I just got a Mac Pro (2006/2007) and Installed Vista Ultimate x64 from a DVD. When I rebooted and got to the Vista desktop, it no longer lets me used the superdrive. I can eject it from Vista but when I insert a disc, all it does is spin up forever and lock up Vista.
I have reloaded Vista 3 times and get the same issue. Everything else works except the superdrive.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThere's no disc in the drive, but it's locked up and won't accept a disc into the slot whatever I do. It never had trouble reading discs before--none of the spinning-without-reading issues I'm seeing other people have had. I have frequently ended up with ghost discs, when the computer hangs onto a disc image (or two) after ejecting the actual discs, but it's never caused a real problem. There is no disc image now.

Why dont you post the explanation for certain MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 superdrives not being able to read: dvds/ cds/ blank dvds/ blank cds/ burned dvds/ burned cds or a combination thereof?
Apple's firmware 2.1 update released late june 2007 unwittingly fried many superdrives functionality and apple pulled the firmware update as soon as the buzz on the internet took hold, but not before many drives were randomly zapped.
Unfortunately it seems that apple doesnt publicly admit any problems on their website, in the hope that users will not notice the loss of functionality (my drive cant recognise blank/burned media, but published (pressed) dvds and cds are recognised, hence one doesn't notice there is a problem at first).
As title says... notebook is reading and accepting that the Superdrive is there, but when a disc is inserted, it spins for 15-30 seconds and ejects.

The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 can't mount disks, both CD and DVD, about 90 percent of the time. I've tried resetting the PRAM, but I don't know if it's related to this.
My MacBook Pro running OSX Lion no longer recognizes blank discs: the disc does not appear on the desktop or in finder.
When I try to burn a playlist from iTunes I get the error message: "The burner is in use by another application".I am also unable to eject the disc using Disk Utility and have to reboot to get the disc out.Other media discs (software, music etc.) are read without a problem.

I have just brought back an external superdrive to my local Apple Store because it wouldn't physically swallow any disc. So I got a new one and back home ... same problem. I plugged it to my mac mini, my MacBook Pro, my 1st portable PC, my tower pc ... nothing. I made sure the second time that I didn't plug it to the same mac first (in case I had a faulty USB port which could destroy the superdrive). Plus it ejects CDs and DVDs fine if I insert one 3/4 into it. So the mechanism is working, but no matter what I do, it won't swallow any disc.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst, my MacBook is a little more than a year old and is no longer covered under warranty, so I would like to try any possible fixes (like cleaning the drive) before having to buy a new drive. Here's my problem: when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, it spins around and clicks a lot but never seems to really catch, and after about a minute or so of this, it ejects itself. It never shows up on my desktop, so the computer is unable to read anything from the CD or DVD. I know the problem is not the CD or DVD, because I've tried the same discs on other machines and they work fine. This problem came up on me gradually. It started happening a few months ago, and maybe only 1 out of 10 or 20 discs would it do this. Then it became a third of the time, then half of the time, and now it's about 99% of the time I try to insert a disc. I was able to get one disc to work a few days ago, but when I ejected it and reinserted it, it didn't work the second time.

Last night I put a +R DL DVD that worked in another machine and it just ejected it, I then put my 10.5 disc in and it worked fine.

After I reloaded the OSX (and did all of the software updates from Apple), I tried loading a program from an original installation CD/DVD. It would not load--it tried, but eventually ejected the disk. This happened over and over--I tried different types of discs (music CDs, DVDs, software), and the ONLY CDS/DVDs that work are the MAC OSX installation discs. View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm having issues with burning data DVDs on my Mackbook Pro (running Snow Leopard) I'm burning large files (DVD/Blu-Ray rips) and the discs are unreliable. I'm trying to pinpoint the problem but haven't been able to. Some of the discs are not able to be read by the Mac - sometimes it spits the disc out a few seconds after being inserted...other discs just spin and spin and spin and it seems the Mac cannot read them - I can't even eject them without rebooting the computer. There seems to be no rhyme or reason between discs that read OK and discs that don't. Some discs were burned via the internal superdrive and some via a Sony USB dual layer burner. All discs burn and verify OK - there was no indication on any of them that anything went wrong. I am using Sony and Memorex discs, single and dual layer. Are there any known issues with either the Mac superdrive, or the burning of large (4+ GB - almost 8 GB) single files? I've got a good number of discs here and like I said all burned OK...but I've been having to go back to retrieve files and am only now finding that some of the discs are giving the problems described above, which means many of the backups I thought were legit are no good. Alternatively, if there is a better method for backing up these files . They are stored on hard drives being used by a streaming video player. I thought backing up each file to DVD would be a reliable backup method but apparently this is not the case. It's not ideal to back up to other hard drives - there are too many files and it would be too expensive. I don't know that online backups would be feasible because of the amount of time it would take to upload them and the space they would take up would likely be too expensive to maintain.

