OS X V10.7 Lion :: Keep Custom Sharing Permissions Unlocked?

Mar 17, 2012

I'd like to be able to view a folder's info and have the the lockpad remain unlocked. This is so I can change permissions much faster.I am not having the easiest time with the custom access panel, because I have to reopen it multiple times so be able to get the settings correct. For instance, I tried adding a user but it would not show up so I closed the Info window and reopened it. The user finally showed up, but then I had to `unlock` this to make further changes. This is when keeping it unlocked would make things easier for my privileges.

MacBook Air :: Sharing Folder Under System Preferences Frozen - Padlock Unlocked

Mar 12, 2012

I have a Mac Book Air running 10.7.3. The Sharing Folder under system preferences is frozen. The padlock is unlocked. How do I unfreeze the sharing folder so that I can click on any item in this folder? The sharing folder freezes every time I open it - so you cannot select anything in the sharing folder.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing And Permissions In Finder - No Privileges Info

Jun 14, 2012

I am using a Mac Mini (mid-2011) running Lion Server 10.7.4. I have noticed lately that when I check files the Sharing & Permissions portion using Get Info on my files I find that there are two lines for each user on my computer. The first set of lines says Read & Write which I actually selected. The second set of lines says Custom. When I check I have the list Read & Write, Read, Custom. When I try to change Custom I cam select new option No Privileges Info. For the other users I am able to delete the extra line once I select No Privileges Info.

However even though I have more than one line I cannot delete the extra line for the main user. I will try and delete the extra line for the main user logged in as someone else that has what I have defined as admin privileges (reason I have more than one user). This really concerns me because this issue is causing problems with me adding or removing files as needed in the terminal. When I try I get this funky error:
"Dubious permissions on file (skipping): filename with duplicate entries for a user."
This is happening more and more even though I am not changing the file permissions that I am aware of.

I have screwed up my permissions on 2 of my external drives, very important info on both. The disk icons have a small lock in the corner and I cannot read or write to them. Get info brings up a permissions window that says "Custom" where the read write should be. It will not let me change these.

Intel Mac :: Sharing Permissions On External Drive?

Mar 21, 2012

I'm having trouble setting the sharing priveleges on an external drive connected to my mac with snow leopard. My Drive is an external NTFS formatted drive.  I can share the drive across the wifi network just fine if I have the guest account turned on, but I want to restrict access to certain folders using "sharing only" user accounts.I want to use SMB sharing. What I have is a folder called Movies that I want to share across the wifi with my housemates via a user account called "house" only I have another folder called "iPhone shite" (no kidding) that I want to share via a user account called "devacct" only I have set permissions for Sys Admin(Read and Write). Admin(Write Only Dropbox), and Everyone(No Access)When a user logs into the mac over the wifi, what happens is that even though I have enabled sharing for both users, and turned off the guest account, regardless of what permissions are set for each of these users, "devacct" can see the Movies folder and "house" can see the iPhone shite folder.  This is not what I want. What also happens is that when I set the permissions, they do not save even though I click the lock.  The extra user permissions disappear and the basic permissions reset to default.

OS X :: Permissions For Editing Files From File Sharing Between Two Macs

Feb 10, 2010

I currently have a Mac Mini operating as a Home Theatre with my TV, i transfer media files between my MacBook and the Mini via the Wi-Fi network.

The files transfer fine, no problems. However when it comes to modifying or editing the files i have a labourious task of going into the info pane of the file & adding the Mac Mini as a user and then giving it the read/write permissions.

Is there any way that files transferred from my MacBook via this method already give the read/write permissions automatically to my Mac Mini? Instead of going into every file and adding the permissions manually?

Probably is a simple answer to this, but its the first time i've used file sharing between two macs.

MacBook Air :: Accidentally Set Finder Sharing And Permissions For Everyone To No Access

May 4, 2012

I have a relatively new MacBook Air.  In reviewing the sharing and permissions settings for the Macintosh HD and for user known as "everyone", I changed the setting from "ready only" to "no access" thinking that this would block access from other users (like other family members).  Well, it did, but I'm part of "everyone" and now have no access to my Air.

I have tried rebooting and accessing Safe Mode (Command/Shift/V) and I can see the status information as the machine tries to lauch in Safe Mode, but then the screen turns white leaving me with no interface through which I can launch Finder and correct my stupid mistake.

Intel Mac :: Cannot Delete File - How To Keep It Unlocked

Feb 20, 2012

"The operation can't be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure "Locked" is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again." With the file I am trying to delete I have clicked the lock to unlock the file under the "get info" and then I close the file out. If I re-open the file the lock symbol shows the file is locked again. Under sharing and permission I have selected the "Read&Write" option. I have searched all over the web and cannot find a way to delete this file or even keep it unlocked. I am running Lion.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Custom Metadata In Spotlight?

