Mac OS X Lion Server :: Host Name Is Invalid

May 24, 2012

I have gone through the setup of my newly installed lion server software.  I setup a server.example.private host name and have turned on file sharing, and VPN.  I bought the server software so I can access my host computer from my IPad and a windows based laptop.  When I attempt to setup the profile manager I get to the screen in the directory admin setup that asks for the host name and password, etc.  The name and host name are already populated with a generic names and the password fields are blank.  Whether I leave the generic fields blank and try and enter a new password or change the generic fields and password to something new I get the same error message every time.  It says "Computers host name is invalid. The host name does not resolve to any configured address on this comp. ensure the host name is correct.  How do I find out what the correct host name is for my computer?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Computer Local Host Name Already In Use On Network

May 10, 2012

After I upgraded to 10.7.4 I receive popup windows informing that: This computer's local hostname "ComputerName" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "ComputerName-1.local" every time my Mac wakes up. The number at the end of computer name increases every time I wake my Mac Pro up.

- Disk permissions repair brings no errors.
- After Mac restart - the same result
- As before I use both LAN and WiFi connections with LAN in higher priority.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Make MBA To Rejoin Wireless Host After Waking Up

Apr 11, 2012

When I turn away from my MacBook Air to do something and turn back, I find the machine in standby mode (blank screen). I press the power button to restore access, provide the login password to re-join my "sleeping" session. I'm then presented with a "list" of one Wireless host which I must select, then "join" before I can proceed to use my browser etc.

Is there a way, that I can eliminate the tedious task of specifying from a list of one then explicitly "joining" the network? I'd think there would be an option to "always join this network if available" option that would make life easier, but I have not a clue as to where I would set that. I'm admittedly new to the Mac OS (10.7.2) and the Mac experience in general.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: WD Smartware Is Mounting Unknown Disks

Apr 26, 2012

I have a WD Passport. It used to do this annoying thing, where in addition to the actual drive, it would load a virtual vcd drive containing the smartware software too. (This was common to a lot of WD products). To get rid of this, I installed the WD Software on my mac, and changed the settings to that it no longer displayes the VCD. This made the VCD dissappear, but now it shows a new drive called "Boot OS X" , everytime I plug my WD drive in!

I don't know what this drive is! And now I have the same equivalent problem to that stupid vcd drive popping up! When I plug my WD drive in, all I want to see is only one icon for the WD drive. Right now I have "Boot OS X" , and "Keanu's Time Machine". I only want "Keanu's Time Machine" to pop up when I plug in the drive.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Thousands Of Unknown Entries In Address Book

Mar 1, 2012

I am having this BIG problem with address book in Lion. There are hundred of thousands of unknown entries in my address book. More than twice I have deleted all of them they come back again. My MacPro is hard to use when it happens, I can hear the sound of the hard drive working and if I open the address book app then it slows down the MacPro. I was thinking about uninstalling the address book app and the reinstalling it but I do not know of to do that or where to use the info in order to do that. I would like to be able to keep my good entries, but what can I do!

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Window Shows Sharing With Unknown Computers?

May 15, 2012

My finder windows seem to show that I'm "sharing" with other computers. I have file sharing turned off in System Preferences. On the left side of the finder window it shows "Favorites" and under that "Shared" pops up with what I assume are other computers nearby. These are not names of other computers in my house. These computer names pop up and come and go. They are the same two names. Underneath the "shared" names, my external drives show up under "Devices". My cable modem is connected to an Apple Airport Extreme router. Any ideas on why this "sharing" is showing up?Is my data secure?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Can't Open / Delete File With Unknown Permissions

Jun 4, 2014

I was using Logic Pro X and the program crashed before I could save my project. There is now a file called "untitled" that appears to be a Logic Project file, however I cannot delete, open, rename, and move it anywhere.  When I try to click and drag the file icon, it doesn't allow me to move it anywhere.
When right-click on the file, it pops up the window, but there are only a few options available.  I went to "get info" and saw that the file permissions are "unknown".  I've tried repairing disk permissions in the disk utility, however the file is still unaccessible. It's not a large file (only 578K), but it would still like to remove it.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Email Address Requires Host Name In Address Field

May 5, 2012

I'm trying to setup mail on Lion Sever (7.3). The only way I can get it to accept incoming mail is to specify the whole FQDN of the server in the address. For example the domain name is example.com and I have a user set up called john. Sending mail to john@server.example.com works.

