IMac PPC :: Make It Automatically Index A USB Drive?
Jun 13, 2012
When I connect a USB drive, it shows up on my desktop, but Finder won't find anything on it because it doesn't get indexed. I'm running OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) on an iMac G5 with a PowerPC G5 (3.0) processor. The drive in question is NTFS, but it also seems like the Mac doesn't index FAT-formatted USB drives if they were formatted on a PC. Is there any way that automatic indexing could have been turned off? I think the department that had this system before we got it would have turned that off if possible, and I'd like to find out how to turn it back on?
My Mac has my home folder on an internal HD (with the startup disk on internal SSD). How do I get the "locate" command to index (and hence be able to find) all files that are in my user folder (~/) and its subfolders? I want to be able to do this without changing permissions on my user files, of course.
Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 3.4GHz Corei7, 16GB, SSD + 2T HD
I noticed the other day that mds was taking up all my cpu power, and spotlight was trying to index my drive, with 876489 hours remaining. Did a bit of googling and found and got a terminal command to reset the whole of spotlight, left it over night next morning it was stuck at 90%. I then tried the application spotless to reset spotlight...left it over night now stuck on 89% with 157859 hours remaining. IMac G5 2.1Gz, 350GB of a 500GB drive used.
When and how often does Spotlight index a drive? After 1-1/2 months of owning my MBA, Spotlight is indexing my drive today. I don't know if it is doing it for the first time. But it is the first time I noticed it, as it is slowing down everything, and is taking forever (~ 1-2 min for every 1%).
I would have thought my drive would be all indexed by now -- 90+ days of owning it.
I wonder if it has anything to do with what I am doing on my computer today, that may have trigger this. I copied 3 dvd movie files over and was ripping them with Handbrake today to get ready for a trip next week. I also connected an external drive to have it re-formated. However, after all the ripping was done, and external drive removed. It is still indexing at the moment (2 more hours to go according to the progress bar).
I am tempted to restart the computer, and stop the indexing. But then I shouldn't, if it's a part of the normal routine.
i recently purchased a second hand iMac, everything is working fine on it apart from one wierd problem when i insert a DVD into the superdrive it decides to eject the disk by itself, and if I insert a CD it plays fine. Im on 10.7.4 (os x lion)
It's actually one of five partions on the external drive, and the only one with a problem. Two of the other four are nicely on the Privacy List, and the other two are both indexed and kept nicely up to date. But the Fifth cannot be indexed, although it once was partially. I have run Spotless, which lists all other drives just as I expect but for this one it reports: "The Metadata Server is reporting that content indexing is DISABLED for the volume Fifth but the volume itself is reporting that the content indexing status is set to ENABLED." It is possible to find an 8Kb index on the volume, then Trash and delete it; Spotlight immediately re-creates another index-in-waiting but does not actually do the indexing or add anything in the folder. An added frustration is that the 'folder' is both invisible, locked and seems to be without 'ownership' or other conventional attributes.
1) I have done the primitive Add to Privacy and Remove Dance nothing has changed.
2) I have used Terminal, deleted all .Spotlight-V100 indexes, disabled Spotlight rebooted, renabled it and rebooted—nothing has changed. This included carefully following steps in other posters' accounts (some failed, some succeeded) and a site that gave a particularly thorough version.
3) I have used Spotless although it offers to do such things as Delete the empty index and re-start Indxing, it then reports it couldn't due to an unexpected error.
4) Some folks have pointed to another faulty invisible file variously naming it '.metadate_never_index' and '.metadataneverindex', to be found in '.hostconfig' or eleswhere at the root and destroyed, but I never didscovered anything like it. I did perhaps succeed in adding the line: SPOTLIGHT=-YES- to that file, based on another bit of advice, but it seems to have had no effect.
The terrible irony is that I use FindAnyFile and good ol' FileBuddy for all my searching. All I want is to 'Show Item Info' in Finder's View Options. Wouldn't you know that needs the Spotlight 'app'.Assuming the Spotless message is accurate, I need to convince the MetadataServer that indexing for that partition is enabled. How do I do that
One of my important external hard drives recently died and I was wondering of there was a way to see a list of files that were on the drive before it crashed, maybe the spotlight index?
Before sending the drive in for recovery (and not attempting to change the logic board myself) I would like to see if there is any private data on the drive that I wouldn't want to fall into the wrong hands.
i have a script that changes the permissions for files automatically. Is there a way to make this script run every time a file is added to a certain folder on my computer??
I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro core i5 and I would like the keyboard backlight to turn off automatically when I go into fullscreen mode when I watch a video. Is there any setting I can change, so I don't have to turn it off manually every time I watch a movie?
My old TiBook running Tiger did this without a hitch, but now that I'm on Snow Leopard it refuses to automatically connect to any computer-to-computer network.
