I would like to be able to open files that I've worked on in Windows and be able to write back to the same disk. Is this possible? What do I need to do to make this possible?

I want to copy files from my old PowerBook G4 (12") to my self-built Windows PC. I've connected the PB to my tower's Firewire PCI card, put the PB in target disk mode, and Windows prompts me with the found new hardware wizard. After the wizard finished, I did not see my PB in My Computer. It does not show up in Disk Management, either. It does appear in the Safely Remove Hardware window as "UNKNOWN MODEL AND VENDOR IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device", and in the Device Manager as "SBP2 Compliant IEEE 1394 device". How can I get this to show up so I can backup my old files?

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)

I'm very shocked about what happened today. I convinced my friend to get a macbook pro since he could run windows and mac (and at the same time through vmware fusion) so he went out and got a 17" macbook pro (don't post about how he should have waited for the January update cause already told him and he didn't care). Well he bought a vista upgrade installation dvd through the university of texas and it worked fine with bootcamp.
He purchased it for $34 and had no previous version of xp or any other version of windows for that matter and the upgrade dvd worked fine with the boot camp installation. Is the upgrade version he got through ut different than the standard retail vista ultimate upgrade dvd? All we did was select clean install of windows operating system as the upgrade selection was grayed out since there was no previous version of windows. Then clicked on advanced, formatted bootcamp created disk, and installed

My Mac Book Pro doesn't start. when I press the start button It chimes, apple logo, line loading and turns off. Once and again. I tried the Comand-option-P-R and nothing. Tried a lot of tricks I found online and nothing. Finally -And Im not sure how, I think it was the Comand-R opened the Disk Utility and could hit the repair the disk, It said that It couldn't repair -I have almost full capacity 499GB used- but cant remove files since I cant start the computer. Disk Utility told me to Back up Files and Restore -meaning it will wipe out the data, but i will have it on my back up- How do I back up using external hard drive.

Recently I purchased an external hard disk, to put all of my pictures of my baby due to space limitations on my internal laptop drive. Since my Canon camera 10 megapixel pictures take up a ton of space this was occurring at an alarming rate. My intention was also to back up to DVD but never got to it. This is both a comment and a question.
Now said baby, is getting really good at pulling cords etc. He managed to do this on the external drive firewire cable. As far as i know the drive was not in the process of actually writing. However, after a few minutes and trying to re-plug the drive the OS crashed with a Grey Screen of Death hardware error that tells you that you need to push the power button..
This apparently corrupted the drive's directory. Upon reboot the drive would not mount. Since there were time machine backups on the drive too Diskwarrior was not able to reconstruct the drive in the built in memory available on the computer. Time machine stores millions of files and Diskwarrior apparently wants to keep it all in memory at once. Since my computer has 2GB you would hope that would be enough but apparently not. So that failed. Other utilities seemed to be able to find the files but not restore the directory. I also took it to the apple store they were not able to recover it.
I have to say this is extremely distressing, and hard to believe that a simple accident like this could cost the loss of thousands of pictures. I did send it to a rescue company but that was expensive but I think apple needs to do something about this situation.
On Windows there is a way to disable the write cache for external drives. This is not available for Mac OS X. This would prevent this rather common occurrence of a plug accidentally becoming disengaged when the drive is not in the process of writing. This reduces the odds but I still think apple, in order to become clearly superior, needs a better solution.
I know Apple has experimented with ZFS would this not eliminate this possibility of this kind of disaster? Is this in Snow Leopard desktop? I know they are thinking this is a business customer focused technology but clearly if it can eliminate this kind of thing then I think it is extremely useful to their non server customers. Perhaps there are other ways of dealing with this issue but ZFS is designed to deal with these issues. HFS+ is extremely fragile to disk corruption.
I know my situation is not that uncommon and this is not the first time this has happened to me with an external drive. You would think I had learned. I hate to think of how many other people have had the same thing happen to them.