But sending mail to john@example.com (which is what I want) returns an error:
554 554 5.7.1 <john@example.com>: Relay access denied (state 13).

For internal DNS, I have:
example.com - primary zonemail.expample.com - alias server.example.comserver.example.com - 192.168.1.2 [URL] - alias server.example.com MX record [URL]

I see references here to problems in mail on 7.3 but not this specific problem.

Applications :: Unable To Use Terminal / Terminal Stucks At Blank Login Window

Oct 20, 2009

Anybody see this before? I opened up Terminal.app and the window is completely blank. There is nothing in it whatsoever. Looks as if bash never started. The title bar simply says "Terminal — login — 80x24". I can type whatever I want in the Terminal window like it's a text document and nothing happens. If I restart the computer, this seems to fix the problem, but it seems to only be a temporary fix as the issue happens again soon after.

OS X Server :: Processes Started In Terminal End When Terminal Closed?

Jan 29, 2008

I'm running Symantec Backup Agent on our mac osx server. I start the agent in the terminal (./agent.be). It returns a notification that it started the service, however, it doesn't return to the prompt. Closing the terminal gives a warning that the process will be closed if the terminal is closed. Closing it does kill the process. Ctrl+c to return to the prompt also kills the process. So it's as if once the process is started in the terminal, nothing can be altered.

I am not much of a mac guy so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Anyone have any advice on how to handle this so the process is ALWAYS running?

OS X :: Unable To Install Terminal App - Run Terminal As Admin?

Aug 19, 2010

I'm on a standard user account and I would really like to install icalbuddy which is a terminal app. When I install apps normally I simply have to provide a admin name and pw, but this doesn't work when it is a terminal app because it requires that the 'su' command be run.

So I thought that I could run terminal as admin through 'su - admin' and then install. But of course the admin account doesn't have access to the user folder where the installer is located. I just can't win.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Is There A Chance Of Mistake With Terminal And Flashback?

Apr 9, 2012

And so the Flashback saga continues. About a couple of days before the Java patch hit I encountered the now dreaded Software Update login screen. I did not enter my password, hit cancel, popped back up and hit cancel again. So here is the issue, at the time this happened I had iAntivirus installed which is one of the application this malware looks for when installing orginially according to F-Secure. (apparently it doesn't work on Lion which might be the issue). Since I hit cancel it would have still tried to continue with the second variation but I also have Office 2011 (also one of the applications this looks for before self deleting according to F-Secure).

I panicked when popular news broke about this and following the terminal commands provided by F-secure discovered that for all 3 commands, there was nothing that existed and became relieved and updated Java with the new update...until I proceeded to download ClamXav (app store free version) as a future precautionary measure. This is when I ran a scan and discover 2 OSX Flashback-8 infections. One .null and one .rserv. Both of which I promptly removed, which sent them to the trash. When I attempted emptying the trash neither could be permanently deleted bc both were "in use".

How do I still have the trojan, virus, malware or whatever you want to call it if terminal found nothing but ClamXav did? Is this just a variation that hasn't really been encountered before?

I should also note that in my Library I have both null. plist and com. adobe. reader. plist that had been recently modified in the last couple of weeks (these were mentioned in several articles as potential launcher files.

Any thoughts or should I just completely restore my Macbook Pro?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can Stop TM's Snapshots Without A Terminal Command

There is a possibility that there is something amiss with my external hard drive.  I have ejected the hard drive and read in a thread that there is a way to disable TM's continuous "local Snapshots" Backup with a command typed in Terminal.  The reasoning is that TM uses a lot of CPU's? and things can become a bit sluggish. If I turn TM to "OFF", doesn't this stop the hourly snapshots on the INTERNAL hard drive?
