I have been trying to use my Mac Mini with Lion Server as a router for my network with no success. I have tried the wizard and it finishes and nothing works.Â
I have a Cable Modem connected to the Mac Mini via the USB connector and the server surfs fine. The DHCP server is now correctly working I think and the clients are getting the correct IP addresses now.

I have an iPad and a Mac Pro so I set up internet sharing on the Mac Pro. It looks like it's working from the Mac Pro side -- the little WiFi icon on the menu bar has an arrow -- but the iPad simply will not connect to the internet. My Wifi connection preference tells me the correct network is selected, and the icons to the left of the name look right, but just right of the network name there's a spinning circle icon which means it's still waiting for a connection.Â
Both were just upgraded to the latest OS (Yosemite 10.10.1 for the Pro, iOS 8.1.2 for the iPad) today, which means both were restarted today.

So, I am trying to share my internet (USB modem) via ethernet to my PS3.
I am aware that I must enable Internet Sharing in System Preferences, but, the option is not present there.
I'd like to setup a network account on Lion Server and allow that account to VPN in to my server. But I want this account to have limited access to my LAN, similar to how the stovepiped "Guest Network" works with Airport Extremes. I don't see any way to assign specific network accounts specific IP ranges outside the normal, say, 10.0.1/24. Is there even any way to assign a specific account something in the range,say, 10.0.2/24? Any way to further limit network access for Lion Server VPN sessions?

We have a brand new Mac Pro (12 core with 64GB of RAM) running OS X Lion Server in a corporate environment. The server is running only file sharing and software update servers, and we have around 40 users who need to be connected over AFP at all times. This company runs 24/7 and we have an XSan environment using an ATTO Celerity 8GB 4 channel fiber card (84EN) along with a 6 port 10GB Ethernet card. The Ethernet card is configured in a link aggregation bond using ports 1-4. The idea is that clients who do not have fiber cards installed on their machines can still connect to the SAN via Ethernet and this file server. They AFP connect to the share, and of course the share is the SAN. It's a single mount point and everyone has read/write access.Â
The issue is that this machine keeps crashing (multiple times per day) and I cannot find any reason why. Syslog shows nothing of value and I've called into Apple Enterprise Support who also brought nothing to the table.Â
We initially had SMB and AFP file sharing activated but as soon as a Windows 7 client connected the machine was brought down. So, I disabled SMB via terminal (sudo serveradmin stop smb) and deactivated it via the Server app for the share point). That at least allows the machine to be up for 4-6 hours before crashing again.Â
This is seemingly the simplest of setups for file sharing and I would've thought that this beast of a machine would be able to handle being a file server without issue for far more than 40 clients. I'm seeing high CPU usage, which Apple support told me was perfectly normal (around 60% on the kernel_task process and around 55% on the AppleFileServer process). It also seems to consume all 64GB of memory, though it shows 60GB as inactive, but at the same time it's paging in and out.Â
Virtually all of the clients are running Lion (10.7.4), the server itself is running 10.7.4. There are a few ethernet connected clients running 10.6 along with two running 10.5. As I mentioned I disabled SMB so there are no Windows computers connecting to this machine at this time (though it would be nice to get that functionality back if AFP can be stabilized).Â
This company simply cannot be down, especially not multiple times per day. The only way to bring things back and running from a crash is to hard boot the machine via the power button as you cannot perform a restart or a shutdown. Once the machine comes back up everything is back to working order for a few more hours until it happens again.

I´ve got a magic triangle setup, it seems to be working. I got a 10.7.3 Lion Server that has a bind to my AD and also is operating as OD Master. Then I´ve got a test user in my AD and a MacBook Air connected to AD and my OD, no issues here. Works fine logging on as my testuser to my AD on my MB Air. What I would like to do is to manage some Mac OS settings through my OD, I have two local groups in OD (Mac Users and Mac Computers). I have added my AD user test account to the Mac Users group and also added my MacBook AD computer account to the group Mac Computers.Â
If I for example edit some settings applied to the user group, lets say that I edit some dock settings, that settings does work and applies when I log in to my AD. But the settings applied on the computer group does not work. I have tried setting some Energy Saver settings to the Mac Computers group but that setting does not go through when I log on to the computer belonging to that group. Any one seen this before, maybe pointing me in the right direction.

