on my keyboard, I have assigned F5 to show me the desktop and F6 to show the dashboard. Both F5 and F6 were set to zoom in & out before. F6 works fine, nothing interferring, but F5 doesn't work. When I press F5, nothing happens.Â
I did this through System Preferences/Mission Control and then checked one again through System Preferences/Keyboard/Mission Control.Â

Back in the days I used a PC, I used to be able to assign custom quick phrases (like "Sincerely, Emily") as a keyboard shortcut. For instance I'd assign my phrase to F3 or something...and then voila!!! I could insert commonly typed phrases into my emails or word processing. SO NICE! And I miss that. Anyone seen this feature in Mac Mail?

In the dock, when you click on an app and hold it (or right-click) you can go to options and then assign on which desktop this particular app should open. You can choose on all desktops (which will make the app follow you, no matter to which desktop you are switch), you can choose on the desktop you are now on and you can choose none.But how do you choose several desktops? Is that even possible? Because I don't think so.I am using the Logic arrange window and would like to have the Mixer on a different desktop.

Trying to set up a second monitor, which I want to use as my "universal communication dashboard" across all of my spaces.In other words, I want to run a bunch of applications there which should appear regardless of which space I'm on. To do this I know that I just right click the application and select "Assign To: All Desktops" but for whatever reason only one of the applications follows me from screen to screen, even if I have all three selected.All three applications are set to start on login.This seems like a blatant bug in Lion and I would love advice on how to fix it, or how to nag Apple until it gets fixed.

If you open Spotlight using Ctrl+F, you get an interface for advanced queries. Under "Kind", you can select "Other..." and Spotlight opens a list of "search attributes". It's a long list but of course not complete. Question: is there a way to add custom metadata attributes that can be read by Spotlight? I am willing to get my hands dirty with plists and such, or perhaps there is some freeware add-on that can facilitate this?Â

2. I can attach the value "bar" to the metadata attribute "foo", e.g. for the file "myFile.txt".Â
3. I can write an AppleScript that takes a file name as a parameter and returns the value of the "foo" attribute. I.e., I give it "myFile.txt" and I get "bar" as the result.Â
4. I can use spotlight to search for "bar" and get all files with this metadata.Â

I'd like to be able to view a folder's info and have the the lockpad remain unlocked. This is so I can change permissions much faster.I am not having the easiest time with the custom access panel, because I have to reopen it multiple times so be able to get the settings correct.For instance, I tried adding a user but it would not show up so I closed the Info window and reopened it. The user finally showed up, but then I had to `unlock` this to make further changes. This is when keeping it unlocked would make things easier for my privileges.

I created a stationery in Mail & saved it as such. The stationery is saved under the custom area and consist of mostly text and then some basic graphics at the end of the message (my fiance e-mail signature w/a picture). When I select a new message and then expand the stationary section, I go to custom and select my saved stationary (in the preview it looks like what I saved) by double clicking but nothing happens - I have also tried clicking and dragging - copy and paste, etc. The text & graphics do not appear in my new e-mail.
I have tried deleting and re-creating the stationary as well as restarting Mail & my computer on multiple occasions but nothing seems to work. All of the other pre-installed stationary seem to work just fine. What I am trying to do is set up premade letters that I e-mail to people all the time, I am tired of typing the same e-mail over and over again. I have a dozen or so that I want to type up and save and then just select the appropriate one for my client, type in their name and other minor changes to make it 'customized' to them and click send.....

I have somehow added the word "indadvertedly" to my dictionary. This is not a word in any known language. I have tried opening in TextEdit, Mail, and Word. I have tried right-clicking and choosing "Unlearn." Unlearn is not an option. I have tried opening Library-Spelling and editing the contained file (dynamic-text.dat) but this is not the spelling dictionary file and only contains a jumble of almost random letters. It is the only file in that folder. How to remove a custom word from the dictionary? I feel like it really shouldn't be this hard.

I used to use ResEdit back int he day - and have used various tools on Mac and Windows to change icons. BUt I am stuggling with a default custom icon option for Mac OS X. Â I have a set of farily simply icons for use with a number of file types that I use a lot - csv, psl, pti, tp3, xml, cfr, and others and I would like to always have newly created files get the custom icon. Â
Ideally this would be based on the extension - and they are not all from the same app. Â I am not afraid to use the terminal or edit package contents. Although some of them are windows apps - and I already have a custom set in the virtual machine. Â Some of the solutions I have seen out there such as Candy Bar seem to be only for application and folder settings. Â In a couple cases - such as the .cfr and .pti - the apps do not have an open method where you can double click on the file and have it open - so I woudl be okay with something like reprogramming TextEdit to have the necessary icons and plist updates. Although when I tried to edit the plist file in TextEdit - all I did was render TextEdit unusable. Â
when I create 30 to 40 files ( a group of 5 differnet file types for each option ) to have icons that help me determine which ones I need to run a macro against - and which to send the customer - and which to upload to the vendor - etc. Â Also missing the colorful icons in the sidebar and iTunes - as well an Unsanity Haxies?

In Photo Booth you can add custom backdrops however I am unable to do so with my new macbook pro.In photo booth if you click on effects and then click the box on the farthest right. Normally you should be able to drag and drop pictures for custom backdrops. It worked before on my old macbook w/ snow leopard. Unfortunately, Apple has very lousy documentation support for Photo Booth.

I've been using a custom login background tile by the usual method; replacing NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png in System-->Library-->Frameworks-->AppKit.framework-->Versions-->C-->Resources. After the 10.7.4 update, my custom tile is still in the correct place, but the system is displaying the stock login .

