Feb 27, 2008I just got a Mac Pro (2006/2007) and Installed Vista Ultimate x64 from a DVD. When I rebooted and got to the Vista desktop, it no longer lets me used the superdrive. I can eject it from Vista but when I insert a disc, all it does is spin up forever and lock up Vista.
I have reloaded Vista 3 times and get the same issue. Everything else works except the superdrive.

Mar 22, 2012I have a problem on my IMac 27" (early 2010) when I want so listen to some CD. The Superdive doesn't read the disc (is clean of course) and it ejects after a few tried. On the other hand, no problems with DVD. So I don't know if is a software problem.

When I try to burn a playlist from iTunes I get the error message: "The burner is in use by another application".I am also unable to eject the disc using Disk Utility and have to reboot to get the disc out.Other media discs (software, music etc.) are read without a problem.

Jun 16, 2009My wife has a PB G4 15". No matter what kind of disc is put in the drive, it gets spit out about 3 seconds later. Also, we have a 120 GB external HD that works just fine with our eMac, but no joy with the PB.

MacBook :: CD / DVD Drive Won't Read Discs
Feb 14, 2009First, my MacBook is a little more than a year old and is no longer covered under warranty, so I would like to try any possible fixes (like cleaning the drive) before having to buy a new drive. Here's my problem: when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, it spins around and clicks a lot but never seems to really catch, and after about a minute or so of this, it ejects itself. It never shows up on my desktop, so the computer is unable to read anything from the CD or DVD. I know the problem is not the CD or DVD, because I've tried the same discs on other machines and they work fine. This problem came up on me gradually. It started happening a few months ago, and maybe only 1 out of 10 or 20 discs would it do this. Then it became a third of the time, then half of the time, and now it's about 99% of the time I try to insert a disc. I was able to get one disc to work a few days ago, but when I ejected it and reinserted it, it didn't work the second time.

May 1, 2008There's no disc in the drive, but it's locked up and won't accept a disc into the slot whatever I do. It never had trouble reading discs before--none of the spinning-without-reading issues I'm seeing other people have had. I have frequently ended up with ghost discs, when the computer hangs onto a disc image (or two) after ejecting the actual discs, but it's never caused a real problem. There is no disc image now.
She is an old lady of a 12" titanium Powerbook G4. 867 MHz, 640 MB ram, running Panther 10.3.9.

Jan 31, 2008Why dont you post the explanation for certain MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 superdrives not being able to read: dvds/ cds/ blank dvds/ blank cds/ burned dvds/ burned cds or a combination thereof?
Apple's firmware 2.1 update released late june 2007 unwittingly fried many superdrives functionality and apple pulled the firmware update as soon as the buzz on the internet took hold, but not before many drives were randomly zapped.
Unfortunately it seems that apple doesnt publicly admit any problems on their website, in the hope that users will not notice the loss of functionality (my drive cant recognise blank/burned media, but published (pressed) dvds and cds are recognised, hence one doesn't notice there is a problem at first).

May 17, 2012I have a Macbook Air, Version 10.7.2 with a superdrive. Upon inserting a CD with photos on it, I could not find the CD in the finder. However when I inserted the CD into an older mac, the CD showed up on the desktop with all its photos. The superdrive runs DVD's fine, any reason why it would not run the CD? Anything I can do to make it read the CD?

Mac Mini :: External Superdrive Does Not Swallow Discs
Jun 16, 2012I have just brought back an external superdrive to my local Apple Store because it wouldn't physically swallow any disc. So I got a new one and back home ... same problem. I plugged it to my mac mini, my MacBook Pro, my 1st portable PC, my tower pc ... nothing. I made sure the second time that I didn't plug it to the same mac first (in case I had a faulty USB port which could destroy the superdrive). Plus it ejects CDs and DVDs fine if I insert one 3/4 into it. So the mechanism is working, but no matter what I do, it won't swallow any disc.

Apr 7, 2012When I was discharged from the hospital recently, they gave me a disc with all of my x-rays. Unfortunately, the disc won't read in my MBP. It inserts just fine, spins for a second, but never actually mounts on the desktop. When I eject the disc, I see the cd mount image briefly appear on the desktop before the disc pops out.Â
how I can get this disc to mount without pulling out my crusty windows laptop?

