OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Shows Different Available Space Than Finder?
Apr 10, 2012
I just reinstalled Lion from a fresh harddrive. I did not use the migration asistance to pull files over to the new drive, I selested files and dragged them over, So not to fill the drive with things I dont need....
So I "Get info" on the main harddrive it shows Which is crazy! Then I use Disk Invintory and it shows:
and Disk Untility shows:
Why the difference? Simple question and How do I free up space? I'm also trying to back up using time capsule*

The Finder window shows that I have 302GB of harddrive space remaining, out of 500GB. The Activity Monitor and Disk Utility show I have 240GB space remaining, and my System Profiler shows I have 239GB remaining. I just deleted a bunch of old TV shows off of iTunes (about 40GB worth) to open up some space, but only the Finder changed (up to 302GB from 260GB) but the Activity Monitor, Disk Utility, and System Profiler haven't changed.
Now, I'll assume the Finder is showing the correct amount of space, but I'm wondering why the other utilites are showing the incorrent amount of space. I have a feeling maybe something was screwed up when I created a 50GB Windows 7 partition through Boot Camp a couple months ago.
I've attempted to Repair Disk through the Disk Utility and it says everything looks fine. Any solutions to this minor inconvenience? Or at least an answer as to why this is happening?

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.
The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.
If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.
I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

i have this strange issue that occured just out of nowhere without me (knowingly) having contributed anything to it.yesterday i launched my iMac and my external firewire drive wasn't showing up in neither the finder nor on the desktop. i instantly thought about a hard drive crash, but soon tried other things to evaluate (or not) my guess.
for instance, i unplugged the drive waited a few minutes before i plugged it in again. since this iomega drive is also equipped with a regular usb port i also switched cables and tried connecting it via the iMac usb sockets as well as via an usb hub without any luck. the drive still won't show up. so i launched the Disk Utility, to see if the drive needs some checking/repairing, but to my surprise it wasn't showing in Disk Utility either.
thus far i only considered this to be an issue with only this particular external drive, but when i eventually switched on a 2nd external drive (this time an usb drive i use for Time Machine) that drive also refused to show up in either the Finder or the Disk Utility app.
curious as i was, i then fired up a 3rd and 4th external drive and now had all 4 drives running at the same time. none of which were showing up, just as if they weren't even connected with the iMac.
this strikes me as more than odd. i've heard about hard drive failures and crashes. they just occur over time. maybe and under some very strange coincidences it is possible that two external hard drives quit their jobs at the very same time, but seriously .... 4 of them?? i hardly think so.
well, maybe it's the iMac's usb/firewire controller that's causing the trouble, i thought. but then again, my other connected devices (iPhone, iPad, Printer, Scanner, eyeTV) are functioning and get detected just fine as far as i can tell.
i have no idea what's going on. i dismiss the idea of 4 external drives having crashed all at the same time just as much as i don't think that the iMac's usb/firewire controller has got any issues. re-formatting any of the 4 drives is out of the question and even if i'd consider such desperate measures, the Disk Utility wouldn't let me re-format anything anyhow, because the drives aren't listed there. i wish i could just use my Time Machine to resolve the issue but, as i mentioned earlier, i can't access the Time Machine because it also won't show up.

The available HD space shown at the bottom of the finder window shows 650 gb and the "get Info" window for the HD shows the same. If i look at the HD in "Disk Utility" or in "System Report" from "About this Mac", it shows 490 gb, which is what it should be by my calculations. I have installed a new SSHD a few weeks ago but it showed the correct available HD space in all locations at that time. Just the other day i noticed the higher available number at the bottom of the finder window, Have performed a "disk repair" and "permissions repair" with no effect. Running OS 10.9 mavericks on a macbook late 08. 8GB ram and 750 gb SSHD.

I installed SL two days ago and my LaCie firewire external has been working fine. i put it to sleep last night, and when I woke it up today, I got the warning telling me that I had disconnected it improperly (Which I hadn't, because the computer was asleep and the drive never was turned off). This has happened before and I usually am able to shut it off then turn it on again. But this time it won't mount. It shoes up in Disk Utility and System Profiler, but not in the Finder.I have tried switching firewire ports and restarting but to no avail.

I am using a Mac Mini, Which is having a capacity of 74.2 GB. Hardly I made use of 15 or 16 GB of that. As I felt some slowness, I tried running "Disk Utility". Recently I found that the free space is only 2.4GB, instead of around 55GB..
Disk Utility is showing
USED SPACE :71.8GB
If i am calculating all folders in "Machintosh HD" (Application, Library,System, etc..), it wil come around 14-15 GB only.

i was Erasing Free Space in Disk Utility, after a while I needed to Force Quit another program but I mistakenly quit Disk Utility and now it says I only have 3.1 GB space available when it should be around 270 GB available. I'm sure Disk Utility said it was 'Creating Temporary File' at this time this happened.
I'm now also getting a message which states I need to clear out space on my start up disk.

I just ran the Erase Free Space thinking it would help me with a bootcamp issue.
I had 70Gb free and I stopped it when I noticed i had 30 Gb free left. So I just lost 40 Gb of hard drive space. What happened? is there anyway of recovering it or did I just make a huge mistake.

