Mac OS X Lion Server :: Cannot Login To Domain After 10.7.4 Update

May 16, 2012

Here again dealing with how OS X deals with .local domains I think. Was previously bound and all was working fine.Have just updated to 10.7.4 When trying to login using the "Other User" the button stays red and says Network accounts unavailable.I can ping domain server by name and IP.Permissions have been rebuilt.

Have rebound. Had a problem at first unbinding inside the Open Directory Utility as it said it could not connect with the domain and an unused account would be left if a forced unbind was done. Tried again by using the minus button instead of the Unbind button and it worked without any message.

So then binded to the domain and all looked good. Green button next to Network Account Server in the Users and Groups.

OS X :: Matching User Account And Domain Name

Nov 20, 2009

I created my account username om my Mac ( OSX 10.6.2 ) long before I created my website. If we take it that my user account name happens to be 'myname' and my website happens to be [URL]. I hadn't noticed it was a problem until the other day. I changed the site base ref to work from [URL] away from {URL]. The problem is on my Mac, the address [URL] is referring to the local web server, ie pre installed Apache and library/webserver/documents not the actual web address. If Web server is switched off via the sharing control panels - the address returns a google not found page? which seems very odd.

It will also do this from any user account - identical results, so I know the Mac has reserved the name in some way. I don't want to rename my user account. I cant see my own website on my Mac which is very frustrating, as my website root is forcing all traffic to [URL] ( which is what I want of course ) and not [URL]. I have to use Parallels with a version of Windows to see the site properly.

OS X :: Migrating Mobile User Accounts From One Domain To Another

May 7, 2010

I'm looking after some Macs that are migrating over to a new domain. The users are out of the office a lot, so they use mobile accounts on Macbook Pros using the most recent version of Snow Leopard. A lot of their configuration is specific to their mobile user accounts and I obviously can't log into the new domain using a mobile account from the old domain (I tested). So I found this: [URL] It outlines what I need to do in order to delete the local cached account without deleting the home directory. It also outlines how to give the same user account on the new domain access to the same home directory on the Macbook that they were using before.

- Unbound from old domain
- Bound to new domain
- Logged on as root and opened terminal and ran the below commands:
dscl . list /users (to find the user account)
dscl . -delete /users/USERNAME (this deleted the locally cached account)
chown -R USERNAME:NewDomainName.localOUThatUserIsIn /users/USERNAME

When I run the last command, I get the following chown: NewDomainName.localOUThatUserIsIn: Invalid argument (it doesn't display the after local) I verified that I was using the correct OU. I added NewDomainName.local to the DNS tab in Network settings under the domains to search in.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Lost The Entire Library Folder From User Directory After Update?

Feb 4, 2012

With the update to OS-X 10.7.3 did anyone lose the entire Library folder from their user directory? I didn't notice until I started working on the installation of an application (beta version) and found the my entire ~/Library/ folder gone, all 57+ GBytes of it. I'm restoring it from Time Machine two days ago, but I wonder what happened with the update to completely remove it.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Machine Name Without Domain Name?

Jun 23, 2012

I've just set up DNS on Lion Server and whereas previously I could connect to a system on my network by the hostname (e.g. via ssh), using the Lion Server DNS requires the fully-qualified name. Is this by design? I've checked all my settings and it all seems to be correct.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: What Benefits Are There To Joining A Windows Domain

Mar 9, 2012

My company has one mac user with a Macbook Air, we have a Windows 2008 r2 domain.I'm wondering if it is worth joining him to the domain, what benefits are there for a mac user? We use Exchange 2007 and change our passwords every 90 days. One concern is when the user is out of the office the cached password can become out of sync with the domain password.

I have not set up ssl before so i have a very basic question. I would like to support my Mac Lion server based email with a basic SSL cert that was provided with my domain name.

When setting up the certificate would i set the dNSName to  domainname.com or to server.domainname.com

My mail server host name is set to server.domainname.com so i would assume this is the correct one, but emails are addressed to name@domainname.com so

I want to be sure i am setting this correctly before i generate the csr

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Create A DNS Record For A Domain Itself (without A Hostname)

Mar 10, 2012

Normally, you can create a DNS record that points to the zone itself, e.g.:

@   10800 IN A    196.197.200.201

How do you accomplish that on a Mac OSX Lion Server? The DNS requires you to enter a hostname and it does not accept "@" as the hostname as it normally appears in the zone file. (manually modifying the host file does not work - I tried that ;-) )

OS X V10.7 Lion :: DNS Is Incredibly Slow On 10.7.4 When Connected To A .local Domain

May 21, 2012

Im running Lion 10.7.4 and am connected to a .local domain.

I am also running VMWare Fusion on the same machine with Windows 7.  neither Lion or Windows 7 are joined to the domain. The windows 7 VM browses the internet perfectly but lion is painfully slow. My IP's are DHCP assigned and the search domain is xxxx.local

The VM is using bridged not NAT which is why the VM is perfming perfectly. I know its something to do with the .local but cant change the TLD here so need a fix.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Finding The Scripting References For Web Domain Creation?

