OS X :: Using IMBP 13" (2009 Revision) Display A Prohibition Sign Upon Boot Up?
Jan 25, 2010
I'm new to this OS, which is a iMBP 13" (2009 revision). I'm experiencing abnormal bootup. The bootup screen display a prohibition sign upon bootup after installing Security Update 2010-001 for Snow Leopard. There is no error message I can write down nor excessive fan noise coming out from the laptop.

Ok lately My Mac OS X has crashed on me and I am now stuck on my windows bootcamp partition.
My CD drive is broken so I bought a new external combo drive which works fine! When i go to boot the cd It loads up fine on the alt/option screen however when it goes to the loading the cd (the apple sign) it stays there for a couple of minutes (no loading wheel) and then turns into a prohibition sign!My mac drive before this was formatted as it was faulty however it is still of the MAC format! (HSF or something)

iMac Info: 24" Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66Ghz, 4GB Ram, running Snow Leopard, yadda yadda
The latest software update notice I received informed me the following new software was available:
* Performance Update (version 1.0)
* iMovie Update (version 8.0.5)
I told it to install the updates, after which the computer had to be restarted. Upon restart the computer seems to be restarting normally, ie: the bell tolls and the Apple symbol shows above the spinning icon. But after what seems like a very long time a "no symbol" aka "prohibition sign" takes the place of the Apple logo, and the spinning icon remains. Nothing else happens. To see the screen I'm referring to check this image:
http://donnypauling.com/images/prohibitionsign.jpg
Here's what I have done so far:
* I called expert case support and we tried a few things. The guy I talked to decided that I needed to use my snow leopard disk to use time machine to restore my system to the way it was before the software updates. He figured something must have been corrupted in the software update. I couldn't find my Snow Leopard disk so he emailed me instructions to follow when I finally found it.
* After finally finding the disk I followed his instructions and restored my system to an October 8th backup.
* Upon restart all was supposed to be well. That didn't happen. The same problem persists.
* Support is now closed, so here I am searching these discussion forums. One thread mentioned a similar problem and it was recommended that the person start in safe mode and repair disk permissions. Sure enough, my iMac starts in Safe Mode. I repaired disk permissions. Restarted the iMac. The same problem still exists.

I have a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 933Mhz running OS X 10.4.11. Ever since I upgraded from Vs. OS X 10.4, I have had problems with my browsers. When I boot up I get an alert message with a red sign that shows for about two or three quick seconds. I am not able to read what it states. Can someone tell me how to bring up this alert message. I think it might have something to do with how my browser is not functioning properly. I can't load up some pages with my Safari or FireFox browsers; I get a blank screen, but the URL shows up with some additional information. I also have a 2009 Mac Pro that does not have this problem with loading up web site pages.

I have a black MacBook that I got about 2 years ago, running OS X 10.5. I had about 10 GB free space. It's been working fine until this unfortunate event. Let me explain.
I was recently working with my mac as usual (browsing the web, downloading torrents, reading an ebook, ect). I tried to load [URL] in firefox, when it froze. Nothing new, so I tried to open up force quit. Nothing I clicked on responded. It was frozen. I also heard some weird "tinking" noises from inside the machine that I had never heard before. So, I inferred I should force shut down. I held down the power button, and it turned off. I hit it again to turn it back on. I saw a grey screen and an apple and heard the"dinggggg" noise we've all come to love like usual. But, suddenly the apple changes to a circle with a line through it, which I've dubbed a stop sign. It just stays like this. I can turn it off, and try again and the same thing happens. I've tried it like 10 times. (I know, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.
This is getting my adrenaline pumping, and I can't figure out what to do. Should I reset the NVRAM and PRAM like Apple says? I'm at a loss. Right now I'm using my friend's computer (running Vista ugh) to type this.

