Jun 13, 2010I recently bought a macbook pro and am making the transition from a pc to mac. It's all gone well so far, but I'm not sure what to do with my music. I currently have about 200 gb of music on my external hard drive (connected to my pc.) The internal hard drive on my pc does not have space to accomodate the files on my external.
I do not have the "Copy files to iTunes music folder" currently enabled because my internal doesn't have space. (And I like having the original music files in a separate location as I have over 30,000 songs). I don't know how to transfer my external and music to my macbook, since I will have to reformat the drive (which would erase everything on it, therefore I somehow have to make a backup either on my mac or on my pc. but what to do about the iTunes .xml file and iTunes folder on the internal pc drive??).
OS X :: External FW800 Drive Almost As Fast As Internal Laptop Drive?
May 16, 2010I just bought a 640gig Samsung 2.5 inch / 5400rpm drive and threw it in a FW800 case from Other world computing. Running some test using the QuickBench 4 and AJA system test shows me that this little bugger is almost as quick as my internal drive on my MacBook Pro (Model number: WDC WD6400BEVT-00A0RT0). How can this be???? I did a varity of test with different file sizes and the Samsung get 70 MB/s vs about 84 MB/s for the internal drive.
My internal drive is pretty full vs this external drive that is currently empty. I do a lot of video work / large gigabyte files on the drive so perhaps I have a defrag problem? I really expected my internal drive to blow the FW800 connected Samsung out the water?

Oct 25, 2010I am considering buying an external Dvd Drive they all seem to have a max speed of 8x, as does my macbook pro drive.
I am currently in the process of ripping my dvd collection would I benefit from this? I assume I would save the internal drive a lot of wear and tear this way, but my need is for the increase in speed.

May 13, 2012I'm confused - when I look at my Storage info under the "About This Mac" item, my internal drive shows that it has "141.6 GB free out of 499.25 GB" Yet when I look at a Finder window, the drive shows 230.89 GB available. That's an almost 90 GB difference. I'm assuming (until someone tells me otherwise) that the "About This Mac" information is the 'truest' but I, frankly, don't know.

Mar 14, 2012I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

ITunes :: Deleting .ipa Files To Save Hard Drive Space?
May 17, 2012I need to free up room on my hard drive. I would like to delete all my .ipa apps. Can I do that? I have itunes match, and I also sync to icloud. I know when I want to reinstall an app I just do that through the cloud. I have deleted apps to test that this is ok but the apps end up getting reinstalled. Here is what I want to do:
1. delete all my .ipa files on my computer to save a lot of hard drive space (I have a lot of apps....)
2. stop syncing to my computer, and only sync to icloud
3. rely on itunes match for backing up music
4. have calendar and contacts sync through icloud
5. if I need to reinstall apps do that through the tab on the app store for 'purchases.'

Feb 16, 2009My bootable drive is a JBOD (concatenated array) of two internal disks. Therefore I cannot use Bootcamp. I have placed a third blank drive in the third hard drive bay. I have my download of the Windows 7 beta, which I burned to a bootable disk using Disk Utility (.cdr file). Now, might any of you in the audience be able to inform me of what I should do to get the Windows OS from the bootable disk onto the completely blank internal drive?

Jul 4, 2012I have a 13 inch Aluminum Late 2008 MacBook. Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53). Currently I have a 160 GB SATA disk as my hard drive a d 4 GB of memory. (Is it time to upgrade or what?) I recently bought a Western Digital 1 TB internal hard drive to replace my exisiting internal hard drive. I spent a lot of time last night trying to first- connect this new hard drive to my computer so that I can then clone the existing hard drive and then hoping that I would get that done so I could install the new hard drive. No such luck.
My current hard drive is partitioned as follows:
Name: Macintosh HD
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Size: 132.5 GB
Name: BOOTCAMP
Format: Windows NT File System (NTFS)
Size: 26.69 GB
When I was partitioning the new drive I did so as follows:
Name: Macintosh HD
Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Size: 973.51 GB
Name: BOOTCAMP
Format: MS-DOS (FAT) --- This was the only option that I was given that I thought would work. I did not have the option of "Windows NT File System (NTFS) to choose from. Question # 1: is that going to be a problem? I only run 1 program on Windows and that is the only reason I have BOOTCAMP on there at all. However, I do HAVE to have that program. Like I said it didn't give me the option to choose Windows so I didn't know where to go with this. Any help with that would be awesome.
Size: 26.34 GB (I just used the same size that was current, or close to it.) I connected the Western Digital 1 TB through an external device, partitioned it as stated above, and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drives. The first one went through fine. (It took 2 hours and I went to bed before it finished.) This morning I woke to see that it had gone through well. I then started the process with the BOOTCAMP drives. However, before I started it gave me errors stating that I wouldn't be able to run Windows off of the Cloned BOOTCAMP drive. Question #2: Is it because of the Format type I chose when partitioning?

After all that setup my system was running fine.Now I plug in my external HD's (via FIrewire 800, side Chained together), Leopard asks me if I want to use my 1TB for Time Machine (I say Yes), no to 500GB). My system backed up everything just fine, and I even tested Time Machine for the first time wich was kinda Fun.

Sep 2, 2014Okay so, I have an External drive that sat in a USB enclosure until the USB connection snapped off on the inside. I figured I'd remove the (SATA) drive and re-purpose it as an internal drive. When I did this, it shows up as unreadable. The drive itself shows up in disk utility apps, but the two partitions (one was a Time Machine backup, the other a regular Mac-formatted (Extended) partition, do not. I get the ol' "This drive cannot be read. Initialize?" message when the machine boots up. how I can get back to the data I know is on there? Am I gonna have to do a RESTORE to another drive?

Nov 14, 2009Try as I might, I cannot save a document, or anything to m y external hard drive that I plug into my MacBook Pro. Its my hard drvie, its NOT write protected, and I backed up all my PC files there so as to "Move to a mac" This mac will be useless if I cannot figure this out... what a pain.
It tells me that when I try to save it the hard drive is full or write protected, neither of which is true.... what could be the problem here?
I can't believe also there was no resident paint type program with the mac, and that you can't have tabs always open on Safari.
Also, I hate the way everything dissapears off my screen and I have to search through all the icons on the doc to find what I am looking for.... I really miss the start button with all my programs there for browsing... some things are definitly clunkier on the MAC..

Buy 2.5" external Firewire 800 hard drive enclosure
Buy 2.5" SATA drive (probably 500gb WD Black or something)
Step 2:
Whack new drive into new enclosure and fire it up
Step 3:
Clone my existing 250GB internal MBP hard drive to the new one in the enclosure using Carbon Copy Cloner etc
Step 4:
Remove new hard drive from enclosure and use it to replace the internal hard drive in my Mac
Step 5:
All being well stick the old hard drive in the enclosure and use it as an external

Jan 23, 2009I have owned a Mac Mini for three years now (my friends convinced me to try the Apple way and this is my first Mac). The CD/DVD died just three weeks after warranty expired and Apple said (in essence) 'tough crap...you didn't buy AppleCare'.I have functioned without a CD/DVD drive since then, and everything was fine... until a week or two ago. We installed an update in iTunes, and everything started running S...L...O...W... So, we rebooted the computer! Instead of rebooting, it made the "bong!" sound and then a screen with an apple and a spinning wheel runs indefinitely. We let it run all night the first time and it stays on that screen for as long as you let it.
