Power Mac G5 :: Failed Installation Leaves Black Screen / What To Do?
Dec 13, 2007
I have been given a 1.6 Dual G5 running 10.3. I tried to upgrade to 10.4, the first disc installed but crashed several times on disc 2. I had run DU previously to check there were no problem. Each restart took me back to disc 2 which failed to install. I then tried to install 10.5 (Leopard) booting directly from the disc, it started then crashed leaving a black screen with the following promt:
local host:/root* (a hash not an asterisk!)
Anybody offer any suggestions as to what I should do?

I bought my aluminum imac when it was released in late 2007. I had a 1 gigabyte stick up until now, but I decided to upgrade to 2x2 gigabyte sticks. When I took out the 1 stick and placed the new ones in, my computer would sound like it turned on, but the system really did not boot up. I have tried many configurations to see what the problem with the RAM is, and all I could figure out is that the computer will only boot up if the original 1 gig stick is in one slot. I checked both sticks with this, and they seem to register on my mac when I check the "About This Mac" section. Basically, I get a black screen if I use only a 2 gig stick, or both 2 gig sticks. I can have a maximum of 3 gigs so far, but I really would like all 4 that I paid for. I'm not so sure that it's a problem with the ram, especially because it is recognized by the system, but it can't boot up the system, so I am simply dumbfounded. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? I just recently installed Snow Leopard prior to getting the RAM if that has any importance.

I had a huge struggle installing Windows 7 through BootCamp. After the first time it rebooted during the installation process, it would not power up the screen (the computer and the setup were running, but the screen was off, not black, but off). I figured out that doing the rest of the installation through emulation software (I used VMWare Fusion) would work, and it did. Windows 7 should be fully installed, and works just fine if I boot it up through VMWare. But when I try to directly boot up from the Windows partition (not through VMWare), it shows me a flickering underscore ( _ ) for a while, then when it finally (if it does, sometimes it doesn't) goes to the window that says "Starting Windows", and you can see the logo coming up, it gives me a BSOD shortly after you can only see a fraction of the boot animation.

Each time I start my mac I get to login screen and after logging in get an error message and told to restart and try again - which does not resolve the issue. When I start my computer up in the morning everything else starts normally. First the light comes on on the front of the computer and on the bottom of the monitor, then the start up tone rings and the computer is fully running. But my monitor is black and I do not get the apple picture or nothing on the screen. I thought my monitor was going out, but we have another work station the same and I switched the monitors (same 27" cinema screen as mine). I can actually use the other computer and network into my computer and fully use everything on my computer. But my monitor is black (no display)! I have contacted MAC and have reset the PMU button many times and sometimes this works, but most of the time it does not. I just keep restarting the computer and finally it will start up normally with the display and everything.

After the 10.5.1 software I'm having a problem with distorted (stripes etc.) icons and menu dropdowns. Apparently not on my desktop or programs like Safari, Mail etc., only on icons and menu dropdowns, which I find odd. Sometimes it's gone, but after some time it reappears again. Anyway, sometimes my Mac (iMac G5, PowerMac12,1, 1.9 GHz) is going bonkers completely, which results in a first pink, then black screen. A hard shut down is then the only option. However, I guess it's videocard related (ATI Radeon X600 Pro). I did all the tests, fixes you can think of, but without any results. I contacted Apple support, but because this is an iMac, you can't just replace the card, they told me that the whole motherboard should be replaced, which will cost me approx. 700 EURO. Of course I am not willing to do that, which means that I'll have to buy a new Mac. Of course a new Mac is always a delight, but I find replacement after just 2 years unacceptable.

I installed several system updates on my 2007 iMac last night, running OS 10.7, and today I can only get a black screen with a flashing white power light when I try to start up. My computer will neither start up nor completely shut down, and my wired keyboard won't communicate either.

Do not want a nuisance to escalate into a serious problem thru benign neglect. Random black screen -- Turn monitor off then on, and all comes back fine. No loss of power in machine, no fan quirks, no overheating. Is it the Monitor? or the graphics card?

My G4 recently will not boot. I get the chime, it starts to boot, but almost never completes before I get the "you must restart you Mac" screen.I have the correct hardware test disc. I started using that two days ago. It still has not completed testing the logic board and the system is unresponsive. I guess that means the board is fried?

I've had problems with my Mac for a while now. First of all, it indicated ram problems with 2 beeps. I later fixed this by moving and changing around modules. It was solved, but now a new problem. The Mac seems to turn on, making its iconic sound for startup, but the screen remains black. After about a half to one minute, the fans go crazy and I have to shut it off. I've tried a few things like holding shift or alt, but that doesn't work as it doesn't even display a white screen.
I need to know what to do and I don't really have the time to buy new parts right now. I'm really a windows based pc fixer by the way so I'm new to fixing macs.

I have an application called AppFresh, which basically scans the apps I have for available updates, then it's supposed to update the ones that are available. However, every time I try to update an app, I get this response: "Download Successful. Installation failed (Bundle ID's don't match)." What does this mean, and how can I fix it? It'd be a handle little app if I could get it to work right.

