When I open a new finder window, it doesn't have anything in it. If I change the preferences to another place, I get the contents. If I change them back to the desktop, I get nothing. Searching for something gets me items, but I would like my finder window to behave again. I just don't know where the preferences file is now, in Lion..

I've been trying to find the title mentioned file on my Vista machine for a while now, and no luck. I've read numerous articles describing how it is located at
C:/Users/*Username*/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/Safari
But I have everything except the Preferences plist. Ultimately I just want to adjust the settings as you would with terminal to make Safari 4 use its blue inline progress bar, I think this is a bug (which I have reported).
Secondly, would anyone happen to know how to make the User Agent a permanent change to Firefox 3, as this is the only way to be able to access Live Mail, as Safari 4 seems not to want to play ball with it. The temporary fix so I have found is to set the User Agent as Firefox 3 (Even the IE8 didn't work??).
I found something annoying with the leopard finder and view info with folder size. For example, the system folder thinks its 562.5MB, but the Library folder one level into the system folder is 3.25GB. Why does the system folder not add the sizes of all the other folders under it? Is there any way to change a plist file or something so that it does this?

I was having issues with Safari so I wanted to delete the plist file. However, when I went to, I was told the file was locked. It let me delete it anyways, but I never recall locking it. I'm hoping it was just a fluke, but is there possibly some kind of malware or trojan that would have locked it?

Well 10.5.6 has been so much fun and full of surprises - like a box of chocolates Gump would say. For some reason, the sleep function settings won't reset. I had my iMac set to sleep the HD after about an hour. I changed the setting to never, but it still wants to sleep. Never had any trouble like this before the update. My install is almost virgin as I had to reinstall because of the update. I don't have any add-ons running or anything like that. Can I delete the .plist file for these settings to start over?

And when I create my own recent files saved search, it's hit or miss as to whether it actually shows my recent files. So I just finished my latest short film, and I exported it to Finder. However I don't like the preview Finder chose for my video, it simply chose a random frame from my video and made that the preview of the file. I have a custom poster I made for the video I would like to make the preview of the file. I've look at other websites and they all mistook "preview" for icons. I am not talking about the icon of the file, I am talking about the actual preview of the file. If you open the Info pane of an image or a video file, there will be a tab under "Open With" named "Preview" and shows the preview thumbnail for the file. Can anyone tell me how I can manually change the preview of a file? I thought about importing the video into iTunes, change the cover art and take it out again, however because the file is encoded with Apple ProRes 4444 iTunes won't accept it and even if it did it would have been converted to other format, which is something I am trying to avoid and I would like to keep it ProRes 4444.

So I go look for the bookmarks.plist in my Library to do whatever it takes - actually I am looking in yesterday’s Timeline Library - and I cannot even find a Safari folder in my Library, let alone the .plist. Where do I find it? Suddenly Finder keeps asking me to input my password whenever I delete a file to the trash. how to find the path to a file in a Spotlight search result. In Snow Leopard I would get the path to a file or folder by just holding the mouse over the search result in Spotlight. I don't see that in Lion.

My internal HD packed up on me a couple of months back. I've replaced but now I'm looking to rebuild my mail (folders and emails). Â
The old HD is now in a USB SATA Hard Drive docking station and I can access (what seems to be) most things.Â
I cannot trace the com.apple.mail.plist file which I presume I'll need to rebuild things. I've reviewed other posts on here and noted the usual location of this file but it is not showing when I search. I have seen conflicting info - one which says that I need to access 'Users - Library - Mail' and it'll be located in there (but I can't even find the Library folder under 'Users' as below:
The second option is going through 'Library - Preferences' and locating it there but, again, I can't trace the relevant file. All I can see is the following (and it won't open to allow me to see what is in it):Â
If it's not showing there should I presume that everything is lost? I hadn't moved or altered anything prior to the HD failing so one would presume it should be there.Â