I don't like the way that finder arranges my files and folders. I have tried all the arrangements and none of them "flow" for me. What I would like to do is to be able to put my files / folders where I want them. I like to group similar folders together and put the most important files/folders at the top. Now this isn't an exhaustive list of how I want to arrange them. Its more about where my eyes go and what I want to see. I am a new mac user so maybe this is a really simple fix that I don't know about.Â

I recently updated my MB to OSX Lion 10.7.4. I had to re-apply my custom menu bar and icons (as usual), but the first thing I noticed was that the login window was back to that disgusting linen texture.I thought the update just replaced the file, (didn't happen before), so I went to /System/Library/Frameworks/Appkit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/NsTexturedFull ScreenBackgroundColor.png. And then the file was the same, my previous login window.
So the question is: Where is the new login screen texture stored? I can change the mission control background, but no amount of goolging or anything provides accurate and working information to replace the login screen on 10.7.4. Why would Apple break this all of a sudden? The worse case scenario would be that Apple decided to troll and draw the login screen programmatically. Which should never be the case...

I have Lion and the old fax program I was using (PageSender), which will not upgrade for use with Lion. I am going back to using the built-in fax option that Mac has in the Printer functions. Is there a way to create and use a custom fa cover sheet? Or am I relegated to jus the simple text the printer window opens with? And, ues, I do need to have a fax - no everyone, especially the older folks that are clients for our business, are using email, or even using computers. That means to service all of my clients, I must fax.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system crashed and it took be a day and a half to get it working again: Lion wouldn't reinstall from the DVD, from the internet or from the Lion USB stick I made. Finally I pulled out all the drives and put in only a Lion drive I had set aside as a safety. This worked. My main system drive and the Time Machine drive display a little lock icon and when I open Info, their permissions are all listed as "custom." Worse, when I try to change them, I can't. All my data is on those drives and Lion won't even let me open them to transfer files. How do I change the permissions?

I'm not sure if it is possible to do this for all applications...If it's not, I would just want to use them in Firefox. I tried system preferences > keyboard and mouse > keyboard shortcuts...but had no luck..I don't know what menu command to enter when I create my own shortcut..I can't find page up or down in the menu for Firefox?
View 8 Replies View RelatedHad to reinstall 10.6.2 on IMac after erasing disk for an earlier problem with Adobe CS4 installation. The Adobe Tech Support could offer no help with all log files submitted and as a last resort suggested I erase the internal drive and reinstall system and applications. It worked. But: Two problems encountered so far are : Inability to assign F13 key "to look up dictionary" (default being command -control-D) and the F11 and F12 keys no longer control sound volume as they all did before the reinstallation. I am unable to assign the keys in the System Preferences as suggested by Apple.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI spent at least 30 minutes struggling with my new computer because the path name of my macros had changed. Turns out, you must manually change every item in your Excel palettes that calls a macro. That's easy, you control click on the palette icon, select 'assign macro', and choose the macro.
But although that command was not greyed-out, when I selected it, nothing would happen. There was no error message.
I found no solutions on the internet, and in the course of the 30 minutes, tried various desperate things involving new taskbars, searching for mysterious excel.xlb files, VBA scripts to build taskbars. In the course of that, I broke a bunch of things on the palette. But I found the solution, and joined this group, just so I could tell the world.

I was first going to post this on the Community boards since this is more a geek opinion thing and not a technical thing but I'm putting it here b/c I noticed the Mac OCD thing here, too. Okay, so every once in a while, I decide that some aspect of my interaction with the UI is inefficient and annoying. Usually, its a very minor issue and my attempts to be less inefficient end up becoming ridiculous time wasters. Like my latest attempt to retrain my brain for what I think is "efficient" hot corner assignments:
Upper Left: Show Desktop
Upper Right: All Windows
Lower Left: Dashboard
Lower Right: Spaces
Here's the way I figure it. Show Desktop is the one function that leaves the almost all elements of the UI intact, particularly the menu bar. For me, the most inadvertent activation of hot corner elements is the upper left, because that has the menu elements I reach for most often. With Show Desktop, this matters much less. Spaces and All Windows need to be in adjacent corners for quicker consecutive activation because I use them in combo to move stuff between spaces and applications. The distance between top and bottom is shorter than left and right so these go on the right side. Which leaves Dashboard on the lower left which is good because there's nothing in the lower right corner I reach for on a constant basis. Dashboard widgets are arranged so all of my drag and drop widgets are on the LL corner. Anyway, I've been driving myself nuts with this arrangement because I'm so used to my old assignments that I keep hitting the wrong corners. How long till I get used to it?
I was just wondering if there is an application of OS X that allows non-multi-touch Macbooks to make your own gesture on your trackpad and assign them to a command of your choice. Ex. I want every time I make a circle on my trackpad for Expose to come up. I know that Multiclutch exists for Multi-touch Macs but is there an app for this on older Macs?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an older Mac Pro with 16 GBs of RAM and I'm trying to get Lightroom 3 to stop running ridicualously slow. I've checked the activity monitor and with just a browser & LR3 running I have just over 10 GBs of Free memory. LR3 is using 1.72 GBs. Back in the day you could allocate RAM to a program like photoshop so it wasn't such a dog. Is there anyway to do this in MAC OS X?

I could easily do it MS Office 08, where I would assign such keystrokes as Alt + Right for the "⇒" symbol but in pages it's not that simple. Right now, I essentially have to goto edit/special characters and insert each symbol in manually when I need it (Which is obviously time consuming for no reason)