Dec 7, 2014The Super Drive on my MBP seems to be completely busted, whenever I try to read a DVD or CD it takes the disc in, spins it around a couple of times and then ejects it again without ever coming up with any options as to what to do with the disc. Discs don't appear in Finder either. It's obviously failing to read the discs and ejecting them within 30 seconds.Â
Now I've searched for a solution and as a result I've reset the NVRAM to no avail, and also tried using a CD lens cleaner but that seemed to have no effect either, I guess maybe as it got ejected within just 30 seconds as every other disc does.Â
The next solution I've found online is to delete Finder's preference files. The files I'm supposed to delete are "com.apple.finder.plist" and com.apple.sidebars.plist", however neither of these files appear to exist on my computer. Â
I remember discovering the fault while my MBP was still in warranty but I rarely use the Super Drive so totally forgot about it and it's now out of warranty

Nov 8, 2010I've been using this MBP since 2007, and, it's starting to fail me. I was using an external hdd on it since the internal one crashed, and, then the external one crashed. I just purchased a 250gig hdd which fits perfectly in my Macbook, but, now I have another issue that's been pressing me for some time that didn't bother me at all until now when I need to install Snow Leopard;
My Super Drive isn't reading discs at all, and, it's making this scary crackling noise. I uploaded a video on youtube of me putting 2 discs in it, 1 with content (World of Warcraft: The Frozen Throne) and the other without content (Just a blank CD).

Jun 4, 2012I put a cd in the slot drive to burn to my itunes. At first it seemed to behave as normal, it sucked the disk in, made noise, all that good stuff. Well I went to itunes to find the disk and it didn't show. It didn't show up in finder either. I decided to eject and try again, but the disk wouldn't eject. Since then there's been no noises from the drive. It seems like the drive just died, like it's not even trying to start up or work. The cd is literally a week old, and has been in my car cd player since I bought it, so I know the disk is clean. Also, I used the drive a week or two ago to burn several disks and had no problems with it. All my software is up to date and it reads the drive as being there, it just doesn't work.Â
I've spent a few hours troubleshooting this. Like I said, the computer doesn't even seem to realize there's a disk in the drive. I've tried restarting while holding down the mouse (well, trackpad actually), repairing permissions, blowing in compressed air, tried ejecting with terminal, gravity, resetting the SMC, and probably a couple other things I'm forgetting.Â

Jul 14, 2008I just purchased a mac pro about 4 months ago and I love it, I have never had a problem with it until today, I went to install a new program on it and it did not even read it, it made a hi pitched sound for a short time then stopped, waited about 10 seconds did the same thing. After a couple times of doing this it would eject the disc, so I figured I would try another disc, I have tried many different discs such as games, cds, programs and nothing has worked.

Dec 17, 2010I have an older Power Mac G5 that I had problems with, and hoped I could get a little help.I wanted to start fresh, so I booted the Mac OSX software disk that came with the computer, and I was able to get my computer back to factory fresh (software-wise). After I reloaded the OSX (and did all of the software updates from Apple), I tried loading a program from an original installation CD/DVD. It would not load--it tried, but eventually ejected the disk. This happened over and over--I tried different types of discs (music CDs, DVDs, software), and the ONLY CDS/DVDs that work are the MAC OSX installation discs. I have tried using a DVD lense cleaner and compressed air.

Nov 28, 2009I'm having issues with burning data DVDs on my Mackbook Pro (running Snow Leopard) I'm burning large files (DVD/Blu-Ray rips) and the discs are unreliable. I'm trying to pinpoint the problem but haven't been able to. Some of the discs are not able to be read by the Mac - sometimes it spits the disc out a few seconds after being inserted...other discs just spin and spin and spin and it seems the Mac cannot read them - I can't even eject them without rebooting the computer. There seems to be no rhyme or reason between discs that read OK and discs that don't. Some discs were burned via the internal superdrive and some via a Sony USB dual layer burner. All discs burn and verify OK - there was no indication on any of them that anything went wrong. I am using Sony and Memorex discs, single and dual layer. Are there any known issues with either the Mac superdrive, or the burning of large (4+ GB - almost 8 GB) single files? I've got a good number of discs here and like I said all burned OK...but I've been having to go back to retrieve files and am only now finding that some of the discs are giving the problems described above, which means many of the backups I thought were legit are no good. Alternatively, if there is a better method for backing up these files . They are stored on hard drives being used by a streaming video player. I thought backing up each file to DVD would be a reliable backup method but apparently this is not the case. It's not ideal to back up to other hard drives - there are too many files and it would be too expensive. I don't know that online backups would be feasible because of the amount of time it would take to upload them and the space they would take up would likely be too expensive to maintain.
