I have the "cannot move files" error message, and after 10hours of idefrag booted from a CD, it still says the same message.
So i assume i have to format and reinstall OSX?
I can backup using time machine to an exernal drive, thats no probs, but when i reinstall OSX i dont have my snowleopard disks to hand, would that be a problem, or would it copy from timemachine? (its at a parents house and i wont be able to get it till next week).

In retrospect, I should have ignored it when Apple Software Update told me about the Boot Camp 3.2 upgrade for my 2006 Mac Pro running x64 Win 7 ultimate. When I ran it, it overwrote my blue tooth driver and my keyboard stopped working. Thanks for the folks at Mac Rumors forums, I was able to go through the procedure to get it working again, and I also had to update the video driver (again) from ATI for my 3800.
So then I decide to reboot into MacOS and discover that my icon for selecting the boot disk was gone, not to mention any directory or programs in the start menu. This happen to anyone else? Do I have to downgrade to 3.1 or does anyone have a recommendation to get 3.2 working?

I just ran the Boot Camp utility and installed Windows 7 on my Mac Mini. Everything seems to work pretty well. From Windows I can see the Mac partition and from Mac I can see the Windows partition. Each OS has it's own Users file structure. Now, I recently converted over to Mac this month and have over a decade worth of files from my PC that I plan to migrate over. Best-case, I would like to be able to easily access those files no matter what OS I am using. Should I create a 3rd partition for just files? Pick either the Mac or Windows partition to be the master for the files? Can each OS easily use a different folder for the Users files (I know I was able to do it with Vista in the past, not sure about SL).

am not sure if I am posting this in the right category. I am new on here so forgive me if it is not in the right place. I am having trouble with my partition using boot camp. I am getting an error about the files not being able to be moved. I have repaired permissions... did not work. Defragmented.... did not work. When I look at the defrag log I see that there is an error -43 on a jpg, which I can not find. All the other errors are items running that pertain to actually the computer working (quit all files that were opened just to make sure).

I need help about boot camp..I was trying to partition my MBP but it's not working because of an error.
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved"
Back up disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again"
Can anyone explain to me what to do? I seriously want to have Windows 7 on my mac so I could play Starcraft II much better.

I launched the Boot Camp Assistant 2.0 on my iMac OS X v10.5. I was hoping to install Windows XP Professional with Built-in Service Pack 3. However, when I tried to partition the disk (32 GB on Windows), a message came up, saying "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." It states some directions underneath, but, as I am new to Boot Camp and Mac, I don't know what to do and how to do. Please help!

I wanted a larger Windows partition so I went into Boot Camp assistant and deleted the Windows partition, made a new one and proceeded to insert my Windows CD. It went through the installation process and i selected the right drive/partition to have a quick NTFS format. After the format, my MacBook restarted and stalled. Needless to say, Boot Camp ran a quick NTFS format on the entire drive.
Now, is there any way to recover any of the files that were quickly formatted? Is there any good software out there that may be able to recover anything?

Last night I installed VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 on my Unibody MBP running SL. When I use Fusion, my computer slows to a crawl. I spent a few hours getting Windows set up and installing software last night.
I would like to try using Boot Camp instead, but do not want to lose all of the software and files that I have installed. Is it possible to set up Boot Camp, and keep the same Windows setup?

Yesterday when I wanted to boot Vista Ultimate 32-Bits on my 20" iMac (late 2006 model) it only gave me BSODs at startup and then rebooted my computer automatically. I tought: OK, let's just erase Windows. So I fired up Boot Camp-assistent and deleted the Windows partition. Today, I wanted to reinstall Windows Vista again, but when I tried to partition my drive with bootcamp, it gave me the error saying that my harddrive could not be partitioned because some files can't be moved. It says I'll have to format my hardrive to 1 partition using the Drive Utility. But I'm very afraid I do something wrong and that Mac OS can't boot anymore. I also don't have a drive to store a back-up of all my files on. Can I just ignore this screen and if I do, will I be able to start Mac OS X normally? I DO NOT want to install Windows after this anymore, guess I will buy a PC for games in a while or go to my friend's house to play Crysis and such.

When I try to run boot camp I'm getting a can't move files error, as seen below. I do run Time Machine all the time, does this mean if I re format my HD I can just get all my data, every little bit, using time machine?

Usually when I go to "Restart into Mac OS X" from Boot Camp's system tray icon it works fine, but just recently it has started giving me this error and not working. It seems like usually when this errors hows it's because the Mac volume is bad or missing, but I have a perfectly working HFS+ boot volume that is visible in Windows and boots just fine. I do also have a second HFS+ partition for data, but no problems with them.

Is it possible to boot from an external Firewire DVD Drive? It certainly isnt from an external USB DVD. Real answers only please, not "I think so" ones based on HDDs or rumours you may have heard!...
Background:
I've got an MCE Optibay in my Mid-2010 i7 MBP. When installing Bootcamp it refuses to install from the external USB DVD drive. In the end I pulled the 2nd HDD out and reconnected the internal DVD. It then worked fine without a hitch. Then I reinstalled the 2nd HDD and all was fine for a few days.
Now I want to resize my Win7 partition (bigger, as MS Visual Studio's bigger than I thought, and I might stick some games on). I can shrink the OSX partition fine with Disk Utility, but windows won't grow the Win7 one because the empty space is before the Win7 partition, not after it. Apparently this can be done with GParted. Guess what? I can't boot the Linux based GParted CDROM from the external USB DVD drive! So, will a Firewire one work where USB fails, and solve my alternative OS booting issues? If I buy one I can then either use GParted, or delete the Win7 partition and start again without having to pull the laptop to bits all over again, only to put it back once I'm done, and possibly have the same issues in the future. Obviously I don't want to blow extra money getting a Firewire DVD drive though if it's a waste of money...

