Power Mac G5 :: Configuring A New Internal HD As A Storage Drive?

Dec 5, 2007

I'm leaning towards picking up a 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 to throw in my empty slot. I'm not a huge fan of Seagate these days, but this seems like the best choice of drive at this size. I've got a Dual 2.3 G5 with 6.5 gigs of memory.

I'm doing a lot of video editing with Final Cut Pro and want to setup this drive to store my editing environment. So it's only being used as a storage device. All the initialization specs I see are to configure the drive as the bootable drive. Can anyone point me to some specs to set this up as a storage drive?

Power Mac G5 :: Want To Use Second Internal HD As An Internal Back Up Drive?

Nov 10, 2007

I want to keep my applications etc on one internal HD and use my second internal HD as a back up.I am a graphic designer, and i have been backing up to an external LACIE Porche 160 Gig firewire HD. This has worked fine, but...My second internal HD (112 gig?) is still loaded with 10.3 and has adobe CS2 on it along with some other crap that I no longer need.I have loaded Adobe CS3 on my primary drive and have all the files I need on that one...What is the best way to set up my second HD as a "slave" drive to improve the performance of my G5 dual 2 Ghz??Will there be any issues now that I loaded Leopard on the primary HD?

Power Mac G5 :: Need Larger Internal 2nd Drive For Final Cut

Dec 2, 2007

I'm using an older G5 single processor. I've reached the Max with a 300 Gig Seagate 2nd internal drive. I've run out of FCP srcatch disk space. I have about 75 Gigs left. I researched a Seagate HD Model ST3750640AS - Interface SATA - it's 750 Gigs. I just wanna make sure that the ones sold by New Egg etc., are compatible. Here's New Egg's; [URL].

I also wanna make sure that I've choosen the correct path to back up the 250 Gigs of data; First I need to copy all of the scratch disk files into another Hard Drive. Perhaps one of my external Lacie's. I'm familiar with how to Erase the New Drive, and format the New drive using MAC OS extended Journaled. Next (in turn), I'll need to copy all that data (little bits at a time), back to the New Seagate internal drive.

Power Mac G5 :: Seems To Break Any Hard Drive - Plug In It - Via USB ESata Or Internal HD

Dec 3, 2007

I get unexpected problems with a dual 1.8 G5 (2 GB RAM, 2 disks inside, both 320 GB). In fact, the machine seems to break any hard drive I plug in it (via USB, eSata or internal HD). The internal hard drive hosting the system is clicking every five minutes or so, and two external hard drives are now mostly unsable (they unexpectedly unmount when copying, or they just don't mount at all). I checked them all with DiskWarrior. Some times, they can be repaired, sometimes not.

The problems appear with Tiger and Leopard as well. I lost Time Machine backups form an external hard drive (Seagate 320GB, got "keys out of order" error message in DiskUtility). The other external HD I have to put my photos (750 GB Seagate) can be used in both eSATA via Lacie PCI card and USB. Both USB and eSATA fail unexpectedly (unmount while copying) and everytime the hard drives seems to fail more and more everytime I try to use them.

I used Apple products since years '80 (SE30) and did not have problems whatsoever with previous machine and my actual macbook Pro. This G5 is getting me crazy, and I don't want to put hundreds of dollars repairing since it is worth less than 800$ actually... Is it the power supply, the logic board, a problem with electric voltage up and down? I always found solutions to problems but now, it is the first time I don't see the light... I feel like everytime I plug a hard drive in this G5, I play with fire and may loose my backups and archives!

Configuring Power MAC G5 For Final Cut Pro Workflow

Feb 13, 2012

I am new to MACS as most of my experience has been with windows OS. I recently took some classes in video production (which initiated me to the MAC environment) but abandoned it due to frustration caused I believe by under-resourced computers in our lab (Mac Pro w just 3GB RAM running Final Cut Pro X) too many hours wasted watching the rainbow windmill. My offer to buy 16GB of RAM and loan it to them for a test was rejected.I want to continue working on video editing, so found a couple Power MACs and FCP v5.1. One is a 1.8Ghz dual (bought before I knew better) and the other a late 2005 Quad which I am configuring for editing. It currently has 10GB or RAM and I expect to bump that to the 16GB limit. The hard drive space shocked me. Who would design a case like that to hold just 2 drives? I see that additional internal drive cages are made by 3rd parties and am considering that. But before I get too involved, I need to learn more about MACs.I obviously bought these used and didn't get any install discs. There are 2 drives in the Quad. A 500GB holds about 100GB for the OS and applications. The second drive is 250GB and empty. As I understand it, the Quad supported only SATA version 1 (150MB/s) correct? Will it support 2TB drives?

