It starts to transfer and then says a file containg that name already exists. here is how it is setup La Cie(Content) --Firewire 800---->Macbook Pro---FireWire 400--> WD(empty)
im trying the drag and drop method. Am i doing something wrong is there a free program that can do this for me?

I have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to process large files (few GB) from a measurement. The data files contain lists of measured events.I process them event by event and the result is relatively small and does not occupy much memory. The problem I am facing is that Lion "thinks" that I want to use the large data files later again and puts them into cache (inactive memory). The inactive memory is growing during the reading of the datafiles up to a point where the whole memory is full (8GB on MacBook Pro mid 2010) and it starts swapping a lot. That of course slows down the computer considerably including the process that reads the data.
If I run "purge" command in Terminal, the inactive memory is cleared and it starts to be more responsive again. The question is: is there any way how to prevent Lion to start pushing running programs from memory into the swap on cost of useless harddrive cache?Â
Have a brand new iMac with 1TB hard drive but it says it's nearly full, less than 1 GB free. Can't find any real large files. Where can I look?

I'd like to migrate from iMac #1, which has only 1 user, to iMac #2, which has 3 users.
Ideally, the user from iMac #1 would replace one of the users on iMac #2, or, it could be a new user on iMac #2.Â

I have a folder with about 600 funny photos that I randomly saved. And you know how pictures you save from sites have random long numbers as names? Well here is what I want: I want to know if there is a way to automatically number all the photos starting from 1. Any way to do it that is already in Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 or recommend some software.

I have tried very hard to find the answer to my transferring question, but nowhere do I find my answer nor does Apple offer free help or even help by email.
So here is my issue. I want to transfer all my personal data from my HOME user account on my MacBook to a NEW user account on the SAME MacBook. The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOkay, so I left my two year olds alone for a minute playing the "alphabet game" on my Mac Mini. They only had the keyboard, no mouse but managed to muck up my display leaving me a bit frustrated. The screen is now too large for my Samsung display. The only way to see everything (dock, top bar, etc) is to move my mouse arrow to the end of my display and see it roll back onto the page. I've checked the settings there and they are fine. The MacBook Pro plugs right in and is proper resolution. So I then wondered if another account on the Mac Mini would do the same thing. I logged out of my Admin account and into another and everything looks just dandy. I log back into my Admin account and it's too large and blurry again. The resolution is set correct at 1920x1080 at 60 Hz. Â
What button did they push on my keyboard that would do this and how do I get it back?
Earlier i posted to ask how can i format using SL upgrade disk. I came across a problem. I have a work .ISO image which is about 9 GB and i tried copying that to my External HD with 20GB free Disc space. I am not able to copy it. I tried searching for a program which will make it into an archive and split it (like WinRAR in PC) but wasn't successful.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was having a lot of problems with my new (Christmas 11) MPB. It was very sluggish and occasionally would freeze. I took it to my Apple Store and the Genius said I was running all my apps in root and had too many files on the desktop. They should be under a user. Any files on the desktop are refreshed frequently, such as graphics (CAD, pictures, etc.) and that was what was killing performance. She then proceded to move my files/apps to my user profile.
Since I am the only user, I never paid any attention to where the files were.I would like to verify the information above and do the same process on two other computers, but I didn't catch enough of what she did to do it solo.

I copied a lot of information to my friend's mid-2010 MBP, about 80GB of data. Used iChat - transfer took about three hours but it got there. Before the transfer her laptop was very quick - didn't have much installed, plenty of free space. After the transfer, the laptop still have a lot of free space (>100GB) but is very slow. Before the laptop would take maybe 1 minute to boot up.. now it's over three. She experiences bouncing beach balls when loading applications.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a new Macbook and was planning on transfering my very large music folder (100+gb) using the target disc feature and a firewire cable. However, I completely forgot that the new Macbooks don't have firewire ports. So, I'm wondering what my options are...
I'd like to avoid wireless and Migration Assistant because of their slow speed. I know I can use a crossover cable to create an ethernet connection, but I don't currently have one with me and I'm kind of eager to get this computer set up tonight.
I'm wondering if it's possible to use a regular ethernet cable to do the same thing? Or possibly connect both computers to my router using seperate ethernet cables? (and would that option improve the speed of transfer)? Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.
If nothing else works I'd be willing to wait a day and buy either the crossover cable or a usb converter for my firewire cable to do target disk (would that even work?).
I have two MacBook Pros running 10.7.4. I wanted to copy one iPhoto library from one device to the other using a new Thunderbolt cable. The file is approximately 60GB. When I copy a small file of 1.0 to 2.0 BG in size, the transfer is incredibly fast -- as in seconds. Â
When I try to transfer the large file (60GB), the transfer is very slow, and Finder says it will take 12 hours. Oh, and I am not running any anti-virus software.Â

I have an old (bought in 2003) iMac flat panel, 1.25GHz PPCG4, with 768MB DDR SDRAM, with the Tiger 10.4.11 system on it. I want to buy a Macbook air or pro but I discovered that I cannot transfer files directly from Tiger to Lion. I cannot upgrade to Leopard neither (not enough space). I don't want to loose my photos or music or emails etc. What options do I have ?
Is there anything that would not be possible to save, whatever the option? I have another question about external hardware: I'm using a LaCie external DVD drive Super Write Master and an external hard disk (only 300GB) LaCie Little big disk, a few years old. Would they work with the new computer?

I was trying to discover what was eating up all my disc space on my 11 inch MBA. After doing some research I discovered over 30GB was being eaten up by a particular type of file in "/users/username/library/mail/V2/mailboxes/recovered messages/89AF938B-6B1D-44AC-9E37-158CF278B361/DATA/3/messages". I found 288 ".emlx" files, all duplicates of one another, each is 112MB big. And they continually copy themselves.
Looking at the dates, the first file in the folder was created 12/02/2012 and the most recent file in the folder was created roughly 15 minutes ago on todays date of 23/02/2012. In fact while inspecting the folder, I saw before my eyes them being duplicated. Because I had one of the files highlighted, then began to use safari for a few minutes, and when I came back, there were more of the things underneath the one which I had highlighted!
The files are email files, and they are all copies of a particular email I sent using iPhoto. I sent an album of about 25 or so photos through the iPhoto sharing feature. So is iPhoto or Mail backing up this email over and over again for some reason? They seem to copy themselves only when both iPhoto and Mail applications are open at the same time. I know this because I have experimented with it and can see more and more being created.

My Mac has my home folder on an internal HD (with the startup disk on internal SSD). How do I get the "locate" command to index (and hence be able to find) all files that are in my user folder (~/) and its subfolders? I want to be able to do this without changing permissions on my user files, of course.

I am manually moving files from a Time Machine backup. How do I view the user's home Library files that are in the backup? I need to move over some of their preferences and bookmarks.
