OS X V10.7 Lion :: Capture ASCII Via Bluetooth?
Jul 1, 2012
I want to be able to connect an old Bluetooth device that does not support files or file browsing, just plain upload or download streams (mostly ASCII text). On the PC there is a data capture program which receives the ASCII on a COM port via Bluetooth, but I seem to be stumbling to get this to work in VMWare because it shares the Bluetooth with my iMac, VMWare and Mac OS X both say that it is connected but the device doesn't agree (I have confirmed it does work on a real PC in the same edition of Windows), I am looking for a Mac OS X program to do the ASCII capture instead
The program should be fairly simple - just capture a stream of ASCII data to a text window or file. All that I can find on Mac OS X is file upload or download, but that is not supported by this device.
One thought - could it be that it is the iMac Bluetooth that is not supporting the device? It works fine with a Belkin USB Bluetooth dongle on a PC, but I don't know if that provides the same services as the iMac Bluetooth.
EDIT: Plugging in the Belkin USB Bluetooth dongle to the iMac just chucks everything off Bluetooth, so that's keyboard and mouse / trackpad, which makes the iMac unusable. Unplugging the dongle makes them reconnect. Can't say that I'm particularly impressed by this - why can't Mac OS handle two separate Bluetooth hosts?

I have a list in ascii/text format, where columns are separated by "|"'s. I'd like to read this into Numbers but by default it doesn't know what to do with those "|"'s of course. I've heard (though am unable to verify) that Excel has this ability to recognize separator symbols and put it in separate columns. Is there a way to do this with Numbers or any other Apple program?

Since my latest clean system install a few days ago, Image Capture appears to be corrupted. It is missing some menu items, will save only PNG and TIFF file types from my scanner, and crashes frequently. No other applications are affected (for example, I can still scan to JPEG using any other application). Is there an Image Capture preferences file I can find and delete, or is there a quick way to reinstall the application?

I am trying to figure out how to make a movie or series of screen captures that are timed less frequently than QuickTime Player's Screen Recorder Feature. Basically, I want a screen capture every second or two, so I can go back and see what I did during the day. The Screen Recorder would fill up my hard disc very quickly. When I click on the menu item that is the name of the current application, go down to Services and then click on Service Preferences, I see something called Capture Screen using Timer: I can't figure out how to use it. I created a keyboard shortcut, as you can see, but when I try to use it, nothing happens. Is there any documentation for this service anywhere?

Is there any way to make Image Capture forget a device? It must have a cache since it remebers the folder where I save the photos. I want to make it forget my iPhone (4) because it keeps deleting everything I import regardless if I uncheck the box or not. What's weird is it works fine with all our other iDevices (4S, 3, iPad, all latest iOS) and card readers, so it must be something it remebers about my phone.
It do not see anything like this in the menu. Here is the Image Capture stuff in ~/Library just in case someone can point me to the culprit.

I have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard that I want to share between a PC and MBP via a DVI/USB KVM switch. I think I can do this by plugging a USB Bluetooth dongle into the KVM's USB input.
If I use the MBP's built-in bluetooth then when I switch from one computer to the other via the KVM, the keyboard and mouse will stay paired with the MBP; but if I disable the built-in hardware then the dongle can provide the bluetooth capability and be switched between the computers.

I've shied away from wireless keyboards in the past because I do alot of online baking and investment activities from my computer. I also love a clean workspace and a wireless keyboard could remove yet another wire from my desk. Do you consider wireless and/or bluetooth keyboards safe?

Immediately after the update to 10.7.3 on my MacBook Pro, Bluetooth went crazy. Devices are listed as connected but they don't work. I can't even turn Bluetooth off or on. I use the menu, nothing happens. I safe-booted, then rebooted, and the whole boot process looked crazy. Very very slow, menu bar slow in appearing, portions of it never appeared (the WiFi icon). Blue tooth still not working. So I deleted all devices from the Bluetooth control panel and tried to re-connect, but nothing works.

after updating to 10.7.3. Bluetooth does not work anymore at my system (mid 2011 iMac). Batteries are new in both Apple Magic Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard.
I have installed the combo update, deleted bluetooth.plist file, cleared pram, deinstalled the bt mouse and keyboard, disabled Wifi and bluetooth, rebooted the computer, switch off any other devices in the flat (airport, phones) ...
But the apple bt mouse and the apple bt keybord does not work correctly. The mouse is not moving, or moves very slow and with dropouts. The keyboard is loosing connection quite often and if connected it types double letters with very slow response.

The bluetooth audio only gets connected when the music starts to play (I think it makes sense). But it gets disconnected just after the music stops (maybe when I'm changing the song I want to hear) and it's annoying. Worst, most of the times when it connects back, the sound only lasts one second and then it get silent. ITunes shows that the song is being played, but nothing sounds.

Hey guys..>I'm trying to set up my jabra bt200 bluetooth headset to work with my mac (osx 10.4.2, 15" powerbook 1.67ghz)...and I can get it to pair, but it won't stay connected for more than a split second. this is a problem i've seen a few people have, looking around on various forums and stuff, and i was trying various solutions when i decided to try doing a firmware upgrade on the internal bluetooth module. I downloaded the firmware updater (1.2), tried to run it and it came up with the following error:
"This computer does not have an Apple Bluetooth module installed. It cannot be updated by this application."
Why would my Powerbook not have an Apple Bluetooth module?!?!?! It's got bluetooth installed, it's internal, but looking at the system profile, it says it's the manufacturer is Cambridge Silicon Radio. So is this normal or what? Is the firmware upgrade even going to help me out in the end? Just to clarify...the powerbook came with bt installed factory...it's not something added by me!

I've had problems related to both WiFi and Bluetooth ever since going Lion. However, after updating to 10.7.3 (the large update) from 10.7.2 the WiFi always drops whenever I switch my Bluetooth audio on. It resumes after disabling the bluetooth audio. Please note that Bluetooth is always on in both cases, I just switch the audio output. Tried resetting SMC and PRAM - didn't work
