OS X V10.7 Lion :: Is Time Machine Stuck And Not Saving Properly

Mar 6, 2012

Last night I accidently deleted some files off my desktop. I went into Time Machine to restore them and thought I had made the correct selection but instead it appears that I changed ALL the backups to the current state of my desktop. I've checked other folders on my hard drive and they all seem to be identical throughout the dates in Time Machine instead of each being unique as well. Is my Time Machine stuck and not saving properly or was it something I possibly did? Is there a way to undo that or am I now stuck?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Is Not Working Properly?

Mar 24, 2012

Time Machine can not find a file that I deleted just a few days ago, which is very annoying, because I can find the file just fine when I open my external hard drive (my Time Machine backup drive) with the Finder and navigate to the exact date and location where the file was located when I deleted it.

Why is Time machine not working like it is supposed to?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Error Message Since It Upgrade - The Disk Was Not Ejected Properly

Feb 4, 2012

Since upgrading to Lion, I have been having problems backing up to Time Machine using a LaCie external disk. Time Machine worked fine before the upgrade to Lion. The backup usually starts correctly, but after backing up around 1GB, I get the following error message: "The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging or turning it off". The disk has over 80GB of space available.

OS X :: Backup Data Using Time Machine / Saving Old Backups?

Oct 7, 2010

So I just successfully migrated all of my data and settings from my old iMac to my new 27 inch iMac using the Time machine backup on my Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive. Aside from the Time machine backup folder I also dragged a few other things over to the external hard drive because there was so much extra space on it. The drive is not partitioned.

So I'd like to start using Time machine with this new 27 inch iMac but the empty space that's left on the external hard drive is barely large enough to cover what I now have on the internal hard drive on my new 27 inch iMac. If I were to remove the Time machine backup from my old iMac there would be plenty of space again unless starting Time Machine on this new 27 inch iMac will just copy right over that backup file? Everything on this new iMac, the data and settings and so forth, is exactly the same. So is the user account. However the previous Mac was running Leopard while this new iMac is running Snow Leopard.

So if it doesn't copy over the old backup it will just create a new backup file? And if it does create a new backup file is there any point to keeping the old backup file since I no longer have the old iMac and wouldn't be able to access it again? Obviously if I didn't have to keep it I could erase it which would create plenty of extra space for me to start using Time machine again but with this new iMac.

IMac (Intel) :: Time Machine Not Saving Any Data?

Nov 30, 2014

I just installed a new SSD. Time Machine is active. It says it is saving data. When you open TM, it opens the times that it saved data except there is noting in the boxes and the button to choose a backup to restore is greyed out, not allowing to choose anything as there isn't anything to choose. The TM says that it has backed upped 350 gb of data. There is nothing there however. I rebooted, disconnected external drive, even reformatted and started over. Nothing seems to work.

OS X :: Time Machine Not Backing Up Properly

Dec 6, 2008

Time machine won't back up immediately when I plug in my drive, even if it's been a few days since it backed up last. It starts on its own eventually, but sometimes (like today) it waits almost a half-hour, even though it hasn't been backed up since December 3rd.

Software :: Time Machine Not Backing Up Properly

Sep 11, 2010

During the last month the following has happened:

1. TM started a backup but was still not finished after 40 minutes, when I put the computer to sleep and went to bed. (I can't now remember what the state was the next day). Why so much longer than before? I had not created or amended huge files (like video).

2. Yesterday: rotating arrow icon on main menu bar continuously rotating for about 25 minutes. No movement of the progress bar nor any TM disk (external firewire) activity. I restarted the machine and TM did not resume backing up. I did a manual backup which lasted a few minutes only. OK. I went to bed.

3. Then today, on waking, it did its first auto backup of the day (either immediately or a few minutes later), taking about 10 minutes which seems a long time since there was virtually no computer activity since the last backup.

When I enter time machine all I see is the desktop of the date of installation and the current date, with nothing in between, and yet when I switch on my hard drive, time machine activates.

I do not leave on my external hard drive [iomega] as it tends to get very warm.

What if anything am I doing wrong.

OS X :: Snow Leopard And Time Machine - Progress Counter Not Working Properly

Oct 3, 2009

I've searched the web and the forums but I do not find anything that matches my problem, here it is. I'm using 1 Time machine drive (WD My Passport Studio 500 GB FW 800 for Mac) for my two machines, MacBook Pro (June 09, upgraded from Leopard with Snow Leopard Up to date disc) and my MacBook white (Late 2007, upgraded from Leopard with Snow Leopard retail disc). On my MacBook white, when I plug in the TM drive via USB, and when I click on the TM icon in the menubar, it says "Calculating changes (or similar)... (1, 2, 3, and so on %) until 100 % and the backup works just fine. But when I plug my TM drive onto my MacBook Pro (via FW), it says "Calculating changes... 1%" and it remains stuck on those 1%, but then after a while starts the backup properly.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Exhibiting Several Odd Behaviors, Not Working Properly?