I recently tried installing Ubuntu on my MBP. After never really using it, I deleted it and removed all the partitions. My problem is that there is still some 'empty space' (about 5 GB worth) that I cannot re-add to the main HD's partition. The space is not a partition of it's own, I can resize the partition box down to it in Disk Utility, but I get an error.
The error message is...
Partition Failed
Partition failed with the error:
Mediakit reports the partition (map) to small.
While it's not a big issue (314 out of 319 GB)

I just used Disk Utility to make a backup of a MBA (65GB) onto a 500GB external drive (Restore from internal HDD to external HDD). I then reformatted the internal hard disk and proceeded to restore my backup (external HDD to internal HDD). I soon received an error message stating "Restore Failure - not enough space". I guess that means Disk Utility backups are a one-way operation, since you can't restore from a larger drive to a smaller one? Is there something I am overlooking? I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the job, but I'm wondering how (if?) restoring from a larger backup drive is possible using Disk Utility?

I tried yesterday to make a Boot Camp partition on my MacBook Pro 17"s 500GB hard drive, but something seems to have gone wrong while installing Windows 7. And the new partition was inaccessible from Disk Utility, so I deleted it by booting from the Windows 7 disk. But now the unallocated space from the deleted partition isn't showing up in disk utility, and I have now idea how to remerge it with my main Snow Leopard partition.

I often add very large files to my system before compressing them, sending them to clients, and then deleting them. This process leaves me constantly thinking about how much disk space I have free. Disk Utility, and an Apple approved app called DaisyDisk (space visualization) typically help me accompish this. Sadly, as of this week I seem to have a problem. When I went and looked the other day Disk U was telling me that 250gb of my 320gb drive is in use. This seemed high to me, but to be safe I thought I'd delete some files I didn't need. After deleting a bunch of videos, and a backup of my Main Identity (19gb) from my system, I'd assumed I had freed up about 24gb, but when I went back into Disk U it was still showing the same 250gb in use. Yes I rebooted my system, and made sure the trash was empty.
As I investigated further I did a get info on all 6 folders on the MacHD and they added up to about 170gb. That seemed more realistic, so I did a get info on my MacHD and again it showed the same thing 170 in use and 148.something available. Note: I have no partitions on this drive. But yet, still when I go to Disk U it seemed to be stuck at only 64gb free. Today when I went and looked again I am still seeing the same amount in use and free on the MacHD get info, but on Disk U now I am seeing 108 free and 211 in use. Why the difference? I would think Get Info was pulling from the same place as the mac disk utility.

Trying to resize and existing volume using disk utility on Leopard. Have a 1TB internal Drive with 1 Partition (extended Journal), not a boot drive this is just for data, now want to add another partition (2 Volumes), in effect shrinking the size of the original so I have 2 equal sizes.
So Far I have used 450GB, so there should be enough room to do this right? Although when I go through the process, I get the message 'not enough space on drive'.

Having trouble with my backup drive. It's a 1TB WD My Passport Ultra.
The drive mounts in Finder, but is extremely slow. In Disk Utility, the drive shows the correct disk space usage and number of files; but in Finder it only shows the folders/files at the root level of the drive, and each has a size of zero bytes with no items:
What is happening? How can I access the data (it's obviously still there if DU shows the files) and (possibly) fix this?

I have a JVC Everio HD camcorder and am having some trouble importing the video. This morning, the camcorder was recognized by Finder and I could enter and view the files. However, the files are in .MOD/MP4 format so they would not import directly into iMovie.
This afternoon, I found a tutorial on how to convert the files so plugged my camcorder in again, only to find that Finder is no longer acknowledging it. It is recognized in iPhoto and Disk Utility.

I purchased a black MacBook (10.4.11) last may and it's my first Mac. Thus far, I have only had one problem and that is that my I can't see my Motorola Z6m in finder or disk utility (but it is in system profiler). I also do not see it in Terminal under /Volumes. Inside the phone is a 2GB Verbatim microSD card that works fine in my card reader on the same machine. On a side note, bluetooth works fine.
The phone works as expected in the PCs I've tried it in, including a parallels vm running XP on the MacBook (I don't have access to any other Macs) which led me to believe it was a formatting issue, but then the card shouldn't work in the card reader either and it should still show up in disk utitlity. Am I not correct?
I have tried rebooting, unplugging/replugging the device, removing the battery, and reinstalling OS X (I wanted to do it to get rid of Unsanity's APE anyways). I have plugged it into either port on the MacBook with the same result. I have also emailed motorola tech support. Additionally, I have done quite a bit of googling and have found other people with the same issue, but none of the suggestions have worked for me or were otherwise unworkable (some suggested downgrading to 10.4.9).
I have also heard of trying it in a powered usb hub, but the thing is, why does it work through the virtual machine if a powered hub is required? Or am I missing something in this?

Disk Utility Crashed whilst creating a Partition, and I now have ~100GB missing, which was the amount I had allocated to the new partition.
The new partition didn't get created, and I now have 100GB missing from the Hard drive. I have a 1TB hard drive, and when I go to Disk Utility, it says: Capacity : 999.35 GB (999,345,127,424 Bytes)Available : 586.1 GB (586,103,844,864 Bytes)Used : 310.52 GB (310,524,317,696 Bytes)
Which adds up to about ~900GB.
I tried Repairing Disk in Disk Utility, booting into Recovery Mode and Repairing Disk there, but neither made a difference.

I have purchased a Seagate 500gb 2.5 inch laptop hard drive to replace my feeble 120gb drive. I am trying to set up this drive using carbon copy cloner before changing it over, I'm using an external enclosure for this. The problem I'm having is the hard drive isn't recognized at all.
It's not showing up in finder or disk utility so I don't know how to format the drive.
I'm using Leopard 10.5.6
The instructions that cam with the enclosure mention setting the hard drive to function in master mode, what does this mean? I don't want to go to all the effort of changing the hard drive if there's some sort of problem, and I would rather clone my drive before removing it too.