I'd like to separate the OS and APs from the data and think that the 250GB drive would suffice for that purpose. Can the files on the boot drive be cloned to the 250GB drive so I can use it to boot from? In the alternative, I might replace both with 2TB drives if the OS (10.5.8) will support that. The primary concern here is to keep all the existing APs functional.I am just now taking a linux class and the advice there is to create lots of different partitions. Onr for the kernel and system files, another for APs, etc and to create a swap file on a different drive for optimal performance. I think that would be the same for the scratch file for video rendering.

Aside from the 2 HD bays, I am studying the idea of a SATA card that would support internal as well as external sata devices. Given that rendering is processor-intensive, is there any advantage to adding a SSD via a SATA card running at 3 or 6GB/s? One reference I read indicated that the video can't be processed faster than the existing HDs can take it. If true, then I wouldn't see much advance in adding faster drives. But if someone that ahs experience with such, I'd like to get some input. As to the 1.8 Dual G5 that I grabbed before i 'discovered' the Quad, I'll probably use that more for video capture since its PCI-X slots will accomodate my video capture cards inputting mostly miniDV tape media.

Intel Mac :: How To Transfer All Data From Old Internal Hard Drive To A New Internal Hard Drive?

Feb 10, 2012

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

Power Mac G5 :: Replacing Internal Hd On G5?

Nov 7, 2007

Just this AM my G5 slowed down in the middle of a job, I restarted and that was it. Dead HD. I call apple care and took it to the apple store where they suggested I buy and install a new HD.

So, I'm thinking I'll buy a Maxtor 300 MG.

The question(s): The instructions on replacing the drive (from apple support) say to make sure and buy an ATA that is 3.9 wide if adding an internal HD but it doesn't say what to buy when replacing.

Do I buy SATA? If so, will it fit (they're 3.5 wide). Do I need to buy anything else? Will my old G5 have any trouble with the new HD?

IMac :: External Storage - Ssd Drive - 2TB Hard Drive

Nov 22, 2010

I'm curious what people use for external storage on their iMacs. I have a Mac Pro which is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm debating whether to get a new Mac Pro or to get an iMac, which would be a pretty good speed bump from my Mac Pro 1,1. I'd get the ssd drive, and the 2TB harddrive and get aftermarket RAM. But what I like about the Mac Pro is the upgrades you can do. And I like the four hard drive bays, for storage and backup. I've got over 3 TB of photos and music/tv/movies, so I'm going to need an external drive. In addition, I'd like to be able to backup everything. Is there an elegant way to do this on an iMac with an external drive that isn't super loud and hot?

Hardware :: Unable To Transfer Music From External Drive / Reformat The Internal Drive?

Jun 13, 2010

I recently bought a macbook pro and am making the transition from a pc to mac. It's all gone well so far, but I'm not sure what to do with my music. I currently have about 200 gb of music on my external hard drive (connected to my pc.) The internal hard drive on my pc does not have space to accomodate the files on my external.

I do not have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" currently enabled because my internal doesn't have space. (And I like having the original music files in a separate location as I have over 30,000 songs). I don't know how to transfer my external and music to my macbook, since I will have to reformat the drive (which would erase everything on it, therefore I somehow have to make a backup either on my mac or on my pc. but what to do about the iTunes .xml file and iTunes folder on the internal pc drive??).

IMac :: Second Internal Hard Drive In Place Of Optical Drive?

Feb 5, 2010

I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

OS X :: External FW800 Drive Almost As Fast As Internal Laptop Drive?

I just bought a 640gig Samsung 2.5 inch / 5400rpm drive and threw it in a FW800 case from Other world computing. Running some test using the QuickBench 4 and AJA system test shows me that this little bugger is almost as quick as my internal drive on my MacBook Pro (Model number: WDC WD6400BEVT-00A0RT0). How can this be???? I did a varity of test with different file sizes and the Samsung get 70 MB/s vs about 84 MB/s for the internal drive.

My internal drive is pretty full vs this external drive that is currently empty. I do a lot of video work / large gigabyte files on the drive so perhaps I have a defrag problem? I really expected my internal drive to blow the FW800 connected Samsung out the water?