I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro system (Mac Pro 4,1) and I've had this system for 3 years already and have been working under OS X with this system ever since I purchased it. However, when I tried to boot off my Windows disk, something very interesting happens. The Mac Pro WILL NOT boot up off the Windows disk or a known working Windows partition if two monitors are connected. Upon holding down the option key and selecting the Windows partition, I will get a black screen on one monitor (the one connected via Mini Displayport) and the other screen receives no signal and will enter standby and the system is halted. It does not respond to keystrokes, there is no hard drive activity, no measured power increase on the UPS, no apparent network activity, nothing. The only way to exit this scenario (from what I can tell) is to power off the machine, disconnect the display on DVI, power on the machine again, select the Windows partition wait for the system to reach the login window and reconnect the DVI monitor (at which time Windows recognizes it immediately and the system works fine again).
I have two Samsung P2350 monitors attached to an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB, from Apple). One is monitor is connected via directly DVI and the other is using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter. Both monitors work fine under OS X with no issue. At first, I thought that this may be a driver issue on the Windows side and after installing all the latest updates and drivers the issue is still apparent. From what I can tell, this doesn't seem like a software issue but rather a firmware or EFI issue as this happens before Windows even loads. For the record, I am running all the latest software builds on the OS X side (10.7.4, not that it would really matter at this point). I have also disconnected all unnecessary equipment in a trial and error scenario but the results are still the same. The system passes all ASD testing. The full specification of the computer and all connected equipment are as follows:
2009 Mac Pro (4,1) 8-Core
2x Intel Xeon Nehalem 2.66GHz Quad-Core CPUs
16GB DDR3 ECC 1066MHz RAM (Apple Branded)
Two OWC 120GB SSDs (One for OS X, the other for Windows 7 x64) - These are in place of my optical drives.
4x 2TB WD Black Hard drives for storage.
Two Samsung P2350 Monitors connected via DVI. (One using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter).

I have a Mac Mini (late 2009) and I have connected two monitors via a VGA splitter. Both screens are working and displaying the image of the screen, but I want an extended desktop and when I try to change the display preferences it says "the arrangements pane has been hidden because you only have one monitor connected".Detect displays does not work, and neither does restarting the computer/turning screens on and off.

I bought a displayport to minidisplay port cable and connected to my iMac 27; nothing is happening. My laptop says no displays detected and the iMac does nothing when i press command-F2...i've also tried command-F2-Fn. It doesnt even seem to respond to command-F2. Also under the keyboard shortcuts menu there are only two shortcuts for displays and its to dim and brigthen the display. The iMac and PC are both up to date with software; OSx 10.7.4 Lion.

Hi Folks. Minor problem with the new system...
Here's the situ:
32Gb Boot Camp partition created and installed XP SP2 from original disc.
Inserted Mac Pro DVD to install the driver set (which was Boot Camp 2.1)
Everything working correctly, except the sound - which comes out both the Mac Pro internal speaker and the LEFT channel of my external amplifier.Everything working fine through Mac OS X as expected.
In Windows, I can change the audio out device from Realtek Audio out to the USB audio (which is the Apple Cinema Display speakers) but this is far from ideal for games, which is the only reason I'm installing XP. I have installed XPSP3 since and found a more up to date Realtek HD audio driver for XP, but no change.
Has anyone experienced this? I may try to install XP again, install XPSP3, then install all the drivers manually as required to see if that changes anything.

Here's a fun problem. After installing Sophos anti-virus and starting a (VERY slow) full scan, a day or two later I found my iMac frozen at the screensaver. It was completely unresponsive so I did a hard reboot, at which point it got as far as starting to boot Lion (apple logo on screen, spinning indicator showing) before stalling indefinitely in that state with the indicator spinning.
I restarted and booted from the recovery partition, launched disk utility, and discovered that the SMART status of the drive was "failing". The machine would still boot from the recovery partition and my boot camp partition, but I assumed that the disk failing was why the OSX partition wouldn't boot (the recovery partition worked, as did the windows 7 bootcamp partition). I replaced the factory-installed internal HDD with another of the same make, model, and capacity (Seagate 1TB), and performed a restore from the Time Machine backup on my Drobo.
The result was the same as the original problem - it wouldn't boot, hung with the indicator spinning. Thinking that the Sophos scan was somehow responsible (in-progress when the last TM backup was made) I tried restoring to a backup a few days older, (to the best of my recall from BEFORE I downloaded Sophos) only to have the same result.
Anyone have any ideas? I made a clean install of Lion (using the recovery partition on my old internal HDD, now connected externally via USB) to an external drive while I was waiting for the replacement hard disk to arrive, and it boots fine from that. I haven't tried a clean install to the internal HDD yet, as I'd obviously prefer to recover my installed apps as they were before, that being the point of a Time Machine backup, right?

