Mar 2, 2012If you open Spotlight using Ctrl+F, you get an interface for advanced queries. Under "Kind", you can select "Other..." and Spotlight opens a list of "search attributes". It's a long list but of course not complete. Question: is there a way to add custom metadata attributes that can be read by Spotlight? I am willing to get my hands dirty with plists and such, or perhaps there is some freeware add-on that can facilitate this?Â
1. I can create a new search attribute for OS X files -- let's call it "foo".Â
2. I can attach the value "bar" to the metadata attribute "foo", e.g. for the file "myFile.txt".Â
3. I can write an AppleScript that takes a file name as a parameter and returns the value of the "foo" attribute. I.e., I give it "myFile.txt" and I get "bar" as the result.Â
4. I can use spotlight to search for "bar" and get all files with this metadata.Â
5. (Optional) I can use spotlight to search for "foo:bar" and get "myFile.txt".Â
I have looked at a bunch of things on the Net (OpenMeta, SpotMeta, etc.) but I haven't found anything yet that will do this.Â

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Custom Key Assign Not Working?
May 22, 2012on my keyboard, I have assigned F5 to show me the desktop and F6 to show the dashboard. Both F5 and F6 were set to zoom in & out before. F6 works fine, nothing interferring, but F5 doesn't work. When I press F5, nothing happens.Â
I did this through System Preferences/Mission Control and then checked one again through System Preferences/Keyboard/Mission Control.Â

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screensaver Stuck On IMac Lion
Mar 6, 2012Sometimes when my screensaver kicks in the display never goes to sleep. Instead, the dancing screensaver, which is clearly running, is sucking up CPU and running hot for days. When I finally sit down and move the mouse, the pointer moves but the screen refuses to wake. This is a fairly new iMac, no mods, no programs installed of questionable nature, virtual new sock OEM iMac. Thinking about downgrading to SL as this is one of many problems that I have with Lion (not just on my machine but every Lion box). Has Apple peaked yet? Can we expect nothing but trouble from here on out?

Mar 17, 2012I'd like to be able to view a folder's info and have the the lockpad remain unlocked. This is so I can change permissions much faster.I am not having the easiest time with the custom access panel, because I have to reopen it multiple times so be able to get the settings correct.For instance, I tried adding a user but it would not show up so I closed the Info window and reopened it. The user finally showed up, but then I had to `unlock` this to make further changes. This is when keeping it unlocked would make things easier for my privileges.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Mail Not Allow To Select Custom Stationery
May 3, 2012I created a stationery in Mail & saved it as such. The stationery is saved under the custom area and consist of mostly text and then some basic graphics at the end of the message (my fiance e-mail signature w/a picture). When I select a new message and then expand the stationary section, I go to custom and select my saved stationary (in the preview it looks like what I saved) by double clicking but nothing happens - I have also tried clicking and dragging - copy and paste, etc. The text & graphics do not appear in my new e-mail.
I have tried deleting and re-creating the stationary as well as restarting Mail & my computer on multiple occasions but nothing seems to work. All of the other pre-installed stationary seem to work just fine. What I am trying to do is set up premade letters that I e-mail to people all the time, I am tired of typing the same e-mail over and over again. I have a dozen or so that I want to type up and save and then just select the appropriate one for my client, type in their name and other minor changes to make it 'customized' to them and click send.....

Jun 15, 2012I have somehow added the word "indadvertedly" to my dictionary. This is not a word in any known language. I have tried opening in TextEdit, Mail, and Word. I have tried right-clicking and choosing "Unlearn." Unlearn is not an option. I have tried opening Library-Spelling and editing the contained file (dynamic-text.dat) but this is not the spelling dictionary file and only contains a jumble of almost random letters. It is the only file in that folder. How to remove a custom word from the dictionary? I feel like it really shouldn't be this hard.
I am running OS 10.7.3, Word for Mac 2011, TextEdit 1.7.
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screensaver Always On - Not Detecting Inactivity
May 23, 2012Recently I am having issues with the screensaver setting, it comes on every time I reach the log-in page while booting, and instead of turning on after 'x' minutes of inactivity it just gets turned on after 'x' minutes. Means if I slide it to 5 minutes, I get the screensaver on after 5 mins, be it doing work or watching a movie in it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screensaver Interrupts When Computer Is In Use?
May 31, 2012The screensaver countdown does not seem to work correctly: if I set it to, say, 5 minutes, then after 5 minutes (irrespective of whether I'm using an attached mouse or keyboard, or the laptop keyboard/ trackpad), then the screensaver will start. Even when actually typing, the screensaver will still cut in for a brief moment before cancelling itself.Â
The only workaround is to turn the screensaver off.Â
This doesn't seem to be a Lion-specific issue - the problem started with Snow Leopard, and has continued now that I've upgraded to Lion.Â

Jun 1, 2012I like music, and I like the iTunes Artwork screensaver as a way to select music randomly. Often, I get to my computer, wake it up from sleep, and it presents me with a typical login screen.Â
Is it possible to have the computer wake up to the iTunes Artwork screensaver, instead of the traditional login screen? Currently, I have a hot corner set to launch the screensaver, so I first login, then launch the screensaver with the hot corner, then select my background music, then I have to login again. Ideally, I would be able to wake up, select some music, login and go!

