I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 and we got wifi at the house this afternoon. It will not connect, if I open network diagnostics the top four lights are green, internet and server are red. OS X :: External Monitor Not Working Properly With Snow Leopard

Jan 17, 2010

Recently I installed the Snow Leopard OS on my Macbook Pro, previously I had 10.5 installed. However, now when I connect my Macbook to my flatscreen TV (Panasonic Plasma), using a mini display port cable to an HDMI cable, there's a black border around the edges of the picture. Before the Snow Leopard upgrade I was able to view the entire screen area of the Plasma TV, without any borders. The only thing I've done differently since then is install Snow Leopard. Does anyone know how I can fill the screen with image without using the zoom option on the TV screen, as the zoom cuts off some image at the top and bottom?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: 1920x1080 Not Possible For External Monitor After Update

Since I updated Snow Leopard to Version 10.6.8 on my MBP15, I can't use my SyncMaster P2770 HD (Samsung) in its highest 1920x1080 resolution anymore. I can choose 1920x1080 in the monitor-preferences, but having done that the resolution remains at 1680x1050 @60Hz (I can see it and even the monitor's info-menu says, that i still use 1680x1050 @60Hz). I use a Mini DisplayPort to VGA-Adapter and a VGA-cable.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: 2nd Monitor - Icons Move To Edge (sometimes)?

Apr 29, 2012

I have a 2nd monitor attached to my MBAir.  I have icons (folders, a few files, and some aliases - not a lot!!) positioned on both monitors.  I can work this way just fine for days.  (Yes, I do restart nightly and, yes, after a basic restart all the icons stay put.) But sometimes, out of the blue, something happens that causes all the icons on the 2nd monitor to line up on the border between the two screen displays (i.e., almost off the 2nd monitor but not quite completely onto the MBAir's display).

This seems to be related to saving a file onto the desktop -- say, when I'm using Safari on the 2nd monitor and I drag the address bar address to save a webloc file.  However, I can do this more often than not with no odd effects.  (However, lately I've started dragging into a FOLDER on the desktop to avoid this.)  Now, I just watched it happen when all I did was save a tiny .TXT file to the desktop. Of course I can fix things by dragging everything back to where it was (plus, I typically do a Restart before that since I figure something has gone amiss with the system so I'd like to clean things out).  But what I'd really like is to figure out is why this is happening in the first place so that I can prevent it ... or, at least, so that I can stop doing whatever special behavior is causing it.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Create A Workflow That Will Monitor A Webpage?

Jun 10, 2012

I am trying to create a workflow that will monitor a webpage and send me email if the page contains a certain keyword. I got it working, I get email; the email contains the keyword, or is an empty message when the keyword is missing.I would rather not get these empty messages is possible. Until I figure this out, I may send these message at some gmail address and create a fiter there to forward only message with that keyword. Not elegant but should work. Anyway, long term I want a more elegant solution. Here is what I have in Automator:

1) Get Specific ULRs

2) Get Text from Webpage

3) Filter Paragraphs (and here is where I check whether the keyword shows up or not)

4) New mail message (which contains they keyword from #3, or is empty)

5) Send outgoing messages.

As I said, the workflow always works, and will send a message with that keyword, or an empty message. How do I make the workflow send email ONLY if they keyword is detected? There is not IF in Automator as far as I can see. This is the first time I try to do something in Automator so maybe I am missing something.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Split One Monitor Into Two, Differently Configured Desktops

Feb 2, 2012

I have a 27" iMac. I would like to split the screen into two differently configured desktops or monitors. Apps like TwoUp or Divy don't exactly do this. I'll explain it with an example:

Suppose I'm working on a document and I need to open many folders to retrieve files. One common problem is that opened folders overlap each other and sometimes they overlap with the document I'm working on, or they go underneath the document. I would like to split the screen vertically in, say, two virtual, independent desktops/monitors, like this:

- one window/space on one side (say, on the left) of the screen would contain the document  from top to bottom, with no dock bar on the bottom

- the other window/space (right) would behave as a regular, full desktop, with the entire dock on the bottom

In this way, if I need to navigate to find a file to use in the document, I would move the cursor to the right. The Finder would work only in this window/space, thus windows or other applications would never overlap or clutter the left side of the screen. Drag-and-drop from right to left should be possible.

One way to imagine it is as if the 16x9 monitor were comprised by two vertical, 8x9 independent monitors side by side, each with its own configuration.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Does Not Allow Me To Connect To 802.11n Networks?

Sep 4, 2009

I have an Airport Extreme card with the Atheros AR5416 chipset in my Mac mini (late 2007 rev.) and it worked perfectly in Leopard.

