OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Type Greek Letter Mu?
Mar 15, 2012
I looked this up on the web and most places say type "Option M" but this doesn't work for me. I have a MacBook Air 3.2 by the way. I have US Extended as the keyboard layout type. Maybe this has something to do with it not working?

I'm having the same problem in ALL my typing: when I hold down the shift key for multiple letters, only the first is capitalized; the rest come out lower case. This is not a replacement behavior: I don't see the Uppercase letter get replaced by the lowercase one; only the first is uppercase. Is there some new text replacement routine? Can this be customized? I can't stand having to release the shift key between letters or to have to shift-lock, shift unlock.

I had problems with my G5 (2005) and the repair shop changed te mother board under warranty. The computer came back with a defect DVD/CD writer that was working before they change mother board. I sent back the computer and they repaired it again. Computer came back and now the letter H (lower case) is not working. I tried several keyboard and the letter H lower case does not work but upper case H works. The repair shop cannot find the problem. I reinstalled OSX, reformatted my a disk and nothing is working to correct the problem.

When I tried to type the letter 'o' in Terminal, the application just wouldn't let me and keeps flashing every time I press the 'o' key. I searched the internet but can't find the solution for this issue. Disabling me from typing this certain alphabet has caused me a lot of inconvenience..

my macBook won't type the letter "r" anymore. I every time I hit that key, it makes a kind of electric "Bonk" sound and doesn't produce anything. However, it is weird because it will type a capital "R", just not lowercase. Do you know why?

Using an 17inch Imac, 1.83 intel processor. Today I installed
Snow Leopard, pleased until I tried to write text into the body of an Apple email.
The email doesn't recognize the keyboard. I get no response from some keys,
get zeroes on some keys, and some keys are recognized.

I've had this problem since I upgraded to SL and I'm finally looking for a solution, as it's mildly annoying So anytime I'm opening up a file browser window within an app - say, to upload or save a file in Firefox, or to open a file in any old program - I used to be able to navigate to a folder on my keyboard by typing the first letter or two of the name. Now, however, when I try to do that, nothing happens except the Mac makes that dull "thud" sound. Now, if I navigate inside a folder (by pressing the right arrow key) and then go back out (press the left arrow key), then it works like a charm. But what a pain!

Whenever I type a word into a search box, the same word, or a word the computer thinks I wanted to type appears next to it. I would describe it as intrusive, unwanted predictive tet, and I cannt find a way to prevent it or switch it off. I'm using Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini.

I know this problem has probably been discussed and I've searched but have not been able to find good information. Main computer still running 10.4.11, MBPro running 10.5.8.
I'm a retired graphic designer, only now doing pro bono work, so not completely up to date.
Since leopard and snow leopard there are a number of font problems. Type 1 Helvetica Neue has been a standard of mine for 20 years. Likewise, Adobe Garamond Extra glyphs are in thousands of my files.
10.5.8 AGE characters do not show up. I installed 10.6 and they still don't show up. Any way to fix?
Also, any way to fix the Type 1 Helvetica Neue/ Snow Leopard conflict?

Before I had a 9c84 panel, went to System Preferences> Displays> Color> OPen Profile. Before (This was when I was running Leopard) I went down to 13 and found the panel type.
Now I get 'aagg' 'para' 32 parametric tone response curve on that line. Underneath in the description device manufacturer and device model are blank.

I have recently changed all my movie files on my Snow Leopard system to be launchable by QuickTime Player 7 instead of QuickTime Player X [see note below]. For various historical reasons, these movie files have a variety of icons associated with them. I'd like to run some sort of utility which does a mass change of the icons of all my movies to the same, one, single icon ... and I'd like to do this in one fell swoop, instead of having to go through an icon change procedure movie by movie by movie by movie by movie by movie by movie by movie ...
After changing all my movies to be launchable by QT 7, I have restarted Finder and restarted my machine, but the old icons remain on all of the movies.
Is there any way that I can perform this mass icon change under Snow Leopard, or am I out of luck?

I was using Terminal in my MacBook Pro to check if it was infected with the flashback Trojan but all results were negative. After confirming that I was not infected I typed the word "clear" and then the word "exit" before quitting terminal. Is this the appropriate procedure to close the terminal in OSX? Or it is an overkill? Will these commands affect the functionality of the command line in the future?

