OS X V10.7 Lion :: Is There A Chance Of Mistake With Terminal And Flashback?
Apr 9, 2012
And so the Flashback saga continues. About a couple of days before the Java patch hit I encountered the now dreaded Software Update login screen. I did not enter my password, hit cancel, popped back up and hit cancel again. So here is the issue, at the time this happened I had iAntivirus installed which is one of the application this malware looks for when installing orginially according to F-Secure. (apparently it doesn't work on Lion which might be the issue). Since I hit cancel it would have still tried to continue with the second variation but I also have Office 2011 (also one of the applications this looks for before self deleting according to F-Secure).Â
I panicked when popular news broke about this and following the terminal commands provided by F-secure discovered that for all 3 commands, there was nothing that existed and became relieved and updated Java with the new update...until I proceeded to download ClamXav (app store free version) as a future precautionary measure. This is when I ran a scan and discover 2 OSX Flashback-8 infections. One .null and one .rserv. Both of which I promptly removed, which sent them to the trash. When I attempted emptying the trash neither could be permanently deleted bc both were "in use". Â
How do I still have the trojan, virus, malware or whatever you want to call it if terminal found nothing but ClamXav did? Is this just a variation that hasn't really been encountered before?Â
I should also note that in my Library I have both null. plist and com. adobe. reader. plist that had been recently modified in the last couple of weeks (these were mentioned in several articles as potential launcher files. Â
Any thoughts or should I just completely restore my Macbook Pro?

The initial instructions are: 1. Run the following command in Terminal: ls -lA ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ 2. Take note of the filename. Proceed only when you have one file. Otherwise contact our customer care. I ran the indicated command and encountered this output: Node00:~ mdyson$ ls -lA ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ total 64
[code]...
In item 2,based on multiple results,my apparent next step would be to contact "our customer care" but I am not F-Secure customer and instructions as to exactly whom and how I am to contact them are lacking. For various reasons I did have Java installed and enabled in Safari.

I have the following question: I have checked my mac on flashback with flashback removal tool from Kaspersky. It detected (nd removed then) flashback although I have OS X.7. But every time I start the computer, the virus is detected by the removal tool again...However, all other anti-virus programmes are detecting no threat. i have also installed the malware removal app from apple. So I definitely do not understand why the Kaspersky tool is still detecting the virus.Â

I went through some fairly difficult procedures to rid my computer of Flashback and quickly got in over my head. So I called tech support, and they told me, if I have OS X 10.7 and do software updates regularly, that I have nothing to worry about. They said Safari is not compromised, and there's no reason not to enable Java. They said software updates is more important than any third party anti-virus or anti-malware software that I could run. I would like to know what some of you in the forum think about these issues.

While messing around with iPhoto and Time Machine, I ended up in the following situation. When trying to open Pictures on the sidebar of Finder, a Terminal shell pops up on the screen. Similarly, if I try to open Pictures on a Time Machine screen, I get the message "Open with Terminal" Now, I don't know how to use Terminal. How can I come back to the anterior situation where I could open Picture jut by a click?

"More than half a million Macs are infected with the Flashback Trojan, a malware package designed to steal personal information, according to a Russian antivirus company." on Cnet:Â

I went to the Fsecure link and followed some of the steps on terminal. None of the file names came up so it seems like my computer is clean, but how can I be 100% sure? What's a good virus/malware/trojan scan I can run on my computer to be 100% sure?Â

Unfortunately, I got hit with Flashback on my imac. I've removed it with ClamAV and now I'm trying to clean things up and learn from my own mistakes. I've disabled Java and I am in the process of changing all my passwords everywhere I can. One mistake I had made was to use myself as administrator as my only account. I would like to change that, but one reason I hadn't done so earlier is that everything I've done and set up for the last 10 years is in my administrator account.
Is there a simple way to transfer everything over to the user account, rather than starting with a blank slate and trying to set things up from memory? And if so, should I then erase or delete things from my admin account? Which things and how do I do that quickly? I know I shouldn't have been using my admin account as user, but it didn't seem like a big deal back in 2002. Now I've been burned, and I want to get this fixed.

I just tried to add a partition to my external HDD (which I use for Time Machine). I used Disk Utility to add a partition of 100GB (leaving an extra 200GB for the Time Machine partition). This process took about 30 seconds and when both partitions re-mounted they were both empty. I went back into Disk Utility and deleted the second partition I just added and resized the Time Machine partition back to using 100% of the HDD.

I was putting in a new external HD into a external dock, that I was going to partition and format for Mac. Well I must have had my movie External drive on and overlooked it somehow, and accidentally formatted that one instead thinking that I was using the new drive. What was strange was it said the drive was not readable and needed to be initialized. So I assumed, that was the drive that needed to be partitioned, yes I partitioned it, then formatted it for Mac. I even wrote some files on it about 20 GB or so. We are talking about a 1 TB HD. Anyway , It's not possible is it to reclaim my drive is it? Sad thing is it was my movies drive. I lost 151 movies. I am so angry at myself. And of course it was not part of my time machine. So am I out of luck?
