Mac Mini :: Can't Connect To The IMac For File Sharing
Oct 12, 2010I have a 24" iMac, a 13" MBP, and a Mini, all running Snow Leopard. There's also an iBook G4 running Leopard which I still use now and then. My problem is that I can't connect to the iMac for file sharing; it keeps coming up with "Connection failed" and I've done more troubleshooting for it than I want to so I'm looking for an alternate way to be able to access files that I store on the iMac. Strangely enough the iMac can connect to all the other systems with no problems and the other systems can all connect to each other as well. I've spent hours checking configurations on sharing and can't find anything wrong
I tried using Dropbox, and that would have been a perfect solution except for the fact that one important file that I wanted to share is a Quicken data file, which can NOT be handled by Dropbox (the file gets corrupted, and the Dropbox forum states it's a known issue but no fix is planned). If it had not been for the Quicken data file, Dropbox would have been perfect.
Now I am looking for alternatives. I'm considering the following options:
1. Time Capsule - this is really for use via Time Machine and I already have a wireless network that runs fine. Plus the iMac and Mini already have external firewire drives that handle Time Machine just fine. Reviews tell me it's not all that the time capsule is not suitable just for file store. Cost about $300.
2. Some kind of NAS. I've looked at the different ones, but it seems they don't all support the AFP very well. Some of them require a driver to be installed on the Mac, which I think introduces another option for something to go wrong and which could break with an OSx update. Worse yet, some only allow one system to read and write and others can only read. Cost seems to be anywhere from $400 and up to godawful.
3.Mac mini with no keyboard, mouse, or display (after setup that is). This would be the easiest to hook up and adding extra storage would be easy. Cost $699. As far as I can tell, once I've setup the system I would not need they keyboard, mouse, or display.
4. Other options?

May 26, 2010I have a Mac Mini and my brother has one also. We live in different cities. Both of us want to be able to connect to each ones computer to swap files back and forth. Is there a way to do this within the OSX or do we need some type of third party software? I know there is Logmein, but the free version doesn't allow file swapping... only the Pro version does. Could you use an FTP client like Filezilla?

Jun 20, 2014If I have file sharing turned on on my macbook pro retina (late 2013 model) I cannot put it to sleep at all. The manual sleep option from the apple menu does nothing apart from dimming the display. The computer stays on. This is plainly a bug.
Steps to reproduce:
turn on network file sharing.
have a client connect to your mac (he does not need to stay actively connected and using filesystem at the moment of sleep attempt).
Then choose sleep from the apple menu
result: no sleep.

Sep 10, 2014Just bought Mac Mini with OSX Server. Windows 8.1 machine cannot see file sharing. All Mac's on network have no trouble logging in. What do I need to do to see the server for file sharing on the windows machine?

OS X Mavericks :: File Sharing Name Has A -1 Appended To The Share
Aug 21, 2014I had an end user create a shared folder on a new server. He did this incorrectly, and I had to fix the sharing permissions, folder location, etc. When I moved the shared folder, it seemed to have caused an issue with the list of available shares, and when connecting to the shared folder it now is appended with a -1 (SHARE-1). I believe this is because the preference file for the shared folders still has the legacy folder listed or there is a legacy cache somewhere that I can't find.
I've cleared DNS cache, used Onyx to clear out all other caches, I've removed AFPconfig and afp files in etc, I've removed the share and restarted the server and set up the share again, manually unloaded and relaunched com.apple.applefileshare.plist. Probably even more stuff I've done but can't remember. I can't get rid of that pesky -1 on the end of the share name.

OS X Mavericks :: Sharing A Folder Over Internet For File Transfer
Aug 24, 2014my internet connection speed is sufficient to handle the largish files I may have to deal with. I have recently moved house and gone from an area with high speed fibre optic broadband to an area where this isn't available and as such my speeds are significantly lower than before. Downloading isn't shouldn't be such a problem - I have gone from 30mbs downstream to about 5mbs. In tests I have been able to download fairly large files in an acceptable time. Uploading finished work is more of a concern as the upstream is severally nobbled. if there is a way to set a folder on my Mac that my client could access and download from without me first having to upload to a server (Dropbox, WeTransfer or FTP)? Is this possible and if so would this make a difference in terms of speed or would the recipient still be restricted by my upload speeds

Is it possible, however, just to share files in A with B and leave C unaccessible to A and B? To put this in short, may I share files to a specific user on the network instead of everyone?

Mar 26, 2012I have an IMac running 10.7 and G5 running 10.5.8 the G5 we are using as an in house server. It working fine for 5 months then our internet went down and now it no longer works. This is how I have it set up. on the g5 I have file sharing turned on and the folder I would like to share set to share. Then I made logins for for the computer I want to share the folder with. The on the IMac I would go to connect to server and the g5 would show up then it would ask me to login so I did. Everthing worked fine but now when I try to login it just gives me the spinning wheel but never logs in why is it doing this? I have restarted both computers and I have deleted my login and re added it. But still the same thing.

I dont see it on my mac. All I see is Directory and Directory Utility thats it. I have the most up to date mac 10.5.6.

Since the upgrade they are unable to connect to a file share simply by clicking on the server in a Finder window and then clicking on the "Connect As..." button. (As I understand it, this is the Bonjour service.) This has worked in the past and works on machines running 10.8.x
I am able to connect to the very same file share if I use "Connect to Server" and type in the afp:// address.
Nothing has changed in the network that I'm aware of.

The New User does have file sharing disabled, and non of its folder can be accessed; so, it's working Ok for this New User.

Aug 24, 2014I bought my first iMac yesterday and am slowly getting to grips with it. I seem to have got totally stuck trying to connect my iPhone or the kids iPods.
When I connect by the cable, the phone charges fine.
The computer doesn't recognise that the phone exists though - either in uTunes or when i look in Finder.
I checked in system information, under hardware - USB, and it listed the phone there fine. (under the USB 3.0 high speed hub)
I have tried putting making the sidebar visible on iTunes and this made no difference.
It doesn't even register it as a camera or external storage in Finder
It's an iPhone 4, and I haven't updated the OS recently so it is still on iOS 6.
I've also not been able to get the iMac to recognise my printer throughout the wifi - I'm not bothered about fixing this just yet - just concentrating on one w=thing at a time, but mentioned it incase it's relevant.

The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:Three Ethernet Cables Now how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? Also, I do not want to use CDs and have no CDs that came with the computers. I want to put Xubuntu on the eMac and Debian on the iMacs and erase the rest of the Hard Drives. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4 in my Signature.

Aug 23, 2014Out of the blue my Mac suddenly is devoting a huge amount of ram to file cache. I have 32 Gigs of Ram and curretly 27 gigs of that is devoted to file cache. I am only running mail, iTunes and Chrome and I have 7 mg of ram left. What could be causing this and is there a fix?
