How does a new Apple user figure out how to save files to subfolders in Documents?

In mail, i can only save to Downloads or a folder on the same level. It won't let me choose a subfolder or create a folder like i could before. Same thing when i try to save a file. When i'm using Adobe CS3 applications i swich to the adobe dialog boxes but this seems so stupid.
This is a HUGE time waster for me. I deal with a projects that involve a great quantity of files that need a lot of folder organization. Is this something to do with stacks? Am i being required to think differently?
I am looking for a script to do the following:I have different files in various folders and subfolders that I wish to rename. So I need a script to search for files in all folders and subfolders of my external drive and find all files ending in .doc.Then I need each file to be renamed as "report.doc". (there is only one file per subfolder so there is no danger of having two files with the same name

When I drag-and-hold a file to a folder with the purpose of placing it into one of its subfolders, I can't go past the first folder: in other words, unlike Mavericks, where I could drag the file and open one folder after the other until I could just release my file into the final destination, since I installed Yosemite I can't do it any longer and when I place the dragged file over a subfolder all I see is a "+" sign, but the folder won't open. Is there a way to restore that functionality?

Problem:
I have a folder with numerous subfolders, each containing numerous files that i would like to batch unlock (vs tediously unlocking each individual folder).
failed attempts involve:
- tried the following terminal action: sudo chflags -R nouchg ( as suggested on this website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106237) but it did not work.
I did not try the other suggestions on the website because it started getting really complicated and i was afraid to do something that may cause damage/delete my files
- tried unlocking the folders and subfolders, however each individual file within the corresponding folder/subfolders remained locked
Partial but suboptimal solutions tried:
- i found a partial but not optimal solution to my problem on this site:
however, the option-command-I will only allow me to unlock files each subfolder at a time (as i need to actually highlight the files themselves).
is there a way where i could just unlock all the folder/subfolders/files within an entire directory in one fell swoop?
My system:
- the new MBP running Mac OS X 10.5.2
i am a new mac user and i apologize in advance if there is some simple solution to this problem that i have yet failed to discover,

Recently when trying to save utility bills from Safari (pdf files) I get a message saying that the file cannot be "Exported" although I am using the "Save As" command.I have recently upgraded to Lion, could this be responsible? I also cannot print off the bills even though they are displayed clearly on the screen.

I put my SD card in the slot and opens it as "NO NAME". It won't let me rename it or put files on it. It's format is FAT32. It is not locked.

I can't save files to my desktop. I have no problem saving the same file anywhere else. WHen I try through excel, for example, it tells me the file is read only. When I try to save it as a different file name, a pop up tells me I do not have permission to save to the desktop. The same issue occurs when I attempt to take a screen shot (default save to desktop)

Ive always been a PC user until recently when i purchased a macbook pro. I have an external hard drive that i used to back up all my files including word documents & mp3's etc. I now want to use the same hard drive to back up files from my macbook but i dont want to make a copy of the entire drive (like with time line) i just want to save individual files. When i go to do this, a light grey circle appears with a 'cross out' and i am unnable to copy/save the file. In the past (with PC) all i have had to do is drop and drag to perform this function.

I have booted the macbook pro using my desktop computer but I want to know if I can go in and transfer files over. Currently I am on the OS X Utilities page and I can't get any further (I don't know what to do from here). I have tried to repair the disk but it says that it can't repair the disk...am I out of luck for my unsaved files or is there anyway to get them?

When I right click to save a picture online, it doesn't give me the opportunity to save something as a JPEG. I instead have to save it as a preview and then export it to JPEG. This seems like something relatively new.

This week my mac pro started to become flaky. Apps that I use all the time, started having problems saving, then they started having problems opening files. I could drag and drop files on an app and they would open. Cmd+S would sometimes save, sometimes not. If I closed the window without saving, I'd get the warning prompt, select OK to save and the file would save. Printing started flaking. Page setup comes up with a blank dialog, with Printer settings pulldown blank. Trying to print, either nothing would happen or the app would crash. I have run disk verfy - everything checks out. I have repaired permissions, I have run techtool pro. Nothing works. I have done a Cmd-Opt click to start apps for a fresh prefs file. It seems to have started with one app and is showing up in others, mostly Adobe/Microsoft apps, but now Open Office, too. I've had and diagnosed many macs over the years, but this one's got me perplexed. I've got Sophos Antivirus and nothing has been detected..

Up to now it hasn't bothered me much, but today I wanted to download iBank 4 Quick Start Guide. When I clicked on the link for the guide, Safari went to a pdf page and displayed the first page of the pdf. When I selected "Save As" it gave me a name for the file and the download destination. When I said OK, I got this error: The document “iBank_4_Quick_Start.pdf” could not be exported as “iBank_4_Quick_Start”. This happens for every pdf page I try to download. I get an error every time. The only work around I've found has been to right click (control click) on the button that takes you to the pdf file and select "Save linked file to the desktop" Safari used to allow you do a "Save As" for all pdf's.

Im using xcode in c++ language and I am having trouble finding the place to save my txt file so the program would recognize it.
The program displays the cout inside the if so its clearly not finding the txt file.
I opened the finder window (back when I could) and scrolled over on HD X infinity. I don't know why I did it. I guess just to see how many times it would fold over. Well I held down the arrow and it went hyperspeed.. made a loud buzzing noise then crashed. I shut off the computer and ever since then I cant open finder. Desktop or any folders that I search for through spotlight. What I would like to do would be to save all my files. Most importantly garageband files, pictures and video, itunes. I've tried to use a usb and external hardrive but I cant properly insert the files into the drive. And my cd drive doesn't work so I cant insert the install disk. I do have another ibook g4 and I've been hunting for ways to remedy the situation. My goal is to get everything back to normal and save my files.

It seems as if Safari no longer wants to save files which I view in the activity window + double click but instead just open them in another tab. Does anyone know why this is happening? View 2 Replies View RelatedI have hopefully a question one of you can help me with. On my MacBook when I open a file - for example a zip file that has pictures in it that I receive in an e-mail. Until recently I would clik on the zip file to open it and get a "Opening Attachments .zip" box which is normal. I would then have the option to open the file (default is Stuffit Expander") or "Save File." I always click "Save File" and until recently the file, whether it's a zip file, or just a single file, would open on my DESKTOP. Well I must have changed something because they no longer are opening on my desktop...and I'm not sure where they are opening up and being stored. So long intro to hopefully easy question. Since the Opening Attachments box doesn't have an option to where that "Save" option puts that file, where can I go to find out where it's saving these files to?
