OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migrating From HP To New MBP - Quit Transferring At Last Moment
May 18, 2012
I was migrating from my HP to my new MacBook Pro laptops and it quit transferring with less than a minute remaining. I had no choice but to abort from my HP and now my apple is stuck. How do I abort from my MacBook or pick up where it left off?

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro from my very Old MacBook, but it was running latest version of Snow leopard. I first tried the set up assistant to transfer all my Information from Time Machine Back up to New MacBook pro. This seemed to work fine except Mail.
Mail launches says that it is transferring my e-mails (11,000+) this runs OK, then it says that I am going to be upgraded and the little box says "Migrating data", this just runs and runs and basically nothing happens and I can't run Mail.
My iCloud is configured and this is all working from the web, also it is working fine on my iPhone 4s. I have also tried creating a Test account deleting the origional transferred account (my old Computer) then instead of using the Wizard I used the Migration assistant. This has basically done the same as the above.

I have noticed that recently my main OS Drive (500 GB Hitachi Drive running latest Lion 10.7.4) on my MacPro (2008) Desktop machine is having performance issues (not shutting down properly or restarting properly etc). I am concerned that the drive will soon crash so I have purchased and installed a new 1Tb WD Black Caviar Drive (placed it in Bay 3). I would like to migrate the complete original OS Drive (with all its Apps etc) in Bay 1 to the new Black Caviar Drive in Bay 3. I will then remove the 'old' Hitachi OS Drive in Bay 1 and replace it with the new WD Black Caviar Drive from Bay 3. It is the migration process that I am unsure about. Do I use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to simply copy the Main OSX Drive from Bay 1 to Bay 3 where the new 1 Tb Black Caviar Drive resides? I guess I would then remove the old 500 GB OSX Drive in Bay 1 and replace it with the newly copied drive in Bay 3 (1Tb Black Caviar).

I have been migrating files from a PC to a MacBookPro. The migration screen is no longer up on the PC, but the Mac screen says "about 11 minutes remaining." This has been up for about an hour with no progression. Is there a way I can stop the migration where it is and finish manually?

Migrated from an older 2007 iMac to a new iMac w/ OSX Lion via ethernet connection between the two machines.
Migration appeared to proceed smoothly but on starting the new Mac I noticed that I did not have any of my emails (client is Mail), nor my contacts.
So what exactly does the migration assistant transfer?...
I am also looking for the User/Library section and cannot find it. On my old machine all the email attachments where stored there. Has the folder structure changed that much? (and can you point me to some article that illustrates the changes between the 2 OSs?)

I just migrated my old MacBook running Snow Leopard to my new MacBook running Lion. After successfully migrating, I am presented with a login for "Guest" only. That is the only account available to me for some reason. When I try to enter every password I can think of, I am given the password hint "guest". Entering that does not work. I've tried the usual Apple public passwords too. What is going on here? What happened to my migrated user account? I went through the entire setup configuration of Lion and even entered and submitted my personal data to Apple for registration. I just say, not impressed with Lion so far ...

I have a new MBP with MacOSX 10.7 I just set it up using the Migration Assistant. The old one was using MacOSX 10.5 with a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive. Everything went fine, restoring all from my Time Machine backup. But now, on the new MBP, I cannot enter in the old TM backup. I can browse it with the finder but not use it through the TM interface. If I chose the disk containing the old TM backup in the TM preference, TM starts a brand new backup. How do I have to proceed to continue using my old backup or almost be able to use it as a former one through the TM interface?

I'm trying to transfer files from my Windows 7 based PC to my new Mac Air using Migration Assistant and my home BT Broadband network. On three occasions now my PC has lost it's B'B network connection during the file transfer process. The only way I've been able to reconnect my PC to the network has been by unplugging and re-booting the network hub, by which time of course, 3 or 4 hours of file transferring to my MAc has been lost and I have to start again - 3 times now and none completed!

[UPDATE]
[Version 3]
Ok well some people thought it was starting to look too generic, which I can agree with. I've tried a new approach, slightly. Some problems with the port placements have stopped me for the moment, but I'll tackle this sometime soon and see if I can work them out.
[Version 2]
Here is an updated version with a few of the suggestions posted, and a few modifications I thought were necessary. I also included some theoretical specifications. Let's keep going! : )
Version 2
[Version 1]
This is my concept of what an apple tablet might look like. This was just for fun. What do you guys think, agree with, disagree with.
Personally I feel that it will run full OS X and therefore I have put the necessary ports. I have also included a volume rocker and a dock connector. Lets see some other depictions from the creatives out there?