My dear baby, a 3 year old macbook pro died last week (way to young). Fried logicboard. Apple wants 1.550 dollars to fix it, so I guess it is gone for good.
My question is, is it possible to take out the harddisk, put it in an external enclosure and plug it in to another mac to get the files?? If so, what enclosure should I buy?It is a summer 2007 macbook pro.

I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.
Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.
Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.
I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files. I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available.

I am trying to open some old files back from when I used Mac OS 7.5, 8.0, 9.0. The files in question were saved using Disk Doubler (from FIfth generation Systems) to compress them. I must ask first, am I correct in assuming that file type of DDAP and DDFL are Disk Doubler files? I'm trying to reopen some of those files. According to Alladyn Systems web site, StuffIt Expander is supposed to open Disk Doubler files. However, if I drag one of the DD files onto StuffIt Expander I get the following message: The file Insert name here does not appear to be compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of the file from the sender or provider of the file.

All of a sudden my computer (imac, 10.4.11) won't let me open images downloaded from digital cameras (I've tried several - so it's not the cameras). I get the following error - "Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize." Also the same basic error when using Photoshop and Fireworks. I can open files still on the camera, or saved to a CD - just not anything dragged to the desktop. I can still open pictures which had been previously saved - but nothing new. I ran the Repair Disk utility, which found and apparently fixed an Illegal Name error on the hard drive, but the problem still persists.

My macbook pro was stolen a few days ago. I plan on getting a replacement in the near future, but I don't think the current macbook pros are worth it at their prices... I don't know when an update is coming (like everyone else). I may have jumped the gun and bought a windows laptop if all my files weren't saved via time machine.
Is there anyway to get my stuff off time machine and onto windows short of buying a second mac and restoring to and then transfering off to windows laptop?

I'm using a 2GHz PowerPC G5, OS X 10.4.11, with 1 GB on one dimm. I cannot open ANY .dmg files. I have tried clicking the image, and also on a clean download used "open with" each time I received the following message The following disk image failed to mount
Reason: Device not configured
I have followed the instructions in this thread:- Disk image failed to mount: Device not configured.
Firstly Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Click on "Macintosh HD" in the left column and then press the "Repair Disk Permissions" button.
Delete the file called /System/Library/Extension.kextcache
Delete the folder called /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches/
Restart
That made no difference. I then tried bobw's advice here Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed" Panther - Disk Image "mounting Failed". That made no difference. I have since gone on to justanswer.com and the advice I received was to do an archive and install and then a full combo update.

I used to be able to drag files over to my storage drive from Windows 7, but I'm unable to do it now, I have Boot Camp 3.1 installed and the latest update for it. If I right click in the storage drive and select New Folder it says Destination Access Denied, and has the buttons Continue / Skip / Cancel. When I click Continue, it shows the same dialog but it says You need permission to perform this action and the buttons Try Again or Cancel, I've repeatedly clicked Try Again and it does nothing.

I'm trying to create a partition for Windows, but I'm getting the message "disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." A poster in another thread concerning this problem said that to create a partition, Bootcamp needs continuous space or something. I do have many large files, and I had up to 3 GB free out of 180 a few minutes ago until I deleted some files to get about 58 GB. I tried partitioning with 45 GB and got the error message. I also tried lower numbers, but nothing worked. I'm assuming it's because my files are fragmented. Then I looked up defragment in the forums and found that many people are against it whether it's because it "slows down the computer" or "it is unnecessary." Now I'm in a bind because I don't want to reinstall my OS, but now I'm hearing I shouldn't defrag either.

I'm trying to re-partition (i removed the first one so i could make it bigger). When i try and make a 100gb partition through bootcamp, after working for an hour, it says this:
Quote:
The disk cannot be partitioned because some files can not be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS X Extended (Journal) volume. Restore your information to the disc and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
What does this mean and how do i do this? I opened disk utility and can't work it out.

I need serious help. I've tried just about everything I've read online. When I try to run iTunes, it claims that iTunes is on a locked disk or that I don't have write permissions. I've went into the secutiry tab and such and gave myself full control, yet it still isn't working. It also won't let me unclick the "Read Only" box. I'm on Windows 7.
