just the battery, nothing happens when I press the power button. When the AC adapter is plugged in and I press the power button, the optical drive spins at full speed for a few minutes and then the PowerBook shuts itself down again. I have attempted reseting pram and pmu with no success. I think it could be a dead logic board but I'm not sure. Would it be worth the money to buy a new logic board or should I just part it out?

Then after 5 or 10 minutes it turns itself back on, reboots and runs fine. (It is set to re-boot after a power failure.)I suspect what is happing is the power supply is turnning itself off due to some kind of a thermal, self protection switch. PowerPC :: Powermac G4 Will Not Power On

Jan 27, 2009

Currently it is almost entirely unresponsive. I came to wake it from sleep a few days ago and it refused to wake. It is totally unresponsive to the power button on the Apple Cinema display and when the power button on the front of the tower is used the button lights up blue and then goes out. There is no fan activity or other sign of life. There is no burned oder or evidence of anything charred. It is a dual 1.42 MDD FW800 machine with AGP graphics. Model: M8570So far I have:

-Removed and reseated the graphics card, RAM and other PCI cards.
-Removed battery and let it sit unplugged over night.
-Performed PMU reset. (once)

At this point I have come to believe the power supply needs to be replaced. it is model: 614-0224 (360w). After looking online they are stupidly expensive, from $180 to over $500 each. I will be ordering a new MB (PRAM?) battery (Saft 3.6v LS14250C) and replacing that as well.

Questions:
- Have I missed anything here? Is there any other explanation or method of troubleshooting I should try?
- Is there any cheaper source for the power supplies? Why are they so absurdly expensive? Does anyone here want to give me a sweetheart deal on one?
- Can anyone recommend a source for the LS14250C battery locally in Manhattan? Radioshack has it as an online only item and wants $15 for it.