I could connect to my roommate's Airport Extreme just fine on its 802.11n network. But with multiple tries installing Snow Leopard it just has not worked to connect to that same network.

Despite the antenna only being connected to the connector for 5GHz networks, I can connect only to 802.11g (2.4GHz) networks but not 802.11n (5GHz) networks.

If the network card was defective I would expect Leopard to have similar issues but it was rock solid. Right now I am using an Airport Express as a bridge through ethernet to get internet connectivity.

This is something I fully expect to deal with in Linux or even Windows with old drivers, but certainly not on Apple's own OS on their own hardware.

Has anyone else had similar issues with Snow Leopard? Whether you do or not, what chipset does your Airport Extreme card use? You can get this info from Apple menu -> About this Mac -> More Info -> Airport -> Firmware version.

From what I understand, Apple is still using both Broadcom and Atheros chipsets in their Airport cards, so I'm curious to see if it's an issue with Atheros chipset drivers in particular.

Likely not useful for most of you - but for anyone who happens to use Juniper Network's Network Connect app for ssl VPN access, here's how to fix post SL install. Apparently, SL messes with perms and removes the 'Frameworks' dir.

Code:
sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/juniper/nc/[version number]/
sudo mkdir '/Applications/Network Connect.app/Contents/Frameworks'
Tested, works like a charm.

OS X :: Windows Can't Connect To Mac Anymore With Snow Leopard

Aug 30, 2009

I was running 10.5.8 on my Mac Pro, and I had file letters mapped in Vista to all of my Mac Pro's drives. Post-upgrade, I can no longer connect to any of the drives -- I can see the Mac Pro in my Network window in Windows, but double-clicking on the Mac Pro results in a password prompt in which no password is accepted. Obviously something has changed on the Mac. I've gone through the Network dialog boxes in 10.6, but can't find any culprit.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mac Can't Connect To Internet / No IP / No DNS

Apr 1, 2012

My Mac Mini Server with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server doesn't connect to the Internet. It can connect to the router either via Ethernet or Airport, but it can not get an IP address -- it always assigns itself a random IP address which is not in the correct range for the router. All other devices, including PC, iPhone and iPad can work correctly with the router. When I manually typed in the router's IP in Safari, 192.168.0.1, I can see the router admin page. But typing in any external IP nothing shows up.Thinking it might be the router's problem, I used iPhone 4S' tethering tried wifi, USB, Bluetooth tethering and the Mac Mini still doesn't have any Internet connection.I changed the DNS in the Network preferences, trying Google's public DNS 8.8.8.8, my ISP's DNS, and empty DNS.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Connect To Sever Websites

Apr 28, 2012

I am running multiple services with the latest version of OS X 10.6 Server on my MacMini (web, mail, ichat, address book, etc.) . When I try to open my websites I get an "unable to find sever message". Everything has been working fine for the last 2 years and no changes have been made to the server settings, ISP, or DNS. All other services are working as they should. The server is hooked up to an Airport Extreme via a cable modem with a static IP. I have tried the following thus far:

1) restarted the server, airport extreme, and cable modem

2) checked the DNS via the web and my site addresses are pointing to my static IP address

3) turned Web services off and on again in Server Admin

4) checked the Airport port mapping to make sure Web Service (Port 80) was still open

Rather than the 403 I was getting, I now just see 'Safari cant open the page [URL] because Safari cant connect to the server macintosh.lan.'running the apachectl configtest commend. I did that, and got the following:

/usr/sbin/apachectl: line 73: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument

Syntax error on line 1 of /private/etc/apache2/users/James.conf:

Applications :: Netflix Plays Full Screen On External Monitor In Safari On Snow Leopard?

Sep 7, 2009

For the last year I have been searching for a way to play Netflix instant streaming content on my external Cinema Display connected to my iMac. Once a movie was playing full screen on the external display if you clicked on anything on the main display the movie would fall out of full screen and back to window mode. This is highly annoying and I really wanted a solution.

I ran across Plex some months back and they had a Netflix plugin which solved the problem, or so I thought. While Plex could play movies from Netflix full screen on the external display without falling out of full screen, it came with a host of compromises. The first compromise was that in Plex my instant queue never reflected what was actually in my queue. Recently I had 116 movies in my queue and Plex reported only 80 of those. Worse if one of the movies I wanted to watch was missing I would try to use Plex's Netflix search function and Plex would still not find the movie. Some titles simply could not be found through Plex, a problem the author acknowledges and says he is working on with no ETA. The other issue I have with Plex is that the fast forward and rewind functions that work so well in the Netflix browser based player do not work at all in Plex, making navigation in a movie painful within Plex.