Jun 8, 2012My Desktop & Screensaver preference pane (Lion 10.7.4) is not storing changes to the "Folders" section.
I added folders under "Folders" and later deleted the folders from my hard drive. The Desktop & Screensaver preference pane turned these folders into "ghost" folders.Â
So now I have several ghost folders under "Folders" in the Desktop tab of my Desktop & Screensaver preference pane. I can highlight each ghost folder and click the "-" button to delete it, but when I relaunch Desktop & Screensaver they return. Also, I can add new folders to the "Folders" section, but when I relaunch Desktop & Screensaver, they aren't there anymore.Â

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Applying Custom Icons To All Files Of A Type?
Feb 25, 2012I used to use ResEdit back int he day - and have used various tools on Mac and Windows to change icons. BUt I am stuggling with a default custom icon option for Mac OS X. Â I have a set of farily simply icons for use with a number of file types that I use a lot - csv, psl, pti, tp3, xml, cfr, and others and I would like to always have newly created files get the custom icon. Â
Ideally this would be based on the extension - and they are not all from the same app. Â I am not afraid to use the terminal or edit package contents. Although some of them are windows apps - and I already have a custom set in the virtual machine. Â Some of the solutions I have seen out there such as Candy Bar seem to be only for application and folder settings. Â In a couple cases - such as the .cfr and .pti - the apps do not have an open method where you can double click on the file and have it open - so I woudl be okay with something like reprogramming TextEdit to have the necessary icons and plist updates. Although when I tried to edit the plist file in TextEdit - all I did was render TextEdit unusable. Â
when I create 30 to 40 files ( a group of 5 differnet file types for each option ) to have icons that help me determine which ones I need to run a macro against - and which to send the customer - and which to upload to the vendor - etc. Â Also missing the colorful icons in the sidebar and iTunes - as well an Unsanity Haxies?

In Photo Booth you can add custom backdrops however I am unable to do so with my new macbook pro.In photo booth if you click on effects and then click the box on the farthest right. Normally you should be able to drag and drop pictures for custom backdrops. It worked before on my old macbook w/ snow leopard. Unfortunately, Apple has very lousy documentation support for Photo Booth.

May 10, 2012I've been using a custom login background tile by the usual method; replacing NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png in System-->Library-->Frameworks-->AppKit.framework-->Versions-->C-->Resources. After the 10.7.4 update, my custom tile is still in the correct place, but the system is displaying the stock login .

Jun 22, 2012I don't like the way that finder arranges my files and folders. I have tried all the arrangements and none of them "flow" for me. What I would like to do is to be able to put my files / folders where I want them. I like to group similar folders together and put the most important files/folders at the top. Now this isn't an exhaustive list of how I want to arrange them. Its more about where my eyes go and what I want to see. I am a new mac user so maybe this is a really simple fix that I don't know about.Â

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screensaver Frozen On IMac After Going To Sleep?
Feb 18, 2012When my IMac goes to sleep, the screen saver is "frozen". The only way to get to my login accounts is by "cleaning" the screen with my mouse. It's as though the screen is not refreshing itself after going to sleep and whatever the last image was, it stays. However, it's not locked up or anything. I just need to move my mouse around over the login accounts and it slowly clears away the screen saver so I can see where to click to log in. I've tried disabling the screen saver, but have the same results. Something is causing the last image to freeze on the screen when the monitor sleeps.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Updating MacBook Breaks Custom Login Screen
May 12, 2012I recently updated my MB to OSX Lion 10.7.4. I had to re-apply my custom menu bar and icons (as usual), but the first thing I noticed was that the login window was back to that disgusting linen texture.I thought the update just replaced the file, (didn't happen before), so I went to /System/Library/Frameworks/Appkit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/NsTexturedFull ScreenBackgroundColor.png. And then the file was the same, my previous login window.
So the question is: Where is the new login screen texture stored? I can change the mission control background, but no amount of goolging or anything provides accurate and working information to replace the login screen on 10.7.4. Why would Apple break this all of a sudden? The worse case scenario would be that Apple decided to troll and draw the login screen programmatically. Which should never be the case...

May 14, 2012I have Lion and the old fax program I was using (PageSender), which will not upgrade for use with Lion. I am going back to using the built-in fax option that Mac has in the Printer functions. Is there a way to create and use a custom fa cover sheet? Or am I relegated to jus the simple text the printer window opens with? And, ues, I do need to have a fax - no everyone, especially the older folks that are clients for our business, are using email, or even using computers. That means to service all of my clients, I must fax.

Screensaver Freezes On MacBook Pro Running Latest Lion

Mar 24, 2012When selecting the iTunes Artwork screensaver and running "Test", the screen is Black or Blank (no Artwork). I left it running for over and hour and the artwork never appeared. I have tons of artwork in my iTunes library and checked it after launching iTunes. The preview window for the screensaver is also blank and does *not* say "Your iTunes library does not contain any songs with artwork". As such, I'm suspecting some bug involved here.Â
I have tried the following suggested solutions:Â
- Consolidating / Rebuilding Library from iTunes. Then trying the screensaverÂ
- Launching iTunes while holding "Option" key. Selecting the correct ~/Music/iTunes library again, then trying the screensaverÂ
- Deleting the ~/iTunes/Album Artwork folder. Launching iTunes again. Downloading some album art. Trying the screensaver.Â

OS X V10.7 Lion :: System Drives Locked Up - "custom" Access Can't Be Reset
Feb 27, 2012My system crashed and it took be a day and a half to get it working again: Lion wouldn't reinstall from the DVD, from the internet or from the Lion USB stick I made. Finally I pulled out all the drives and put in only a Lion drive I had set aside as a safety. This worked. My main system drive and the Time Machine drive display a little lock icon and when I open Info, their permissions are all listed as "custom." Worse, when I try to change them, I can't. All my data is on those drives and Lion won't even let me open them to transfer files. How do I change the permissions?

Jun 22, 2010I put custom icons in place of alot of my folders and other things in OSX, the problem is that after i changed the Finder icon and then booted up in safe mode to make it change like i was told to do my Safari Firefox and Garageband icons have all gone missing. and have been replace with the generic app symbol. the ICNS files with the new icons are still in the right folders, they're just not showing up...