the other night my girlfriends white 2009 Macbook (was updated to lion) stopped recognizing the battery. Only would boot when plugged into AC. I have other Macs so I tried different power adapters and switching in a battery that I knew was charged from another Macbook, and still did not recognize. Both batteries show 80% full or more when button pressed on battery. I moved it to my office to debug, requiring that I shut down and move the power cord. Then when I booted up, it started shutting down 10 seconds after reboot to user screen. I did the SMC reset and the PRAM resets, did Safe mode checking. Mac would still not "see" the battery or stay on for more then a few seconds even on AC. I then used the Snow Leopard install DVD and disc utilities, did a complete erase of the hard drive and reinstall of the Snow Leopard DVD. That took around 30 minutes, and the Macbook stayed on the entire time during reinstall. 1st boot after reinstall, stayed on long enogh to "set up" a user, then the shutdown problems appeared again.
Not entirely sure, as the power light on the front has been faulty for over a year, so i can not see if it is "on", but if I plug in a thimb drive, the thumb drive light blinks as if it is getting poweer, I would think thta means the computer is on, maybe the display is just shutting off? I do not have the original install discs, just the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 install DVD and a Lion install thumb drive, how can I do a AHT?

I used carbon copy to clone drve and I'm only using 14 gb of the 40 that's there. I domhave to say these setup screams at certain jobs.

Long story short, I now have a late 2008 15" MBP with a broken display housing, LCD housing, and glass bezel. The LCD itself, along with the iSight etc., is functional. I have the opportunity to buy a display assembly for the mid 2009 MBP, including a new screen, for a good price.
Would replacing the entire display assembly with the mid 2009 assembly work?
Or could I buy the new assembly and simply replace the screen with my current one?
Essentially, what is the compatibility of the two units. I'd prefer the mid 2009 screen for obvious reasons.I searched the forums here, as well as searching many other places, and I have not found the answer.

I have posted this in the Boot Camp thread as well as this one because chances are that more people with a MBA would read this Forum Area. If this is violating the rules of Mac Rumors than please PM me and I will delete the threadI have my MacBook Air which I have installed Windows Vista on and have installed all the drivers from the included DVD. I am reselling it to a friend who wants me to reinstall Windows on it. This is fine but it seems I have stupidly misplaced my Driver Disk so I was wondering if any of you good souls who have a MacBook Air could upload the files. Also is this the right place to put this topic or should it be in the MacBook Air forum?

I am thinking about picking up the 2nd revision but I want to know if it can do a couple of things that Rev A could not. 1) Hulu. For those with a fast connection, either ethernet or wifi it doesn't matter. I don't want the "connection" to be the variable. Test if Hulu works. Open up a show you like, watch a full show in your lap preferably and see if it stutters. It doesn't have to be the HD Option, but regular and full screen. What's the temps like? How is the heat in your lap? Rev A, without coolbook could not last more than 20 minutes before starting to stutter. If it doesn't stutter, can you try the HD Option? First without full screen then with full screen. Any stutter?

early 2009 Intel iMac 24". OS 10.6.8.
Working in Excel today, I was highlighting groups of cells with color when the entire screen suddenly had a pale grey-green tint. Can still see colors beneath, but everything tinted (not just the Excel window, but the entire display). White, of course, is most dramatic. The Dell monitor beside it is fine.
I've recalibrated color a half dozen times (have always had to do that to get the Dell and iMac screens as similar as possible). It's impossible to get white on the Mac. Rebooted several times, including hard boot, zapped the PRam, ran Permissions Repair and Disk Repair from the startup CD. Installed Temperature Monitor to see if there's a heat problem, but I could not find normal temp values anywhere on the Web, so that was something of a bust. Temps attached below in case there's an educated set of eyes out there....
Ran some online tests, too, for color distortion, dead pixels, that kind of thing, but nothing reveled.
I've been all over the Web looking for some guidelines, but most posts at apple and elsewhere seem to focus on later-model iMacs with the yellow lower screen problem when new (It's not that) or panic screens of wild colors, stripes, and the like. This is just a grey-green tint that covers the entire screen, rendering whites grey-green and colors muddy.

I did the latest firmware update few days ago and went through that series of boots. It's a shame on me that I didn't jog down the ROM revision info before the update. According to the this link:
[URL]
The FM Rev should be MBA31.0061.B01 after the update.
My MBA 13 is still read MBA31.0061.B00 after I thought I did the update. Does that mean the update didn't go through?
