OS X V10.7 Lion :: Files Do Not Go To Trash When Deleted?
Apr 23, 2012
Whenever I delete a file, it is immediately deleted, regardless of type, size or location. I found the site below but I seem to be going in circles and the directions there don't seem to work for me. I have a Macbook Pro, 10.7.3, with an abundance of space. [URL]..

I have a MacPro (Intel), and I had my Music folder on a second (non-boot) internal drive. That drive was getting full, so I bought yet another internal drive to put in one of the other bays, thinking to copy the folders to the new, larger-capacity drive. So I bought a 2 Tb drive and transferred all my MOVIES to the new drive, but then went back and deleted my MUSIC folder and emptied the trash. I knew immediately that I'd made a mistake.
I haven't written anything to that drive whatsoever from that moment on, so absolutely nothing should have been over-written. I have plenty of room on the new drive to which I can recover the deleted files. Unfortunately the folder/directory was very large, with over 20,000 files, mostly of podcasts/spoken word stuff, much of which is no longer available or would represent thousands of hours of download time, plus all my digitized folk music from long out-of-print LP records.
You'd think I'd be more responsible with >600 Gb of data! However, fortunately the drive is in good working order, it just requires a good recovery strategy. I know that services that do recovery charge a fortune, and because I haven't written anything to that drive and it still mounts without problems, I'm hoping I can do this myself with a good data recovery software package. Because I am talking about literally thousands of files, it is just too painful to think about editing all the metadata about each file (name, artist, album, etc.), and ideally I would like to recover the files and the file structure so podcasts are recovered as such, etc.
Is this at all possible?
If so, what are the relative merits of File Salvage vs. Data Rescue vs. Kernel for Macintosh (Nucleus Data Recovery) vs. VirtualLab Data Recovery vs. Stellar Phoenix? Is there something better than these--these are the only ones I found on a Web search. Are there any head-to-head reviews of which someone is aware?

I had two folders for School. I attend a University so you can imagine those were very full. I put one in the trash thinking I could get rid of it and then proceeded to empty the trash. When I did the other one deleted too. So now I have no school folder which was filled with many things I need. How do I get these back after I deleted them out of the trash? I haven't done anything yet after deleting them accidentally.

Using an imac & external hard drive. When I delete files from the external hard drive, they are "permanently deleted" and not sent to trash. I'd like them to go to trash in case I make a mistake.

I downloaded some icons straight onto my Sony Microvault 1GB USB Drive and when I try to delete them it says they're "in use". When I disconnect the drive my Trash is empty, but whenever I plug it in these files appear again. I tried to Option+Empty Trash, Secure Empty Trash, and all that stuff but it won't allow it because the files are "in use".

When you delete something but change your mind, and the app is still in the trash bin, how can I restore back to its location with all the components? I know I can simply drag the main app to my application folder but what about the other components?

On my MacBook, when I delete a file in the Downloads folder, it says that it will go immediately and for some reason it doesn't go to Trash. On my iMac, the behaviour is as I expect, it goes to Trash and I can undo it. Is there a way to change it on the MacBook so it goes to Trash? I'm using 10.6.3.

I accidentally deleted my Quickens files and Emptied the Trash. Now I'm trying to recover it using Data Rescue II, I found the folder Documents/Quicken, but there is just one file. When I recover it, Quicken program won't open it - Can't load the file.
Where else could Quicken files be? I'm looking for .qdfm file format, but still can't find anything else.
Could somebody advise what else I could try to find those deleted files?

When I place a file in trash I get a warning that the file will be deleted if I continue. I just want to place files there and delete them later. I tried to fix the problem by using terminal and typing:
$ rm -rf ~/.Trash/mkdir ~/.Trash/
But when I try to use mkdir I get a permission denied.

The first thing I did was go to the Disk Utility myself and verify/repair all my permissions - it repaired everything it wanted to but it failed to stop the trash problem. My theory is that, previous to this incident when I was using an App from the App Store called DaisyDisk I cleaned out 10GB worth of data that I considered unnecessary. It seems I was a little off with that thought, because I think I deleted my trash directory itself. Â Â
So online here I found an answered question to someone who committed the same careless deletion act that I did. The only problem is, I couldn't completely follow their instructions because however I may have screwed up, I did it worse than they did.I would appreciate any help anyone could have to offer. I have done everything I could think of and one or two things that other people have thought of.

My problem is that I can't drag a file to the trash. When I try to delete a file by right-clicking and choose "move to trash" I get a message telling me that the item will be deleted permanently and that I cannot undo this action. In other words it is possible to delete a file permanently, but I would like to have the option to move them to the trash first. I have recently tried to partition the internal hard-drive using Boot Camp, however unsuccessfully. I don't know if the two are related. I have Macbook 13,3" early 2010 with the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.4.

My setup is a 27" C2D iMac, 4GB RAM, running SL, all latest updates. iTunes is latest version with the library hosted on an external Drobo connected via FW800. I have no iPods plugged in just now and have disabled automatic sync with my ATV so I know there shouldn't be any tasks running within iTunes itself.
This morning I get a message about a corrupt iTunes library. I restored the file from a backup and after a long time referencing the corresponding .xml file, iTunes loaded up. 95% of the library was fine, but for some reason, it had lost some files, leaving me with exclamation marks scattered around the place. If I manually locate the file, that solves the problem, so while its a pain, I can sort it out, or I guess the new equivalent of consolidate library should clear it up.
Anyway, for the last few hours, iTunes is very slow. Rest of the machine is fine and its not hogging resources according to activity monitor, but its clearly doing something which is making it appear to be un-responding. When I switch to it, it takes a while to appear, then the spinning beach ball, then maybe 30 seconds to a minute later, it becomes active for a short time before becoming unresponsive again.

Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X? Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least. Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

Emptied trash, but need to get some notes back. Did a scan with minitool Mac data recovery, but with so much available for recovery, I'd like to be able to identify. What partition my notes would be in and what the file would look like. I have used recovery software, but am unsure how to identify my deleted (from trash) notes.

I was trying to delete one file , so i dragged to trash, then all of a sudden I realize my entire Drobo (3TB Huge) was highlighted and deleting to my trash! So now I have a trash folder full all my Drobo's content and I can't figure out how to get it all back to "put back"! I'm afraid that I am going to inadvertently empty trash and lose my entire Drobo's contents! I need to figure out how to undo or put back ... come on Apple. Why'd you make this so difficult?