Mar 2, 2012

If you open Spotlight using Ctrl+F, you get an interface for advanced queries. Under "Kind", you can select "Other..." and Spotlight opens a list of "search attributes". It's a long list but of course not complete. Question: is there a way to add custom metadata attributes that can be read by Spotlight? I am willing to get my hands dirty with plists and such, or perhaps there is some freeware add-on that can facilitate this?

1. I can create a new search attribute for OS X files -- let's call it "foo".

2. I can attach the value "bar" to the metadata attribute "foo", e.g. for the file "myFile.txt".

3. I can write an AppleScript that takes a file name as a parameter and returns the value of the "foo" attribute. I.e., I give it "myFile.txt" and I get "bar" as the result.

4. I can use spotlight to search for "bar" and get all files with this metadata.

5. (Optional) I can use spotlight to search for "foo:bar" and get "myFile.txt".

I have looked at a bunch of things on the Net (OpenMeta, SpotMeta, etc.) but I haven't found anything yet that will do this.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Mail Not Allow To Select Custom Stationery

May 3, 2012

I created a stationery in Mail & saved it as such. The stationery is saved under the custom area and consist of mostly text and then some basic graphics at the end of the message (my fiance e-mail signature w/a picture). When I select a new message and then expand the stationary section, I go to custom and select my saved stationary (in the preview it looks like what I saved) by double clicking but nothing happens - I have also tried clicking and dragging - copy and paste, etc. The text & graphics do not appear in my new e-mail.

I have tried deleting and re-creating the stationary as well as restarting Mail & my computer on multiple occasions but nothing seems to work. All of the other pre-installed stationary seem to work just fine. What I am trying to do is set up premade letters that I e-mail to people all the time, I am tired of typing the same e-mail over and over again. I have a dozen or so that I want to type up and save and then just select the appropriate one for my client, type in their name and other minor changes to make it 'customized' to them and click send.....

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Remove Custom Word From Dictionary

Jun 15, 2012

I have somehow added the word "indadvertedly" to my dictionary. This is not a word in any known language. I have tried opening in TextEdit, Mail, and Word. I have tried right-clicking and choosing "Unlearn." Unlearn is not an option. I have tried opening Library-Spelling and editing the contained file (dynamic-text.dat) but this is not the spelling dictionary file and only contains a jumble of almost random letters. It is the only file in that folder. How to remove a custom word from the dictionary? I feel like it really shouldn't be this hard.

I am running OS 10.7.3, Word for Mac 2011, TextEdit 1.7.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Applying Custom Icons To All Files Of A Type?

Feb 25, 2012

I used to use ResEdit back int he day - and have used various tools on Mac and Windows to change icons. BUt I am stuggling with a default custom icon option for Mac OS X.  I have a set of farily simply icons for use with a number of file types that I use a lot - csv, psl, pti, tp3, xml, cfr, and others and I would like to always have newly created files get the custom icon.

Ideally this would be based on the extension - and they are not all from the same app.  I am not afraid to use the terminal or edit package contents. Although some of them are windows apps - and I already have a custom set in the virtual machine.  Some of the solutions I have seen out there such as Candy Bar seem to be only for application and folder settings.  In a couple cases - such as the .cfr and .pti - the apps do not have an open method where you can double click on the file and have it open - so I woudl be okay with something like reprogramming TextEdit to have the necessary icons and plist updates. Although when I tried to edit the plist file in TextEdit - all I did was render TextEdit unusable.

when I create 30 to 40 files ( a group of 5 differnet file types for each option ) to have icons that help me determine which ones I need to run a macro against - and which to send the customer - and which to upload to the vendor - etc.  Also missing the colorful icons in the sidebar and iTunes - as well an Unsanity Haxies?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Updating MacBook Breaks Custom Login Screen

May 12, 2012

I recently updated my MB to OSX Lion 10.7.4. I had to re-apply my custom menu bar and icons (as usual), but the first thing I noticed was that the login window was back to that disgusting linen texture.I thought the update just replaced the file, (didn't happen before), so I went to /System/Library/Frameworks/Appkit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/NsTexturedFull ScreenBackgroundColor.png. And then the file was the same, my previous login window.

So the question is: Where is the new login screen texture stored? I can change the mission control background, but no amount of goolging or anything provides accurate and working information to replace the login screen on 10.7.4. Why would Apple break this all of a sudden? The worse case scenario would be that Apple decided to troll and draw the login screen programmatically. Which should never be the case...
