OS X V10.7 Lion :: Integrate Apple Macs In A Windows Environment?
Mar 14, 2012
Mac OS X offers a method by which you can "join" an Active Directory server by going through System Preferences --> Users and Groups --> Login Options --> Network Account Server. Is this the same as making a windows pc join a microsoft domain?
If so, is this the preferred method of integrating Apple Macs in a pre-dominantly windows environment.

When i started using Apple products 2 years ago, i created a mobile me account based on the knowledge i had than...........
unfortunately in my transition into becoming an apple fan, i created another account using a me.com adress.
Now, on my iphone, ipad and mac i can login to " find my iphone" and " icloud" photostream, but on my macbook it just says " this is not your primary account".
I am not a smart computer user, but would love to have it all work together!

I hav a MBP w/ both Snow Leopard & Windows 7 64-bit via BootCamp. i wanna be able to access (read/write but if not, read only access is acceptable) my iTunes content (music, videos, apps, etc), which is on my Mac partition, from my Windows side without having to create a separate, periodically updated copy of my contents on my Windows partition, which is what some of the solutions I read hav u do. (I don't like having to waste space unnecessarily)
Basically, I would like to be able to sync my iPhone to my iTunes content on my computer from either OS and have all the content be current and in sync (for my 3 platforms: Mac, Windows, & iPhone) regardless of which side I am accessing it from. I wouldnt wanna hav to log onto my Mac side just so i can sync a song i downloaded on my iPhone to the library on the computer; i would like to be able to do this from my Windows side as well. Finally, is there a way to do all this without the use of an external drive?

I am thinking about getting the mac mini server for my fathers business. Everyone uses a Windows machines in his business, so I was wondering if anyone has this setup (with the back end being the mini). I was hoping people could let me know how well it works, and how they use calendars emails without outlook etc.

Is it possible to create a base install of Lion with MySQL, Git, Pear, PHP Unit / DBUnit Test and other tools and have it sitting on a server or Time Machine? I am looking to create a dev machine so 3 developers have the same environment and when any other people join we can just order the Mac Mini and install the base system. Not bothered about actual applications, just a base install?

I have a MacBook Air and just installed MySQL.I read the doc which I downloaded and should be able to run "mysql" from terminal as descibed below:Suppose that your MySQL programs are installed in /usr/local/mysql/bin and that you want to make it easy to invoke these programs. To do this, set the value of the PATH environment variable to include that directory. For example, if your shell is bash, add the following line to your .bashrc file: PATH=${PATH}:/usr/local/mysql/bin I checked on my terminal with ls -al, but no ~/.bashrc also no ~/.profile files. Echo $SHELL shows me that I am using /bin/bash as shell. When I run export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/mysql/bin then it works and I just have to type "mysql" to get the mysql command line but as soon as I kill my terminal and open a new terminal this setting is lost.

I got a new 7200 RPM drive for my MBP. I'm debating on how I want to integrate it. What would you do and why?
1. Slave new drive and clone the current HD with 10.5.8 to the new drive, then install. Update to 10.6.2 at a later date.
2. Slave new drive and clone the current HD with 10.5.8 to the new drive, then install. Update to 10.6.2.
3. Install new drive internally, install 10.6.2, use time machine to restore data.
4. Install new drive internally, install all applications fresh, slave old drive and copy over documents, downloads, etc. the old school way.

I recently replaced my eMac with a MacBook.I backed up my iTunes library from my eMac to disk and loaded the same into the MacBook. The contens of that disc now appear as a restored playlist.Music that I've since placed onto my MacBook appear in order underneath the restored playlist. The two lists are totally separate and I'm wondering whether there is any way to get the two to integrate so they're alphabetical?

