OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Broken Folder Icon On Start Up After Reinstall?
Apr 21, 2012
Yesterday I had to reinstall Leopard on my Mac. Everything was going fine until a little while ago I turned on my Mac, and after the startup sound and a few moments of the grey Apple, a No Access symbol appeared - or a "broken folder" icon as they call it in the support pages. Suffice to say there was a panic after the events of yesterday and I made several attempts to restart, but the "broken folder" icon keeps appearing and noting happens. I have been able to boot to an external drive.
I first tried to reset NVRAM and reselect startup volume, by holding down X on startup. It showed me a message - "efiboot loaded from device.....error loading kernel". I then tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM - [URL] - but this just brought up the "broken folder" icon again - and if left for long enough a grey folder icon with a ? on it begins flashing on the screen. As best I can tell my only remaining option is to reinstall Leopard.

I turned my 2011 iMac on this morning but it never loaded past the startup screen. Eventually the Apple icon which is usually displayed on the screen turned into the broken folder symbol. I read some articles on how to fix this and tried resetting the NVRAM and PRAM, but that didn't work. I was going to try reinstalling OS X next, but putting the disc into the driver doesn't appear to do anything, and now I can't eject it.

This morning I woke to a spinning disk icon on my 2007 Mac Pro. I've restarted it several times but can't get past that part. Also of note is that is the graphics displaying the spinning disk icon is broken up as if the video drivers aren't properly installed. I don't have a second Mac to run a diagnostic. I'm down to my iPhone 4 for Internet resources.

According to my lil bro, the computer landed screen down. Now whenever he tries booting his Mac, a folder icon appears on the screen and the HDD makes a continuous skipping noise. I'm guessing a new HDD will fix the problem?

disk utility is unable to repair the "Macintosh HD" disk. Re-installing mountain lion is not an option due to the computer's inability to detect the HDD disk. How do I differentiate between a corrupted (dead) hard drive or a broken SATA cable (in which acts as a medium)?Â

This morning when I turned on my Imac, it presented me with the Mac HD icon, I had to select this to continue with the boot.Â
I've checked the startup options and the correct (and only) drive is selected, re selected it a few times just in case but this didnt have any effect.Â
Checked that none of my keyboard keys are sticking by unpluging it during the boot so the keyboard couldn't interfere, still the same.Â
I've tried a pram reset but don't seem to have any joy getting this to work. I hold the correct sequence of keys down just after the chimes ( cmd, option p and r) but that doesn't seem to get me the 2nd chime. Have no idea what I'm doing wrong.Â
Is this a sign my HDD is going? I use the system for a lot of video editing and photo editing, could this amout of usuage cause any problemsÂ

I installed SL on my iMac last week and changed the icon for the applications folder on my dock - no problem. Did the same for my Macbook last night and now the applications folder on both docks keeps disappearing. I use Mobile Me to sync the docks. I've dragged the folder from Finder into the dock and it stays briefly and then disappears.

Last night (really late) I accidentally dragged the Application icon off the dock. I found another, dragged it on - now a Contact icon sits right on top of it so you cannot hardly see the Application file. How do I separate them? I deleted the other Contact icon, thinking that would do the trick, but no.

When i turned on my iMac I was surprised to see a folder icon blinking as it was running fine before this. I didn't delete or install anything. Â
My DVD drive does not read properly so i am unable to boot from the installation disk, tried to boot using BootCD from Charles Soft that didnt work either. Even tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, unplugged keyboard and LAN cable as well but still no luck. Â
Read many articles online regarding this issue and it seems that my hard disk must have crashed. I don't have backup of any files.Â

How do you change the hard drive icon picture in the top right corner to look like the macbook pro computer? I've seen this on a couple people's desktops and was just wondering how you do it. Also, how do you change the folder icon to something that looks cooler.