So tonight I set out to look for an alternative to Plex, I came up empty handed. Then I had an idea, I searched my Mac for the Silverlight plugin and when I found it was greeted with a window stating that an update was available. This has happened several times before and each time I updated with the hope that Microsoft fixed the external monitor viewing problem, but it always remained. So this time I updated and proceeded to run my usual test which is to put a Firefox browser window on my external display, play a movie, and then click the full screen button. The movie went full screen which it always does, then I clicked in my other Firefox window open on my main display, as always the window on the external monitor fell out of full screen.

Dejected I went on to my second test which is to perform the exact same sequence I just described but using Safari instead of Firefox. Again it went full screen on the external display but this time something was different! The window where I clicked full screen froze and a new window opened behind it in full screen. Now I had two windows open on the external display, the smaller frozen one and a full screen one playing the movie behind it. I minimized the small window which left only the full screen one playing on the external display. Then I clicked on a window on my main display and the movie continued to play full screen on the external monitor! Thinking it was a fluke I closed Safari and tried it again, it worked perfectly!

This is awesome now I can play my Netflix movies on my external display in full screen without any issues and I have all of the features of the Netflix browser based player, in particular fast forward and rewind.

One last thing, prior to this working playback in a browser window was extremely choppy for me. Plex did not play choppy and it was another reason I was using it for playback. Now in full screen with the browser based player through Safari there is absolutely no choppiness.

Just for reference here is everything I am running:

OS X 10.6
Safari 4.0.3
Silverlight plugin 3.0.40723.0 (which interestingly is dated July 23)

Even though my system told me an update was available I am confused by the July 23 date of the plugin. Maybe it wasn't the plugin that solved this but rather my newly installed Snow Leopard in conjunction with Safari 4.0.3? Whatever the case I am thrilled to report that it finally works!

OS X :: Citrix Web After Snow Leopard - Unable To Connect To Office Network

Sep 2, 2009

I use Citrix Web to access my office network. It was working fine on my iMac for several after I installed Snow Leopard. But today, I'm getting an odd error message. I log in, and then a box pops up that says I need to make sure that the remote server is listening on Port 1494. I am not able to connect to my office network. Has Snow Leopard changed anything so that another program is using that port? I have not upgraded my Macbook yet and I was able to connect, so I don't think my office network is the problem. I have tried Safari in both 32 bit and 64 bit, and I've tried more than one Citrix client. So there must be setting on my computer I need to change - if I could only determine what it is.

OS X :: Upgraded To Snow Leopard/can't Connect To Router Or Any Wireless Network

Feb 8, 2010

After extensive Googling, I need to take a break, and find out if someone with more experience knows what I can try next...

I'm not the best when it comes to Networks, or even router configuration. I'll just put that out there, in case I've missed something obvious.

My router connection (DLink 2640B) was working perfectly fine before I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now I cannot connect to any wireless network, and I cannot connect to the router administration page, either

(192.168.1.1).

The internet connection still works fine on two other laptops. Also, I can connect this iMac via the ethernet cable.

I've tried deleting the files NetworkInterfaces.plist, com.apple.network.identification.plist, and preferences.plist; I've tried rebooting my router; I've tried creating a new network. Airport sees all the networks, tries to connect, then it just says that it fails.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Bonjour Printer Not Detected, LPD Fails To Connect?

Apr 17, 2012

Trying to find a solution to my printing issues, which have taken many forms over the years. The current frustrating gremlin: Macbook Air, OS X 10.6.8, Lexmark E250D laser, printer driver built in to Mac OS, driver .dmg also downloaded and installed from Lexmark  Wireless home network on NETGEAR router with extension to Airport Express. Lexmark E250D laser attached to USB on the Airport Express. Cannot add printer via the default pathway, the Bonjour system finds the printer correctly for about 5 seconds after the printer is plugged in to the AE USB port then it simply disappears off the window never to return. Airport Utility cannot find the AE which I recently reset and set up without problem. The AE light is green.

Via Network Preferences I find the IP of the AE and try to set up LPD printing. This successfully finds the Lexmark, calls it a Generic Postscrpipt until I select the Lexmark driver from the OS X list. It seems to correctly identify printer features such as in built memory and duplex printing. Sending a file to the printer results in the warning that the IP address is busy. In the past I simply connected by USB cable to the printer, but since a recent move the house/ office layout makes that very inconvenient. I have to go outside and downstairs to the office which has no internal access from the main part of the house.