My new laptop is an aluminum MacBook though I doubt that makes any difference as I know it's an OSX issue.
I've listed it as a preferred network in the AirPort preferences pane, but it doesn't seem to help.
There might be a terminal command to make it do this but I don't know it. Any suggestions?
I am calucalting the working hours. For Eg: 8:00 AM & 1:20 PM and the duration is 5 h 20 m. How can i make '5" in hours column and "20" in minutes column automatically?
In one location I my macbook pro will not connect to network vis wifi unless I click on the desired network. My preference is set to automatically join, but it does not seem to be working. It is wep pw protected by have provided the password. That is not the problem. As soon as I click on my connection it comes right on. But it will not join automatically.
I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.Â
I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.Â
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.Â
Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?Â
Using a MBP 15 with latest Lion and Airport utility versions. When I start up my computer, the utility loads each time which is annoying. I went down the menu choices on the utility but can't find a way to stop this.
OK, brand new to Aperture from iPhoto. Not a professional just a frequent traveller with lots of pictures. In iPhoto we had Folders say "Travel" then Sub-Folders like "Turkey" then folders in there for various cities, so "Istanbul" for example. Then inside there we have an album.
Projects is unimportant to us because we do such a good job of organizing our photos, usually at the end of the day, but certainly on the plane ride home.I have Projects hidden in Aperture so that is fine. But today we tried to make a new Folder and it placed it at the bottom of Projects, if we make an album it places it at the bottom of all the other Folders in our Picture library.
Our work around was go back to iPhoto which works the way we want it to.Short of dragging the Folder that Aperture made in Projects down or working in iPhoto is there any other way to make a Folder appear automatically in the Pictures area vs. Projects?
I keep getting the error saying that my backup will not fit in the backup volume, but shouldn't Time Machine automatically delete old backups to make room for new ones?
My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.
I am doing a presentation for a class thingy in technology about new media and i'm trying to express how when macintosh youtubers started uploading video blogs when they switched to intel/intel made iMacs and about this media blah blah blah. In the pic attached is that a iMac G5 or intel. I see spot light on the top right so it's either running tiger or leopard. I thought I saw a apple remote magnetic thingy on the side. Did the iMac g5 have one?
I have a 20 inch iMac. Several moments after inserting a CD for importing via iTunes, the disc drive sounds like it struggles to read the disc and then ejects it!
For a long time my mac had around 10 GB of space left. Then, two nights ago, I got a notice that said my startup disk was full. I deleted some stuff, a bunch of movies that I didn't know existed, and I had 30 GB of space yesterday. But now, this morning, there is only 10 MB of space left! I think it may have something to do with a file called hfamily1.dmg, which took up 10 GB of space and I couldn't delete it, but I just left it there. But even that wouldn't take up all that room! I've always been connected to the internet, and I've always had an external drive plugged in. I'm running DiskInventoryX right now, but if this problem keeps happening.
Everytime I pop in my USB drive, iPhoto opens.. (of course, because it wants to import pictures. Which might not be what I want to do)Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
I just upgraded my late model Penryn MBP from the stock Hitachi 200GB 5400rpm drive to a Seagate 500GB 7200rpm drive. Performance wise, I'm happy. XBench is indicating a significant gain on the disk test (especially in the sequential test) and I loved being able to use Quicksilver almost as soon as I saw the menubar. However, when I turned on the machine, it did not recognize the drive automatically, and I had to hold down the Option key in order to get it to boot from the disk. I cloned my old HD using CarbonCopy Cloner. Once I did that everything was (obviously) fine. How can I get the MBP to recognize my new disk as the default boot volume?
Whenever I put my iMac to sleep it comes out of sleep immediately but the second time it goes to sleep and stays asleep.
I believe this is due to the bluetooth mouse I'm using however I have the setting to allow bluetooth to wake the mac turned off. Is there anyway I can pinpoint exactly what's causing this.
I have an imac running snow leopard. When I click on a pdf file it puts it in my download folder. Then I have to click the Macintosh HD, click on downloads, and then click on the file.
I'm wondering if it is possible to set up auto backup that includes an external hard drive. I kep a lot of data on an external, and back up manually periodically, but want to have an automated process to do so. I'm not sure if Time Capsule or ClickFree or Maxtor could be set up to handle that.
I keep my life on my USB drives and constantly bring it from work (PC) to home environment (macs all around). I need some software that would automatically backup/sync my USB drive when I place it in the mac at home each day. There seem to be a number of options available for windows, but I can't seem to find anything for the mac, all I keep coming across is ways to backup the mac to a USB drive! Preferably I would like it to automatically backup the drive each time I insert it, so I don't have to manually do it each day.