Though users of older Intel-based Macs were led to believe they would have to spend $169 to migrate from Tiger to Snow Leopard, new reports state the $29 upgrade disc will work just fine.
In his review of Snow Leopard, Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, Mossberg reveals that those who have been hesitant to upgrade their Mac will be able to take advantage of Snow Leopard's bargain price, without the need to install the intermediate Leopard operating system first.
"For owners of Intel-based Macs who are still using the older Tiger version of the Mac OS, Apple is officially making Snow Leopard available only in a "boxed set" that includes other software and costs $169," Mossberg said. "The reasoning is that these folks never paid the $129 back in 2007 to upgrade to Leopard. But here's a tip: Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140."
Wired also confirmed that they were able to upgrade a system directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard. In addition, it is possible to completely erase a hard drive and install Snow Leopard without a pre-existing operating system in place, enabling users to bypass the possible headaches of an upgrade and go with a clean install instead. Wired said many users upgrading from Tiger should probably consider backing up their files from Tiger and doing a clean install instead.
"Of course, the transition isn't guaranteed to be as smooth as it would be from Leopard to Snow Leopard," the report said of the Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade, "and that's because some older, Tiger-only third-party applications need to be upgraded to newer versions that work with Leopard or Snow Leopard."
Originally released in April 2005, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is more than a little long in the tooth at this point, especially considering the astounding success of its follow-up, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

With any Unix machine, one can run at the command line:- apachectl -S This will show all virtual servers configured in Apache, and will break if there are any obvious problems in the httpd .conf files. It's very handy for testing a new configuration before restarting the server. With Mac OS X Server though, this doesn't work properly. Sure, I can run that command and see a virtual server or two, but with the introduction of the server Apache wrappers, the command line tools read a very different configuration than the `serveradmin` tool does.
e.g. Wrappers like:-<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER>
....
</IfDefine>
or <IfDefine WEBSERVICE_ON>
[code]....
ps. Running `sudo serveradmin stop web && sudo serveradmin start web` really compared to `apachectl graceful`; it's painfully slow and doesn't provide a way to test a custom configuration before attempting to restart.

I have my Gmail account setup with IMAP in Mail 3.0 (Leopard), with about half a dozen labels that of course appear as folders in Mail's sidebar. Labels that I create myself appear as normal folders and look quite nice and neat, but Gmail has it's own "[Google Mail]" folder (which has a white folder icon rather than the default blue?) which contains my All Mail and Starred folders. Ideally I would like both the All Mail and Starred folders to appear in my mailbox section along with drafts, junk, ect. - but I know that this is probably not possible. But I'd be happy to settle for just removing the [Google Mail] folder and having All Mail and Starred appear as normal folders. Dragging them out of the [GM] folder gives me the following error; "The IMAP command "RENAME" (to All Mail) failed with server error: Folder name "All Mail" is not allowed. (Failure). So obviously it's trying to move the All Mail folder on the Gmail server itself, which Gmail doesn't like. I've also tried changing the IMAP path prefix in account setting to [Google Mail], which put All Mail and Starred as normal folders but then removed all my other folders and screwed with my messages - I was forced to revert to my old setting and re-download all my messages again. All 7500+ of them. Does anybody know of any hacks or plugins or workarounds that could help me out here? I know it's silly and OCD-ish, but it really bugs me having this [Google Mail] folder in my sidebar.

Apple may be laying the foundation for TRIM support in future Macs, a technology that should allow their solid state flash drives to maintain optimal performance throughout the life span of the systems. The Mac maker's most recent 13-inch MacBook Pros display an option for TRIM support in their system profilers on SSD-equipped models, one which isn't present in either the second-generation unibody 15-inch MacBook Pros or the latest refresh sporting Intel's Core i5 and Core i7 processors.TRIM is essentially a command that lets operating systems like Mac OS X inform SSDs of which blocks of pre-written data are no longer in use, allowing them to be wiped clean internally.

i have newish MBP and iMac. I also run several windows 7 based pc's. Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly. Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale. I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.

I have a Mini with Lion Server. My wife has a MacBook Pro as her main computer. I imported her user from the MacBook to the Mini, but am wondering how to keep everything synced on her User between both machines. As she works on her laptop won't her documents on the Mini become outdated quickly? It seems like there should be an easy solution to this but I haven't found it; I'm new to Mac though so I may be missing something obvious.

There are a lot of forums on this subject, but are specifically about Apple removing Keychain sync with iCloud. I cannot find any solution as to how to do it now they removed this option.
I have installed Keychain2Go but it just synced right away to "somewhere". I guess it's their servers. So I am concerned about that as I don't know this company.
So is Keychain2Go the only solution to sync Keychains now? I cannot find any other solution.