This is the 1st time i got a Mac , i bought a black Macbook 2.4GHz some days ago .
I installed Windows Vista Ultimate using Boot Camp , and all went smoothly .
Only 1 prob is when restarting , i have to wait too long for the Windows to log on , i think about 1min with the black screen.
And if i want to boot in Mac OS , i have to push down the D button or the Alt, it takes quite a long time too .
So do you guys have any solution to this problem ? I want to get rid of the waiting time, way too much.
And do you know how to make my Macbook jump right in the choosing section when it starts ? ( so that i dont have to push down any button when it starts )

Is there a way to make the Boot Camp menu the default boot screen, as opposed to holding Alt? This is the latest SL release, if that matters.
I know this is possible in some manner, our networked iMacs all do it; they start up and give the option to boot OS X or Windows, with a countdown to boot the default OS. I'd just like the same thing to happen on my MBP.

I have done some research on triple boot systems, and it appears that a third OS must be run virtually, but all the information I came across was a few years old. Microsoft is running a deal right now on Windows 7 for students so I would like to pick up a copy and try it out.
Is it possible to run 3 operating systems through Boot Camp 3.0? I am not interested in running a virtual OS.
Current Setup:
13" macbook pro
Snow Leopard and Windows XP through Boot Camp

I have been trying to install Windows 7 (yes, legit copy) to my Macbook Pro the whole day, but I keep on getting this error message saying "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd . . . ."
When I press any key on the keyboard, nothing happens. I know this copy works because I've tried this on VMWare 3. (I'm going to Boot Camp of BIOSHOCK!)
What I've Tried:
Deleted partition, recreate partition and choose the Windows 7 disk as startup disk.

Have the new 15" MBP with i7 Processor. I had another MBP with a 7200RPM drive and installed drive in the new i7 Mac. Computer was working fine until I installed Windows via Boot Camp. I can't boot to the Mac Partition any more, the partition is there but when you try to boot to it you just see the Apple logo and NO circle. I cannot boot to the install CDs or a bootable external drive. I target disk mode the computer and used another computer to boot using the drive in the i7 unit and it's fine and I can see all the information. I tried booting the i7 into single user mode and saw the following message:
efiboot loaded from device: Acpi(PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1|1)/Ata(Primary,Master)/HD(Part 2,Sig********-****-****-****-************)
boot file path: SystemLibraryCoreServicesoot.efi
.Loading 'mach_kernel'...

I'm in a program (Safari, Word, iDesign, etc., I click open file > desktop (or any other folder), and nothing appears.just the spinning wheel (that won't stop).I had my hard drive replaced in March after my system started running slow one day, then froze. I did a hard reboot, and it wouldn't come back on.A week after I got it back, I started getting the "gray screen of deaf" with the spinning wheel. So I took it back in and they replaced the operating system (10.7.3).It worked fine for a few days, but for the last couple of weeks, I've had to do a hard reboot just about everyday due to my system freezing up.I've updated to OS X 10.7.4, which wasn't easy. Cllicking "update OS" didn't work...it always ended up telling me unable to update this operating sytem. I had to download the OS from this Apple site. It took about 20 hours to update (?!?) I can't afford to be without my system for too many days while in the shop at this time. Do I need to start looking into a new system.

I want to install XP using Boot Camp but when I run the Boot Camp Assistant I get the following message
Boot Camp Assistant can not be used
You must update your computer's Boot ROM firmware before using this setup assistant.
Now I have tried all firmware updates available on apple site but they say they are not needed, I'm on 10.5.6 and a friend of mine with same firmware runs his boot camp comfortably.
My Boot ROM Version:MB21.00A5.B07
SMC Version:1.17f0

so first off, sorry for the potential repost. I couldn't find the answer on the forum so I am starting a new thread.
Let's say I have a 50gb music library. I want to put all 50gb on the external, and keep about 30gb on my iBook.
That part was easy enough, however I am running into problems keeping everything in my library located.
Everytime I disconnect and then reconnect the external, anything that's not on my iBook can't be located.
I want to make it so that when the external is not connected, my entire library (EXT and INT) is shown[obviously, I won't be able to play anything that resides on the EXT], and when I connect the EXT, I want it to locate the files that are external only.
I also want iTunes to keep my folders organized, there, that's the kicker.

On linux I use "locate" to find anything via command line. I see that locate is installed on my Mac but invoking it does not always find what I am looking for I thought that maybe I need to update the database but $ sudo slocate -u gives me a command not found error. Is there a cool apple trick to finding files that I know are right in front of my face?

I just installed Windows XP to a Boot Camp Partition on my MBP. However, rebooting is a hassle and naturally I want to avoid doing such as often as possible. I think running Parallels Desktop would suit my needs quite well. But here's the catch: I want to be able to use one partition to serve both of those needs. In other words I want have the option of booting through both Boot Camp or Parallels.
How would I go about doing this? I already have a XP installed via Boot Camp. So if there is a method where I don't have to reinstall, great, but I am fine with deleting stuff.