However when I inserted the CD into an older mac, the CD showed up on the desktop with all its photos. The superdrive runs DVD's fine, any reason why it would not run the CD? Anything I can do to make it read the CD?

I have a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and out of nowhere the SuperDrive suddenly won't read anything. I put in a CD or DVD and it'll make a short whirring sound about every 4-5 seconds and then after the third time it automatically ejects the disc. Is my drive dead? The computer is still covered under my AppleCare protection plan. Do I need to just bring it in and have it replaced?

I am having an issue where the superdrive in my BRAND NEW mac pro isn't working correctly. It doesn't read DVD's consistently, System profiler hangs when you click on disc burning and after that the drive does not respond to eject commands. When you do get the tray to open, insert a DVD that is a known good disc, it will "mount" on the desktop then when you click on it, it hangs trying to read the disc. When you right click and select eject, the icon just goes away and the disc does not eject. A restart at least allows me to eject the disc. Resetting SMC has no effect on the drives behaviour. Or suggest a good aftermarket DVD drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I was discharged from the hospital recently, they gave me a disc with all of my x-rays. Unfortunately, the disc won't read in my MBP. It inserts just fine, spins for a second, but never actually mounts on the desktop. When I eject the disc, I see the cd mount image briefly appear on the desktop before the disc pops out.Â

I am trying to upgrade my Dad's mac mini to Snow Leopard and have encountered a problem. When I insert the Leopard disk I cannot get it to read the disk, the box comes up as if I have inserted a blank DVD. I have also tried inserting ilfe09 disk and have the same problem. The drive does appear to be making an odd bleaping. I have tried resetting the PRAM and cannot get it to bleap?

It simply assumes the disk is blank when it clearly isn't. Now, if I insert a blank DVD and burn it, it works like a charm... but it will then NOT read the disk that it just burned??? How and why did Lion break my superdrive?

i have a late 2012 macbook pro 13.3" with latest OSX mavericks installed.I have this issue where when I insert this one blank CD RW into the superdrive, it makes a clicking sound for a while and then stops, and nothing happens(CD isn't recognised) ,CD can't be ejected either unless i restart my macbook .However when i try to insert another blank CD RW, it reads and burns just fine.

While the majority runs without any problems, quite a few cannot be read, although they work without any problems on my HiFi and on other CD Drives. The Super Drive on my MBP seems to be completely busted, whenever I try to read a DVD or CD it takes the disc in, spins it around a couple of times and then ejects it again without ever coming up with any options as to what to do with the disc. Discs don't appear in Finder either. It's obviously failing to read the discs and ejecting them within 30 seconds.Â
Now I've searched for a solution and as a result I've reset the NVRAM to no avail, and also tried using a CD lens cleaner but that seemed to have no effect either, I guess maybe as it got ejected within just 30 seconds as every other disc does.Â
The next solution I've found online is to delete Finder's preference files. The files I'm supposed to delete are "com.apple.finder.plist" and com.apple.sidebars.plist", however neither of these files appear to exist on my computer. Â
I remember discovering the fault while my MBP was still in warranty but I rarely use the Super Drive so totally forgot about it and it's now out of warranty

I have a problem on my IMac 27" (early 2010) when I want so listen to some CD. The Superdive doesn't read the disc (is clean of course) and it ejects after a few tried. On the other hand, no problems with DVD. So I don't know if is a software problem.