Feb 14, 2012

I have been unable to find any references on how to best automate certain "tasks" in Lion so that I can do the following:

create predefined DNS names based upon the clients domain name
create predefnined web address based upon the just created DNS

For example.... We have the customer "Sammy's Flower Garden" and his domain is "sammysflowergarden.com". At the command line, I would type:

$ clientsetup sammysflowergarden.com This would then create a base folder structure (this part has already been written)ClientDomains     -     S          -     sammysflowergarden.com               -     production               -     staging               -     archive               -     design                    -     template

[code]....

From what I have read, alot of modifications outside of the Lion serveradmin tooling can result in some rather unusual if not nasty behaviour. If this is true, then I would assume that I could not just write out to a file in /var/named/ and have it automaticly picked up by the server? The same for the apache instance? I still want to be able to use the GUI interface when needed.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Computer Id In File Sharing Is The Old One Before Joined Windows Domain?

May 24, 2012

I just installed Lion 10.7.4 named my computer "fx6800". Then I joined my Windows 2003 Server domain with no problems. After that I could not log on to domain with one of my windows 7 machines because it had the same computer ID. Ok no problem I re joined the domain and re binded with the Win 7 machine and then un binded my Mac Lion machine then re-binded with a different computer ID. No problem both machines can log on to AD with separate computer accounts. Then I notice when I opened terminal it was showing the old computer ID. No problem I fixed it With sudo scutil --set HostName "new host name".

Then when I go to select file sharing in the description to the right under File Sharing On: it shows the path to tha machine is fx6800.domainname.local which is the original computer ID. Also when I select remote login and I believe it shows username@fx6800.domainname.local. I have searched for 2 days and have not come up with anything. I am sure if I reinstall everything it should fix it but I would like to save the time.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Cannot Edit Website Details - Domain Name Field Blank

Mar 23, 2012

I'm trying to setup a Lion Server as an internet server - not as a web server - I need access to a different port. When I use the Server UI to go to Web, I can select to edit my domain name but then in the edit window, the Domain Name field is blank, and I can't change anything such as the port, SSL Cert, etc.As best I can tell, I have the DNS setup but I'm not sure I've done it correctly. I can add a second domain name and can edit the details for that. I'd hoped I could delete the first one or swap them but no luck.I can't access the domain name from outside the LAN but it may have just not propagated yet. I can access the IP address and do see the default home page.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Routing  Profile Manager/iCal  Published Into .private Domain?

i've setted up my mini server as "server.domain.private"because i don't want it to be published on the internet by default, i want to have control on wich webapp is published.my main goal is to have a new Vhosts wich is serving only the webapps i need to be running and ,why not, hosting multiple VhostS enabling just some (or one) webapps each [url]). in other words: i want control on what is published where and how in order to publish Profile Manager i did: - created a new virtual host on the web service called "server.public-domain.com"- enabled the webapp on that Vhost from terminal as found in: [url]  using this command "webappctl start [url]"- restarted the whole server but this seems not to work as expected.. should it ??? after some dirty work on the apache config (copy/paste from the original vHost of some "proxypass" and "balancemembers" and "include" regarding devicemngmt) i got it to ask me for password when browsed from the outside world, BUT after login it will redirect my browser to "server.domain.private" wich is obviously not working from outside.

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Access Any User Account After Update

Mar 15, 2012

Two days ago I updated my Macbook Pro to the latest version using the "Software Update" utility. It restarted and I just shut it down.Yesterday I attempted to log to my account and I realized that it's not possible. No matter the account I try it:

1. Asks for a password (Enter password correctly).

2. A gray screen appears for one or two seconds as if it's loading the session.

3. It comes back to the accounts screen.

After many tries then I entered to the Recovery utilities ( Command + R on boot). I analized the disk and it's fine, no errors on it. So I decided to reinstall OS X When I try to re-install it starts to download some components and after few minutes of download it states that it cannot download these components. I thought it was a problem with my wireless network so I plugged an ethernet cable to the mac but the same error still happens after one minute or two.

Note: I checked my network with other devices and it's working fine.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Software Update Can't Connect To The Update Server

Mar 24, 2012

"Software Update can't connect to the Update Server" - so I can't even check to see if updates are available. This has been going on for sometime. For a while if I created a new admin account and used that it would work, but not today.Tried creating a new admin account but to no avail.

I clcik on the Apple Icon, (top left hand side of screen), click on SOFTWARE UPDATE, it runs for a split second, then: [URL]after which I check my internet connect to see that it's fine. (And I attempt to run SU with nothing else using the internet). [URL] I've checked the forum and found a few people with the same problem. I've tried deleting PLISTs and using 008.008.008.008 DNS address, [URL], but still cannot get it to work. I still have my old G4 Power running OS 10.5.8 connected to the same modem (Netcomm NB6PLus4w Modem which has 4 ports) as my Mac Mini, and it runs Software Update without any issues. So it's not my internet connection and it's not the Apple server, so it's something about the Mac Mini that's not right.