I'm working away today on my iMac OS X 10.6.4 mainly just screwing off visiting social networking sites on the web. Later, I minimize my windows, and notice the icons on my desktop are a little strange. Upon further research, all the folder icons are gone (or they are transparent). You can see the folder name, but no icon associated with the folder. Also, all my pdf, jpg, png, etc are now associated with Adobe (either Acrobat or Photoshop CS). They used to be associated with the Application "Preview". I've rebooted and tried a lot of other things to restore icons, and nothing has worked. Here is what I have found. I dont think it's an icon problem, I think it's a "Preview" problem. If I click on the "Preview" icon nothing happens. If I right click on a jpg (for instance), and select "Open With" - Preview is not there. If I Choose "Open With Other..." within the Application folder, "Preview" is grayed out. If I select "Enable All Applications" then "Preview" is no longer grayed out. But when I select it, and select "Open", nothing happens.
Everything "appears" to be working normally. Just I no longer have any folder icons on the desktop or within finder. And I am no longer able to open anything within "Preview" All my files are now associated with another application (which works fine) but not with preview. I finally found a way to copy a folder icon to the "invisible folder". If, for example, I right click on my "DropBox" folder (which I can see) and select Get Info, I can copy that icon to a "Normal/Default" folder such as Documents. So I did that to about a dozen folder and it worked. But there is no way I'm going to do that to 1000 folders! Today, Aug 27, I get a security update and a few other things from Apple and I install them. Then I'm asked to reboot. After I install the updates, and reboot my iMac, even the folder I cut n pasted are now gone. And so are the jpg gif and pdf icons are now gone too. Prior to the update, the pdf, jpg and gif files had a Photoshop CS icon (instead of the previous "Preview" icon and preview that I'm trying to restore.). Now even the Photoshop and Adobe icons are gone.....

I'm having serious issue on my MacPro 10.7.4, as I can't log in any more. My setup: System 10.7.4 on MacPro SSD (internal SSD)Data on my software RAID0 on 2 internal HD. Unfortunately I had the bad idea to move my home folder on the RAID0 cluster. One of the 2 hard drives just died, making impossible to reach any data on this side! So now, I just get an error trying to log back, as I guess the system can't find my home folder.
I just set up a second partition on my SSD, installed lion again and boot from here. So I can have access to the original SSD file system. I'd like to modify some files to update the path to a new home folder. (not on the RAID obviously but still on SSD). Could be done by terminal / command line. I used to know how to do that on linux by modify /etc/password, but I can't find the same files on OSX. How to modify / update the system user path, so I could boot again from by previous partition?

I have a new MP Quad and I am noticing that I am always having to repair my startup disk. I will notice the system start to slow down, I will have Onyx verify startup disk and it tells me to repair it. I will boot to SL DVD, repair the disk and it will run fine for awhile but eventually end up in the same situation. Do I need to reinstall SL or is this a hardware issue?

I have, somehow, reset my entire OSX. The Dock is now huge, all of my icons are now reset to the default ones when I originally bought the Macbook Pro. The software is still there but the icons have been reset. The icon no longer bounces when I open it.
And I know exactly why. I was in Windows through bootcamp doing routine maintenance and decided to do a full scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. I forgot to have it ignore the E:/ drive which is where MacOSX installed. It must have got 25% through scanning it before I realized it. I don't even know if that can cause a problem but it obviously did. I booted into OSX just to double check everything was ok. It loaded fine, all icons where there and seemed like everything was ok. Except the icons weren't bouncing when I opened up an application even though it was checked in the preferences. This frustrated me so I rebooted again to see if that would fix the issue and now here I am. Completely back to factory defaults. My software is still there but the Dock reset itself and it seems as if other things reset. I'm doomed. So how do I start a reinstall process? Insert the Snow Leapord disk?

I am having volume issues on my 2011 MPB running Lion. When I start my computer it makes the start up noise, and I am also running Windows 7 with BootCamp, and the volume works there. On my Mac side however, I am getting a broken icon symbol when I hit the volume buttons, and I also cannot control volume throung the pull dowm bar on the upper portion of the screen. No volume is working. I have done all my updates, and I have reset my PRAM (which was only a temporary fix). Â

I am soon (Apple can release the i5/i7 Macbook Pros anytime) to become a Mac user. I have been a *nix developer for years. What is the "best practice" for application installation. Is it common for people to create a personal Applications folder? I am thinking of what happens when I have to upgrade to a newer version of Os X. I am hoping to not have to re-install all of my apps. On my Linux laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 x64), I install all applications in /opt, which I just backup before doing an upgrade.

I run CheckPoint Full Disk Encryption on my MBP 13. It normally has a status icon in the menu bar that I can right click on to get a status of the the program.
Well it is missing now however there is still a process being shown in the Activity Monitor, FDEStatusMenu, that is for that.
Is there anyway I could go into Terminal and restart that show it shows the icon? (There are no menu options to show it)

I have an iBook g4 that is just totally messed up. The menu bar at the top does not show up except for the right side(sound, clock, power). Also, whenever I click on an application on the dock the icon reacts, but never starts the application.
I wish I could give more information as relates to the specs, but I can't access any services.
