OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Rename Files In Multiple Subfolders At Once
Apr 17, 2012
I have different files in various folders and subfolders that I wish to rename. So I need automator to search for files in all folders and subfolders of my external drive and find all files ending in .doc. Then I need each file to be renamed as "report.doc". (There is only one file per subfolder so there is no danger of having two files with the same name.)
I am looking for a script to do the following:I have different files in various folders and subfolders that I wish to rename. So I need a script to search for files in all folders and subfolders of my external drive and find all files ending in .doc.Then I need each file to be renamed as "report.doc". I feel dumb asking this, but I'm trying to create an Automator workflow to rename multiple picture files and once and I've used this tutorial... The problem is that when I right-click my files or hit "control" and click the files I want to use I don't get an option that says "more" (see second picture of tutorial) so I can get the files into Automator. In place of "more" at the bottom of the Contextual menu I have an option that says "Set Desktop Picture". How can I get my files into Automator??
I have about 60 gigs of music. Each file is named "artistname - song name". How can I take the artist name out of all of them without timing my clicking to rename them. Also, I found that quite a few cds are actually named like "artist.name.song.name" for some reason. Now windows lets me push the tab key and will let me keep going without using the mouse which is way less time consuming. Is there a way I can do that on a Mac? Will automator work for what I am doing?
In mail, i can only save to Downloads or a folder on the same level. It won't let me choose a subfolder or create a folder like i could before. Same thing when i try to save a file. When i'm using Adobe CS3 applications i swich to the adobe dialog boxes but this seems so stupid.
This is a HUGE time waster for me. I deal with a projects that involve a great quantity of files that need a lot of folder organization. Is this something to do with stacks? Am i being required to think differently?
I have set up an automator service that TAR's a folder into an archive for me and it works quite nicely. Idealy however, I would like to be able to highlight several folders, right click and have automator tar each folder into it's own TAR archive, but do it one by one. Â
[Code]...
I'm not 100% sure so I guess it would be a good time to verify, is there a problem with having the system try to TAR multiple folders at one time? If it is not a problem then I guess this discussion itself is pointless and I can simple right click on each folder and select "TAR Folder" and just wait until they're all finished. I would think that it would be ideal for the system to do each one individually and not try to do them all at one time.Â
I've able to get an automator service to rename a bunch of files exactly the way I want by having it "Copy Finder Items" and then Make Finder Items Sequential". But it then dumps all the renamed files on the desktop. How do I add an option for it to either create a folder to put it in or dump the files into a pre-existing folder?
When I drag-and-hold a file to a folder with the purpose of placing it into one of its subfolders, I can't go past the first folder: in other words, unlike Mavericks, where I could drag the file and open one folder after the other until I could just release my file into the final destination, since I installed Yosemite I can't do it any longer and when I place the dragged file over a subfolder all I see is a "+" sign, but the folder won't open. Is there a way to restore that functionality?Â
Info: MACBOOK PRO (RETINA, 15-INCH, LATE 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9)
I have a folder with numerous subfolders, each containing numerous files that i would like to batch unlock (vs tediously unlocking each individual folder).
failed attempts involve:
- tried the following terminal action: sudo chflags -R nouchg ( as suggested on this website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106237) but it did not work.
I did not try the other suggestions on the website because it started getting really complicated and i was afraid to do something that may cause damage/delete my files
- tried unlocking the folders and subfolders, however each individual file within the corresponding folder/subfolders remained locked
Partial but suboptimal solutions tried: - i found a partial but not optimal solution to my problem on this site:
however, the option-command-I will only allow me to unlock files each subfolder at a time (as i need to actually highlight the files themselves).
is there a way where i could just unlock all the folder/subfolders/files within an entire directory in one fell swoop?
My system:
- the new MBP running Mac OS X 10.5.2
i am a new mac user and i apologize in advance if there is some simple solution to this problem that i have yet failed to discover,
When I open my USB flash drive on my mac (snow leopard), all the files are expanded, and I can't figure out why. Then I have to go one by one closing them, and it's frustrating. Is there a way to set it to be collasped or expanded?
For some reason my mac won't let me rename any of my files. It comes up with 'You do not have sufficient privileges to rename the item' every time I try. What's the deal?
Trying to rename a couple files in finder. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I can click on the file to bring up the cursor, and the name gets highlighted. Once I start typing however, it just takes whatever I have typed and closes the cursor edit box and I have to start all over again.
It's like I have a 2 second window to rename a file. Even if I click and the cursor comes up, if I don't type anything and watch it the cursor disappears after 2-5 seconds.
