OS X V10.7 Lion :: TextEdit Saving Without Asking?
Jun 4, 2012
My computer is set up with a network drive that does not allow for the new feature "versions" to function properly. I guess at some point a window popped up and asked if I wanted to save anyway and I clicked the "do not show message again" and cancel. Well it has remembered my choice to not show this message again but now it just permanently overwrites and saves text files when I close them without even hesitating. So 10 minutes ago I had a very important file open and accidentally modified it, I was done with the file but did not want to save it so instead of undoing I just closed the file. This new system has completely overwritten the file with this new version and when I reopen it there are no undo options or previous versions available to restore. How do I turn this stupid feature off?

Just switched to Lion, and was alarmed to notice existing (previously saved) TextEdit files closing without an option to save or not save changes. How can I open a TextEdit file, edit it, and then close it without saving the changes? (I often like to print a document without the photo that may be in it, so I delete the photo, print, and then close without saving, because I didn't want the photo permanently removed from the document.)

I'm running OS 10.6.8, TextEdit v 1.6 (264) and find that documents created in TextEdit and saved with a custom scale (90% for example) and then closed always revert to 100% when opened the next time. The funny thing is when I close the document after changing the scale without saving it prompts me to save the changes, but even then it's not saved. So I'm thinking this behavior isn't normal, TextEdit knows it's supposed to be saving this but for whatever reason it's not. This is more in the category of a nuisance than a problem but I thought I'd post and see if anyone knows anything about this.

Even though my permissions are set to read write, I can't save changes to a TextEdit file. The program keeps saying I don't have permission and asks me if I want to create a duplicate. How can I fix this?

It looks like some icons names cannot be changed in OS X Lion via the Resources technique? I used to use the tips from this thread in Leopard and Snow Leopard but now the game seems to be up:
[url]..
I would, normally, replace the app with a copy of itself to overwrite the name but Lion won't let me delete the original because the OS needs it and like I said, the Resource lproj trick doesn't seem to work.
Is there a way to change the name of the Trash or TextEdit app?

It's driving me crazy that I can no longer "save as" to change the format and location of a text file in Textedit.
I don't want to duplicate my file and rename it to solve the issue. Developers take note. This *****.

I just lost a whole hours worth of research. I was typing in text edit and then it started making me duplicate the file at every save and then I had to replace the orginal, and I did this several times until I finally decided to close it down (as it's done this before) and when I opened it up again a whole hours worth of research was missing. I clicked on the Restore button but it hadn't saved any of my research for over an hour.
Is there another way to get that restored?

Pre-Lion the way to see the path of the file you are currently looking at (in any app, but for simplicity let's say TextEdit), was to select Save As... and it would default to the directory the file is open in. At least that's the way I did it...
So now in Lion (which I generally like) how do you see what directory your current file is located in??

I do a lot of editing of text docs and every time I open TextEdit it opens a new doc when I want to just open the doc I'm after. Then I have to close both of them. This gets annoying when editing several docs. Is there any way to turn off the new doc? I don't see that option in the menu or preferences.

Having upgraded to Lion 10.7.3, the TextEdit 1.7 (289.3) application does not display any fonts placed in Users area: Mac HD/Users/Library/Fonts. But the same fonts are OK when placed at Public area: Mac HD/Library/Fonts. Tried Repairing Permission via Disk Utility with no joy. Although fonts placed at Users area don't display in TextEdit, they do display in Quark XPress, FileMaker, OpenOffice, Illustrator etc, etc.

I finally upgraded to 10.7.4 this morning, and promptly opened TextEdit to write a new note to myself. When I tried to save it- cmd+S - the "File" in the menu bar was selected for ~10 seconds, as though it were saving, and then it was done. I never got the dialog to actually name the file, choose where to save it, etc. (Keep in mind that I'd just opened a new blank file, so I was kind of expecting this dialog.) Then it got weirder. I tried to close the window- cmd+W - and the x in the upper-left corner of the window was selected, as though it were trying to close, for ~10 seconds. Then it gave up and the window was still there. Needless to say I gave up, force-quit TextEdit and wrote the note in emacs. Should've done that all along...
Then, just now, I had the same thing happen to me in Preview. Can't save files, or close windows. Tried duplicating a jpg to save as a copy somewhere else, and never got a save dialog, and couldn't close either the copy or the original.

