OS X V10.7 Lion :: Base OS Install For Dev Environment
May 11, 2012
Is it possible to create a base install of Lion with MySQL, Git, Pear, PHP Unit / DBUnit Test and other tools and have it sitting on a server or Time Machine? I am looking to create a dev machine so 3 developers have the same environment and when any other people join we can just order the Mac Mini and install the base system. Not bothered about actual applications, just a base install?

I have an eMac (the 1GHz USB 2.0 educational model) and retail copies of OS 10.3 and 9.1. OS 10.3 is installed, and I would like to install the Classic Mac Environment using my retail copy of OS9, but I can't figure out how to get it to work. The machine won't boot from the OS9 cd, and when I run the installer in Panther, it stops with a message that I need to update OS9, but cannot unless the drive is writable (which it isn't, because it's a cd). Is there a way to get OS9 onto my HDD so that I can actually update it, or do I need to buy another copy of OS9 to get this to work?

I have a MacBook Air and just installed MySQL.I read the doc which I downloaded and should be able to run "mysql" from terminal as descibed below:Suppose that your MySQL programs are installed in /usr/local/mysql/bin and that you want to make it easy to invoke these programs. To do this, set the value of the PATH environment variable to include that directory. For example, if your shell is bash, add the following line to your .bashrc file: PATH=${PATH}:/usr/local/mysql/bin I checked on my terminal with ls -al, but no ~/.bashrc also no ~/.profile files. Echo $SHELL shows me that I am using /bin/bash as shell. When I run export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/mysql/bin then it works and I just have to type "mysql" to get the mysql command line but as soon as I kill my terminal and open a new terminal this setting is lost.

Mac OS X offers a method by which you can "join" an Active Directory server by going through System Preferences --> Users and Groups --> Login Options --> Network Account Server. Is this the same as making a windows pc join a microsoft domain?
If so, is this the preferred method of integrating Apple Macs in a pre-dominantly windows environment.

Because of software compatibility limitations (see Avid Media Composer), I need to find a download of the base Mavericks install, so the first 10.9 install. Avid will only support up to 10.9.2, so I'd like to install 10.9 and then take it up to .2.I can find the 9.2 combo updates, but not the base install.

I just realized something. Isn't it weird how Apple is offering a larger hard drive for the base MacBook and a smaller hard drive for the base MacBook Pro? The MacBook comes with a 250GB HDD and the Pro comes with a 160GB HDD.

With any Unix machine, one can run at the command line:- apachectl -S This will show all virtual servers configured in Apache, and will break if there are any obvious problems in the httpd .conf files. It's very handy for testing a new configuration before restarting the server. With Mac OS X Server though, this doesn't work properly. Sure, I can run that command and see a virtual server or two, but with the introduction of the server Apache wrappers, the command line tools read a very different configuration than the `serveradmin` tool does.
e.g. Wrappers like:-<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER>
....
</IfDefine>
or <IfDefine WEBSERVICE_ON>
[code]....
ps. Running `sudo serveradmin stop web && sudo serveradmin start web` really compared to `apachectl graceful`; it's painfully slow and doesn't provide a way to test a custom configuration before attempting to restart.

I cracked open my base 13 (2GB, 128, 1.83) and must say I'm pretty impressed. But I'm getting the feeling that I'm not going to use it that much. I've already got a 27" iMac and a 32GB iPad. But I'd still like a MBA because they are fantastic machines. I'm thinking I want to swap out my 13 for a base 11 and save the $300.

A few days ago, ClamXav detected infected files when scanning my mail data base. One of wich was a phishing kind of mesage, and the other was defined as a trojan. It turns out that they were mesages from 2009, by the time when i had a G5 Power PC. I've never open theme, nor clicked the links attached. Now i have a new Mac, but those mails are still in the data base; i think they migrated from my imap account. Any way, i red the ClamXav developper's page and he says that its not advisable to trash out or put this kind of files into quarantine. it bothers me that they still remain in my user's library.

Ever since I downloaded iplayer - my mac has been running slow. I have followed a few tips to remove it and all other related files - but it still runs low (spinning wheel of death) and now pdf's dont download correctly (I guess I have deleted too much).
My ideal would be to start from scrach - although I want to keep my itunes and iphotos files as well as my documents. Is there a way to reload back to factory settings then add selected programs and folders from timemachine? I am in the process of timemachine backing up everything now.

