OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Shutdown IMac - Safari Won't Quit (Option Grayed Out)
Jul 5, 2012
My mac is suddenly very slow . I have been just putting it to sleep. I decided to shut it down, but Safari won't quit. When I go to File, the "Quit Safari" is greyed out. I also tried "Command Z" but that doesn't work either.

Unable to close Safari at the drop down menu because Quit Safari is greyed out. When I right click on the icon in the tray and click on Quit, nothing happens. Therefore, I cannot restart or shut down this computer.

When I click "shutdown" on my MacBook PRO, I get a popup saying "Safari Cancelled Shutdown" then if I try to close Safari the "Quit Safari" is gray and none functional. Even if I let it set for several hours and try again it has not resolved. If I hold down the power button and force shutdown, then when I reboot it works fine for awhile then repeats the whole cycle. All software is updated.

I cleared out all files of Windows I had on my Mac before I did any research. Maybe I thought for some unknown reason that is how you fix the problem - obviously not.
FYI, I did go through the whole bootcamp installation, divided my hard drive, what have you. I cannot delete the BC partition through BC Assistant, the option box is greyed out. I cannot adjust the partition size through disk utility because the minus and plus buttons are greyed out as well.

When I shut down this Mac, sometimes Safari quits cleanly, but mostly it doesn't. All Safari's windows close but the app itself doesn't. Checking the Safari menu the Quit command is greyed out whereas formerly it wasn't. At this point my workaround is to Force Quit Safari.
Lion 10.7.3 on a Mac Mini and Safari 5.1.3.
Safari extensions in use: Ad Block, 1Password, Click to Flash.

Every time I try to hit command Q to exit safari, it doesn't work. I can't quit safari so my computer won't shut down. I also can't quit added tabs when I'm in safari anymore.

I was deleting items of my external drive through MacBook keeper and when I went to shut down Safari (which was open) stopped the shutdown process. So in the end I force quit the computer. When it came to restarting I get the usula apple symbol and sound when start up begins but there it stops. The spoked wheel just keeps spinning below the Apple Symbol.

I've been using Safari 5.1.4 for about six months and haven't had any problems until now. All of a sudden, I can't get Safari to quit. (My other browsers are fine.) When I scroll down under "file" the "quit safari" option is light gray and unresponsive. At first I thought I would uninstall Safari and then reinstall. However, when I tried dragging the icon out of applications, it wouldn't go into trash since it's permanently open. When I try to shut down or log out Safari aborts the operation.

I installed Lion OS X on my iMac and was happily working on this morning within Safari for email. Tried to open iTunes and it wouldn't and was then notified that there were 5 system updates which I installed. After that I can no longer get Safari to open - notification says "Safari quit unexpectedly."

Every time I want to shut down my late 2011 MacBook Pro, Mac Mail cancels the shut down & I have to force quit mail. I was having this problem on my old 2008 MacBook before I upgraded to the Pro (but it only started after I upgraded to Lion OSX). So what's wrong w/ Mac Mail? And is there some setting I can change? This is an annoying time suck.Â

Ever since I had my Lion on my iMac, several times, like now, as I write this, I try to quit Safari with the keyboard command, and it makes "that" noise when you can't do a function. When you look at the Safari menu, the "Quit Safari" is grayed out.I am sure this is an error. Is there a way to fix it?Â

I have a mbp 13" with snow leopard. I go to disk utilities to verify my disk (Macintosh HD) and it says I need to repair it after I start the comp with a disk like the mac osx installation cd. I do that and then verify disk again (because the "repair disk" is still grey/un-clickable) and it gives me the same message. How do I repair the disk?

I've got an intel Mac Pro with logitech z5500 5.1 surround speakers (another surround sound question. Yay!). I've got the speakers hooked into my mac using an optical cable. When I go into the midi audio panel and select the configure speakers button, the only thing that is enabled is Stereo. the 5.1 option is grayed out. All I want is to have some surround sound in World of Warcraft like I used to have on my pc using the same speakers.

I bought my late 2011 iMac used from a good friend that barely used it. From day 1, the WiFi hasn't worked and I could never figure out why. It hasn't been a big deal until recently because I prefer a wired connection anyway.. The problem is that I moved into a house and the owner's wireless router is located in the living room.. So now I need to get it working again. After troubleshooting multiple times, here is some information that you will probably need to help me:Â
-When I open Network Diagnostics, the only two options available are Ethernet and Other. The External Modem and Wi-Fi options are grayed out and un-clickable.Â
-When I go to System Preferences>Network, the only things shown in the left sidebar are Ethernet, FireWire, and Bluetooth PAN. When I click the "+" button to add a network, under the "interface" dropdown, the options available are: FireWire, Ethernet, Bluetooth DUN, VPN, PPPoE, and 6 to 4 (no wi-fi obviously).Â
-Under System Report>Wi-Fi, everything appears to be installed and running correctly. I'm not an expert on Wireless settings, but it seems right. If a screenshot is needed of that, just ask.Â

Anyone have this problem with the Facers feature? Both in the toolbar and in the drop down menu the Faces option is grayed out. I simply can't seem to get to it. Places is there and works but not Faces. What's odd is that I installed Aperture 3 on two Mac computers and everything is fine on the other machine. Reinstalling the software didn't change anything.

It's not seldom that I go to sleep but my Mac is still downloading for one or two hours, or Time Machine is backing up wirelessly. I remember I've seen the ability "shutdown when ready" in a (very) few apps (could be Windows ), but isn't there some general function for it?

I got my new Office Mac, and I was hoping to install it. It said Firefox and Safari needed to close. Firefox was a snap (good job guys!), but Safari is doing HORRIBLE. It is not forcing to quit at all, and I don't want to restart or shut down (I bet it wouldn't work.) Now, according to THIS issue... I can't install my Mac Office 2011, and THAT on the other hand stinks, because I need it for school projects.

I am running Lion Version 10.7.3 and use Firefox most of the time. When I want to download video content I used to go to the Window tab, hit activity and find the file. I would then copy it and go back to the window tab a click on download. I updated Safari to 5.1.3 and no longer have the download option visible.

I was reading a thread about Snow Leopard bootup times, and one of the posters said that what with the fast wake up of Macs, shutting down is useless unless an update requires it or you use bootcamp. {URL]. So, my question to you is, do you sleep your computer or shut it down when you finish using it? I've only had mine for a week and personally I shut mine down, but maybe thats a hangover from the Windows part of my life.

I am running Mavericks 10.9.3.
I always quit out of all apps before doing a shutdown. I make sure that nothing, except Finder, is running when i shutdown. And, I do a full shutdown, not just sleep. Â
Yet, occasionally, the apps that were running before I quit out of them will restart when I turn the MacBook back on.Â