May 16, 2012

I recently had my HDD replaced after a failure, and reinstalled 10.6.8 using Carbon Copy Cloner. The new drive came from Apple, and had 10.5.8 pre-installed (the OS that my late 2008 MBP came with), but CCC did what seemed to me to be an excellent job restoring. The clone was right at about two weeks prior to the old HDD failure, so once I cloned over, I only had to sync up with Dropbox, and manually move a handful of files (really from just a couple of folders for work) for things to be just as they were leading up to the failure. Here's what's happened (roughly) over the past week with TM:

1. Slow backups. Slow as in 1-2 KB/minute. This all starts with TM "calculating changes" which means about 20 minutes of crawling through and re-indexing(?) directories to look for changes. This happens each time.

2. Backups come in successive pairs. Time Machine Buddy shows this. One backup ends, having copied ~277,000 files (not a typo), then a second one begins immediately after, copies ~255,000 files (also not a typo), then either thins and/or deletes expired files.

3. #2 happens over the course of 2 1/2 hours, reliably.

4. After #2, the next backup comes about 2 hours later, starting all over again. Mere KB take the full 2 1/2 hours.

5. After each of the last backups, I have MORE space reported as available on the external drive. It seems to randomly delete backups from roughly 1 month ago.

Here's what I have tried:

1. Delete the TM prefs file in my user folder (not /)

2. Repaired the disk - things were very screwed up, with links needing repair all over the place. Thought this would solve things, but it didn't.

3. Hid the external from Spotlight's indexing

4. Deleted backups (via the TM interface -> "delete backups" option, NOT manually) after disk repair, in the event/hopes that initial backups following the new HDD replacement were bad.

5. Repaired permissions, etc.

6. Console doesn't throw what appear to be any errors. Just shows the successive backups mentioned above, the hundreds of thousands of files copied, and that TM deleted something each time.

OS X :: Time Machine - Stuck On Calculating Changes?

Oct 13, 2009

I've finally gotten Snow Leopard on my Mac Book Pro, after jumping through hoops to get there - Disc not GUID, then when it was, SL not believing that the disc was bootable.

Due to this, I nuked the hard drive, installed SL and then restored all settings and apps from my latest time machine back up, whilst physically cabled to my Airport Extreme Base Station. Whilst I left it do that, it finished the restore, and also did a couple of hourly back ups. All hunky dorey so far.

Now that I'm using wireless, I notice that Time Machine kicks in as normal to do a back up. The icon starts whizzing round, and it starts calculating the changes to back up. But that's it. It progresses up to 99%, and then just sits there. I've left it like that for several hours, to see if it's actually going to complete, but nothing happens.

Is there something I can look at to see if I can prod it into action?

My backups go to a Drobo hanging off a Power Mac G4 on FW800, physically networked to the AEBS.

OS X :: Time Machine Randomly Gets Stuck On Backups?

Nov 1, 2007

I set up Time Machine the yesterday, it completed it's initial backup fine, and performed about 10 or so hourly backups, then randomly on one of it's hourly backups it got stuck. It never actually started the backup. The preferences said it was backing up, but the progress bar wasn't moving, and there was no activity on the drive. I stopped the "backup", and from then on I could not get it to do another backup.

So last night I reformatted the external and decided to let TM start over. Once again it finished the initial backup fine, and I went to bed. While I was in bed it finished 3 more hourly backups, and I woke up this morning to find it stuck again, trying to do it's 2:05AM backup. The computer was awake all night, so it should have no problems. The preferences say it is backing up, but never makes any progress, and there is no drive activity.

Here is the relavent errors from my System log:

Nov 1 02:10:46 todd-sullivans-imac /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[304]: MDBackupBegin() returned result (906) > 0, waiting

I bolded the entries that I assume are the problem, but I don't know what it could be. Why does it randomly get stuck on hourly backups. BTW The "waiting" is just repeating over and over etc. Tried it a 3rd time, and this time it managed to do 25 hourly backups before getting stuck. does anyone have a clue here, I'd like to get this working. Every time it stops working I have to format the drive and start over to get it to backup again.

OS X :: Time Machine Stuck In Loop Running SL?

Aug 29, 2009

I installed SL a few days ago and had to rebuild my Time Machine backup. It powered through all 700GB today and then it kept going. The progress bar got to the max: 700/700, then went to 700.02/700.02 ,, 700.03/700.03 ,, 700.04/ 700.04 ,, etc. Currently it's adding onto the "inprogress" file and filling up the drive with more data than I had to backup! It's done 844GB out of 700. Keep in mind, this is a totally-from scratch backup here! Do I stop it? Do I wait until it fills up the drive and "figures it out" ?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Can't Complete Backup To Time Capsule

Jun 19, 2014

MacBook Pro mid-2012, 8GB RAM, 750GB hard drive, Mac OS X 10.8.5

One Time Capsule at home

One Time Capsule in vacation home

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.

During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).

It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?

Intel Mac :: Time Machine Backups Taking Extremely Long Time Running Lion 10.7.4

Jul 2, 2012

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?
