App Store :: Lion Installation - Limit On How Many Macs?
Apr 19, 2012
I know Lion need only be purchased once and installed on multiple computers, but is there a limit on exactly how many? Plus, can Lion be installed on a Mac that isn't mine, like my mother's MacBook for example, or would the installion require me to have an account on the MacBook?Â

I want to know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it.
Currently, my iMac's HD is overloaded by my 220GB collection (mostly podcasts).
My idea is to have the iTunes collection on an external hard disk (e.g. a Western Digital Passport 320GB).
When connected to the iMac, iTunes on the iMac reads the MP3's from the external disk.
Then, when I'm on the road with my MacBookPro, the MBP's iTunes would read from the same external hard disk.
A problem could be how to make the second MBP recognize any updates to the iTunes list that has changed when used with the iMac since the last hookup.

I am using the App Store to update iPhoto. It has frozen with "less than a minute" to go. How can I unfreeze it, or clear it and start again? I have tried closing and re-opening the app, to no avail.

I had to deleted everything on my Mac and reinstall the OS (which is Lion btw).I noticed that I don't have iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand (the iLife suite basically), which I had when I had bought my MacBookPro. When I go to the Appstore and look for such applications it looks as if I have to pay for them. Is that normal? Why would I have to pay if I had the license when I first bought the computer?

I am looking for a way to limit bandwidth per application under Mac OS X Lion ; either with a dedicated app or Terminal command.
I didnt find any tools with Google or App Store : does that mean "limiting bandwith" is a *bad* idea ?Â

We'd like to be able to set our SUS service to only download updates during non-production hours.
We're running Lion Server 10.7.3 and latest Admin Tools.Â

We had everything working perfectly with an earlier version of Lion Server. The update to 10.7.3, or 4, seems to have opened access to all files for all users. Much to our surprise, this wide-open access started without warning. Â
- We have an external drive that contains all of the company's archivesÂ
- We had set access for one employee to get to the files he needs, and different access for another employee. Neither saw sharepoints outside of their access settings.Â
After an update, each employee can see and log in to all sharepoints. There doesn't seem to be a way to limit access for each employee now. I can set 'read' access for one employee, but it doesn't stop the other employee from accessing that sharepoint/folder.Â

Is there any way that the default stack memory limit for a user in Mac OS X Lion? You can you ulimit in Terminal.app to display information, you cannot change any values.Â
This is what is returned from ulimit when you try to change the stack memory size.Â
user@MacbookPro:~$ ulimit -s 81920
-bash: ulimit: stack size: cannot modify limit: Operation not permittedÂ
Also, the default value is 8192KB which is approx. 8MB. That is weak, especially on my 2011 iMac with 16GB of RAM. I mainly do scientific programming on my Mac (Fortran). These programs usually require a larger stack size. One option is to allocate data to the heap but that is very slow.Â

Has anyone noticed a strange 10 user file sharing limit after upgrading to 10.7.4 server? Using DeployStudio to mass deploy 10.7.4 Lion images in a school. Since upgrading to 10.7.4 server, I am now limited to 10 logins on the repository. Thought this might be a DeployStudio issue, but it seems more like the server is imposing the restriction. If I do a manual login to the shared folder where the image files are kept on the server, I can only do it from 10 computers and computer 11 will refuse to login.

I am using Apple Mail on Lion to acces a Microsoft Exchange Server. The mailbox is quite large, and I'd like to just limit access to the past few days worth of messages. On my iOS devices this is easily accomplished in Settings. But, I do not see a similar option in Lion/Mail.If it is not possible, is there any other way to limit the size of data accessed?

Have just upgraded my macbook to Lion. I logged into the app store, bought, downloaded and installed Lion no problem.
After upgrade I returned to the app store to download ibooks author. I can find ibooks author but when I try and install the app I have to sign in and I get a "connection failed" error message.
The same happens in iTunes when I try and view my account - "The network connection failed"Â
I can access the internet with no problems - including secure sites. I can access software update with no problems.Â
I have made no changes to my network settings - could sign in and download apps before upgrade, unable to after upgrade.

I don't understand how it happened, but a school I work with has had the SUS rip through 80Gig in a few days (Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8). Same as with my home server (Lion Server 10.7.3).

I have a Mini with Lion Server. My wife has a MacBook Pro as her main computer. I imported her user from the MacBook to the Mini, but am wondering how to keep everything synced on her User between both machines. As she works on her laptop won't her documents on the Mini become outdated quickly? It seems like there should be an easy solution to this but I haven't found it; I'm new to Mac though so I may be missing something obvious.

I have 2 macs - mac mini and a macbook pro Both audio outputs of the computers are teathered to my speakers with a Y cable. When computer one is playing music to the speakers, I'll be using computer two for work purposes. Should computer two experience an audible alert (instance message, new e-mail message, etc) the music will dim for about 30 seconds. How do I prevent the "dimming" of the music?

There are a lot of forums on this subject, but are specifically about Apple removing Keychain sync with iCloud. I cannot find any solution as to how to do it now they removed this option. Â
I have installed Keychain2Go but it just synced right away to "somewhere". I guess it's their servers. So I am concerned about that as I don't know this company. Â
So is Keychain2Go the only solution to sync Keychains now? I cannot find any other solution. Â

Mac OS X offers a method by which you can "join" an Active Directory server by going through System Preferences --> Users and Groups --> Login Options --> Network Account Server. Is this the same as making a windows pc join a microsoft domain?
If so, is this the preferred method of integrating Apple Macs in a pre-dominantly windows environment.Â

I have been using Macs since 1992, upgrading to new operating systems as they came out. Now have Lion 10.7.3. I have recorded video/movie clips mostly from online sources. I have never had problems playing these back until now in all my previous Macs. Now some will play, others when I click the play button come up with the message "supported disc not available". Do I have to buy an old Mac computer with earlier OSX operating systems to play these again? How can I transfer the content to a form that Lion will recognize if they will not open.

I have an iMac with a directly attached USB drive and a Mac PowerBook attached via WIFI to the same network. I would like to have both devices back up to the shared drive via Time Machine. To date I have been able to get this to work, in a limited fashion. As soon as the iMac goes to sleep the PowerBook cannot see the drive and the backup fails. I would think that since I have selected the power option on the iMac to wake up for network access that this should work. This sounds like a simple requirement, I tryed to attach the USB drive to my Airport Extreme and we all know that that does not work.Â

My brother and I share folders and various file types through ichat at the moment, but it's so slow, we are both on pretty fast networks (35/35MB and 50/8MB) I can mount a folder of his on my mac (we are in seperate towns) by putting our apple ID's into the apple extreme section (I think back to my mac) and we can share files that way, but I am confused as to why the transfer rates are so slow, we get at best 32KBs. Any recommendations for a faster file transfer method between remote macs.