I just transferred a group of users from the Local directory to the LDAP directory. There directories are in place and haven't changed, and neither has the size of the email folders in the Library->Server->Mail->Data folder. But now, there are no messages in the directories, including the Inbox. It's empty except for a single message that says "no subject" and has no content.

I recently purchaed a Macbok Pro 15" the disk has only 3 user accounts Guest and 2 personal accounts. I have a SuperDuper backup of the Macbook Pro 17" disk and would like to restore the Users folder. However, Migration Assistant complaints all the accounts exists on the new computer! There are no accounts on the new computer with the same name. I rename the accounts but Migration Assistant complains those accounts exists. Migration Assistant restored Applications, computer settings and other folder. The option to replace the account is greyed and cannot be selected and renaming is not working.

Can anyone with a new MBP comment on this behavior? It doesn't happen on the switch from Intel->Nvidia, just the other way around.

So I'm having problems with my setup, and looking to find a possible remedy. I have setup my Mac with a 120G SSD in my main drive bay, and moved my 750G HHD to an optibay setup. I booted off a USB copy of lion to install it on the SSD, used migration assistant to move my things over.
So currently it boots off the SSD (named Boot Drive), has a "boot user" with its home folder on the SSD, and has my old user (lets call it "olduser") on the orignal drive HDD (called Optibay) and I created a new user when logged into the "boot user" with the same name "olduser", and moved its home directory to the old HDD path, /Volumes/Optibay/Users/Olduser. Then I deleted everything except the user folder on the HDD.
BUT, I'm having spin up issues, and constant read/write on the HDD in the optibay even on the boot user, and at times it shouldn't be. I have moved my files around enough that I can now fit the "olduser" onto the SSD, (moved the contents of Movies, Pictures, Documents, and Music folders into new folders @ /Volumes/Optibay/Myfolders).
So how do I move the home folder/user from the HDD to the SSD. I can't quite figure out the best way to do it with preserving all my settings and everything that is at the root level on the HDD to the SSD. Trying to preserve permissions seems to be the biggest issue. Should I be logged into "olderuser" and copy the user folder onto the SSD, then login to the boot user and just change the home directory path to the new one? Or should I be logged onto boot user when I make the move? The end goal is to make the optibay drive ejectable while running on my olduser account so I can get it to spin down

Our two computers running Leopard can transfer files across our home network to all other computers with no problems, and can grab files from other computers with no problems. Our new iMac Lion can't do any of that. The long: We have recently purchased a new iMac (Lion 10.7.3), and have connected our old 2006 iMac (Leopard 10.5.8) to the TV and stereo (and directly to our B/G/N Airport Extreme) for use primarily as a media server. We also have an MBP (Leopard 10.5.8). All three computers are shared on a home network, and I believe I have set up the sharing and permissions correctly.
From both Leopard computers I can transfer files back and forth, as well as access files on the other and bring them over. Additonally, from both Leopard computers I can do the same while accessing the iMac Lion- either transfer files to it, or connect to it and bring files over. This is what leads me to believe that the sharing is set up correctly. However, when I am on the iMac Lion and try to do any of these processes with either of the Leopards, I get a confusing set of steps and ultimately, failure.
First, I when I try to transfer or copy a file I get a window asking: Finder wants to make changes. type your password to allow this. It automatically fills in the admin username for the iMac Lion. While it is waiting for me to enter the password, a progress bar pops up stating that it is "Preparing to copy to "(Location)", and then I enter the password. As soon as I enter the password, a new window tells me that: A newer item named “(filename here)” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving? (note- this 'file' has just been created, it is the 'newer item', and it contains zero kb of information). and gives me three options: Keep both files, Stop, or Replace If I choose Keep both files it immediately begins duplicating the empty version of the file and it will make thousands of duplicates in mere seconds. I must kill Finder in order to make it stop.
If I choose Stop the process simply quits. If I choose Replace it says The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “” already exists. (the quotation marks are exactly like that with no filename inbetween). Summary: I am at a loss as to how to proceed. I cannot seem to find why the iMac Lion cannot do anything to the Leopards, while the Leopards seem to have full abilities, even with the Lion. I have tried turning off AFP and turning on SMB to no avail. It is incredibly helpful to be able to share files between our systems, as the iMac Leopard has PPC programs that I cannot install or run on Lion, and so I keep them around in case I need them. Plus, my wife uses the MBP Leopard for specialized research and many of the programs they use do not run with Lion.

I got my new Office Mac, and I was hoping to install it. It said Firefox and Safari needed to close. Firefox was a snap (good job guys!), but Safari is doing HORRIBLE. It is not forcing to quit at all, and I don't want to restart or shut down (I bet it wouldn't work.) Now, according to THIS issue... I can't install my Mac Office 2011, and THAT on the other hand stinks, because I need it for school projects.