But not having much of success. I have installed 10.7.3 on virtual machine (Using Fusion 4) on Mac Pro and given a 4 GB of RAM. This machine is running in its own bubble, it has no communication even with host. So I have configured DHCP and DNS services which seems to be working fine (I have confirmed with another client which can get IP and DNS server address from this server).
Now whenever I have tried to run OD setup using both tools (Server App and Admin Tool), it takes forever to configure (more than 1 hour) and then it fails with error saying "check your network settings". I have checked and machine has proper IP address (tried both DHCP and Static) and also used "lookup" utility to resolve the DNS address both ways (forward and reverse).
I'm trying to make it so that my students have the ability to log onto our iMacs (all running Lion) through our Mac Mini Server (also Lion). I recently had to go through drastic changes in order to simply create a directory administrator, yet it still persists. The active directory isn't binded onto the server yet. When I try to bind the my Active Directory with the Mac Mini, I get the following popup after logging in as the Directory Admin:Â

I have lion installed on a mac mini with 2 usb ethernet adapters. Everytime I reboot the mac mini, it enables Internet Sharing and changes the IP on the 2 USB ethernet interfaces to 192.168.2.1 and 192.168.3.1. How do I stop this from happening. Disabling it in the preferences panel and resetting the IP addresses on each interface get wiped out once the server is rebooted.

I've got a new Mac Mini Server that I'm using to set up file sharing for the first time. I've enabled OpenDirectory and verified that the users I'm creating are being created in (they show up in the Server app and Workgroup Manager app, but not in System Preferences | Users).Â
File sharing seems to be working fine, but I don't like the fact that each user has access to their home folder share when they connect to the server using a mac elsewhere on the network. I prefer only the shares I explicitly set up to be available.Â
Thus, a couple questionsWhy is there a home folder created on the server at all? Do I really need a /users/johndoe folder for each and every account in OD?How can I configure sharing such that I won't see the home folder when I connect from another mac on the network? After updating my new iMac to 10.7.4. My internet sharing suddenly doesn't work any more. I connect my ipad and iphone via the wifi. It will drop out after a very short time, about 10 seconds of Facetime, so I turn off the wifi, then the internet sharing then reboot everything but nothing seems to work. It worked perfectly in 10.7.3 but now I can't use the internet on my ipad.

I have just finished setting up my first Lion Server from scratch on a Mac Mini with dual 500GB Drives which I set up as RAID 1. I have the server exactly as I want it, and before the users start logging on and it gets all screwed up I would like to create a disk image of it so that I could reinstall if necessary w/o having to start from scratch.Â
Is the process of creating a disk image for a RAID 1 any different than that of a disk image from a single drive set up? Will Disk utility just see this as a single volume or will it want to create a disk image of the entire RAID? i.e will the disk image be 1 TB (500 GB x 2)? And when it comes to reimaging my RAID, will I just recreate a RAID 1 and be able to write to it from that disk image?Â
Has anyone noticed a strange 10 user file sharing limit after upgrading to 10.7.4 server? Using DeployStudio to mass deploy 10.7.4 Lion images in a school. Since upgrading to 10.7.4 server, I am now limited to 10 logins on the repository. Thought this might be a DeployStudio issue, but it seems more like the server is imposing the restriction. If I do a manual login to the shared folder where the image files are kept on the server, I can only do it from 10 computers and computer 11 will refuse to login.

I have created a group and populated it with the names/accounts of those that will be using the server.Â
I have added both installed drives as share points, the smaller one is the system/boot drive and the larger one contains the video and images (both drives are internally-mounted). I've also enabled the group's permission to read/write.Â
We are able to login to the server via afp but we only see our individual home directories on the system/boot drive.Â

Problem: After recent update to Lion 10.7.4, my Wi-Fi signal via Internet Sharing keeps dropping. Have multiple iDevices failing that were working perfectly with 10.7.3 (Nook and iPhone 4). iPhone shows full Wi-Fi signal strength and works for a short time after reset (via Wi-Fi off/on, Internet Sharing off/on). Continues to show full Wi-Fi signal strength but loses connection after 1-2 minutes. And not just internet connection; I can't transfer pics/vids from iPhone to iMac either. Have switched to a channel no one nearby is using (channel 9) to no avail.

I just wanted to add a sharing only user for my girlfriends new MacBook that she could use to connect to a shared Time Machine Volume. If I add a new standard user, this user can connect to my server via finder (connect as...) and see the shared drives. If the same user tries to connect to the Time Machine Backup Volume via the settings dialog, it receives an error message (OSStatus-error 5). If I add a sharing only user, this user cannot connect via finder or Time Machine (same error).
The clients console states the following error message:

For specific reasons, I needed to connect my Synology DS211 NAS to my iMac directly via its ethernet port. I discovered that if I share my wireless internet connection (coming from my cable modem/wireless router) from wireless to ethernet, then the NAS would get the IP stuff it needed to show up. did that, voila, NAS is acting like a glorified external hard drive. BUT, when I did that, I lost all internet connectivity on my iMac. Still have full wireless signal. preferences pane says I'm fully connected to my network with an IP address, but safari always fails to pull up any webpages, saying I'm not connected to the internet.As soon as turn off the ethernet PORT, it all starts working again. And to make it even crazier, I discovered that if I leave sharing my wireless internet via my ethernet port ON, but turn off the ethernet port (in pref pane), I can STILL access the NAS just like before. That makes no sense - I'm sharing my internet via a port I have turned off, but it works? Anyway, why would Iose my airport wireless internet connection when the ethernet port is on - configured manually?