-Essentially what im trying to obtain is any and all information that would help me convince a Windows-based IT team that a Mac Server with network home folders is a much better solution for a Mac-based design studio, than trying to create these home folders on a Windows 2003 AD server (which i believe doesn't work).
-I have seen and heard that connecting from a Mac to 2K3 via SMB causes corruption to all sorts of files (not all the time, but some times) -I have read pages and pages of forums listing all sorts of glitches that people using 10.4.X are having with integrating into the AD. -I also believe that "home" folders on the 2K3 box isn't proper Mac "home" folders, but instead is just a sharepoint that isn't capable of taking all the library, prefs folder, etc.
-I need to convince this IT dept that Mac really would be best for the Mac environment, and while i know im right and it would be so much better and work much more reliably, etc, im having trouble digging up really good evidence to hand to them. Anything from Apple's or Microsoft's websites is preferable but at this stage anything will help me out!
Any help is greatly appreciated, my meeting is in about 15 hrs but the info will help me beyond this one particular client.

The computer is an iMac and it has 9.2 on it. It has some programs that are quite old, but that are still used. How do I upgrade it to Tiger so that both OS 9 and OS 10 can be used?
Also, after upgrading, if I install a printer for OS 10, will it also print in the OS 9 environment, or will I have to install the OS 9 drivers for that printer? That's one of the issues that we're having right now, is not being able to print files that in in a very old format.
For example, the Word docs, I tried moving them to a PC to open and print them there, but the files did not even have an extension in the file name. I added ".doc", but it still could not be read by Word 2007. So we need to be able to print the old files, but we're having trouble installing the printer on OS 9.

I recently upgraded an iMac 400 Indigo from OS 9.2 to OS 10.2.8. It wasn't the first time I have done that. This time, however, when I tried to install an older software program, I got a message saying that the classic environment couldn't be found. This never happened before. What can I do to restore the classic environment so I can run older software?

I cannot get the Classic environment to not automatically start when either I restart or turn on my PowerBook.
I've had this problem ever since someone needed to use my computer with a program that was for a prior operating system, once we found out that the only way for it to work on my Mac would be to wipe my current operating system and revert back to the Classic operating system, which of course at that point we stopped with the process.
Ever since then, the 9 is always bouncing in my dock, and when I go into system preferences I cannot uncheck the "Start Classic when you login" option, it is greyed out for some reason.
I've attached a screen shot, I have more of what happens when I login and I can post if it would be helpful

I just brought 2 eMacs from the States to Europe (Spain), thus both machines are not "out of the box" ready to cope with the european 220V.
I've googled searching for answers on and found this post. Apparently, removing a jumper does the trick just fine. My question is which one, because there's two jumpers in that region of the motherboard. See images:
I have taken some images (sorry, with my cellular), I wonder which of the two jumpers has to be removed, the one with two lines (as shown in the picture), or the other one (single cable) in the left-bellow.

I have a primary time capsule, and then I have it extended via another airport extreme. I've noticed that websites are slow to load, but I'm able to sustain pretty fast download speeds. I'm guessing this might be a DNS issue. I've tried google public DNS and I still can't seem to get this thing to fly. A related issue is more of a question. Do I need to change DNS settings on the airport that merely extends the first time capsule? It defaults to 10.0.0.1, the IP address of the router and I'm thinking that's probably what's best as it does the DNS resolution there.

Quite a while back, I had a real problem after installing some software from source that changed a lot of environment variables and stuff. Undoubtably, trying to rectify the situation without enough knowledge just exacerbated the problem.
Anyway, I still have a lot of frustrating problems when working in command line. For example, I just got an error telling me gcc isn't installed. Well that's unlikely, considering how much compiling I tend to do outside command line! However, whereis gcc does nothing.
Basically, I want to just reset all the problems I have caused and just set my paths back to default. I mean everything. Problem is, I dunno what they should be, and I don't know where to start. I know I have to sort my .profile, but even that is a bit taxing.
Which files should I be changing, and what changes should I make

I'm going to be ordering a 2.8 iMac tonight when I get home, and was wondering how the live in a dusty environment? I live on a ranch, in a 100+ year old house with pets. I have had a mbp for about 4yrs now and I just keep some dustoff handy for under the keyboard and such. Wondering if that's the same general concept with the iMac? Also for the monitor is regular glass cleaner fine? I use a microfiber and optical lens spray for the mbp should I use that on the iMac as well or will a paper towel and windex be fine?
