OS X :: Create Personal Application Folder - Reinstall?
Mar 3, 2010I am soon (Apple can release the i5/i7 Macbook Pros anytime) to become a Mac user. I have been a *nix developer for years. What is the "best practice" for application installation. Is it common for people to create a personal Applications folder? I am thinking of what happens when I have to upgrade to a newer version of Os X. I am hoping to not have to re-install all of my apps. On my Linux laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 x64), I install all applications in /opt, which I just backup before doing an upgrade.

May 16, 2012I turned my 2011 iMac on this morning but it never loaded past the startup screen. Eventually the Apple icon which is usually displayed on the screen turned into the broken folder symbol. I read some articles on how to fix this and tried resetting the NVRAM and PRAM, but that didn't work. I was going to try reinstalling OS X next, but putting the disc into the driver doesn't appear to do anything, and now I can't eject it.

May 23, 2012I am unable to fully access an application or even open a folder. If I press F10, I can see the folder for example but I cannot click on it. I have shut the system off and restarted and still no change.

Aug 29, 2014I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.Â
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.Â
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

Dec 26, 2008There was some application that I used a while ago when "activity monitor" mysteriously disappeared from my system that let me reinstall it from the OS X install disc without having to do a complete reinstall of the OS. Does anyone know what i am talking about, I cannot remember what it is called. It is a third party utility.

OS X :: Photo Booth Application Broke - Need To Reinstall Leopard
Aug 21, 2009My Photo Booth application was acting very weird so I called Apple support and they told me Photo Booth was "broken" and the only way to fix it is to Archive and Install Leopard. I really don't want to go through all this trouble. So I was wondering if it would be possible to just wait for Snow Leopard to come out and then install Snow Leopard? Will Snow Leopard reinstall all my applications or will it just upgrade the OS, leaving the applications alone?

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Broken Folder Icon On Start Up After Reinstall?
Apr 21, 2012Yesterday I had to reinstall Leopard on my Mac. Everything was going fine until a little while ago I turned on my Mac, and after the startup sound and a few moments of the grey Apple, a No Access symbol appeared - or a "broken folder" icon as they call it in the support pages. Suffice to say there was a panic after the events of yesterday and I made several attempts to restart, but the "broken folder" icon keeps appearing and noting happens. I have been able to boot to an external drive.
I first tried to reset NVRAM and reselect startup volume, by holding down X on startup. It showed me a message - "efiboot loaded from device.....error loading kernel". I then tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM - [URL] - but this just brought up the "broken folder" icon again - and if left for long enough a grey folder icon with a ? on it begins flashing on the screen. As best I can tell my only remaining option is to reinstall Leopard.

Nov 22, 2010I downloaded an app called Cyberduck, and put it in my Applications folder, as you normally would. But when I open it, it immediately closes again.What's weird is if I put the file in any other folder (Desktop, Downloads, etc) and open it, it opens fine, stays open, and works great.If I put it back in my Applications folder, problem returns.This has happened with a few versions of Cyberduck, in a few different 10.6.x versions of OS X, and both on my old iMac and new MBP.I've never seen this with any other program. Any ideas?

Aug 9, 2009I recently downloaded Candybar and switched some of my icons / dock.
Now when I turn on my computer a few of the icon show a "?" - for example, program called "things for mac". This application does not show up in the candybar app folder.
When I activate the program it shows the correct icon, but the ? reoccurs when I turn off/on computer.
Anyway to keep the icons there without having to activate the program to show the icon? Frustrating that I turn on my computer and have "?" in my dock.
OS X :: Any Application To Backup Selective Folder
Oct 12, 2009What's the best application to selectively back up folders? Both Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner erase the continents of the external hard drive before backup, so those won't work for me. I'm not really looking to make a bootable clone of my hard drive anyway. I'd just like to back up some folders and avoid the hassle of drag-and-drop. Shareware is fine if it's reasonably priced.

and now Quicksilver wont work. My hotkey wont bring it up, though I see in open when I log in. I also can't just open it from my applications folder. Because I don't have it visible in my dock there is no way I can get to it.
I've tried deleting the plug-in in the plug-ins folder, but it still wont work.
Does anyone know another way to open it up, or some other way of fixing this problem?
OS X :: Preview Application Broken - No Folder Icons
Aug 27, 2010I'm working away today on my iMac OS X 10.6.4 mainly just screwing off visiting social networking sites on the web. Later, I minimize my windows, and notice the icons on my desktop are a little strange. Upon further research, all the folder icons are gone (or they are transparent). You can see the folder name, but no icon associated with the folder. Also, all my pdf, jpg, png, etc are now associated with Adobe (either Acrobat or Photoshop CS). They used to be associated with the Application "Preview". I've rebooted and tried a lot of other things to restore icons, and nothing has worked. Here is what I have found. I dont think it's an icon problem, I think it's a "Preview" problem. If I click on the "Preview" icon nothing happens. If I right click on a jpg (for instance), and select "Open With" - Preview is not there. If I Choose "Open With Other..." within the Application folder, "Preview" is grayed out. If I select "Enable All Applications" then "Preview" is no longer grayed out. But when I select it, and select "Open", nothing happens.
Everything "appears" to be working normally. Just I no longer have any folder icons on the desktop or within finder. And I am no longer able to open anything within "Preview" All my files are now associated with another application (which works fine) but not with preview. I finally found a way to copy a folder icon to the "invisible folder". If, for example, I right click on my "DropBox" folder (which I can see) and select Get Info, I can copy that icon to a "Normal/Default" folder such as Documents. So I did that to about a dozen folder and it worked. But there is no way I'm going to do that to 1000 folders! Today, Aug 27, I get a security update and a few other things from Apple and I install them. Then I'm asked to reboot. After I install the updates, and reboot my iMac, even the folder I cut n pasted are now gone. And so are the jpg gif and pdf icons are now gone too. Prior to the update, the pdf, jpg and gif files had a Photoshop CS icon (instead of the previous "Preview" icon and preview that I'm trying to restore.). Now even the Photoshop and Adobe icons are gone.....
OS X :: Application Folder Copy In User Menu?
Sep 16, 2010I seem to have lost my Applications folder from my User menu under Places in Finder. It is still present however, in the Macintosh HD menu under Devices. So I thought I would just drag it to my User menu where there was one before, however it started to copy the folder there. Is this the correct way to get it back there, should it in fact be copying the Application folder? Seems like a waste of nearly 11GB to simply have a copy there.

Nov 26, 2009I was reviewing Apple Support's Mac 101, Files and Folders Lesson and I noted that compared to some of their screenshot application items (Finder/MacIntosh HD/Applications), I have an empty space where, I assume, application folders where. I have a blank spot (Sorted by Name) after the Address Book (which I think was the AppleScript folder), a blank sport after the DVD Player (which I think was Expose), and a couple others. Where did my application icons go! I still have the Expose feature if I use the mouse, but I'm curious as to why they no longer appear in the folder. Can I, without much trouble, reload all applications from my Snow Leopard upgrade disk? If so, how? My iMac is an early 2009, 24" w/ 2.66Ghz processor.