I want to setup a mail server from a Mac OS X server machine.
I used the standard configuration as the wizard is going to setup all the services automatically.
I have an email of the kind server.com
After the finish of the configuration all the system was working perfectly, except one thing. I could not browse to any .com address I could not resolve the apple.com address. This is actually a DNS server issue and as my DNS server is hosted to my ISP, I closed the DNS service from the Server admin app. Now I could browse to .com addresses but all the settings to the client computers need to be done manually. Meaning not from the Directory utility. The problem is that the address of the server was changed from server.com to server.local so all the settings now are server.local, including my email address that changed from user@server.com to user@server.local that cannot be replayed from the recipient
My Question is can I change the default configuration settings that the directory utility sets?? or do any other configuration to solve the issue.
Also in the webmail when I send an email the email of the sender is the username continued by the ISP's internal static IP host which is different to my server.com. I found a solution to change the email from the personal information tag of the options button. Can I also pre configure these settings to be ready as a new user is created??
I've googled and searched, I can't see what I'm missing, so I am turning to the community for help, because I simply don't get this. I own 2 domain names. I'd like to use the build in Mail Server application into SL Server, so if your suggestion is using another mail server, please don't post that.Â
Let's say my domain's are domain1.com and domain2.com I've looked at the Mail Server Admin user guide, and I've followed a couple of wizzards, and... all in all, I am getting no where. Let's also say my email client is my iPhone.Â
Ok, so domain1.com currently has no email with my current provider, and domain2.com currently has email from my current provider, it's my desire to eventually switch this, but experimenting on domain1.com will do no harm, so I am experimenting on this. Both domains give me the ability to point to an mx address.Â
Here's what I've done. I've got my user created in Workgroup Administrator, and I am confiuguring my LDAP3v, and I am authenticated enough to create and delete users.Â
***I Should note that DNS is currently disabled, I gathered from all my reading that I don't need the DNS enabled because I manually put in the MX record to mail.domain1.com and domain1.com is correctly identified. The server is also the webserver, and all the web server functions are working as expected! I don't know if not having the DNS enabled is holding me back or not ***Â
1st, I enabled the mail service in the Server Admin. My domain name is ServerName.local and my host name is mail.domain1.com (I created an a entry in my dns settings for that). Enable SMTP is set, IMAP and POP are enabled as well.
I don't intend on setting a relay, because I want this server to do send email out. I do have some cases where I send a mass email out, not for spam but for Christmas card purposes, and I think this is a good free way to not have to limit myself to batches of 50 or so.
I have my created SSL certificate, and havce only the Kerberos and CRAM-MD5 settings set in the security.
In my hosting section, I have enabled Virtual hosting, and listed my domain1.com and domain2.com below.
Now in workgroup manager, I've connected to my LDAP3v database and created a test user, and a test group. In the server admin, I added the test group to the list of authenticated mail users. I made my test user a member of the test group, and made that his default group. I enabled the mail service, and set the mail server which is ServerName.local, and enabled POP and IMAP.Â
That's it. I've done nothing in terminal, just that. I was getting a user unable to authenticate error, it was able to download the certificate though. Then I realzed I had an MXE defined in my settings for my DNS domain manager. So I changed to an MX, to mail.domain1.com and then I created mail.domain1.com pointing to the same IP address as domain1.com, and unfortunately the DNS records haven't updated yet, because I initially didn't create the mail.domain1.com entry, and now it's saying the server isn't responding, so I am anxiously awaiting an update from the DNS in the world to see if the issue has now cleared up.Â

After switching to a new provider and getting a new dsl modem (a fritz!box fon 7390) I tried to setup my homenetwork again. Now the weird thing is: my Mac Mini running OSX Lion Server doesn't seem to be able to connect to the internet over its ethernet port, only when using a WiFi connection...When it's connected with ethernet it can reach the dsl modem without any problems, but it can't ping/telnet or anything else through, only over WiFi... As long as I use the mini servers WiFi connection everything works fine, but that doesn't make any sense to me.I've checked the servers setting and the Fritz!box settings and I can't seem to find anything obvious. Of course I could just go on and use the WiFi connection...
ps: all the other computers can connect fine using either wifi or regular lan connection... I even tried the exact same cable with another laptop just to make sure...

I have a MacBook OS X 10.5.7. None of the QuickTime streaming choices worked for playing videos from the internet correctly (they kept starting, then stopping before going on). My internet provider is Verizon DSL. When I checked my connection speed, none of the numbers matched any of the QuickTime choices and I got a message saying my PC had not been optimized and another message saying that the Verizon optimizer is not compatible with Mac. I was directed to websites for broadband tuners. I downloaded a tuner (IPNetTunerX) and got video from the internet to show correctly with the tuner set to "DSL with PPPoE" and QuickTime set to "112Kbps Dual ISDN/DSL" and "Instant on" set to "off". The tuner is only a trial version. Is there any way I can accomplish the same thing without having to buy the tuner?