Can I merge multiple files, and multiple file types, into a single PDF with my MacBook Pro?, Can I merger multiple files, and multiple file types, into a single PDF with my MacBook Pro?Â
I need to combine word docs, .jpgs, .PDFs, .pptx files from multiple sources into a single PDF. In the past I've used software such as Nuance but I'm wondering if there's something in the MacBook Pro OS or applications that support this function.Â
I've noticed for a few months now both in 10.5 on my PowerMac and 10.6 on my MBP that often when I click to rename a file in the finder, it will a few seconds later "un-select" the renaming as if I had hit return to finish renaming the file. I then have to click it again to finish renaming the file. Sometimes, it will do this 2-3 times before it quits exiting on its own. I wonder if Spotlight could be interfering sometimes because it often seems to do it when the window is first open and OSX is in the middle of updating the little icons to show video snapshots and the like. But I've also seen it happen after they're all updated as well. I don't recall seeing this problem on either Mac more than say 6 months ago or so. It certainly never used to do it as I've had the MBP for over 2 years now and the PowerMac for around 4 years and I would have noticed. I wonder if one of the system updates might have changed something, for example.
Has anyone else noticed any issues with renaming files being unselected like that in the middle of typing?
is there an quicker way (preferably a keyboard command) to rename a file in the finder (or on the desktop) than either command+i (which then involves another click) or a slow double click on the file itself?
I have searched around and have not been able to find an answer to my problem. I am having a very tough time trying to rename files/ folders on my late 2008 Unibody MB. This has always happened with this computer since the day I purchased it. When I am trying to rename a file or folder, I hit the return key so I can edit the name on the file. I then try to either backspace or click and drag the selected text that I want to delete. 9 out of 10 times it stops me from doing it mid deleting or adding text. It's like someone it pressing the return key as I am in the middle of editing the text. I am sure I am not pressing the trackpad or enter key accidentally. This is really getting on my nerves and I am about to throw this computer at a wall if I cannot get this fixed.
It's always allows me a different amount of time to edit before it saves it automatically. I am trying to rename over 1000 files on external/ internal hard drives so I can get the correct name for movies in plex/ iphoto. I know I can go into Get Info and edit the name in there, but that would take forever renaming a thousand files. It literally takes me 5 to 10 times just to rename one file. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this problem? I have also tried using the Apple BT keyboard and have the exact same results. Also completely random question, is there a way to disable the IR port on the MB so when I am controlling the Mac Min HTPC it doesn't keep messing with the MB by bringing up Frontrow, pausing/playing tracks? I literally have to cover the IR port with my finger just so I can use the remote on the mini.
Is there a way to select all the files I want to rename and then hit a button the OS will rename them all in sequence for me such as: file 1, file 2, file 3..... etc? Windows XP does this....
I have a folder with a TON of photos. I have a bunch of photos I want to put into that folder but a bunch of the filenames are the same. Normally with a few photos I would just rename the file but there's way too many.
Is there any way to rename the files or do something so I can copy the new photos into my photo folder without any overwriting going on?
I have a digital photo frame to see my pictures, but it only plays photos secuencially, it can't be set on "shuffle". So if I could rename the photos with random names, then the effect would be the same, as I would be seeing them in "shuffle".
I know automator can rename files, and there are many many apps that also rename, but I haven't found one that can give the files a random name!
I have a couple of mp3's that have the wrong name (same they are one song, but really another).
I have easily changed the name of the files, but notice when I click and select more info they still have the old, incorrect names (which will show up in the scrolling data on my stereo).
I can't for the life of me figure out how to change the "title" information so that it mirrors the name of the mp3.
I am looking for the solution to batch rename multiple avi files simply. In iphoto, I just select a bunch of image files and using the ctrl+Shift+CMD keyboard shortcut, I input the name something like 'boat_trip_kids' I get the files renamed instantly wiith or without the suffix of a number.Thing is, how to do for vdo files ?I read a totorial and then tried using automator to do this but I have to input the name_of_the_file in the script construction. That's ok for hundreds of files but I will have many names to use for naming of small groups of files and this won't be practical. Is there some way I can achieve this in automator?
Automator blows. I have worked for two days on this and can not make automator put a simple jpg image as a watermark on a selected bunch of PDF files and then save them as the same file name. This seems to be the consensus on the net too.
Any programs you can reccomend that would make this easy for me to do? I have to do over 500 files and there is no way I am doing this by hand.
I'm attempting to use Automator to rename picture files. I select "Make Sequential" and put the name in that I want. However, once everything is completed my pictures are not in the same order they were out of the camera. I like how my camera imports the photos in the order that I took them. Now when I look through my pictures my vacation is completely out of chronological order. How do can I set Automator so that this does not happen in the future?
