Power Mac :: G5 Ethernet Cannot Connect
Mar 12, 2012
My powerpc g5 is connected to my home network via ethernet but cannot connect to internet. All PCs on the network can access the internet except the g5. On the "network" in system preferences the status for the ethernet is "connected, ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect." I've tried re-building the ethernet connection, adding DNS server IP addresses, nothing helps.Â

I just bought an airport extreme w/gigabit, and I'm wondering if it's possible to connect an ethernet switch to one of my pro's ethernet ports and have things like my xbox 360 and ps3 run off it, however, my mac pro would be connected to my airport extreme via 802.11n. is that possible?

It is on my home network which I have been using for months. I have made no changes to my router or network setting. Other devices will still connect to the wifi with no problem and I connect through the ethernet connection with no problem. I have disabled the wifi and restarted my computer with no luck.

my PS3 and Mac are in my room, on the same desk, my wireless router is downstairs. The PS3 is getting a poor connection (40% signal) sometimes cutting out which makes it hard to download PS network stuff. My mac has a solid signal. What I want to do is connect my PS3 directly to my Mac using an ethernet cable. I just want to know how to get the PS3 to connect to the Macs connection through the wire. Apparently the PS3 needs to recognise the mac as a router?

I bought an iMac and have been loving it but one thing I can't figure out how to fix is why it can't connect to the internet through my Ethernet cable. My PPC G4 connects just fine. I've googled and found nothing that helps. I tried deleting my system preferences but that didn't help. It just says there is no Ethernet cable connected even though it clearly is. I can't try with wifi because for some reason anything running OS X can't connected to my homes wifi. Not sure if this matters but it's a 27" iMac, 3.03 ghz intel with 1tb hard drive.

So as of mid-day my Macbook will not connect to the internet in our apartment via ethernet. I have tried all my roomates ethernet plug ins and it still does not work. It shows a green light next to ethernet saying it his hooked up but it won't load any pages. I've tried network diagnostics? When I try to go to a webpage it goes to a white screen and after 5min of trying to load it bring up the "not connected to the internet" text. I guess I'll make a trip to the apple store wednesday if at all possible unless you guys come up with something. This machine is out of warranty so I'm wondering what would be the worse case scenario and how much am I looking at spending?

I've had the 13" aluminum macbook since October 2008 and I've never had a problem with the wireless or an Ethernet connection. I turned on my computer the other day and I couldn't connect to the internet through my ethernet port. I've determined it's not my connection (friend's macbook connects fine) and I've tried connecting to other ports around my campus and it still doesnt work. On network settings, the light is green, cable detected, assigned an ip address and dns but it simply times out when I try to connect to anything (firefox, itunes store, mail, etc.). I'm fairly new to mac os x.

I'm brand new to Mac. I just got a MacBook Pro, and I've been having some troubles connecting to the internet at home. I have a LinkSys WRT54GS router with Firmware Version: v1.50.9. I'm unable to access the internet through both ethernet and wireless. Concerning wireless, I have tried connecting using WEP, and have tried entering passcodes both with and without an "$" and "0x" preceding the 10 digit WEP passcode. I have also tried switching the encryption over to WPA2, and still nothing. I have even disabled the security to see if it's able to connect -- it's not. I had some error regarding not being able to find it's IP or something along those lines.

I have my iMac (2009 model) and MacBook Pro (2011) connected to a D-Link Gigabit switch using CAT5E cables.Switch is connected to my router using gigabit connection. Switch is showing gigabit connections for the link to the router and the link to the MacBook Pro (MBP). Link to the iMac only shows 100 mbit connection.
Cables are ok since behaviour is exactely the same when I change/swap iMac and MBP.
When I go the network/ethernet settings in iMac and change from "automatic" to "manual" and select gigabit, the iMac claims there is no network cable connected at all. When changing back to "automatic", connection is re-established but again with 100mbit connection only.

I'm trying to connect my iMac to my macbook via ethernet, and my macbook recognizes my iMac, but my iMac doesn't recognize my macbook. This means that in my macbook network settings, the Ethernet icon is green, while in my iMac network settings, the Ethernet is yellow. Both say Status: Connected, but my iMac's ethernet is yellow for some reason. How do I get it to turn green and recognize my Macbook? I don't think this makes a difference, but my iMac is 10.6.8 and my macbook is 10.5.8.Â

I have an iMac 10,1 and am unable to connect it to the internet using an ethernet cable.
I have a more recent Mac Book and I just plugged in the ethernet cable to it, clicked the setting in Network settings, and I was connected.Â
On the iMac it keeps saying, diagnostics can't fix it etc..?
On the left panel in Diagnostics, Ethernet has a green light, Network Settings an orange light, and ISP a green light (internet and Server are Red).
I'm using Comcast cable, and they just say the settings should appear automatically on a Mac (which they apparently did on my Mac Book!)Â ...

I have a G5 DP 2.0 and have been using it's built in ethernet port connected straight to my BT home hub (adsl/router) for years. Any way I add into the mix a netgear 1000Base layer 2 switch and the G5's ethernet doesn't work, reconnect straight to the router and all is fine. Now tested with new cables and tested on every port on the switch. By the way the port light on the switch don't light up when G5 attached. Now have tried the switch with a g4 and all is fine on every port and supprisingly I've stuck a PCI card in the G5 and that works as well. Just can't work out why the built in won't work through the switch but will direct.

I'm here at university and the wifi here sucks! it is so slow, it is working. However there is an ethernet port and I did connect to it this morning. But, this evening I tried connecting again and it wouldnt let me!At my university they require you to put in your student ID and pw in order for you to use the internet for both wi-fi and ethernet. But when i tried this evening it dint ask for my student ID or password. I went to settings and it did say that there was a connection and that "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet"
i dont understand how come now it isnt working. I aksed my classmate nextdoor if his internet port was working through the ethernet port he said it was.... i am not that tech savy so keep vocabulary to something simple lmaooo.

My mac book air pro book laptop won't connect to the Wifi or via ethernet in my hotel room.Although yesterday, we were in another hotel and it connected fine.
My other HP Pavilion belonging to my fiance's laptop works fine in the room.
The technician tested the in room connection but was not authorized to help me with my Mac individually. It sees the connection under the wireless networks, it connects to the network but upon trying to gain access to a web page, it appears as if I am off line or not connected.

I just installed the Home Edition of Windows XP (from 2002) via Boot Camp. I'm having trouble getting online in Windows. Most of the Internet options seem to revolve around modems, which I don't have. I use a router connected to my computer via Ethernet. There's also a wireless function, which I can use in a pinch. How would I get the Windows side to connect to the Internet via Ethernet? I don't intend to spend much time online on the Windows side (due to viruses), but I'd like to be able to go online if necessary.

On April 2nd I downloaded mail from my ISP mail server using Mac Mail. A couple of days later while downloading mail in Mac Mail all I get are the circles with the triangle. Safari will not connect. I worked with my ISP yesterday, and they think I have a bad cable(s). Today I connected a known good Ethernet cable from the computer to the DSL modem with the same results of no connection with Safari. I am therefore thinking something is wrong with the built in Ethernet. In an iMac PPC G4 flat screen, is Ethernet on a card or part of a chip? Any idea on the cost to fix the problem? There is an Apple Store close to where I live. Once all the cables are reconnected Wi-Fi does work. This leads me to believe that the problem is in the computer, and not the cables.

I don't know what happened, but a connection that I use frequently has suddenly stopped working on my 4-year-old MacBook (10.5.8). I have tried some of the fixes suggested for wireless connection problems, but none have worked. I live in a place where wireless is not always a viable option, so I need my Ethernet connection...