I got wiped out by a lightning strike to my cable, and had to re-install Leopard. The first three attempts failed. After about five minutes into the installation, I would get a pop up saying INSTALLATION FAILED, COULD NOT COPY. I took the disc out and noticed there were some small dirty, greasy looking spots that had somehow gotten onto it. It might have been dirty fingerprints, I dunno. So, if this happens to you, clean the install disc first, before looking for other troubles.

I was running Bootcamp with Windows Vista smoothly until I decided to install Parallels 4.0 on my Mac 10.5.8. After installing Parallels, it loaded my Bootcamp installation which sort of freaked me out and so I closed Parallels without doing too much. When I booted Vista today, I tried running games that requried Direct X or enhanced graphics and they are not working! These games used to work fine before I had installed Parallels! I even tried fixing the Bootcamp installation by repairing the drivers through the installation cd that came with Leopard, but I still get the same problem!

I went to install Windows XP via bootcamp as I no longer have a windows XP machine, but still need windows XP for a few things work related. The install failed, the CD I used was kinda scratched and it missed a few of the files during installation so I skipped them (usually not an issue as they were driver files and such). Well the installed failed and cannot complete. Now I'm stuck in a vicious loop where it wants to try and complete the install every time it boots. I'm using a non-apple keyboard, when I try to hold down what would be the equivalent of command+option+O+F it does nothing and either starts the windows installation all over or tries to continue and finish the current install. No matter what, no luck getting the windows disk to eject.

I got a new Macbook today, and installed the Mac OS X 10.5.6. It stalled so I shut down, and when I logged in again Finder and Spotlight doesn't work. Though my hard drive says is labelled Mac HD: Mac OS X 10.5.6 , I am continuously prompted that Spotlight closed unexpectedly. And when I try to reinstall the Mac OS X, the DVD no longer appears on the desktop and Finder too, cannot be opened for me to locate the DVD.

I VNC to my iMac all the time (usually from iPhone with Jaadu, sometimes from another Mac with Leopard's Screen Sharing function: Connect to Server vnc://....) But lately it only works for a couple of days. After that, the remote computer's screen goes black and accepts no input. (But I can see/move the mouse cursor.) Once I get home from whatever trip I'm on, I then see that it's the same in person: all-black, no response to clicks or keys. I can move the mouse but I can't do anything at all. There's no solution except to force power-down.
For security, I run the "Computer Name" screensaver with password lock. The first time the black screen appears I see just a flash of the password dialog and then it's gone. After that, I never see anything but black (and the mouse arrow). The remote computer is NOT crashed, because it accepts the VNC connection request and password, and because it keeps churning out work from Folding@Home (which I can see on my stats page). But after a day or two away (maybe one VNC session per day) the screen and input are gone. Anyone else see this? (The only two changes made to that system lately: a new version of EyeTV software--but it's not recording or anything. And the 10.5.7 update. I'm guessing it's something new to do with 10.5.7.)

Google has announced the first stable release of Chrome for Mac users, now available for download.

"We believe that it provides not only the stability, performance and polish that every Mac user expects, but also a seamless native Mac application experience that Mac users will feel instantly at home with."
The new release can be downloaded from [URL]. It requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later, and only supports Intel Macs.
Chrome is based on the WebKit rendering engine and APIs maintained by Apple, but in contrast to Safari, it offers a variety of unique features such as extension plugins that can modify how the browser works.

Recently, i've been offered flash update, so I accepted and followed the process. It always ended at 5% with "This installation failed". I know, that is definitely an error message which says everything you need to fix it. Digging a little deeper, i found this: Flash Player Install Manager[447]: Unable to execute privileged task. Ok, so I started searching for users with similar issues. Every single advice was to do a permission repair which, apparently, didn't solve the issue.
So the next idea was to check if something is wrong with my user account. Creating a new account with admin privileges resulted in same install failure.Again, dead end. Unless using last resort which MUST work. Enabling direct root login and logging in finally allowed the package to install. Something must have changed inside Lion with last updates. The package still asks for password when run as normal user, so it has to have all the privileges needed. Another possibility I was thinking of was that the process drops privileges too soon(so that's Adobe's problem then).

I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

Most of the time my G5 has difficulies starting up from the original installation-dvd provided with this computer. The drive is the standard Apple delivered LG/Hitachi GWA 4165B, seldom used and normally functioning well. The disk shows up on the desktop, but choosing the dvd as the boot drive in system preferences or using the C-key only results in a very short flash of the wellknown "question-mark system folder" and a startup from the hard drive: after a restart with the option key pressed even the boot manager cannot find a bootable optical disk at all.
The problem might be connected to my observation that the computer sometimes looses contact with the ATA/ATAPI-bus; suddenly I cannot open the drawer anymore and system info reports that no optical drive was found. In this situation restarting doesn't help; I have to shut down the computer completely and after restart all is well again for as long as maybe the whole day or a view hours.GeForce 6600 LE

I recently tried to upgrade my powerbook with a new HD (see but forgot to format the drive before trying to install the operating system. I gave it another go last night but with the new disk installed and everything back in place, it would not power back up. I took it to bits again and checked everthing was connected including the little ribbon cable from the keyboard but still nothing. I put the old disk back in with the same results. there is no response from the power key at all. Everything is pushed home where it should be so I'm a lttle worried about what could have happened.