I use Comic Book Lover to read digital comics - these are .cbr and .cbz files, which are comic rar and zip archives, respectively. Pre-Snow Leopard, these were recognised by Comic Book Lover as Comic Book Lover files, complete with custom icons, icon previews, etc. I also use .rar and .zip files for archiving. When I installed Snow Leopard, it read all .cbr files as .rar files for Stuffit Expander, and .cbz as .zip files. I actually use UnRarX for rar file management, so using the Get Info box I changed all .rar files to use UnRarX, .cbr and .cbz to use Comic Book Lover, and .zip to use the standard Archive Utility.
Problem is Snow Leopard is not distinguishing between .rar and .zip and .cbr and .cbz. Once I've changed all .cbr and .cbz files to open with Comic Book Lover, all .rar and .zip files also get changed! Likewise if I set all .rar files to be opened with UnRarX, this changes all .cbr files! Clearly Snow Leopard is handling file types in a new way. Is there anyway around this, or am I going to have to pick one file type affiliation that would be most useful (say .cbr and .cbz opened with Comic Book Lover), and live with having to right-click on a .rar or .zip file to say "Open with..." UnRarX or Archive Utility?

Ever since I upgraded to 10.7.4 I've had some major annoyances rear their heads with my 2011 iMac. The issue I'm looking for help with, though it may seem small, is with the Safari search bar. I know there have been discussions before about this and I've always had a difficult relationship with the search bar as it is supposed to change to your 'local' search engine, e.g. for me that would be Google UK, yet it has often defaulted to Google US which means that searches can be a little less relevant at times. Anyway, for months things have been fine. The search bar defaulted to Google UK until the 10.7.4 update hit... All of a sudden my Google search bar now defaults to Google.com in GREEK...Â
Since I don't speak a word of Greek, I'm sure you can see how this has become an issue. I've tried all manner of things, resetting safari, changing language settings but have been unable to get it to change back. I tried changing to Bing search but to be honest, Google search in Greek is a **** of a lot more useful than Bing in English is, which I think says a lot. I did have greek as a secondary keyboard layout so that I could use the greek characters for my physics work but UK English has always been my default and I have since removed Greek yet the search bar stays the same. It's really becoming irritating now as every time I search it sets my whole Google experience to Greek with a cookie so any google.com service I use ends up in Greek and it's a pain to reset it.Â

Currently I'm trying to look up something in the SVN book on line, and it's all Greek characters. If I view page source, the characters are displayed in the proper font. Google searches show several others having this problem, but no one had a solution. Someone posted a solution here, but it was redacted for some reason and the only part that makes sense is that I should but a product called Suitcase Fusion. I refuse to pay money to make my Mac stop displaying characters in Greek font at random. In some circles that can be considered extortion.

I am quite new to Macintosh and struggle with the very small fonts in Leopard.
I use a mbp 15" with the native resolution and a second monitor.
I adjusted the font size in the preferences to a bigger font. With the finder and some software I am very sadisfied now.But there are still problems here and there.
When I use quick look in mail.app the font size is so tiny (small excel files), that even with the lupe function the fonts can not be read properly.
The same happens in other software, as the standard smallest font, used by leopard is just to small.
Is there any proper way, to adjust this globally?

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.
However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.
My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?
Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?
I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.

I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

"Photoshop CS" and "Acrobat 6.0 Standard" suddenly stopped working in my iMac, apparently after I upgraded it to MacOS 10.6.8 (the latest version of Snow Leopard). Both programs had worked normally until that OS upgrade. I deleted Photoshop CS and tried to re-install it from the original CD, but the installation never proceeds because I get an error message entitled: "Install Adobe Photoshop CS quit unexpectedly". This is the full error message:Â

Today I performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on my late 2009 Mac Mini. After completing the installation, I began running software update to bring everything up-to-date.While software update did find and install a number of updates (10.6.8v1.1 Combo update, Security Update 2012-002, Apple Software Installer Update, iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.3, Airport Utility, Java, Safari) it did not find an update for iTunes (which starts at version 9.x, I believe, in a SL clean install).I assumed that this was some sort of random glitch and manually downloaded and installed iTunes 10.6.3.After that, I re-installed iLife '11 (from a retail DVD, not the App Store). When I ran Software Update again, it found updates for Garage Band, iDVD, and iWeb, but it did not show the updates for iPhoto and iMovie.I found this to be unnerving, as I performed a clean install when I first obtained this Mini a few months ago and didn't experience any of these problems - all of my Apple software updated automatically through Software Update without a hitch.
I began researching this problem online and found that other people have been experiencing this same problem (or some variation of it), and it seems like it began appearing around the time Apple updated some of its security certificates in March. In particular, I've found several references to the missing iPhoto update. This one is especially noticeable because an iPhoto library created in iPhoto 9.2.3 will not open in iPhoto 9.0, and this generates an error upon opening the program (i.e., a user backs up their iPhoto library created in 9.2.3, performs a SL clean install, reinstalls iLife, goes through the Software Update process until it shows that no more updates are available, and are shocked to find that they are unable to open their backed up iPhoto library because they have an out of date version of iPhoto). The most common (and admittedly logical) solution proposed in the threads I've read is to download any necessary updates directly from the Apple website. However, I am curious as to why this previously functional feature now appears to be broken.Has anyone else been struggling with this? Does it indeed have something to do with the new security certificates? Is Apple aware of the problem?