(I'm taking a punt as to this being the correct forum in the absence of any other guidance!) For some unknown reason I no longer seem to be able to save any pdf pages from the web as web archives on to my desktop - or anywhere else for that matter. I try File/Save as. but all I get is a pop-up which states "The document “title of page.pdf” could not be exported as “title of page.pdf". I have never experienced this before now and am sure I have successfully saved such pdfs since I upgraded to Lion.

I am getting "downloaded from the internet" alerts on files I have created myself, and were never downloaded. Example: create a new file with TextEdit, put some text in it, save it as Test.tst, and close it.
If I re-open it, I get the warning: "This may be an application. It was downloaded from the internet etc.". But it is not executable, it is just a flat text file, and it was definitely not downloaded from the internet. If I give it the extension .txt instead of .tst this does not happen, but I want to work with non-standard extensions sometimes. Strangely, if I give it no extension at all, the problem also does not occur. So the system distrusts ".tst", but anything without extension is OK? Looks like a bug or misdesigned feature to me.
The most annoying thing is that if I make changes to such a file I get the same warning again, and this continues forever. When I type "ls -ld@ Test.tst" I see: com.apple.quarantine23 This is supposedly the reason for the message. I know I can change that for each file separately or turn off quarantine completely, but that is not what I want.Is there a way to switch of quarantine just for certain file extensions?

ok, so I have a server that is hosting my email addresses, i have setup imap to use on all 3 of my devices.
My macbook pro, my ipad 2 and my iphone 4s. On my ipad, I go into the account to look for sent messages, and I have 3 sent message folders under the inbox,. sent. sent messages and sent with a paper airplane.
Now I am trying to get everything to sync together, so that when I write an email on any device, it is saved in the sent mail folder, and I can see it on any device I choose. Currently I am sending email on my ipad and it is not saving in the folders, any of them.
in the sent message folder, i am seeing messages sent from me from last friday, although i have sent messages already from this account.
in my second account though, the heirachy is different when i go into the account under the inbox i have 1 folder sent messages, then i have the sent messages with the paper airplane next to it.
when i go into the sent messages folder i see that a message that i wrote on my macbook pro this morning, is saved in this sent messages folder, as it other things i have sent through my mackbook pro in the sent messages with the paper airplane i have stuff only sent from friday and before.

I have seen this asked numerous times over the last six years, but no satisfactory answers. When I open graphic files with preview (regardless of type), I want to crop them, then "Save as".I want Preview to default to .jpg format AND Best quality. Can I set these attributes? Please don't suggest "sliding the quality bar..." as I've seen many do. That's not what I want to do - I'm asking about DEFAULTS.

I have a secondary user account who's preferences will not save. I have tried making it an administrator, but that hasn't seemed to help. The dock changes oringinally weren't saving, and I deleted the plist file, but that was a one time fix. I made changes once, and it only saved them once. Also, I have an application (Steam) that has been set to open when the user signs on. I have tried removing this program both through its own preferences panel, and also through the Start-Up items menu in the user preferences on the computer, and neither one is working.

Last night I accidently deleted some files off my desktop. I went into Time Machine to restore them and thought I had made the correct selection but instead it appears that I changed ALL the backups to the current state of my desktop. I've checked other folders on my hard drive and they all seem to be identical throughout the dates in Time Machine instead of each being unique as well. Is my Time Machine stuck and not saving properly or was it something I possibly did? Is there a way to undo that or am I now stuck?

I have a problem when saving a pdf using preview.
I create a document using Xelatex and the document works fine just after it is created, i.e. it looks good, it can be searched, etc. The problem comes when I save the document using preview. For example if I add a note, or highlight something and save the document, it automatically losses all text information.
It can still be opened and looks good, but it cannot be searched any more. In addition, if I try to copy a part of the text all I get are some strange characters that look like a small square with a face on it.
If I do the same procedure (i.e. open, highlight some text, and save) using pdf acrobat reader, the file is still readable both in acrobat and preview. It has to be fonts related, since it only happens when I use xelatex or latex with some specific fonts, but not with all of them.
